[Dorset] Thunderbird encoding format
Information and guidance sort on character encoding in Thunderbird and Ubuntu 9.10. (may not just apply on e-mail programs). For some reason I've started getting strange characters appearing in some e-mails, a black diamond with a ? mark in the centre. Now my encoding was set to Unicode UTF-8. Ive now changed it to Western (ISO 8859-1) which appears to fix the problem. :-) But what is the difference between Unicode, ISO 8859-1, ISO 8859-15 etc? Which is the best to use and why? I know someone out there will know but please keep it simple and basic. This is the sort of question 'new users' may have and that is where the LUG is good at - experience. Thanks in advance. [Dorset] Confirmation on up-grading to Ubuntu 10.04
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and can now up-grade via Update Manager to 10.04 but need to confirm:- I have 3 separate partitions for Ubuntu, Linux swap and /Home. When upgrading the system am I correct that I can just upgrade Ubuntu system (sda3), then point to '/Home' (sda5) when requested ensuring that 'format' is not ticked, without destroying the original /home files? At the moment I don't have enough room to make a separate partition or separate external HD to backup the 'old' /Home to, as it's too big. [Dorset] C4L visit and Copy home to another partition
Item 1 ..Thanks to David for arranging the visit to C4L on Wednesday, surprised no one has commented yet; I enjoyed the visit and was impressed with the thought and implementation behind installation of the CC. Bought back memories of previous jobs I had worked on. The Hogs Head was a bit noisy with 'background music' Item 2.. Ralph:- re copy of /home to another backup location, can't find your old email with the commands to use. I want to copy the contents of /Home directory (which includes /Clive /Lily home directories) from sda4/media/home to sda6/media/Backup/home as a backup keeping correct permissions. Do not need to 'tar' files as /Backup is empty partition (partition name is Backup). Whichever command you gave worked with it's extensions ( think it had 3 cjr? also think it had 'recursive' included was that the r). Similar command to copy back? if upgrade messes up. [Dorset] Advice on projectors and Linux
Hi all Just looking into possible purchase of a projector for use on my Linux machines. Requirements are:- Simple to operate Able to work in a medium sized hall with limited blackout facilities and at home Inputs from VGA, sRGB, Video. HDMI, USB (would be nice) Brightness 2000+ Contrast 1800+ 1080p compatible? Price £400-£500? No problems driving from Ubuntu 10.04 USB would be useful as it could mean leaving the laptop at home and using a USB stick. Anyone used an Epsom EB-X8? It's been difficult locating good retailers locally who could supply both info AND sales. Any advice would be appreciated. [Dorset] Restrictions on number of partitions
I was asked a question by my friend who is trying to install Linux on his new PC fitted with a 2 disk Raid array (SATA disks). Is there a restriction on the number of partitions you can have within an 'extended' partition? He is getting an error report when trying to make the '/Home' partition, along the lines of 'cannot make 17th partition'. Installation has produced the '/' and swap partitions but fails on /Home. (Linux is on the second disk) Any ideas please. I've suggested he joins DLUG and come to the next meeting! -- Clive Wills -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday 2011-02-01 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
[Dorset] Projector screen
Hi all Back from CH and Victor was after a projector screen, unfortunately I could not respond at the time as we have one. Today a friend has asked if I know if anyone would like a portable screen which is approx: 3-4ft wide. Victor. Would your wife be interested in it (Wimborne area), if so contact me 'off line'. Anyone else interested? There is also a large (6-8ft?) self supporting screen, condition unknown if still working. -- Clive Wills -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday 2011-06-07 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
[Dorset] On-screen keyboard at Login
Hi all Have a problem on a friends old Laptop at the login screen:- top left shows a graphical keyboard, centre the normal user selection logins BUT key presses have to be for 1 sec each character (which is a pain). Tried to delete the graphical k'board but it disabled the keyboard! Tried looking in the system menu but nothing unusual. Then thought it is only at Login the fault is there. Once logged in all is normal. Must be to do with Grub?? We think they may have pressed some key combination that have caused this, tried all sorts of key presses but nothing. Not seen this before so any ideas please. [Dorset] New Year Project
Hi all Hope you all had a very good Christmas and not too 'stuffed', wish you a very happy and hopefully prosperous New Year. I've decided that one of the projects for next year is to re-arrange/re-do my small home network, as I've been having little niggles with how it's set up at present; but I do not know enough details of networking and making it 'safe'; so here's a request. Is there anyone on list who is near enough to Wimborne who would be willing to come and teach me more about networks while setting up my system please? Ideally it would be either 1 or 2 afternoons or evenings (I'm retired so available!) for a couple of hours; there is also the possibility of my next door neighbor also sitting in to learn! So it could be a small 'workshop' type of situation! I think most of the problems are in the setting up of the router and inter-connections. Anyone interested please reply off list with possible suggestions or dates so I can arrange times ect. The network contains: 1 desktop PC (Ubuntu 10.10) 2 laptops - Ubuntu 11.10 and old Windows XP( which will be replaced with Linux) Wireless Router ('G' at moment but hope to change to 'N' later) 2 Printers, a HP Laserjet 5P (always on) and a HP Colour all in one print, scan copy (on when required) The 5P is through a 3 port Edimax print server (2 USB's available) as it has a parallel connection; the other is ethernet connected to the router. At a later date I may like to connect to a new 'smart' TV. Wireless connection is WEP2 and not broadcast, has MAC address filtering enabled but does not have fixed IP's. One problem is that the 2 printers often have the same IP address and confusion exists when both are switched on! Talktalk will not give a fixed IP address to the router which is switched off to reset connection every 2 months at midnight. Any other info required please ask. Any takers? -- *Clive Wills* /Powered by Linux Open Source Software/ -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, second Tuesday 2012-01-10 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
