Re: [Drakelist] 6AH6 tube availability

2012-05-03 Thread Terrell Hamilton
Gene, et. al

Is it beyond the realm of possibility that some small tube company might be
convinced to do a limited (Sylvania quality) run of 6JB6's and 6AH6's? If a
hundred hams signed up to buy several sets each, would that be enough, I
wonder?

Anyone know an exec/owner of a tube company?

Hmmm Maybe we could convince Rob Sherwood to do a series of tests in the
spirit of keeping the old one alive. I do know that he is a big fan of the
R4C. Maybe he is a fan of the B-lins as well..

[Drakelist] R4B S-Meter crack

Hi, all - I just noticed my s-meter in the R4B is cracked. (How do those
things happen?) Does anyone know if they're replaceable, or are they part
of the meter? I hate to take it apart just to find out I can't fix it.

once, too. Some dust is terribly dangerous - I don't know how solder fits
in there, but it wouldn't hurt to use, at least, a paper mask. After
hearing about this guy, I now use a respirator for most anything that floats

You can fight the solder with heat OR
take the easy way and grind the solder
joint with a Dremmel and cut off disk or
a diamond tipped grinding bit that
Dremmel also supplies. I know Iknow,
some one will bring up dust and the
Mayan Calendar and possible
meteor...never really an issue
AND the old cap pulls out with the
gentlest of pulls AND there is no old
solder, so the new one fits in easily
AND you have a clean piece of metal to
solder the new one. Or, you can risk
melting wiresI have replaced
caps in 4 rigs and one was with the
soldering iron, solder suckers, solder
wick, wire cutters and the other three
were with the Dremmel. BTW, no melted
wires with any of the 4 rigs.

Garey:

In 1960, I was a NOVICE (WN6BTS) and there was, indeed, a prohibition
against using VFO's. All novice license holders had to use only crystal
controlled Xmitters. I made mine out of old TV parts and a 6146, grinding
down some old crystals with sandpaper that older hams had given me.

Lee -

A T-4 was an early 4 Series transmitter that had no PTO or BAND
Oscillator. It was only able to transmit in TRANSCEIVE under RCVR
control with an R-4(any), or under crystal control. There is a photo
of one on the front cover of the T-4X manual, and the schematic is in
the back of the manual. It's essentially a schematic of the T-4X with a
couple of large white spaces! :-) It was sold for a while with a
stacking cabinet to make a 'transceiver' with more receiver features
than a TR-4.

They were originally sold with the 'feature' that they could be
'upgraded' at the factory by adding a PTO and BAND Oscillator with a new
front panel. I think it sold for $270 as opposed to $380 for the T-4X.
It just occurred to me, I wonder if it had anything to do with the
NOVICE prohibition against transmitter VFOs. I don't recall if that
prohibition was still around in 1961...??

The photo was on the front panel of the T-4XB manual, and I have seen
ONE T-4B, but I doubt if more than 300-400 of both models were sold, if
that. We just saw one here that had a serial number of 254, and it was
an 'end of life' convert according to Bill Frost.

Mike - if you're an ARRL member there are lots of articles in past QST
magazines that may get you started.

One series by Doug DeMaw W1FB (SK) might be a good place to start. It was a
four-part series titled "Basic Equipment Servicing" that ran in QST from
December 1981 thru March 1982. You can download them from the Archives
section of the ARRL web site.

Good Luck!

I am new to radio repair and have some Hammarlund and Drake rigs I would

I have read that using a VTVM and a Signal generator is very helpful in this

signal generator.
My question is, is this the correct choice and should I endeavor to acquire
and learn to use them.

Good Day All,

Well, I think taht an update may well be in order here, as to the outcome of
my "...red-neck hillbilly" (apologies to all you mountain-dwelling folk
reading this) "fix" in the matter of improving the shielding of the PTO can
in my Drake T-4X transmitter...

In a word: it WORKS!!!

SO FAR it works, anyway...again to-day I've completed several CQ calls on
40-meters CW, and was engaged in a couple of lengthy rag chews---and there
was NONE of the previous intermittent tell-tale frequency jumpiness /
intermittent creeping / jiggling... NOTHING. Needless-to-say, I'm very
pleased.

