Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updated LO Chapter Template for user guides

2022-06-20 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Flywire

The only character style in the chapter template is Code, which is Liberation
Mono 10pt. The Code character style is listed in Character Styles on Page 6 in
the template.

However, in the example of code that has been used there three colour character
styles used - green, blue and red. What are these character styles called in
the programming language? Using the same names in the chapter template for
character styles would be good.

The code explanation paragraph has been placed below the example. That was a
good suggestion.

Adding the “s” at the end of the line in the code example has caused it to
wrap. The explanation paragraph has been changed to reflect this.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updated LO Chapter Template for user guides

2022-06-19 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Flywire

I have changed to the template and the info about the Code paragraph style as
follows. Also, I have used the code example that you sent me.

The following is an example of code. Please note that lines of code are
generally a single line of text that normally do not line wrap. When samples of
code are entered into a LibreOffice document, there maybe some line wrapping
due to the constraints of line width caused by margins.

[libreoffice-documentation] Updated LO Chapter Template for user guides

2022-06-16 Thread Peter Schofield
The first draft of the LO chapter template for user guides can be found in the
Contributor Resources folder on NextCloud.

The filename is LO-Chapter-Template-7-4-first-draft.ott

Please review and comment.

The following paragraph styles have been added to the template to help in
creating a good format for future chapters.

Definition Term 2 - for 2nd level options in a dialog.
Text Body Indent 2 - explanation for 2nd level options in a dialog.
List — this creates a simple list instead of using Text Body Indent and line
breaks.
List 1 Cont and List 2 Cont - allows the use of a 2nd paragraph below an item
in an unordered or ordered list.
Legend Numbered - creates a legend for text in a figure. This will make it
easier to translate the majority of text used in figures.

All paragraph styles, except headings, now have the option “Do not split
paragraph” selected to prevent any paragraphs from breaking across pages. This
does mean a writing style change to prevent long paragraphs.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Figure captions in a single line

2022-06-15 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Martin

I will be writing instructions so that the cursor can be in one line for a
figure.

Also, I shall be creating instructions to use a numbered legend in a figure
when text is involved. Any text added to an image or graphic will then be
placed below the figure in a numbered column format. This will allow for an
easier translation as the text will not be part of the figure.

A couple more days and I will be issuing the first draft of the updated
template.

[libreoffice-documentation] Figure captions in a single line

2022-06-14 Thread Peter Schofield
I am updating the chapter template for the LO user guide chapters and I am
trying to solve a problem on figure captions that was raised by Olivier.

How do you expand the width off a figure frame without changing the existing
width and height of the image?

In other words, I am trying to make the frame surrounding an image wider than
the image itself so that a figure caption is on one line.

I have tried several ways by changing frame properties, but as yet no access.

Does anyone have a solution that would be easy for everybody to use?

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] REMIND: Documentation team call is today at 18:00 UTC

2022-06-09 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Olivier

Evening times for meetings are not good for me, but do have a couple of items
that I would like mentioned.

1. I am willing to continue updating the Impress and Draw guides to 7.4 and
beyond. Not sure yet if it really will be necessary to update to 7.4. Need to
test the beta LO 7.4 against the user guides to see what has changed.

2. The LO chapter template needs to be updated to help reduce the formatting
errors that can occur when preparing user guides for publication. I did send
out an email recently with a few suggestions. Would appreciate some feedback
and ideas. I can easily update the styles and add a few instructions to help
our willing volunteers.

[libreoffice-documentation] Update to LO 7.* chapter template

2022-06-08 Thread Peter Schofield
Suggestions for an update to the LibreOffice user guide template to help
prevent formatting problems when user guides are being prepared for issue.

No change required for heading styles already in use.

All other paragraph styles have the option “Do not split paragraph” selected.
This is found in Options on the Text Flow page of the Paragraph dialog. “Orphan
control” and “Widow control” are deselected.

Selecting “Do not split paragraph” does mean that there has to be a writing
style change because long paragraphs cannot be used. Suggested paragraph length
is no more than six sentences using approximately 25 words in each sentence.
This suggestion comes from Simplified English rules to assist in making a
document easier to read. I have come across some long paragraphs in the LO user
guides and these long paragraphs will create formatting problems.

