Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide 7.3 is published

2022-06-07 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Olivier,

Thank you for publishing this version of the document.

I am interested in reviewing / updating Chapter 3 (Tables) and have put
my initials against it in the tracking spreadsheet. This chapter makes
use of the Media_without_Macros.odb database and, in case it needs some
updates for better figures or any other reason, I have added that item
to the spreadsheet and placed my initials against it.

I'm not sure how long my work on these two items will take and have
reflected that in the spreadsheet too.

Regards,

Steve

Hello Team

The Base Guide 7.3 Revision 0 is now published and available for

https://documentation.libreoffice.org/en/english-documentation/
https://books.libreoffice.org/en/

The book is an update from the Base Guide 7.2, reviewed and enhanced
by Steve Fanning, Robert Großkopf, Vasudev Narayanan and flywire.

The book was created using a master document and chapters were
adjusted to fit the master document specifics. In particular, we
wrapped the copyright section and the Table of Contents of each
chapter is a section that is hidden when build in the master document.
The PDF and the ODT file were exported directly from the master document.

The Base Guide team reviewed and updated the Guide in a continuous
mode (time based) and the Revision 1 (7.3 final) is scheduled for end
of July 2022. After that, the Base Guide team will continue the work
under the title Base Guide 7.4.

The team and the volunteers are now invited to pick the published
chapter and update, following the standard rules of revision
(track-changes, file naming convention, etc...) and upload it in the
folder /Published-Rev1/) for later publication. By end of July, I'll
pick the updates and rebuild the book.

The control sŕeadsheet is now Guide Status BG73-Rev1.ods

Kind regards

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide 7.2 Chapter "List Box"

2022-05-30 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi All,

Thanks for that Robert.

Just to clarify, I think that you are referring to Chapter 4 Forms.
Between Figures 16 and 17 (page 23 in the chapter file), there is a list
item entitled "Events tab". At the end of that item is the text "List
box", which should be a heading on a new line, with the Heading 3 style.

Olivier, this problem still exists in the file in the Published folder.
Would it be possible to correct it before final publication?

Steve

Content is there, but header appers at the end of chapter "Formatted

Hope it will be corrected in Base Guide 7.3

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide - New Chapter 2

2022-05-07 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi flywire,

Thanks for the comments, which I have reviewed and actioned as appropriate.

I have rejected:

•    Some comments that seem to be simply changing the order of words in
sentences that already seem reasonably well structured and clear.

•    Comments that propose adding more detail about the process of
downloading and installing an ODBC driver, and then creating an ODBC
data source name (DSN). I have deliberately assumed that this has little
to do with Base and is, or should be, described in the documentation for
the relevant ODBC driver. If these actions are not described adequately
in a particular example of a driver’s documentation, then it might be
better to propose improvements there rather than trying to rectify the
problem in the Base Guide.

I have updated the date in the file name and returned the chapter to the
NextCloud WIP folder, moving previous versions to the Archived folder.

Having spent a fair amount of time already on this chapter, I will leave
others to process any further comments raised by any reviewers.

Regards,

Steve

The revised chapter is well written and much easier to read with a lot of
good information. It's good to see it links the Getting Started Guide and
includes the SQLite database.

I'm most familiar with SQLite after working through it in detail to create
this section for the current guide so I've focused on it as an example.
Issues are noted in the comments and indicative text is given with tracked
changes. The intention is for discussion.

My overall view is the guide is too confusing for creating a simple SQLite
database. The SQLite process is fairly simple but it is confused by being
guided through a complicated install with links to many other places with
exceptions to follow. I'm very familiar with the process but I couldn't
keep track of the SQLite process using a pdf on a PC. Options should really
be tested with a few typical users, especially the likes of SQLite which is
well down the list.

I suggest a summary after each heading where other parts of the guide are
referred to for the details. This would likely be enough for many users
leaving the references for additional guidance as required. The alternative
would be to start with creating the simplest database and work through to
the more complex.

The connecting with ODBC Initial preparation has two clearly separate parts
which, to make it easier to navigate, need to be split under headings for
Install ODBC Driver and Configure database ODBC connection. ODBC driver
installation is generally well done but configuring database ODBC
connection refers to installation instructions that don't exist and vary by
OS.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide - New Chapter 2

2022-05-03 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi All,

I have placed a proposed new version of Chapter 2 in the WIP folder,
moving all previous versions of the chapter to the Archived folder. I
hope it is an improvement.

The chapter has essentially been re-written and so I recommend that it
be given a thorough review before issue. Because of the level of change
throughout the chapter since the previous draft, changes are not tracked
in the document.

I wasn't sure how to handle the reviews that have already been done on
the previous version of the chapter within the tracking spreadsheet and
so I did nothing. Perhaps Olivier could handle that as he sees fit.

Many thanks to Robert Großkopf for his assistance and advice during my
work on this chapter.

Hello.

I have been reading the /Base guide/, and in chapter 2, I have been
able to see, what, under my point of view, are several errors, all of
them related to the external connection to a Firebird database.