Keep in mind, however, that my situation here was probably unique from most
others: I had repeatedly removed & replaced the PTO shield cover here in
efforts to track-down what turned-out to be at least one bad solder joint in
the tank circuit. No doubt this served to compromise the integrity of the
shielding of the can. Additionaly, my station is situated in a very cold
basement environment, AND I have a fan extracting air out of the final
2x6JB6A PA cage, which by default, cools the entire inside of the
transmitter...

The rig's warm-up cycle was far from normal, as a result, I'm sure...

Anyway, FWIW guys, don't neglect the critical effect that even the smallest
of gap changes in shielding seams can have upon the field of that
permeable-tuned tank coil, and by consequence, your transmit frequency. The
aluminum strip shielding technique employed here may be far from
eye-pleasing, but the benefits of its presence sure are a joy to the ear...!
Hi Hi.

Here's hoping that my travails may ultimately benefit another(s) in the
Drake community...

[Drakelist] West Coast Drake repair?

2011-01-11 Thread Terrell Hamilton
Hi, Gang -

Do any of you know of someone on the west coast who repairs
radios? Anyone in WA, OR and CA?

I'd like to get my boxes tuned up by a pro, but hate to see them bounced
though the mail/UPS/FedEx system, even double boxed. (Not to mention the
price...)

I could make a "sort-of-vacation" out of a trip down the

Gas for the trip in my car would be about what the freight costs, I think.

Darn new QTH...I am finding a BIG problem, here.
I have a pulsing RF noise about every 40-50 KC. If it were audio I
would describe it as the sound of an old pump, (maybe 10 times a
second) or something. It does top and go...tonight about every 10-15
minutes or so...ot exactly though. It's winter here.

The signal is about 20 KC wide and repeats ever 50 KC.
starts at 80 mtrs goes all the way to 10.

Any ideas, or is there a better list to go to for help on this.
Yes, I have turned off evey breaker in my house in sequence...it ain't
here.

Closest neighbor is about 250 ft.
I'm at a small lake out in the country with maybe 180 houses around
it...only 30% here this time of year.

Re: [Drakelist] TR7 issue - "REFLECTOR" sub-issue

2010-12-13 Thread Terrell Hamilton
So, for instance, if we're using Outlook for email, we should use "reply to
all" rather than just "reply?"

I'm assuming that just using "reply" will NOT send it to the reflector, but
to the originator of the message. Other email programs will probably have
slightly different "buttons" to push - and then there's Linux, Ubuntu, etc.,
that people are using - it's probably easy for folks just to hit "reply,"
assuming that it will go back to the reflector. You know -dummies like me...

[Drakelist] Uh-oh...

2010-10-03 Thread Terrell Hamilton
Here I am, sitting here reading Drakelist comments. I just glanced up at
the shelf where my TR4C sits, over and to the left of my monitor. I noticed
that the plate control stuck out a little from the front panel. "That's
odd," I said. Naturally, I had to touch it, and give it a little wiggle.
The "thump" sound told me I should have kept my hands to myself. (Sigh)

I'm not sure what happened in there, but I'm going to have to pull it down
and see - what a klutz! I hope it's just a simple mechanical thing. Has
anyone else ever pulled this silly stunt? Come on, fess up - it'll make me
feel so much better. There should have been a lock ring of some kind to
protect it from idiots like me!

I would not use nylon for outside use as it is very susceptible to UV
degradation and will break after a while. Use polyester which is much more
durable. Double braid is much preferred over three strand. And black or dark

[drakelist] Meter Replacement

2008-03-28 Thread Terrell Hamilton
OK, gang - here's a report on the batch of meters for the Drake wattmeters,
MN4's and so forth that K5JG (Jim Gerke) recently purchased and offered
here. I recently destroyed the face and movement on my MN4 and bought one
from Jim - he operates out of www.hamspec.us

Anyway, it came a while back, extremely well packaged and wrapped, BTW. I
experimented with some cheap Chinese enamel spray paint on the old meter
face and some old CD cases to make the bottom half of the new, clear face
into a black one. I went for the $.97 can instead of the $3.97 Krylon. Even
though I shook it up like crazy, it didn't dry well. I will never buy the
cheap stuff again - I finally figured out how to keep the paint from
bleeding under the tape, and did a pretty good job on the new meter face. I
used magic mending tape instead of masking tape because it gave a much
sharper line.

