Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LO white paper

Hi,
I'm afraid that the edits to my migration white paper have gotten a bit
too complicated and I just haven't got the time right now to keep track
or respond to them. So I'll have to leave the document (in both its
homes - odfauthors and ownCloud) in the capable hands of others.

Thanks,
David

David first offered his services back in late September. Since then
he has produced a couple of how-tos and now this white paper.

How come it has taken so long for marketing to acknowledge his effort?

It's not about acknowledging his effort but making sure we respect
our trademark policy [1] and making sure his contributions go to the
right place and within the right context. Conversely, it may not be up
to marketing or to the certification team to reach out to David, but
the opposite.

But David's contributions are acknowledged anyway.

First of all, please take away the logo with the TDF subline. This

Second... Thanks a lot for this whitepaper. May I suggest that you
work with the certification team ? They already started on similar
works and I think we/they would really appreciate your input. You
can join them on the certification mailing list.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards and sorry for cooling a bit the enthusiasm,

Hi Tim,
Thanks for your note. I believe that my source was
http://www.idealware.org/articles/msoffice_vs_openoffice.php
- and specifically this:

Interestingly, OpenOffice can open substantially older versions of
Microsoft Office files than Microsoft Office itself can, or even
some corrupted files that Microsoft Office can't open. For an IT
department, OpenOffice is worth having around just for that.

However, it would certainly be nice to confirm it. Does anyone have
anything else on this?

Unfortunately not. Microsoft has managed to avoid the publication of all
the reports on these subjects, and has plenty of documents about the
opposite statement (i.e. how expensive are open platforms).

I've seen some of those MS-sponsored documents. :)
The head of software development for a very large European IT firm told
me recently that MS owes them a huge amount of money for all the
countless hours of lost productivity caused by Win8's Metro desktop.

I guess I would have to focus on the published site licensing fees.

Analysts do have these data, but will never release them unless you
cover them in gold. Googling about PDF documents on the subject will
find a number of analyst documents, where you can find some hints but no
data.

I'll take a look. Thanks.

Thanks for the details.
I wonder if a how-tos menu link might not fit somewhere towards the
bottom of the Contents menu in
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications (perhaps
before or after FAQ).
The bigger question might be whether it's possible to add a link to a
single hub page linking to some of the orphaned material (like Reference
Cards and Video Tutorials, along with how-tos) in
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/ - perhaps there could
be a link beneath Other books coming soon to a page that, in turn,
links to Other Documentation

needs improvment, we'll suggest changes to the author or simply make
the changes (typos etc) and replace the published version.

David, I'm working my way through your first how-to, mostly using it
as an opportunity to point out how we do things in the user guides,
which you can choose to follow or not.

I've not had a chance to consider what's the best place to list
how-tos on the wiki. Quite a lot of the available material is poorly
organised and difficult for people to find. Suggestions welcome. As
longer-term members of the team know, we keep attempting to improve
the organisation of the wiki; it's definitely an ongoing process.

[libreoffice-documentation] LO Documentation

2013-09-21 Thread dbclinton

Hi,
I've been using open source software (including LibreOffice) for just
about ten years now, and exclusively Linux for about six. Since I am a
writer and editor with some enterprise software documentation experience
(especially using Atlassian Confluence), I figured it's about time I
tried to give a little back.
My primary LO experience is with Draw and Writer - I've used these tools
to create the layouts for dozens of full-length books and event journals
- among hundreds of other projects. Anyone have any ideas for a good
place where I can start?
As an aside, I recently created a Udemy course called Zero Budget
Typesetting based on LibreOffice. If any list members would like, you
can access it free using this link:

Hope I can work with you soon,