The first of them, although certainly not really an error, but an
outdated one, can be found on page 73 of the PDF file of the Base
Guide 7.2. *Create a database user*. The whole procedure is based on
the use of */gsec/* though, in the Firebird 3 quick start guide says:

“/5.1. User management/

/In Firebird 3, user management is done entirely through SQL commands.
Users of previous versions are probably familiar with the
//*gsec*//utility for this task. //*It is still present, but
deprecated*//…”/

So it would be more correct to use the SQL procedure from isql or
isql-fb to create and authorize users, and also to change the sysdba
password.

According to the Firebird 3 quick install guide, the procedure to
change the administrator password is as follows:

/If the password is masterkey and your server is exposed to the
Internet at all - or even to a local network, unless you trust every
user with the SYSDBA password - you should change it immediately./

/Fire up isql or another Firebird client and connect to a database. In
this example, the "employee" example database is used, because its
alias is always present in a freshly installed Firebird setup:/

connect localhost:employee user sysdba password masterkey;

/If you do this in isql, it should respond with:/

Database: localhost:employee, User: SYSDBA

/Now alter the sysdba password:/

alter user sysdba set password 'Zis4_viZuna83YoYoYo';

And the procedure to create a new user is:

/Assuming you are connected to a database as SYSDBA, you can add a
user account as follows:/

create user billyboy password 'TooLongFor8099Comfort';

On the other hand the Direct connection to Firebird procedure is
completely wrong, it seems that it is a copy-paste of the connection
to PostgreSQL, but that in Firebird it does not work. The procedure
would be:

 *

In the Database wizard select Connect to an existing database and
   then Firebird file.

 *

In step 2, in the text box type the connection string:

 o

If you want to make the connection to an external, serverless
Firebird database file, the string would be of the type
file:///path/to/the/file.fdb, although you can select the file
   directly with the Browse button.

 o

If you want to connect to a Firebird database hosted on a
Firebird server, the connection string should be of the type
   server/portNumber:FirebirdRegisteredDatabaseName or
   server/portNumber:/path/to/the/file.fdb.

The port part (/portNumber) can be omitted if the port is the
   default Firebird port (3306).

FirebirdRegisteredDatabaseName refers to a database registered
   in the Firebird databases.conf file.

 *

   In step 3:

 o

If you are making a connection to an external, serverless
Firebird database file, do not put username and password.

 o

-If the connection is to a Firebird database hosted on a
Firebird server, you must provide the necessary credentials to
connect to the database hosted on the server.

The rest of the steps are the same as for the other connections.

Unfortunately my English is not good enough to modify the guide, so I
hope some of you can do it.

I´m here if you have any question.

Regards

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] 7.3 Base Guide - updates to Chapter 10 and Appendices A & B

2022-01-31 Thread Steve Fanning

Thanks Olivier.

I have accepted all the tracked changes.

With regards to the remarks in yellow comments:

 * Some blank cells in the tables are assumed to imply that the HSQLDB
and Firebird functions are equivalent. It is suggested that we
populate such cells with the word "idem". I agree that the current
blank cells are not ideal. However, I am not convinced that the
situation is improved by simply populating an empty cell with such a
string, without actually making sure that the functions are truly
equivalent. I think that such work is beyond the scope of this
update and should be postponed until we have time to properly check
   the information in this appendix.
 * There are blank cells in the description of some Firebird entries in
the Operators and statements section. These could be populated using
information on referenced web pages.Again I agree but the effort
involved is beyond the scope of the update planned at this
iteration. We would also need to be careful to use the correct
Firebird information - the referenced pages relate to Firebird 4,
whereas LO currently uses Firebird 3.0.7.

Looking ahead I think that this appendix would be better removed from
the BG and transferred to a wiki page which could utilise hyperlinks to
the correct information on the HSQLDB and Firebird websites,
highlighting differences between the two.

Regards,

Steve

2) Filled some blank cells in the tables (a few only actually)

3) Some remarks in yellow comments...

The comparison is extensive, and may require continuous update. The
plan is to phase-out HSQLDB and stick with Firebird, so it is possible
that this appendix will go away in the future. However, LO is late in
Firebird implementation and Firebird is recommended for new databases
only.

I'm also reviewing Help pages on Base and discovering a set of
outdated contents, which will require some effort to update. I plan to
jump between my findings in Help and BG.

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: Base - BG7303 - Linking to Databases - First Review

Hello everybody,

I have processed the comments on Chapter 7 (Linking to Databases) and
returned the updated document to the Work in Progress folder. The new
file is called BG7307-LinkingToDatabases_SF_VN_30Jan2022.odt and it is
ready for 2nd review if anybody is available.

