[libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice 7.1 "Writer Guide". suggest add steps for error messages involving "protected view" when opening an .ODT document from an email.

2021-08-17 Thread jon chalk
Hello,
When my recipients were trying to save an .ODT file they received in an email,
they were unable to save the document onto their system/USB/Drive, etc. Instead
they would get an error message "Protected View..." (the message has more
information). I was unable to find any instructions on how to handle this
situation on either the Writer Guide (7.1) or on the forums. However, after a
bit of searching online I finally found the solution.
Please add to the guide the following instructions: "Save the email attachment
to either your hard drive, external drive, or memory card first. Opening the
attachment directly from within the email will cause the error message
"Protected View..." and this will prevent you from saving the attachment to
your computer."
So next time I have a call from another recipient, I can just search the guide
for the words "protected view" and the instructions will remind me what I need
to instruct my recipient on what to do next.
Kind regards,

Jo

[libreoffice-documentation] Hi from Poland

2021-08-17 Thread zibi bizi
Hi all,

I recently decided to try and give back to the open-source community and
decided to help with the LibreOffice project.

My name is Zibi (Zbyszek) and I live in Poland - for now at least. I have
been working as a technical writer for over 6 years (most of it was in
Motorola Solutions). Occasionally I use Linux (Mint, PopOS, Ubuntu,
Raspian), but I am deeply in love with the FOSS ideology, and... here I am
:)

After work, I enjoy climbing, games (tabletop and computer), and nature.

If you have any questions, let me know. I'm sure that I'll have some for
you, sooner or later :)

Best regards,

Zibi

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Direct formatting in the LO 72 template

2021-08-16 Thread Peter Schofield
Hello Milos and Jean

Using the LibreOffice_7.x.V2_Template.ott.
Copy and paste unformatted text from the previous version of a chapter into the
template to create a new chapter file.
Go though the pasted text and add the heading styles to all headings in the
unformatted text.
Go though the chapter again to make the necessary changes to text to match the
LO version I am working on (now 7.2).
Sometimes I have to change a heading to match the changes. Simply done by
highlighting and typing in the change.
Normally there is no visible change in the appearance of the recently typed
text.
Occasionally, the typed text looks slightly different and not correct.
Reapplying the heading style usually fixes it.
Update the table of contents index and this is when you see the problem, mainly
with Heading 3 style.
The text that has been replaced in a Heading 3 style is in italic format in the
table of contents. The text in the style that was not changed is OK.
Solution is to go to the heading the chapter and delete it.
Create a Text Body paragraph.
Retype the heading.
Reapply the heading style.
Update the index for the ToC and the problem is fixed.

I am using LO 7.2 for macOS on a Mac mini that uses macOS Big Sur 11.5.1.

Hope that helps in identifying the problem.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Direct formatting in the LO 72 template

2021-08-15 Thread Jean Weber
Milos,

In my experience, the problem Peter described occurs in some files that
began life years ago and have been edited by various people since then. I
have never seen it in newly created files, except in some cases when old
material is pasted in with retained formatting.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Direct formatting in the LO 72 template

2021-08-15 Thread Milos Sramek
Hi Peter,

odtclean.py is a script used to remove (usually invisible) direct
formatting (i. e. its tags) from text, so that the text can be
translated by translation programs (e. g. OmegaT).
I do not think it can cause this problem, but I have to check to be sure.
But I do not understand how to reproduce the problem - please send a
more detailed description how to reproduce it. Thanks.

When the ToC should odd formatting, I did not know what was causing it. Only

I don't know why this happens, I though originally that it was a mistake

[libreoffice-documentation] "Exporting objects" in Draw guide and Help

2021-08-12 Thread Olivier Hallot

Hi Team

The "Exporting object" topic in the Draw Guide (and in the Help) is
quite shallow on the use cases of exporting Draw objects.

Depending on the file format chosen for export, different dialogs pops
to set the exporting parameters. For example, quality, compression,
encoding, size... All affects the output results.

