FWIW, few would consider reinstalling the OS a solution to this problem, it
seems you had an unrelated reason for doing so. Also, what you've described
isn't really the problem we're experiencing.

Evoking Win-S is causing keyboard problems requiring a reboot in most cases.
It's not just one or two errant 'keystrokes', but a flash of 10 to 30
OS-evoked key commands causing window closures, taskbar property changes and
other desktop casualties (most may not think to check their trash folders
afterwards).

Hopefully these Win98-specific problems can be fixed. IANAP, but it seems
the gran mal starts in the keyboard hook. The OS must be getting these key
commands from somewhere, and I'm curious to know where the data is coming
from for these 'keystrokes'.

FWIW - I was never been able to get the win-s thing to work.. I never
really bothered me because I never use it..and I thought I must be
mis-understanding what was supposed to happen.. One day I tried to get it
working and couldn't... Oddly it works now since my machine cratered and I
had to install the OS from scratch...

Somewhere along the way - in the OS updates etc. the function was broken...
My machine is setup the same way now that it was before the crash.. I am
running the same apps etc..

I am using W98 IE5.5 and have long suffered from the same problem.
Neither Win-S nor any alternatives will enable focus on the DQSD
toolbar.

This subject has been discussed many times over many incarnations of
the toolbar but, in my case, without resolve. I have now learnt to
live without this very useful feature, unfortunately.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Crazy windows

2002-09-23 Thread Marshall Finkman

Yes, I've had the same problems (Win98 IE6) when I use Win-S, or any other
Win-x substitute. I initially thought it was because I had DQSD docked on a
secondary taskbar but moving it to the primary taskbar only solved the drag
and drop problem. I have since disabled Win-S (instructions in the dqsd-user
archives). A bug report was made, I think you can check to see if it's been
closed, I remember there were several Win-S related emails in this list but
that was a few months ago. Early on I submitted a screenshot of an error
dialog (something similar to the 'disabled hook' error many experienced) but
I don't think that one was addressed specifically. Eventually I was no
longer able to recreate it (it only occured during startup) and since have
deleted the image.

I know it's a very frustrating problem, Win-S would be a very convenient
feature and one I would use often but unfortunately this mystery seems to
have no leads.

Subject: [DQSD-Users] Crazy windows

I have DQSD on top. If it's obscured by a browser window and I Win-S to
get there, the obscuring window starts acting crazy, e.g., changing
size, maximizing and restoring, etc...

Has anyone noticed this behavior?