A few matters arising:

1. Dev has noted that several figures in Chapter 7 would benefit from
being anglicized. As mentioned in an earlier email, this is a
recurring theme throughout many chapters and my recommendation is
that we do such updates at a later issue, when we have time to
thoroughly review and update affected chapters.
2. The section entitled "Importing PDF records" refers to a footnote
that mentions a sample database called
"Example_PDFFormular_Import.odb". Does anybody know if a copy of
this exists - it doesn't appear to be in the same ZIP file as the
   other sample databases.
3. The Note after Figure 19 mentions a bug in the Mail Merge Wizard.
Does anybody know if this bug still exists and, if so, what is the
   number of this bug?
4. As far as I am aware, the books do not normally contain hyperlinked
cross-references to other books or to other chapters in the same
book. Is that everybody else's understanding?
5. It has been suggested that in sections of code we could disable
spell checking by selecting the code and clicking Tools > Language >
For Selection > None. Is anybody aware of any issues that might
   arise if we do this?

Regards,

Steve

2022-01-30 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi,

Thanks for the comments. I will check through the tracked changes and
process them in the next few days.

As for the six additional comments listed below, I'd prefer to address
the document-related issues when we get around to properly checking and
updating the affected chapter. Perhaps we need a mechanism to maintain a
list of BG issues that we know about, but haven't time to resolve at
present?

Comments for the record and wider consideration:

1. Can't select multiple fields and apply the same action to all, eg add
fields to query grid
2. Inconsistent icon sets will make interpretation of documentation more
difficult – see
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=144631, consider
naming commands instead of showing buttons
3. Entering queries - would be useful to save queries
4. Figure 23 - Media titles in German language
5. Figure 23 does not calculate $8 reported in the following paragraph
6. Query enhancement using SQL Mode - theory only with no practice
dataset

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base v7.3: Chapter 1 - BG7301

2022-01-26 Thread Steve Fanning

Thanks for the comments.

I have (hopefully) clarified the text for your first suggestion.

I haven't made a change for this second point. The three database
systems currently in the brief list on this page are those for which we
have a direct connection route (as described in Chapter 2). As I
understand it Base does not offer a direct connection to SQLite but
connections are via ODBC - this is covered by the paragraph after the
bullet points mentioned.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] MacOS info for all books

2022-01-26 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Jean,

I have updated Chapter 1 of the Base Guide accordingly.

However, I have a built-in dislike of web addresses like this that
include the version number of the software to be downloaded. What
happens when versions 18, 19, 20, ... come along. Will we have to update
the text of the guides each time?

Can I offer the following alternative text, which seems to side-step
this potential irritation?

 * "For macOS, you need to install Oracle’s Java Development Kit (JDK),
not just the JRE. Download links can be found by selecting the macOS
   option at: https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/.;

I've used this revised text in the Base Guide but can change again if
anybody has other ideas.

[libreoffice-documentation] 7.3 Base Guide - updates to Chapter 10 and Appendices A & B

2022-01-26 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello everybody,

I have placed three updated files in the relevant NextCloud folder:

 * BG7310-DatabaseMaintenance_SF_26Jan2022.odt
 * BG7311-AppendixA-CommonDatabaseTasks_SF_26Jan2022.odt
 * BG7312-AppendixB-CompareHSQLDBAndFirebird_SF_26Jan2022

These three files are now in the 7.3 template, include captions for
figures and tables, and have a little less negativity in the text (e.g.,
less use of the word "unfortunately"; etc).

With regards to Appendix B, I had to implement the modifications with
track changes off - I tried to use track changes but it proved
impossible due to the re-structuring of tables that was needed. The
files for Chapter 10 and Appendix A were updated with track changes on.

None of these three are scheduled for significant updates at this issue.
Please could somebody review the figure / table captions, and any other
tracked changes to make sure I haven’t done anything stupid?

Steve

Thanks for drafting the material.

However, please do not put a file with that name in the WIP folder at
this stage.

Feel free to put your proposed material in a stand-alone file in the WIP
folder, with some different file name that makes it obvious that it is a
draft containing new, unreviewed material (and is not just a routine
part of our update cycle).

Then we can look at the new text, check if it is appropriate for
inclusion and, if so, we can decide if it can be included at this issue.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] 7.3 Base Guide - updates to Chapters 5 and 6

2022-01-19 Thread Steve Fanning

Thank you for those comments.

With regards to the two general points:
1.    “I note most of the figures used are not referenced in the text”.
This is the situation throughout the document and was inherited from the
previous issue. As we review and update chapters more fully (such as the
work we are doing for Chapters 1 and 2 at this update) then I am
ensuring that the figures are referenced in the text. For other
chapters, that update will have to wait until subsequent issues of the
document.
2.    “What is the capitalisation guide for figure text?”.
Sentence-style capitalization is currently the norm in our guides.

I have addressed your other comments on Chapter 5 (Queries) and uploaded
the revised file to NextCloud.

Steve

- The paragraph under Figure 36 end of first sentence... as Figure 36

2022-01-19 Thread Steve Fanning

Thanks for that.

I agree that the specific figure that you mention in Chapter 5 of the
Base Guide is crowded. It should be replaced when we get around to
performing a full review of that chapter in a future issue.

As for modifying the template, your suggestion may be a sensible one.
However, I would not unilaterally apply template changes to the Base
Guide - agreement would be needed from the Team to apply the change
across all books. Maybe you could suggest this as a topic for discussion
at a future Documentation Team meeting?