The cheap paint kind of thinned out in places, like it didn't take to the
surface too well (remember, use the Krylon), but it was just around the
inside edges, and a little black permanent marker on the outside keeps the
light from showing through, and now you can't tell my MN4 was ever damaged
at all. The meter is a perfect replacement!

Anyone with a need for one of these meters should pick one up - the price is
way below anything I found, and his shipping is reasonable as well.

Darrell Bellerive <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang

Last night my Drake 2-B receiver displayed a new problem.

Over a period of a few seconds the normal static and static crashes on 80
metres was supplanted by loud static, which was maintained for several
seconds and then over a period of a few more seconds subsided. This whole
process repeated a few times. The loud static was smoother than the normal
atmospheric static and sounded more like white noise.

This loud static or white noise had no static crashes and movement of the
preselector did not affect the level. The s-meter followed the level of this

noise. The RF and AF gain controls functioned normally as did all other
controls on the radio and the 2BQ. The top of the cabinet also felt much
hotter than normal particularly over the power transformer side of the
cabinet.

Since the preselector did not affect the level of the noise, it is unlikely
the noise was coming in on the antenna and therefore was generated
internally. Looking at the schematic the preselector is on the input side of

the RF amp and the s-meter on the output side of the last IF amp, so the
problem could be anywhere in between.

Any ideas?

Another problem I have noticed is that the 'A' band receives 80 meters
exactly
like the 80 meter band does even though there is no crystal in the 'A' band
crystal jack. I suspect that the 80 meter crystal may have been jumpered to
the 'A' band crystal jack, but am curious as to why. The receiver seems to
function equally well on both bands.

I purchased the receiver last September at a hamfest and have not opened up
the rig, so have not inspected the crystal area inside the chassis.

Other than a bit of hum and a little distortion on AM signals detected on
the
diode detector, the radio has worked very well.

I have been collecting parts to recap the receiver and add the 'A' band to
160
meter mod, test all the tubes, and do a clean up, lube, and realignment.
Also
possibly do the AF Mod de W7ZFB, and the B&B hum mod.

Looks like I will finally have to look under the hood.

73,
Darrell

I did the same thing with crystals in the FT-243 holders when I was a
Novice in the early sixties. I used toothpaste as the abrasive for
moving them up in frequency. To go lower, I'd mark a corner with a lead
pencil. That made 'em a little heavier and they'd go lower in frequency.

The crystals used by the Drake rigs are in all metal holders with the
top part of the can soldered to the base. It's tough to get them open
without damaging the quartz.

RE: [drakelist] Crystals To Swap...?

2008-02-17 Thread Terrell Hamilton
Hi, Eddy -

Do you think you could "sand down" the frequency on a
crystal close to the one you want? I don't know what kind of crystals are
in your receivers, or even +how it would work for receivers, but it worked
for me for transmitting on my old homebrew rig.

Way back in the day(late 50's), when I was a teenage novice with not much
money, I remember sanding down crystals that were given to me by other hams.
It worked pretty good and gave me different frequencies to use on my crystal
controlled 6146 xmtr.

The crystals had to be the kind that are in a plastic case that opens up and
It only worked one way, of course - can't add material to them,
unfortunately - and I forget if sanding them made freqs go up or down - it
seems to me that it would make the freq higher the more you sand, but that's
just an educated (?) guess. I remember opening up the little plastic case,
sanding them down, putting them back in the case and then transmitting and
monitoring to see what new frequency they were.

Sometimes I broke them, or went too far out of the novice band, but
eventually I had a few crystals that I could switch out if the band got
crowded on my single frequency xmtr.

It was kind of tedious, but it gave me a pretty good "poor man's VFO". If
you've got lots of crystals that you don't mind experimenting with, it might
be a possibility that could work.

What do you think, folks? Rcvr crystals are probably different, don't open
up, and there's probably some technical reason that makes this a ridiculous
suggestion.

Hi All,

I'm curious if anyone reading this might be interested in possibly swapping
HC-6/U crystals for use in the R-4 series of receivers...

I have a bunch here of various frequencies, but none in "0.1" or "0.6"
increments, unfortunately --- they're "oddball" when it comes to what the
R-4 prefers to see, but for casual SWL'ing they still work A-OK...

I sure would like something in & around the 20.6-MHz range, so that I might
be able to listen to at least a portion(s) of the 9-MHz SWL BC band (one of
my favourite places in the spectrum back some 39 years ago).