List paragraphs - length and number of sentences to kept as short as possible,
but explain the list item. Long List paragraphs defeat the object of creating
an unordered list.

Numbering paragraphs - these are normally used in procedures and should only
contain one step in the procedure. Normally, only one sentence should be used.

Figures and illustrations - these should be positioned as close as possible to
the paragraph containing the reference. Preferably at the top or bottom of the
page the paragraph containing the reference, but that is not always possible.

Figures and illustrations - to help prevent large gaps appearing on a page, the
frame size should be adjusted with the "Keep ratio” option selected so that the
figure or illustration is positioned on the correct page. This will prevent any
distortion of the figure or illustration when adjusting width or height of the
frame.

Please let me know what you think of my suggestions and any suggestions you
have to improve the template.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Frame styles question and captioned image resizing.

2022-06-04 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Olivier

If you adjust frame size for a figure, the image inside the frame automatically
adjusts its size to fit the frame. However, you have to select “Keep ratio”
option to maintain the correct image size. I do this adding figures to the user
guide.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Future method for users to report errors in guides?

2022-06-03 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Martin

I agree with you. LO needs a simple method of reporting problems with the
software. Bug reports would put users off reporting problems. Even I would
prefer a simpler method when I find errors in the software when writing the
user guides for Impress and Draw.

I have corrected the formatting on the Draw and Impress guides 7.3. The
corrected copies are in their respective Published and PDF folders on NextCloud.

Could someone replace the copies that are on LO Documentation web page at the

[libreoffice-documentation] Draw Guide

2022-05-31 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Olivier

Just going through the Draw Guide you uploaded to NextCloud and I am finding
errors.

1. Chapter page added after the cover page. This is not required as it is
repeating info found on the cover page. Deleted.
2. Copyright page has been added after each chapter page. This is duplicating
the copyright page after the front cover and is not required. Deleted.
3. Contents page added after each chapter page. This is not required in the
full user guide. Deleted.
4. I have corrected the gaps that appear because figures moving to next page.

New ODT and PDF copies placed in NextCloud

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Impress Guide 7.3

2022-05-27 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Jean

I have checked the Impress guide against my copy and there are formatting
errors galore. Definitely ruins the look of what should be a well presented
book. The Draw Guide is the same.
Is there a difference between the template used to create the chapters and the
template used to the book?
I have created both books using the chapter template.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Impress Guide 7.3

2022-05-27 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Olivier and Jean

Just had a quick look at the Draw Guide and have found the following errors.

1. Extra page between front cover and Copyright page. The title Draw Guide 7.3
has direct formatting on top of Text Body style. Is there a need for this page
when there is a cover page?

2. Paragraph (Book = 1) added after copyright paragraphs.

3. Space added before each chapter title on the chapter title page.

4. What is the difference between the chapter template used to create the
chapters and the template used for this version of the user guide. The
formatting for the book is now incorrect. For example, Figure 5 should be on
Page 20 below Figure 4. This is easy to fix, but the rest of the book has
incorrect formatting. I think it is to do with spacing, but cannot find the
problem at the moment.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] REMIND: Documentation team call is THURSDAY at 18:00 UTC

2022-05-26 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Olivier

Cannot attend because the timing is wrong for me, but would like to raise one
point.

Bug 135501 about changing the default UI is interesting and would like to know
what the other members of the Documentation Team think about changing the
default UI.
To me the Standard UI is good to use.
In my opinion, what is being proposed does is not a good step forward.
Also, there are several spelling errors in dialogs, menus and toolbars that
should be fixed first before there is a change of default UI.

[libreoffice-documentation] Back Cover Text for user guides

2022-05-25 Thread Peter Schofield
After a recent query from Olivier about the text used on the back cover for
Draw, I have created a template based on the LO chapter template. The reason
for this is simple. All the headings on the back cover are black. The headings
in each chapter are LO green.

Also, as a bit of help for all our volunteers,I have created files containing
the back cover text for each user guide. This files and the template have been
uploaded into a folder called Back Cover Text in the Contributor Resources
folder.