[libreoffice-documentation] 7.3 Base Guide - Current status of chapters 2, 3 and 4

2022-01-10 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello everybody,

I have placed three updated files in the relevant NextCloud folder:

 * BG7302-CreatingADatabase_SF_10Jan2022.odt
 * BG7303-Tables_SF_10Jan2022.odt
 * BG7304-Forms_SF_10Jan2022.odt

All three files are now in the 7.3 template, include captions for all
significant figures/tables, and have a little less negativity (e.g.,
minimal use of the word "unfortunately"; removal of references to bugs
that have been fixed; etc). I use the word “significant” in the previous
sentence because Chapter 4 contains many small images of single fields
within properties dialogs which I have retained for now as we are not
planning a major overhaul of this chapter for 7.3.

Chapter 2 is scheduled for a fuller review, revision, and tidy up at
this update. Somebody will get around to that soon.

Hi,

After some months without any activity on the (English Language) Base

I am probably considered to be the current editor of the document.

As far as I know, the only other person working on the document is

In the first instance I would suggest you contact Olivier Hallot through

[libreoffice-documentation] 7.3 Base Guide; updated Chapter 1 (Introducing Base) ready for review

2022-01-04 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello everybody,

I have produced an updated version of the above chapter and it is ready
for review (in Nextcloud). Dev has kindly volunteered to perform the
Documentation Team's first review.

The chapter has changed significantly since the previous version (see
below). It would be very much appreciated if one of our Base experts
could skim through the revised chapter just to check that I haven't
introduced any errors into the text descriptions of what Base does. (I'm
not sure a Base expert needs to read through all the user interface
interactions - any problems there should be picked up during the
Documentation Team's normal review cycles).

Reasons why the chapter has changed significantly include (but may not
be limited to):

1. I felt that we should provide a more coherent introduction for
novice users, consistent with the guides for other LO components. In
particular, answering some of the general queries about Base that I
was initially unsure about and providing a brief overview of Base's
   user interface.
2. I didn't like some of the overly negative points about Base; surely
their inclusion as previously worded wasn't a great marketing
strategy. These have been toned down without hiding any specific
   problems that might be encountered.
3. There was a need to anglicize the text and figures and correct some
of the confusions that may have arisen during the translation from
German to English at an earlier issue.
4. Captions were needed for the many figures that previously had none.
(All figures have been replaced with a consistent set captured on my
   Windows PC).

Please also note:
(a) The changes were not automatically tracked by Writer - there were
far too many changes for this to be worthwhile or manageable.
(b) So far I have made no effort to minimize wasted white space by
moving figures around. In my opinion, this would be nugatory effort and
should be carried out later in the publication process.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updating the Base Guide

2021-12-29 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Rob and Robert.

Thanks for passing on your thoughts.

There seem to be two issues here.

1. With regards to the figures throughout the Base Guide, any that I
replace will be captured in a Windows environment. As often happens,
the book will then contain figures from a mixture of environments
but we can't do much about that in the short term.
2. With regards to the (text) instructions, then I will be working
through the book following those instructions on my Windows
computer. Where the instructions don't work on Windows, then I'll
try and work out why there's a difference. If the answer is obvious
then all well and good; if not, then I'll follow up with a mailing
   list question to seek guidance.

Regards,

Steve

users?

Reason here: I am the author of most content of the original Base
Handbuch (Germany). And I'm using OpenSUSE since 20 years. Couldn't
test anything in Windows.

Throughout the Guide Linux is used... (also in the figures). all
manuals have Windows based figures, why not use windows figured here
as well?

Same reason as above. We had discussions here about screenshots and
decided to create all screenshots in Linux with a special theme. We
won't show the behavior of open source software with screenshots of
closed source software. Could also be a special problems with the
right to use this screenshots in a published book.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide - sample databases provided with the book

2021-12-28 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello everybody,

Dev has very kindly volunteered to look at the sample databases that are
publicly availably and used throughout the Base Guide (BG).

While reviewing Chapter 1 of the BG I noticed a few problems with  the
"Media_without_Macros.odb" database as follows. Dev, would you be able
to correct these issues in your “master” version?

1. The name of the Adress table is spelt incorrectly (should be Address).
2. The relationships (at Tools > Relationships) don’t appear to be
complete. For example, the Recall table should have a link to the
Loan table; the Gender, rel_Reader_Schoolclass, and Gender tables
should be linked to the Reader table.
3. On the Loan form, should “current Loan” have an uppercase “C”?
4. On the Loan form, when a reader has overdue media, then the string
“Loan temporary locked!” is appended to the blue string in the
middle of the form. Should this read “Loan temporarily locked!”?
5. The Recall report would probably benefit from some wording changes
to improve its use of English (I can provide more detailed comments
   if needed).
6. The content of the data in the tables should be anglicized where
   appropriate.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Updating the Base Guide

2021-12-28 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello everybody.

During the past few weeks, I have become more familiar with Base and the
Base Guide (BG). In summary, I feel that the content of the BG would
benefit from some care and attention. This will be time consuming and
should be considered as a long-term aim, not a short-term fix.