[Dorset] Help require for Tuesdays Mtg please
Hi All I'll be at the meeting on Tuesday night and will have some questions on networking (again!). I've just replaced my old router with a Netgear DGND 3700, all working fine except for the print server (with HP LJ6P attached). Was all working before but can not 'see' the server on the router. Tried to find with the old IP but gateway etc has changed. Put IP address into Firefox but not found. Reset print server to factory defaults but srill not seen. Question: is there a command to find what is connected to the ports on the back of the router? Tried also with Print server connect to another laptops eth0 (no network connected) but still no joy (leads changed also). Will bring print server to meeting if not cured by then. -- *Clive Wills* /Powered by Linux Open Source Software/// -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday 2012-07-03 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
[Dorset] Supply of a Church Video System
Hi All Is there anyone who could supply and support (initially) a Church Video System and would like to offer help to sort out a suitable system? At the moment we have an ageing PC based system which relays the live Service to 5 or 6 analogue TV's and a projector, shows the words to songs hymns onto the screens, records the Service to HD DVD, is able to play DVD content and links into the Audio system. The 2 cameras are in fixed positions but fully adjustable for side to side, up/down and zoom. There may be other requirements but that's the main ones. The person in charge has obtained several quotes from 'national' firms which estimate cost equivalent to replacing the whole Church heating system including the boiler! The costs may be reduced if open software was/is available but I have no knowledge of what is possible? Anyone able to help? If so reply off line to me in first instance please. -- *Clive Wills* /Powered by Linux Open Source Software/// -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2012-12-04 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
[Dorset] Replacement for Gimp
Another request for info please. My son needs to square crop 9 photo's before getting them printed 'as one' onto canvas, the completed group of 3x3 photo's will then be saved as one JPG for Jessops to print. He does not have any reasonable editing software so I suggested 'Gimp for M$ W**', but this version of Gimp has been stopped by the project as they do not have any suitable programmers to rectify the back-log of faults!! He'd prefer not to use a Web based programme as he needs to work 'out of site' of his wife. Can anyone suggest a suitable free M$ photo editing programme please, (I'm well out of touch with M$ now). If all else fails he'll have to come here and use my Linux laptop with Gimp but it will not be easy without his wife finding out (Christmas present!!). Any suggestions please? -- *Clive Wills* /Powered by Linux Open Source Software/// -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2012-12-04 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
[Dorset] Nexus 7 virus software, any problems?
Hi All First, can I wish you all a very Happy New Year. Today we were in PC World looking at the Nexus 7, as my son-in-law is thinking to get one; however the assistant stressed that it was very important to get a good anti-virus software installed (Norton) as so many tablets had been returned/damaged by virus attacks, and it is not covered by warranty. A very long discussion then took place about how vulnerable Android was to attack, because it was 'open source' and the Apps were not controlled, unlike Apple Apps. Well; I gave up trying to say that it was not possible to get a virus unless you accepted the request to run the programme. They were obviously 'White Washed' against open software. Now I know some of you have the Nexus 7 and would like to know if there are any problems with virus' and if a virus programme is required. Also how pleased/good is it; reviews have all been good. (£199 in PC World and £189 in Argos) I don't think virus' are a problem but would like confirmation please, to pass on to my son-in-law (he's a Mac and Apple Iphone/Ipad advocate). Also any grips against it. -- *Clive Wills* /Powered by Linux Open Source Software/// -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2013-01-08 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
[Dorset] External HD - Permission denied
Hi all Today I bought a small external HD from Novatec in Portsmouth, to back-up my laptop before re-formatting and re-installing the laptop. Plugged it in and it was not recognised by the system, so checked with Gparted which confirmed it was not formatted. Formatted drive to EXT4 and gave it a label 'CAW1'. For the above I used a MINT 14 'live disk' with Gparted and checked the HD was not mounted. Now recognised when plugged in, but it will not accept copying a file onto it, reports that 'Copying file error - Permission denied'. Checked on main PC, same result. Right click on disk and checked permissions tab; reports are 'permissions not available' or word to that effect. How do I make the disk available to any person or machine please? At the moment it's a useless block! Not had this before when formatting a HD. Is it 'ROOT' that's the problem? -- *Clive Wills* /Powered by Linux Open Source Software/// -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2013-04-02 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
[Dorset] Partition folder capacity
Hi All See you tonight at the Broadway all being well. Since arriving back from Switzerland I've been trying to copy all the photo's onto my hard drive which is connected to the router, acts as a network store and backup. Up till now all has gone well but I've not been able to copy the files/folders across for this last visit. The 350Gb disk has 3 partitions, 2 as Ext4 1 Fat32, the largest is the one in use (Ext4). There are 123 main folders in this partition which take up approx: 63.5Gb of the 166Gb available. I have been trying to copy over 1 folder with all sub-folders and files; all appears to go well but after it is finished the folder shows no sub-folders or files! Empty. tried this 4 times in various ways. Is there a maximum number of folders you can have in a partition? Is this the problem? -- *Clive Wills* /Powered by Linux Open Source Software/// -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2013-05-07 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