[libreoffice-documentation] Back cover for Draw and Impress Guides 7.3

2022-05-24 Thread Peter Schofield
A copy of the file containing the back cover text for the Draw and Impress has
been uploaded to the 7.3 Impress and Draw folders on NextCloud.

Please download if you require a copy. It is in ODT format.

The LO template for user guides was not used for this text and all the
formatting on the text is direct formatting. The LO template was not suitable.
This is why the back cover with text is in PNG format. That way it did not
create any problems when the user guides are prepared for publishing.

and PDF Files folders on NextCloud ready for publishing.

Will now look at the Impress and Draw chapters in the Getting Started Guide to
update to 7.4.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Bug 135501 - Change the default UI

2022-05-22 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Martin

I can only agree with your comments. It is just that I am concerned about what
changes are involved to the user guides.

One thing I would like to know is how do I set my LibreOffice to using the
Notebook Bar. I have switched on experimental features and opened View - User
Interface on the Menu bar, but there is no Notebook Bar offered as an option.
Yet, in LibreOffice > Preferences > LibreOffice > View > Icon Size the Notebook
Bar is there as an option. Some help please.

One thing that I think should be carried out is a spelling correction. Change
all instances of Notebookbar to the correct spelling of Notebook Bar.
Definitely does not look good when there are spelling errors in the user
interface.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Bug 135501 - Change the default UI

2022-05-21 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Martin

I understand your thoughts and do agree that things must move on. However, the
idea of having a Notebookbar UI does worry me a little.

Apple brought out a Touch Bar on some of the Macs, which was a physical option
not software, but software was involved. Apple are now rethinking the Touch
Bar, according to the news pundits, and it may be completely dropped because it
was not all that successful. Using this reasoning, I think that a Notebookbar
UI may also not be that successful.

The Standard UI is great to use.

[libreoffice-documentation] Bug 135501 - Change the default UI

2022-05-21 Thread Peter Schofield
I keep getting messages about "Bug 135501 - Change the default UI” which has
raised a question for me and would like some opinion on this.

Being one of the volunteers writing the user guides, would it mean that I have
to completely update and change the user guides to suit a Notebookbar UI ???

I would like more information on this change to the UI so that I know what is
going to happen. The comments in the bug report do not really help.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Documentation forum

2022-05-10 Thread Peter Schofield
This looks good as it does give the progress of a document on its journey to
publication.

The only comment I can make is about the little indicators used for the people
involved for each item. Suggest an empty circle with the initials of the user
inside. For me that would be PS. The colour fill used does make the initials
difficult to see on my monitor.

I am now creating the 7.3 versions of the Impress and Draw user guides.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Adding Toolbars

2022-04-24 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello

The tools available on the Text toolbar are as follows:

Insert Text Box (F2)
Callouts
Fit Text in Textbox Size
Insert Vertical Text
Vertical Callouts
Fit Vertical Text to Frame

The Text toolbar does exist, but does not appear in the context menu for View >
Toolbars on the Menu bar. This is where you would go to add the toolbar to Draw.

The instructions in the Getting Started Guide and LO Help do not tell you how
to do this.

[libreoffice-documentation] Adding Toolbars

2022-04-24 Thread Peter Schofield
Can someone help please.

I am trying to add an existing toolbar to LO Draw.
The toolbar is Text and contains six tools that would be useful for working
with text. Going to View > Toolbars on the Menu bar, the Text toolbar is not
available.
I have checked the Customise procedure in View > Toolbars > Customise on the
Menu bar, but it is not obvious on how to add an existing toolbar to an LO
module.
I have checked Chapter 14 in the Getting Started Guide. No info on adding an
existing toolbar to an LO module, that is Draw for me.
Adding new commands to a toolbar is not a problem.

A prompt reply would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Reviewing Chapter 7 of Writer Guide 7.3

2022-03-21 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Jean

Just had a quick look at Chapter 7 and do have one immediate suggestion – two
main sections to separate the different printing methods and cover the extra
pages/options available in macOS.

Using Heading 1 style, first section — Windows and Linux printing; second
section — macOS printing.

Some of the printing information will be repeated between the two sections, but
will help in preventing any confusion hn a user tries to print.

macOS printing does have several options available that do not appear in
Windows or Linux.