I think we should adopt a phased approach to improving the document
rather than trying to overhaul it all at once.

I suggest that we try to create an update to be published as soon as
possible after the release of LO 7.3. The following improvements would
be worthwhile and should be achievable in that time frame:

1. Review and update Chapter 1, Introduction to Base, so that is better
aligned with the guides for other LO components and provides more
information aimed at novice users. (A draft update will be available
for review in a few days)
2. Update two of the sample databases that are publicly available
(Media_without_Macros.odb and Example_Sport.odb) so that they are
consistent with the revised text of Chapter 1.
3. Review and update Chapter 2, Creating a Database (task includes
refreshing and anglicizing figures where necessary, and checking
correctness of text). I will work on this as soon as I’ve completed
   the Chapter 1 update.
4. Update all other chapters to add captions to the many figures that
   do not currently have them.
5. Update all other chapters to remove any unnecessary negativity about
   the software product.

Does the above sound reasonable for the first step in a phased update plan?

Regards,

Steve

 * Step 1 - go to the folder LibreOffice Documentation > English >

 * Step 2 - download the file Calc Guide 6.4.zip.
 * Step 3 - unzip the file Calc Guide 6.4.zip.
 * Step 4 - navigate to the Archive folder within the unzipped files.
 * Step 5 - identify the two zip files whose names indicate that they

Hello All,

Thanks for the feedback received about how to progress the Base Guide.

Based on my current understanding of its status, I would like to make
the following two suggestions:

(1) That we issue a 7.2 Base Guide within the next few days. I’m
happy to collate the book based on the existing 6.4 chapters (but
within a 7.2 style template), apart from the Preface. My suggestion
is to update the Preface so that:

    a)    It does not have a statement explaining that the Firebird
implementation within Base is “full of bugs” on its first page, and
    b)    It has a greater level of consistency with the prefaces to
other LibreOffice guides, and
    c)    It includes a statement that there are no significant
changes from 6.4.

In my opinion, the fact that there is no significant software change
since 6.4 justifies this approach and, if there is no dissent, then I
can create this book rapidly.

(2) That we look to implement a relatively significant update to the
Base Guide to coincide with a later build of software. This may
involve restructuring and other changes, as have been identified in
emails on this list during the past few days. I would be happy to
start work on this and coordinate the production of such an update.

The reviewing work that has been done so far (primarily by Felipe and
Dev) will be extremely useful for improving the material in this
book. Many thanks to them for that work. It might be worth pausing
the review of the Base Guide chapters while we gather our thoughts on
what should be done to the document. Ideas can be exchanged through
this email list, or via the Documentation Team meetings.

Please let me know if anybody is unhappy with this outline approach
or would like to suggest something different.

Steve

Hi Team,

During the past few days, I have spent some time looking at the 6.4
Base Guide as we begin to review and update it. Unfortunately, if
we are to improve the quality of the book then the task may involve
significantly more effort and time than we at first anticipated.

This conclusion has been drawn based on my work to date and is a
result of the following main factors:

 * Previous emails have noted that the document would benefit from a
refresh of the figures. What I hadn’t considered was that the “user
data” within many of the figures is based on German examples, which
isn’t ideal for an English language document. I have also found
that
the structure of the example “Media_without_Macros” database
doesn’t

quite match the figures in Chapter 3 (Tables). Hence there is
additional effort needed to re-work some of the underlying sample
databases to review their structure and include English data.
 * When reviewing the early sections of Chapter 3 (Tables), I was
surprised by the level of change necessary to get the detail
correct

for 7.2. We can only assume that this is also the case in other
chapters (maybe Felipe and Dev could comment on whether Chapters 1
   and 2 follow this trend).
 * I was a little shocked when I found out how many bugs are
explicitly

referenced in the text, with links to Bugzilla, and this feels like
it could be a marketing disaster. Just to give an idea of the scope
of this problem, I found specific references to the following bugs
   within the text 46180, 51452, 51453, 51959, 53027, 61871, 73707,
   80320, 82411, 82591, 87290. Also, statements like “Firebird engine
is very good, it is its implementation in base which is full of
bugs” and “The Report Builder is somewhat treacherous in use, as
certain functions are available in theory but don’t work in
   practice” may be true

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Thoughts on the Base Guide

2021-12-03 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello All,

Thanks for the feedback received about how to progress the Base Guide.

Based on my current understanding of its status, I would like to make
the following two suggestions:

(1) That we issue a 7.2 Base Guide within the next few days. I’m happy
to collate the book based on the existing 6.4 chapters (but within a 7.2
style template), apart from the Preface. My suggestion is to update the
Preface so that:

   a)    It does not have a statement explaining that the Firebird
implementation within Base is “full of bugs” on its first page, and
   b)    It has a greater level of consistency with the prefaces to
other LibreOffice guides, and
   c)    It includes a statement that there are no significant changes
from 6.4.