So, what say...? What might you have to trade out there, & what particular
"rocks" are you looking for that I might have here...?

Not getting Drakelist posts can sometimes be due to ISP issues. For
example, AOL periodically deletes incoming and outgoing email without
warning or notice to the sender or recipient. And since AOL is a vast
source of spam, some ISPs will turn off incoming email from AOL for a period
of time. And finally, some ISPs have spam filters that do not permit
incoming email from AOL, ever, and the user has no control over the filter
that blocks AOL. I'm sure there are other issues related to not getting the
posts. I hope things improve so you can enjoy interchanges with Drake
enthusiasts.

And don't forget the Drake Forum at Hamvention, the Drake Technical Net, and
the Drake and Antique Tube Gear Net!

You're coming through OK, Richard-

I don't know why it is, and I'd love to know, but I don't
receive ANY of the posts I make to the Drakelist - so I guess the only way
we know if our message is getting through is if someone replies. Maybe I'm
doing something wrong - if so, I hope someone tells me.

[drakelist] MN-4 parts

2008-02-08 Thread Terrell Hamilton
Greetings, all -

While I was moving my ham shack around, I clumsily bashed
the meter faceplate on my formerly pristine MN-4. I not only need the
faceplate, but either the meter movement or an entire meter. Does anyone
have a junker they'd like to sell? Or know where to get another meter? I
tried to access the parts database, but I guess my password has become
invalid.

Ok Thanks Garey

Yep the old mind transposed once again.

Yes the crystal is grounded just fine. This is a new xtal.

I suppose now I need to pad C2 some how.

The crystal in my R-4A receiver was off by a lot and the new one was
right on. When I ordered them I made sure
I got a pair that was temperature oriented in such a way to keep the Tx
Rx pair with the same drift characteristics
as was mentioned in one of your articles I read somewhere.
Actually the old T4X crystal was closer to 5645 then the new one. Any
other ideas would be helpful.

I enjoyed seeing your picture in the Electric Radio. Boy you're a young
handsome devil!!!

Thanks Jim

I had the same problem recently, Howard - I found a pinout in one of the
electronics catalogs that are always being sent to me. I'll see if I can
hunt it up again for you.

Hi folks,
I just bought a home-made power supply--that you all no doubt have seen--for

the drake transmitter line. It has a Jones female plug hanging from it.
Wonder if someone could tell me how to count the pins and what I should find

on each one? Would like to know that it's right before I hook it up.

Thanks lots.

: Well, it seems there is light at the end of the tunnel.
:
:
: Here's what I've done:
:
:1) Cleaned up the grime and dust using Q-tips and alcohol.
:2) Applied DeoxIT to all switch contacts, tube sockets, and
: the T/R relay.
:3) Checked all the tubes on my TV-7A to make sure there were
: not any obvious problems.
:4) Checked all resistance measurements against the table in
: the TR-3 manual. The first time through, several of the
: measurements were way out. It turns out the T/R relay
: contacts were in dire need of cleaning; beyond what DeoxIT
: was able to do.
:5) Installed a grounded cord in the AC-3.
:6) Checked the power supply voltages. All were within spec,
: and the AC ripple was less than 175 mA on all the supplies.
: All parts on the supply are original!
:
: I plugged the radio and power supply together and tried to receive
: any signals. Nothing. Rats... !!
:
: Here is a major DUH!!!
:
: It seems I needed to plug in the RV-3 to make everything work. Out
: of the box, there is a jumper installed in the TR-3 to allow it to
: work without a remote VFO. If you add the remote VFO, you need to
: remove the jumper. So without the remote VFO plugged in, the receive
: section was effectively disabled.
:
: Once I got everything put together correctly, I was finally able to
: receive a 40m broadcast.
:
: Next on the list is to check all the voltages against the table in
: the manual and then go through the alignment procedure.
:
: Unfortunately, that will probably have to wait until the weekend :-(
:
:
: Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions.

Peronally, I'd just change it over to another type of jack. This is one case
where "keeping things original" defies all sense, common or otherwise.

You know, Jim - I don't know how they match up size-wise, but it looks just
like those European converter plugs that attach on the line cord end of US
electric razers. If they fit, maybe a little fabrication could get you that
case of plugs.
