[drakelist] TR4C Question
richard radke [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Morning gang, Picked-up a minty TR4C (at a sweet price from the eham classifieds) a couple of months ago...Just now, starting to have the time to check it out...Been using a C line for years, but don't have too much experience with the xcvrs The rcvr section works great...Good sensitivity on all bands...But no output..Zero...Replaced the driver and de-oxited things...Can hear good quality audio and cw on a nearby rcvr...Haven't switched out the finals yet...I figured even with soft tubes, I'd have some output...Using a good AC4, bias set right, checked the fuse lamp, and the slide switch on the left rear...Any thoughts from someone with more time with the TR4's than I, before I roll-up my sleeves and get to work? [drakelist] Electronic air cleaners damage rubber
FYI. There have been reports that the so-called electronic air cleaners that emit negative ions damage rubber products in short order. For example a pinch roller on a 6 mo old VCR that aged 20 years or a one-month-old drive belt that was crumbling. Other reports are of rapidly failing rubber seals windows and disintegrating carpet pads. What was in common with all these reports were various models of negative-ion air cleaners that had been recently installed. It seems that the ions penetrate every crevice and will attack rubber. Ron Wagner [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Okay, let me see if I can show my ignorance. Negative Ions and Ozone are the same thing? O know that O3 is a very reactive oxygen molecule, and will more or less bleach anything it comes in contact with. My understanding is that Ozone in any amount is not generally good. OTOH hand I am not exactly sure what a negative ion is. The above warnings were given with the Ozone unit which I purchased. FYI. Joe Roth [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Happy New Year all Drake gurus! I seek your vast insight on the L4B. I am rebuilding my L4B's power supply. I have heard of some replacing the stock transformer with a Peter Dahl type which gives higher plate voltage. The goal is to bring the amp's RF output to 1500w. Has anyone done this mod/upgrade? Is it worth the bother? Opinions, please. BTW- My present transformer is fine, I believe. Ozone is not so good for the lungs, either. Good idea to stay out of the room/house while using one to remove odors. RE: [drakelist] L4B PS xformer
WF2U [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Let's see: L-4B original rated input is 2000W. at 50% typical efficiency, the output is 1000W. So, at 1500W output you're going to gain 10xlog 1500/1000=1.7 dB. Considering 1 S-point equals 6 dB, you're going to gain less than 1/3 of one S-point on the receiving end. You figure it out whether it's worth the expense and the reduced life of the pair of 3-500Z's... 73, Meir WF2U Landrum, SC Drake 2-B/2-BQ, TR-3/RV-3, TR-4, R-4B/T-4X, L-4B. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Joe Roth Sent: Monday, January 02, 2006 7:30 PM To: drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Subject: [drakelist] L4B PS xformer Joe Roth [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Happy New Year all Drake gurus! Denny AE6C Hmmm... dunno about that one. I have a couple Trion console units and one of the Sharper Image models too - had 'em for nearly 10 years and I never had any trouble with anything, rubber or otherwise. The conductivity of the air (high humidity) helps produce more ozone so perhaps a humid southern climate is the cause and effect. The Trion units will far exceed the capability of the sharper image stuff but no ill effects here. Laser printers that get used a lot produce tremendous amounts of ozone but how many secretaries complain about their rubber bands falling apart? hi I have the little wall plugin ozonator that came with the sharper image unit in the shack - none of the rubber bands on stuff in the shack is rotting and i've had it for 4 years. 73 Jason N1SU -- Jason Buchanan - Boxboro, MA Website: http://n1su.com/ -- Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --
RE: [drakelist] L4B PS xformer
Rodger Singley [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hi Joe and list, I would stay with the original transformer. A properly operating L-4B with good tubes will produce around 1200-1300 watts peak output on SSB with the stock transformer so any gain on sideband is insignificant. The only place I could see a gain from a replacement Dahl transformer (and it would not need to be a higher voltage one) would be increased current capacity so you could also run 1200-1300 out on CW without concern of heating in the stock transformer. However, at most you are going to gain (on CW) about 2-3 db which is probably not worth it and you will find the next weak link in the chain while doing this. To put this into perspective, instead of buying the Dahl transformer you would get more bang for your buck by putting the money into a better antenna and/or lower loss feedline and/or tuner. I built a homebrew amp using 3 4CX800 tubes and a quite expensive Peter Dahl transformer for a VERY conservative 1500 watts out on all modes including AM. It was a fun project to build using high quality components I couldn't afford as a younger ham but I doubt if you could tell by listening on SSB whether I was using this amp or my SB-220 which I built in 1976. 73, Rodger WQ9E -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:owner- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Joe Roth Sent: Monday, January 02, 2006 6:30 PM To: drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Subject: [drakelist] L4B PS xformer Joe Roth [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Happy New Year all Drake gurus!