In my opinion, the fact that there is no significant software change
since 6.4 justifies this approach and, if there is no dissent, then I
can create this book rapidly.

(2) That we look to implement a relatively significant update to the
Base Guide to coincide with a later build of software. This may involve
restructuring and other changes, as have been identified in emails on
this list during the past few days. I would be happy to start work on
this and coordinate the production of such an update.

The reviewing work that has been done so far (primarily by Felipe and
Dev) will be extremely useful for improving the material in this book.
Many thanks to them for that work. It might be worth pausing the review
of the Base Guide chapters while we gather our thoughts on what should
be done to the document. Ideas can be exchanged through this email list,
or via the Documentation Team meetings.

Please let me know if anybody is unhappy with this outline approach or
would like to suggest something different.

Regards,

Steve

About your considerations:

i. There were some reference to bugs and a lot of pictures without
caption.

ii. As far as I could tell, the features are pretty much the same for
this chapter, didn't notice some significant change (I'm referring
only to the GUI, can't say much for the code presented).

Are we planning to deliver the Base Guide still in 2021? Asking this

I have also found that

 * When reviewing the early sections of Chapter 3 (Tables), I was
surprised by the level of change necessary to get the detail correct
for 7.2. We can only assume that this is also the case in other
chapters (maybe Felipe and Dev could comment on whether Chapters 1
   and 2 follow this trend).
 * I was a little shocked when I found out how many bugs are explicitly
referenced in the text, with links to Bugzilla, and this feels like
it could be a marketing disaster. Just to give an idea of the scope
of this problem, I found specific references to the following bugs

bugs” and “The Report Builder is somewhat treacherous in use, as
certain functions are available in theory but don’t work in
practice” may be true but don’t create a great impression.
 * Discussion in the mailing list has indicated that we should update
the technical content of the document in a few areas (e.g.,
   comparison of HSQLDB and Firebird; "Auto Grow" feature in reports;
changes to Writer and maybe Calc may affect discussions of the

I don’t think that all the above can be addressed quickly. Therefore, to
make rapid progress (and complete the set of 7.2 guides), should we
issue the 7.2 Base Guide simply as a cosmetic update to the 6.4 version?
The ODT files have already been updated to the LO7 style and the 7.2
book covers are available. With no substantial change then there should
be little reviewing required. However, I have already prepared an
updated Preface and it might be worth including that.

Meanwhile we can continue reviewing/improving the material in
preparation for a future update.

All views would be very welcome.

[libreoffice-documentation] 7.2 Base Guide - Preface

2021-11-25 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Team,

I have updated BG7200 (Preface) and returned it to the Work in Progress
folder for review. Please note however that the section entitled "What’s
new in LibreOffice Base 7.2 Community?" will require further last minute
additions once we understand what is changing in the book's other chapters.

I have checked out Chapter 3 (Tables) for update. I plan to re-generate
figures for all chapters in parallel with reviewing/updating this
specific chapter (hence the generous expected return date).

I have updated the Base Guide tracking spreadsheet.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-23 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello Team,

Many thanks for the offers of help with updating the Base Guide to LO 7.2.

I have created the folder structure in NextCloud, included a tracking
spreadsheet, applied the LO 7 template to all ODT files, and placed
those files in the Work in Progress folder. I have also checked out
BG7200 Preface to update it. Meanwhile Jean is proposing some updates to
Chapter 7 and so others would be better avoiding that chapter for the
moment.

The task could take a long time if one person updates all chapters, and
it would be helpful if others could select chapters for which they can
perform the update. Since the software hasn’t changed much since the 6.4
Base Guide was published, this shouldn’t be more complicated than your
normal review activities (e.g. does the software accurately describe
what Base does; does the text make sense; etc). Please consider doing
some updates!

One systematic problem I have noticed is that the figures need some work
throughout the document. Some appear to have been edited with photo
editing software and many don’t have captions. I will regenerate a
complete set of figures for the document and insert them into the
chapters later – doing it that way will ensure a consistent appearance.
However, please could those updating chapters add captions where they
are missing.

I will review all updates and comments, as I have when updating the Calc
Guide.

Good luck to all!

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-22 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Robert,

Thanks for that and apologies for my daft questions (I'm not always
aware of the history of the project).

I'll give some more thought to improving this area in the (English) Base
Guide, although I probably won't be able to do much during this
iteration. I do, however, believe passionately that we should not be
using the guides to highlight implementation problems, bugs, and
instability!

Translating German materials doesn't sound a great idea for me - it
would be too big a step for my schoolboy German (even with the help of
Google Translate).

Based on what you've read in the German "Base Handbuch", are there any
particular areas that we might be able to improve in the Base Guide by
extracting information from the Firebird 3.0 documentation
(https://firebirdsql.org/en/reference-manuals/)?

Steve

Using the created Firebird database isn't experimental. So there are

We need a description of Firebird for this people, but having a look at
the English Guide there is not much description for Firebird. Only an
Appendix B, which shows the difference betwenn HSQLDB and Firebird.
German "Base Handbuch" contains many more descrition about Firebird, but
another translation form German to English won't be a good idea.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide

2021-11-22 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello everybody,

In my experience so far working within the Documentation Team, we don't
tend to describe experimental features within the guides. Therefore,
given its current status, would I be better off removing discussion of
the internal Firebird engine from the 7.2 Base Guide?