Sure, the topic is technical, I leave it here for the records.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Question about Paste Special dialog in CALC 7.2

2021-08-08 Thread Steve Fanning

All,

First of all, it is true that the help page does not yet describe the
revised layout and functionality of the Paste dialog. We will catch up
soon no doubt.

Similarly the Calc Guide doesn't yet describe the new dialog - I'm
working on that.

The nice thing about the "Run immediately" checkbox is that if unticked,
you can press one of the four shortcut buttons to see which combination
of options on the right hand side of the dialog would apply if that
short cut button was actioned "for real". In previous versions of the
software I often wondered which combination of options was equivalent to
each of the (three) preset buttons.

The default is for the "Run immediately" button to be checked (whenever
you open the dialog), so that a click on a preset button is actioned
immediately and the dialog is closed, which is what the experienced used
would require.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Question about Paste Special dialog in CALC 7.2

2021-08-08 Thread Martin Srebotnjak
Hi, Jean,

it is really ambiguous. The tooltip says:

Inserts the contents of the clipboard into the current file in a
format that you can specify.

But this is the default tooltip for the Paste Special window (it also shows
upon the Cancel or OK button etc.).

I still cannot see the point in it. If you do not run it immediately, can
you run it in a week? Or after data is updated?

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Writer Guide 7.2

2021-08-02 Thread Olivier Hallot

Hello Team, Jean

I have done the changes and the cleanup of the files of WG72 WIP folder.
The changes were carried with track changes disabled and later enabled
back. The reason is that the changes are "under-the-hood" and did not
affect contents, therefore avoiding a cluttered track-change management.

The file names were preserved.

I had to write some scripts to avoid long and tiring reformatting typing
and clicks, and I did a final visual inspection and fixed some (few)
corner cases of tables, lists and figures issues. If I overlooked any,
please forgive me. Fixing few misplaced objects - if any - should be
trivial. Hard part is to run text+objects operation on 22 chapters with
no mistakes

Kind regards
Olivier

[libreoffice-documentation] Floating sub-toolbars LibreOffice 7.2

2021-08-02 Thread Peter Schofield
I am not sure about this, but can someone please advise.

Before LO 7.2, I could create a floating sub-toolbars follows:
1. Click on small triangle next to the tool icon.
2. Click at top of the sub-toolbar that opens and drag to create a floating
sub-toolbar.

Step 2 is no longer possible in LO 7.2.

What is the solution?

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Changes to list terminology

Hello again

Why the change of list terminology?

To me, bulleted and numbered lists is the most common terminology used in
software.
I think this change is unnecessary, but will check.

[libreoffice-documentation] Changes to list terminology

2021-08-01 Thread Jean Weber
Hello team,

The release notes don't mention this, but anyone updating user guides
needs to be aware: list terminology has changed. In some, but not all,
instances "Numbered" is now "Ordered" and "Bulletted" is now
"Unordered". Some context menus now have "List" instead of "Bullets
and Numbering" and "No list" instead of "Numbering off". Paragraph and
Paragraph Style dialogs have "Outline & List" tab instead of "Outline
& Numbering" and field names on that tab have changed. There are other
examples; these are the ones I remember from Writer. You can't do a
global replace, because in some cases the terms have not changed.

Peter, I have now changed the terms where they occur in your edited
copy of the GS with Impress chapter. They'll be in the Draw chapter as
well.

2021-07-26 Thread Olivier Hallot

Hi Steve

Affirmative.

My recommended change is:

Image(screenshot) anchored AS CHARACTER on a paragraph with style "Figure".
Caption added with style "Caption"
Wrapping frame anchored "AS_CHARACTER" on a paragraph with style "Figure".

I have a Basic script that changes the current settings inside a chapter
to the new. There are corner cases that needs a manual review though.

Files were "cleaned". By Cleand I mean

1) All direct formatting were removed
2) Bullet lists were cleaned
3) Image anchoring and captions adjusted
4) Chapter contents are wrapped in sections in the following schema:

a) SEC_LOGO holds the top chapter image/logo
b) SEC_GUIDE holds the Guide name + version
c) SEC_TITLE holds the chapter title and subtitle
d) SEC_DISPLAYAREA holds from the copyright to end of chapter.