What do you think? I can do all three operating systems, but will be at least a
week before I can start.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Ping PeterS: Master Docs chapter in Writer Guide?

2022-03-13 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Jean

Sorry, but I had forgotten and family life is now taking more time. Will not be
able give time to updating the Master Docs chapter. I did have a quick look a
couple of weeks ago and it definitely does need some updating.

Also, had a few problems with my computers that took a while to sort out,

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Slide Show in Impress

2022-03-01 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Regina

The right-click on a presentation file and select Show is only available in
Windows. I have checked macOS and Ubuntu and right-click > Show is not
available.

Autostart is required if the option Loop and repeat after… is selected in Slide
Show Settings. This allows a slide show to be run independently as a display,
for example in a shop or at an exhibition as an advertising tool.

I shall submit a bug report to see if Autostart can be added to Impress.

Does anyone else have an opinion on Autostart for an Impress presentation.

Clicking on Show in Windows opens the file in Impress then automatically opens
in presentation mode. However, there is still no Autostart or auto slide

[libreoffice-documentation] Slide Show in Impress

2022-02-28 Thread Peter Schofield
After comments from Kees, I am testing the running of a presentation in LO
Impress and there maybe an omission in the slide show settings.

There is no autostart of a presentation, or automatic advancing of slides in a
presentation. You have to press the spacebar, right our left arrow keys, or
mouse click to start the presentation or move to the next slide.

There is an autostart loop and repeat option after setting a time delay, BUT
again there is no autostart function.

Is this a bug or is it a deliberate omission?

If it is a bug, I will submit a bug report.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LO 7.3 still crashing on macOS Monterey

I tested LO 7.3 on my new M1 MacBook Air running macOS 12.2 Monterey.
Worked on LG7307 file for over 3 hours. LO 7.3 did not crash and I closed LO

My conclusion is that LO 7.3 on an Intel powered Mac running Monterey has a

of the Impress and Draw guides and (macOS mac-shortcut) appears a lot less than
the words “keyboard shortcut”.

• Would this not render the text less readable, comprehensive?
Do not think so. This type of phrasing was very common in user guides that I
have created in the past.

• If the string "Ctrl-C (macOS Cmd+C)" appears 10 times in the same guide - is
that OK?
Yes it is OK. The words “keyboard shortcut” do appear several times in a user
guide. (macOS ) would appear a lot less.

• Does this impact the accessibility of the guides in any way (lots of text in
brackets)?
IMO it does not, especially if answers a user’s question of what to do next.

• Does this make the "Using LibreOffice on macOS" table redundant - except for
the Options command menu path?
This table is still relevant. It does explain and makes LO a little more macOS
user friendly.

• Should the Options command menu path be treated the same way in the guides'
texts (Options-win/linux-path (macOS Options-macos-path)?
The options shortcut modifier will be treated the same as the command modifier,
for example Alt+Shift+F5 (macOS ⎇+Shift+F5) (cannot get the Apple Alt symbol to
appear in my mail program. It is the other way up on the keyboard).

To explain how to use software with procedures does require a lot of
duplication of phrases and procedural steps. That is very common across all
types of user guides.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] MacOS info for all books

2022-01-24 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Jean

I have started to add macOS keyboard shortcuts to user guides. For example “Use
the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+F5 (macOS ⌘+F5)"

Also I have added a couple of lines to the table for “Using LibreOffice on
macOS” and these are as follows:

Right-click Ctrl+click and/or right-click depending on computer
setup Opens a context menu

Ctrl or Control ⌘ and/or Cmd or Command, depending on keyboard
Used with other keys

Alt ⎇ and/or Alt or Option depending on keyboard
Used with other keys

I put the keyboard info in because I do have several Apple keyboards and the
differences are there.

[libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice 7.3 crashing

2022-01-14 Thread Peter Schofield
Thanks Olivier for the Bugzilla link.

Jean/Kevin

Bug report now submitted.

I will now test LO 7.3 using macOS 10.15.7 Catalina on an old MacBook Pro.

Not sure how to download and install a daily build for macOS. Do you have a
link to where the daily build is located?

I have started updating the Impress Guide to 7.3. So far it looks like it will