This would avoid references to a "large number of bugs", "instability"
and warnings to "be extremely careful here". These don't read well when
trying to convince users that LO is a quality product.

The material could easily be re-instated later, if and when Firebird is
promoted from experimental to operational.

Any opinions please?

Steve

Don't know the whole content of the Guide but could be the feature "Auto

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Second review of CG7215-User Interface Variants

2021-11-02 Thread Steve Fanning

Thanks Kees.

I accepted your first suggestion to improve wording.

I preferred not to implement the comment on the Print tab (Figure 43). I
agree that this tab is sparsely populated and so its figure could be
compressed. However, the screenshots for all tabs were grabbed from a
screen set to a constant pixel resolution, leaving the figures for all
tabs to be a consistent size, split in two at approximately the same
position. I felt compressing the Print tab might save a little
whitespace but at the cost of consistency. I hope that's okay with you.

I have returned the updated chapter to the Work in Progress folder.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Calc on macOS

2021-11-02 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Team,

Please could somebody who uses LO on macOS check two Calc shortcuts for
me using a _7.2_ build?

The items in question:

1. On Windows, the *Insert > Object > Formula Object* option in the
Menu bar identifies a shortcut for the interaction (that is,
Ctrl+Alt+=). Is there a corresponding shortcut identified on the
macOS variant and, if so, what is it?
2. On Windows, the *Help > Search Commands* option in the Menu bar
identifies a shortcut for the interaction (that is, Shift+Esc). Is
there a corresponding shortcut identified on the macOS variant and,
   if so, what is it?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] First Review of CG7216

2021-11-01 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi All,

With regards to the overall need for a second review of the book, I feel
that most of the chapters probably don’t warrant further review.
However, given that I implemented the changes to all chapters of this
update, then I guess you might expect me to think that!

I would prefer Chapter 15 (User Interface Variants) to be reviewed a
second time if that is possible. This is a new chapter for the Calc
Guide and hence doesn’t have the review history of the other chapters.

Other than that, the review comments that we’ve processed during first
review don’t seem to indicate any underlying problem with any
established chapter. This leads me to think it not worth spending
people’s time reviewing any of them again.

Can I suggest the following way ahead?

1. Please would somebody perform a second review of Chapter 15?
2. Let’s aim to start the publication process on Saturday next week
(2021-11-12). If anybody feels an urge to review any other chapters
further, then feel free to do so before then.

Does this sound okay or does anybody feel strongly that more reviewing
time is needed? If nobody expresses any reasonable objections, then I’ll
go ahead with the above.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] First review of CG7212 / Checking out CG7216

2021-10-30 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Rafael,

Many thanks for the comments on Chapter 12. I agree that using Andrew
Pitonyak’s extension has improved the appearance of the macro code
listings (I assume that we are happy to put up with the various styles
that this extension introduces).

I have updated the chapter, accepting the proposed changes with only a
couple of minor typographical adjustments. The only comment I ignored at
this stage was that relating to re-sizing Figure 12 in order to fit it
on the previous page - I plan to do this type of change at the end of
the reviews, just prior to publication.

I have included today's date in the filename and returned the chapter to
the Work in Progress folder, ready for a second review.

Fwd: [libreoffice-documentation] Calc Guide 7.2 ch. 7

2021-10-26 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Rachel,

Apologies but I forgot to respond to one of your comments on the draft
version of Chapter 7.

The comment in question related to why the description of the reference
intersection operator is perhaps a little more detailed than that of the
reference concatenation operator.

I think this difference is a result of the subjective opinions of
previous authors and reviewers (including me) who considered that the
reference intersection operator could prove a little more difficult to
understand. Hence the inclusion of an illustration and extra examples. I
am not aware of any user-based metrics that would suggest that one of
the operators is likely to be used more often than the other.

I didn’t update either sub-section to address this comment and I hope
that is okay with you.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Calc Guide 7.2 - Chapter 3

2021-10-23 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Felipe,

Many thanks for the comments on Chapter 3.

I have updated the chapter, accepting the proposed changes with only a
couple of minor wording adjustments. I have included today's date in the
filename and returned the chapter to the Work in Progress folder, ready
for a second review.

Matters arising:

1. With regards to the options available in the Select Chart Element
menu, I agree that “Chart Wall” only seems to appear for 3D charts.
However, you can access the Chart Wall dialog by double-clicking on
the appropriate part of a 2D chart. If you feel strongly that there
is an undesirable inconsistency in the software, then perhaps you
   could raise a bug?
2. Regarding the Adapt options on the Position and Size tab of the
dialog with the same name, I could not make them available for a
chart and so have changed that section to state that they are always
unavailable for charts. They can be made available if you insert a
text box and access its Position and Size dialog which may be
interesting background information but isn’t relevant to charts.
3. I agree that the default pivot point on the Rotation tab of the
Position and Size dialog seems to be top left for a 7.2 software build.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Rafael,

That's fine.