These sections don't affect ODT and PDF output and are important for a

The Release Notes for LOv7.2 include for Writer "Alphabetical indexes,
tables of contents and user-defined indexes will now generate
clickable hyperlinks to document index entry marks" but I cannot
figure out how to make this work for indexes.

Similarly, bibliography improvements include "clickable URLs in the
bibliography table" but it does not work for me.

I have tried on both macOS and Windows 10. I must be missing a setting
somewhere. Please help!

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Calc Guide 7.2

2021-07-21 Thread Steve Fanning

All,

I have completed a review of the 7.2 Release Notes and collated an
initial list of the changes that I believe are required to the Calc Guide.

If anybody is interested, this initial list can be found in NextCloud at
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/wGG24424DknNgtW.

I now need to compare the 7.1 Calc Guide to the 7.2 software, in case
that turns up any other changes to the document.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Mistake help site macro

2021-07-19 Thread Carl Wellhöfer
Hi,

I think there is a mistake in the following help site.

https://help.libreoffice.org/7.1/en-GB/text/swriter/01/05060700.html

In the section "To access this command" is written "Choose Tools -
ImageMap - open context menu Macro". But there is no context menu
available where you can choose macro unless you create a clickable hotspot.
There should be a note which point to this requirement in this case.

Thanks Pierre and Rafael for the help on cleaning the list styles

For the record, the small piece of code is
8<--
Sub CleanListStyles

  sFamily = ThisComponent.StyleFamilies.getByName("ParagraphStyles")
  Dim newStyle as Object
  Set newStyle =
ThisComponent.CreateInstance("com.sun.star.style.ParagraphStyle")'

  newStyle.ParentStyle = "Standard"
  sFamily.insertByName("olivier_dummy", newStyle)
  CleanExtraBullet("List 1", "olivier_dummy")
  CleanExtraBullet("List 2", "olivier_dummy")
  CleanExtraBullet("Heading Caution", "olivier_dummy")
  CleanExtraBullet("Heading Tip", "olivier_dummy")
  CleanExtraBullet("Heading Note", "olivier_dummy")
  sFamily.removeByName("olivier_dummy")
msgbox "Finished"
End sub
8<--

where CleanExtraBullet() is the macro recording that Pierre suggested.

I am cleaning the source files of Getting Started 7.2

This approach is intended to help us to more easily update affected

It will also facilitate the production of a more user-friendly

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Guides Bullet List cleanup

2021-07-14 Thread Olivier Hallot

Thanks Rafael.

The issue is a bit more complex, possibly a bug or enhancement bug. More
details in

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=139693

What happens is that a list is direct-applied over the paragraph style
which already has the same list style as property.

To say in other words, like applying direct bold character Ctrl+B to a
word which char style is already bold.

"Clean direct formatting" does not catch direct list formatting.

With your sample code, iterating on paragraphs, the challenge is to
catch this list direct-formatting.

Hi

I am looking to some clue/Basic code to detect and correct paragraphs
with bullet lists which have an extra, overlaying bullet applied.

In all guides, we use Paragraph styles List 1 and List 2 which are
connected to list styles Bullet * and Bullet - respectively.

However in many lists in the Guides there are often another bullet (* or
-) over the List 1 or 2 paragraph bullet. There no visual indication
when editing the chapters, and no problem in printing or exporting to
PDF. But when changing some para style attribute, the extra bullet pops.

The current trick I use is to select the set of bullet list paragraphs,
apply temporary the BodyText style (then the extra bullet shows), remove
the extra bullet and re-apply the para list style. That must be done in
every list in the text which is rather exhausting.

if no extra bullet pops, then I press Ctrl+Z to undo the temporary

change.

Has anybody a couple of Basic lines to detect and remove the extra
bullet? At least I'd like to know how to catch and delete this extra
bullet.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards

Hi...

The situation is illustrated in the document below

That must be done in
every list in the text which is rather exhausting.

if no extra bullet pops, then I press Ctrl+Z to undo the temporary change.

Has anybody a couple of Basic lines to detect and remove the extra
bullet? At least I'd like to know how to catch and delete this extra
bullet.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards
