Hi Boyd -

OK. I can see where your situation could cause a problem. I took Carl
at his word that the filaments were lit, but if he missed one of the PA
tubes it could work out that way. I'll let him know, we are working off
reflector to resolve his problem. A voltage check would show if
something flaky like that was going on.

I have published service supplement CDs for the Drake 4 Line separates
and the 2-B, and have been working on one for the TR-4 series for the
last year. Each CD includes ALL the variations of the schematics. So
far I have eleven different schematics for the TR-4 series, Bill Frost
at Drake only has two! There were several in the area of your serial
number, and I'm away from home this week, so I don't have them all with me.

Obvious question on your PTO problem, do you have approx 11V on the DC
line of the PTO? There is a 10V Zener inside the PTO that can short,
taking out the 100 ohm decoupling resistor. If you do, can you hear the
PTO running, or see it on a scope if you have access to one. Should be
about 1.25-2V p-p output. IF the PTO is dead, the transistor, or FET,
can be replaced without affecting the linearity. I'll be back home next
week and can get you the correct schematic for your s/n.

I hope the CD will be ready later this month, but it keeps stretching
out as I find more variations, necessitating more photos!

Good point, John. My request was just in passing, but
out of curiosity I plugged in drake 4-line blue filter to
Google and got numerous references to blue lamps, many links to
WA9TGT's filters, WB4HFN's page linking to TGT's, but none that I could
find which linked to the Lee Filters number. I didn't try searching
the drakelist archive because I couldn't find the

That might have worked for you last night, but today if you
go into either the PayPal or the non-PayPal checkout, it stops at one
point (just before confirming in PayPal) and give the error message that
the minimum order amont of $15 has not been reached, and you cannot
progress from there. I got a similar message from the other
checkout option this morning when I tried it. I'll just order two
sheets and sell the 2nd one . . .

Hi Duane and all,

I plugged in an order with FT last night just to see how far it would
go. I got right up to the shipping but didn't give them my card number
and there was no mention of a minimum orderunless I somehow missed
it. Even then, I would gladly pay $15.00 for a sheet of filter if I
needed it. I am sure there are other goodies on that site that one
could order to make up the $15.00 minimum that would be usable items
around the shack. For that matter, one could order several sheets of
filter, keep one and sell the excess.

I happened to load up on the original stuff when it was still
available so I have my own lifetime supply.

John you are absolutely correct and it's not just here but on all the
groups that I belong to. Just taking the time to search the web and
the groups archives will provide a wealth of information. The other
thing I see is someone will ask a question and it has been answered.
Now it seems like everyone else wants to get some attention so the
question now gets another 10 or 20 more answers to the same
question. Sometimes a little more information MAY be needed, this I
understand. I also know that sometimes you have submitted an answer
along with a few others at the same time so there will be some
repeated answers. But to drag a simple Q A on for days is going a
little overboard. It just ends up taking up a lot of computer space
and fills up my mail box unnecessarily.

That has been my experience also. The white background tends to
yellow with age, imparting a greenish cast to the blue-green of the
original filter color.

I did find a frosted mylar sheet that diffused the light almost as
well as the white, but still had a hot spot in the middle.

Using the 755 bulb instead of the original 47 helps considerably in
extending the life of both filter pieces, plus gives the added benefit
of almost forever bulb life.

  Carey,
You did NOT do wrong in your asking. If this forum is not for encouraging
new folks in their Drake endeavors, then it serves no purpose. I, for one,
gladly share what little I know, and DON'T keep score how many times a question
has been asked. There are many of us who will help, and not chastise you for
asking. Carry on!! If there gets to be too much email on a somewhat dead list
sometimes, I am sure Thom is fully capable of telling us to slow it down, we
don't need any reflector police doing so.