At some point Olivier updated the files to better support their

ignored.

1. Included your name in the list of contributors on the second page
   (hope I spelt it correctly!).
2. Fixed the problem you spotted with the footer.
3. Added a response to your comment under Figure 1 but left both the
comment and my response in the file (we can seek a second reviewer's
   opinion before resolving the comment).
4. Deleted the comments that have been resolved.
5. Accepted changes, ready for second review.

I put today’s date on the file but didn’t add my initials again. It is
now in the Work in Progress folder, while the file that you returned is
in the Archive folder.

The chapter should be ready for second review.

Regards,

Steve

Thanks Martin,

I have moved Olivier’s Calc Guide files to the Archive folder and

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Calc 7.2 and autocompletion changes

2021-09-02 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Ilmari,

I agree that when the changes are complete, we should make sure that the
Calc Guide describes the implemented behaviour accurately.

Regards,

Steve

However, the whole thing is kind of up in the air because there is
clearly a need for improvement and fast, as annoyed users are voicing
their disappointment. I would at least hope that the feature would be
addressed in a point release.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Renaming chapter images for better navigation and accessibility

2021-09-01 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Olivier,

Where is the latest version of the script kept?

Regards,

Steve

Hi

While working on chapter formatting and cleanup, I found quite hard to
access images from the Navigator, because the "name" displayed in the
Navigator is random not connected to the image caption or caption
sequence number.

I wrote a small BASIC script that fills the image properties fields
"Name", "Title" and "Description" with the contents of the caption, in
this order:

Name = "Figure nn", where nn is the caption number

Title =  the complete caption e.g. "Figure 12: the paragraph area dialog"

Description = the text of the caption, for example "the paragraph area
dialog".

Note: "Title" is also known as image ALT text.

I have not seen any specific usage of these 3 properties in our
chapters so I don't expect to break anything. Please correct me if I'm
wrong.

The script can be run any time during edition. Previous image naming
is overwritten. Caption sequence numbers are not affected, so the
references in the text are maintained.

A side benefit of the script is to improve the accessibility of the
guides, as explained in this wiki page

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Accessibility/Creating_Accessible_LibreOffice_Files#How_to_add_alternative_descriptions_to_images_in_a_document

Comments welcome.

Hi All,

In the interests of avoiding confusion, the updated files for the 7.2
Calc Guide are NOT currently in NextCloud.

I will advise via the mailing list when they are ready to be reviewed,
by whoever wishes to review them.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Introduction - joining the team

2021-08-30 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Laura,

Welcome!

I'm a member of the Documentation Team who (at the moment) focuses on
Calc aspects.

I've been chatting to Ilmari Lauhakangas and wondered whether you would
be interested in helping with some of our current activities to improve
Calc's documentation? There is plenty to work on but I will try to avoid
scaring you off by covering too much!

One area where you might be able to add great value quickly is in our
Calc Functions wiki
(https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Calc_Functions).
Within the 500+ pages accessible through this section of the TDF wiki
(one page for each of Calc's functions) there are 63 pages covering
financial functions. As a mathematician working in quantitative
analysis, then I expect you will know a lot more than me about what
these functions should do - perhaps you could review their current
descriptions to identify any corrections or improvements that could be
considered?

Another task you could certainly help with is reviewing the LibreOffice
7.2 Calc Guide chapters, when I've completed the updates in a few days time.

Please let me know if these activities interest you.

Regards,

Steve Fanning

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Question about Paste Special dialog in CALC 7.2

2021-08-08 Thread Steve Fanning

All,

First of all, it is true that the help page does not yet describe the
revised layout and functionality of the Paste dialog. We will catch up
soon no doubt.

Similarly the Calc Guide doesn't yet describe the new dialog - I'm
working on that.

The nice thing about the "Run immediately" checkbox is that if unticked,
you can press one of the four shortcut buttons to see which combination
of options on the right hand side of the dialog would apply if that
short cut button was actioned "for real". In previous versions of the
software I often wondered which combination of options was equivalent to
each of the (three) preset buttons.

The default is for the "Run immediately" button to be checked (whenever
you open the dialog), so that a click on a preset button is actioned
immediately and the dialog is closed, which is what the experienced used
would require.

Regards,

Steve

I created the Calc Guide 7.2 chapters in the 7.2 WIP folder.
Files were "cleaned". By Cleand I mean

1) All direct formatting were removed
2) Bullet lists were cleaned
3) Image anchoring and captions adjusted
4) Chapter contents are wrapped in sections in the following schema:

a) SEC_LOGO holds the top chapter image/logo
b) SEC_GUIDE holds the Guide name + version
c) SEC_TITLE holds the chapter title and subtitle
d) SEC_DISPLAYAREA holds from the copyright to end of chapter.

These sections don't affect ODT and PDF output and are important for a
web output, as displayed in

https://books.libreoffice.org/en/CG71/CG7105-UsingGraphics.html

Kind regards
