Looked there and thought about updating it but also wondered if it might
be auto updated based on the checkout.

I thought the idea of checkout is to be sure no one else would checkout at
the same time. Kind of like a file lock. So by doing the checkout others
wouldn't grab that chapter (wouldn't be able to actually) thinking they
 would do the work.

Anyway thanks for doing the update. It's all a learning process for me.

 Hi :)
It sounds like you might be happier with doing proof-reading rather than
reviewing - at least for Base. For Base that is especially useful. Most
of the other guides have been largely proof-read many times already. There
are always new things added and it's always possible that someone new might
spot an even better way of saying something but the Base Handbook has
hardly ever been proof-read in English.

As far as reviewing the Base Handbook goes it might be trickier for you to
do later chapters but earlier ones might be fantastic if they've not been
 done already.

With Base, unlike other modules/programs/apps in the suite, the later
chapters might depend on you having followed through earlier chapters so
that you have the same sample database set-up. I'm not sure if it's
possible to just jump straight into later chapters.

Also since it's all so new it might be useful to start off by doing one of
the later chapters in the Writer Guide first, just to get used to the
work-flow, how the team works, how ODFAuthors works and generally settle in
a bit before jumping further into new territory.

However, it is your choice and whichever way you go is going to be very
 useful!
 Good luck and regards from
 Tom :)

I don't have oodles of time, i've got quite a few things on the go - also
i've got limited access to internet at home - only on my phone - but access

[libreoffice-documentation] ODFAuthors login

2014-09-20 Thread Tom Davies
Hi Peter G :)
Hopefully someone will register you at ODFAuthors soon.

They hopefully send you the login details such as username and password
privately. You might be able to change the password to make it something
that hasn't been sent over the internet by email (not a hugely high risk
for something like this but it is possible).

Do you have a preference for username? Something fairly short is usually
good. We already have at least 1 Peter, but sometimes seems like we have
many more.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-documentation] Recent request/advert on Users Mailing List

2014-09-20 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Just after Jean put out the email requesting people to proof-read the
Writer Guide i sent a new email to the Users Mailing List pleading for new
people to join the Documentation Team.

I've done the same things many times before but this time seemed to get a
lot more results than usual. I'm not sure why.

I'd tried copying Joel Madero's style which appears to have been a huge
success for the QA Team. I think it helped that we had a very focused task
and that i pointed out this team works by each person taking on just 1
chapter at a time.

With Joel's call to join the QA Team he set-up bug-hunting weekends, or
other very short time-limited periods so that people could join in, try it
out, and then walk away knowing they had achieved something concrete and
good for the project. Err there were a couple other things he was able to
do that i couldn't.

There are other places were we could try this sort of approach. Jean
set-up social-media channels and a blog. There is also the Ask LO bot
thing which i've never got to grips with. I'm not able to post to any of
those and have an aversion to most but if someone else wants to try Joel's
approach on those then we might get even more people joining.

On the other hand maybe i just got lucky with good timing.

Errr, i suddenly felt guilty because of the whole mythical man month
thing (sorry, i know that's sexist) so i have been trying to help the new
people find their feet quickly. I'm not sure if i helped or hindered or
sent people off on wild goose chases or what. I'm hoping i helped!

Good luck all!
Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Fwd: Writer 4.2 Guide Chapter 12 for review

2014-09-20 Thread Sigrid Carrera
Hi Peter,

I just checked if you have already an account on ODFAuthors. You had, but
you were missing some rights, which I fixed now.

If you are currently logged in, please log out and back in. Then you should
also have the option to retract a chapter (which means, that other people
see, that you have it checked out). This does not prevent them from
downloading it themselves, but at least they should realise, that they
might be duplicating some work.

If there are still some open questions, don't hesitate to come back here
and ask. The people working with the site for a long time might be blind
to those little things that make getting started easier for newcomers.

Thanks again for your willingness to help. ;)

If not, then I'll just publish them as is. Quality assurance on
documentation is desirable, but if we hang around indefinitely waiting
for people, it means nothing gets published.

 Chapters are here:
 http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/writer-guide/drafts-v4.2/

We haven't heard from JohnS in over 2 months, so I'll go through the
chapter (number 12) that he had checked out; I've changed the status
on the Tasks page. That will be the last one to complete this book.
(And I do hope John's okay.)

No, I'm not going to spend my time trying to find other people to do
the reviewing work. This list has a lot of people on it. If everyone's
too busy, that's understandable. If you're waiting for a personal
invitation, someone else will have to fill that role.

If you're not sure what reviewing is, read Chapter 2 of the
 Contributors Guide, here:

 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development#Contributors_Guide

Note that you do NOT need to be any kind of technical expert -- what
you do need is to follow the instructions in the chapter and see if
they make sense and if the illustrations match the program and the
text. Big deal, eh? It would be nice if you also correct any errors
you find, but the most important thing is to identify the errors.

You do NOT need an ODFAuthors login to download these files; I've made
them available to all. You do need a login to upload any amended
files, or you can send them directly to me and I'll upload them. If
you don't want to amend files, you can send an email to the list
 itemising what you've found.

Kevin,

AFAIK in KDE Ctrl+Fx brings up Desktop #X - so these keys are intercepted by
the OS and not passed through to the application (i.e. LibreOffice).

(If you learn how to disable temporarily this interception I'd like to know
it as I have been googling it several times but did never find a working

No, I'm not going to spend my time trying to find other people to do

If you're not sure what reviewing is, read Chapter 2 of the
  Contributors Guide, here:

Note that you do NOT need to be any kind of technical expert -- what
you do need is to follow the instructions in the chapter and see if
they make sense and if the illustrations match the program and the
text. Big deal, eh? It would be nice if you also correct any errors
you find, but the most important thing is to identify the errors.

You do NOT need an ODFAuthors login to download these files; I've made
them available to all. You do need a login to upload any amended
files, or you can send them directly to me and I'll upload them. If
you don't want to amend files, you can send an email to the list
  itemising what you've found.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Five chapters of Writer 4.2 Guide awaiting review

2014-09-20 Thread Kevin O'Brien
It was from the repos. I only download from the website on Windows.

I see that Nino Novak is saying that the KDE desktop is intercepting the
calls, which certainly fits what I am seeing. If so, there is nothing to be
done except possibly adding an explanatory note in the documentation, but
that is not my call, and in any case you should probably confirm what I am
seeing.

I'm still trying to figure out the conditional content. I have gone over it
about 20 times and somehow it isn't clicking for me. I can do the steps,
but somehow the part about triggering the choice/condition is just isn't
making nay sense to me.g

 Writer Chapter 14 - Fields

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Document - Forms

2014-09-20 Thread Peter Goggin
When i bring up my version of LibreBase the menus are somewhat different
to those in the documentation. I was unable to find the forms options
described. I downloaded my copy from the ubuntu repository. It says it
is libreoffice-base 1:4.2.6.3-0ubuntu1. There are a whole heap of
optional extras which I did not download initially.

1. Is this the right version of the database software, i.e. the one the
documentation is intended for?

2. Do I need all of the optional extras?

I intend to work my way through the document , page by page to ensure
that whatever it says can be done works as described.