[drakelist] TR4 S meter

2007-11-07 Thread Ken Bessler

My TR4's S meter is reading off the left edge of the scale (S minus 1). When
I inject a 50 microvolt signal on 7040, I get S9 exactly. Anyone know what
the problem is? I should be seeing S1 at least on 40 at night. Yep, I said S1
- I live in a shallow valley so my HF background noise has always been low
but negative S1?

Help?

well i am the one who started this thread. and sorry for that i am.
and i did not ask where to get the materials. i asked for the call or
the web address of the man who sells the filters that more resemble
the originals. now i am two months new to drakes and drake
collecting. i joined this list in search of knowledge and technical
assistance. there are collectors here that have gone thru all of the
googling searching trying and still rely on experience in the end. i
simply asked them to share. apparently was wrong about the use of
this list. i did not know what kind of material it was, what its name
is, that it was sold my FILM LIGHTING COMPANIES. who would have

have several sources for material to make my own if i so decide. so 73's

Not a flame, but rather an observation.

I agree to a point. At least look on the web before you ask here,
but... the thing about Google and web information in general is
that you can find all kinds of bad information on the net. And
unless you follow this list and know the players you never know
if what you read on a site is from someone who has a clue or not.

As for the archive link on zerobeat, it works for me. Maybe it was
the site was down when you looked.

Hi Carey!

Don't worry about it ... it's just the Internet, and some people gripe about
everythingcertainly no harm done. There's a wealth of good info and good
people on this list, who are glad to help.

Re: [drakelist] 4 line blue filters

2007-11-07 Thread W4AWM
Hi Carey,

Please don't feel bad, you asked a perfectly reasonable question and found
the answer. There was really no way to enter a question like that into a search
engine until you at least had a manufacturers name or model number. That you
got and that is why we are all here, to help eachother. If you did not happen
to know about the Drake site, you could not be expected to be able to find out
anything, either. The last time I tried to find the Drake site on Google, the
link did not work, so you can see there are problems. In any rate, welcome to
the reflector and to the world of Drake collecting.

My little tirade was about the folks who know what they want and in many
cases have the above information. Then they get onto the reflectors looking for
someone to look it up for them, or maybe even send them the tube, connector or
other part from their junk box at no cost. Rarely do you see someone offer up
front to pay for the item. Maybe they would offer to pay after someone offers
them the item, but it is not that evident at the outset. I used to send out
connectors, hardware and other stuff just to help out. Now with increased
postage rates and limited time to find suitable packing, box it up and take it
to
the post office or shipping company, I can no longer do that gratis. Good guy
or
not, it is just not worth the hassle unless a fair price is paid and the
postage covered.

I do have an extensive library of manuals, catalogs and reference books and I
am glad to look up things for folks. A goodly number of manuals are now
available free or at reasonable cost for a quality reprint. Therefore, I will
no
longer take the time to go to Kinkos or other copy place to reproduce a manual
for free. The only time I would even offer is if it happened to be a rare
manual what I was sure was not available anywhere else. Also, there is the
copyright law bit and I have been challenged about that several times by
overzealous
clerks at the copy stores. Although most of these materials are very old and
the companies are in many cases defunct, nobody knows if someone out there
still
holds a copyright. For instance, in the case of Hallicrafters, the name is
owned by an electronics company and Drake is still in business although neither
is in the ham gear market at this point.

John, W4AWM

The S-Meter is part of a bridge network that compares the plate current
of the AF output stage against the IF plate current of two other stages,
and as the tubes age the balance shifts slightly. There is an S-Meter
Zero control on the right side of the TR-4 to allow you to rebalance the
bridge and cause the meter to read S-1 with no input signal. R187, a
blue trimpot near the center of the underchassis to set the S-Meter to
60 over S9 with the RF Gain control turned full CCW. The procedure is
outlined in the manual, but that's about it.

If it's reading S9 at 50 uV input, it's about right, and really doesn't
need to be adjusted. On the other hand, if that -S1 bothers you, that's
how you fix it!
