Re: [Drakelist] How to clean Drake knobs?

2010-02-15 Thread sebdesn

I have removed the knobs from my T-4XC and am trying to get the white
stripe white again. The stripe is an off white and cleaning in hot
soapy water has not helped. Has anyone found an easy way to make
them white without repainting them?

Mine are clean, but you might try toothpaste and a soft tooth brush...(just
a thought, hopefully not to off the wall))

As others said, "inverted "L". I don't have an amp, but I have one
about 45' vertical and 80' horiz. I use a SGC 230 auto tuner at the
base and it tunes 160 to 10 at the change of the band switch..Also has
a ground screen/radial system under it. Unless you know its there ,
due to the fact it goes up and over/between some trees, its invisible.
Don't remember if the Drake tuner will end feed wires however..

Since those two pins have 120v on em I use a 6pin male plug,The two
end pins are shorted internally. Those two pins go into the 2 pins
needed to turn it on,on the 10 pin plug.
The two pins that need to be closed on the 10 pin plug and the 6 pin
plug, shorted pins are on the ends so the plugs only have those two
connections between them...hope thats clear?? Mark the two plugs with
some whiteout so you get em in correctly. To get the DC out I
soldered a#10 insulated wire to a tab that slips in the end of the DC
out put plug and thence to the load...

I read this three times and it may or not make sense..If it doesnt I
will draw a pic and scan it for whoever needs it..

Its not that hard. The important thing I found was to get a dental

I made up a shorting male plug for the female end of the control cable
to turn it off and on and use it to power all my "rice boxes",,,
bullet proof...Only problem I have had was when I was powering up the
sgc 230 tuner. It got rf back into the ps 7 and kicked the internal

I had a 4-1000 amp that had a couple of huge oil filled caps.(utility co.
correction)Power off, I could discharge them with a screwdriver to ground,
then go back in a couple of minutes, still power off, and they would be built
up with enough to draw a nice arc when discharged again... scary...Triple
checked the bleeder resistors after I found that.. Suspect that might be the

Thanks guys for the replies..
Looks like the unit will probably be unusable for me, as I have very,
very strong broadcast stations nearby...
K1NR said there was a resistor change needed for use on the R4C.
I will probably not bother with using it since I can measure 8 or 9v of
voltage at the end of my inverted L . The TR7 has an AM filter and goes down
to "0", (used to hear WWV 20kc), so that would probably be the reasonable
way to go...Or even the GPR90...
Guess that goes to show, that all the "great finds" in the junk box, may
not be all that great...

Guys, The whole fix was the result of Bill Frost suggesting to make sure the
24v was at the VCO board and then when it was, to check that choke, which
was open. That board had never been out of the rig before the problem. It
was not out until Bill suggested I check it...When I unsoldered it one lead
came loose from the body of the choke, but I don't know if I did it
unsoldering it or it was already cracked. There Is also the possibility that
when the original damage to the P/s board occurred it took out the choke. I
guess when the 24v goes away from the VCO board the display reads 96
MHzAnyway It was Bills direction that led to the fix...

[drakelist] TR7 Display Problem

2005-02-24 Thread sebdesn

Well finally

Wanted to post the resolution for the archives in case anyone else has this
problem.
Many thanks to Bill Frost who had the final answer, and Garey Barrell, and
Peter VE3AX for some good troubleshooting suggestions.
The rig showed 96800.0 on powerup(20m and below) and drifted down
slightly. VFO did not change anything. Counter worked properly in "ext"mode.
All voltages from p/s board were OK. 10R and 10T on main board were ok and
switched properly xmit/ rcv. All oscillator freqs were there and right on.
The problem was choke RFC508 which is in the 24v circuit to the VCO
board. It is on the VCO board and is in a position that could be easily
damaged inserting the board. Replaced that, fired things up, and all is
well. Will align and put on the air..
Again thanks to all who helped. This is a great list and in my case, a
real lifesaver!!!

Nothing heard here in New Mexico.
Course 40m at near noon isn't likely to work back east from here.
Maybe a 20m freq would be a better choice and worth a try ? ?

It's also 2 kc from Highnoon Net on 7240 that is mostly NM AZ and CO
stations.Wasn't there today but think NCS is in ABQ on Sun...

[drakelist] TR7 Display Problem

Last message was garbled a bit, lets try this...

Garey,
Thanks for the response.
I went back and re measured all the voltages.
on RECV
10R= 10v
10T=0v
on XMIT (on parent board)
10R=0v
10T=10v

Power supply outputs
Pin 1 -5v=-3.5v
pin 2 26v=23.2v
pin 3 ground
pin 4 3.8v
pin 5 6.5v
pin 6 4.4v
pin 7 5.3v
pin 8 3.8v
pin 9 11-16v input= 13.4v
pin 10 10v= 10v
pin 11 5v=5v
pin 12 ground

Not sure why 10R and 10T are now OK. I re seated all the boards. Put an rf
sig gen on the counter and it works perfect. With all the voltages nominal I
am lost. The fixed (but drifting)96700 readout seems to be twice the IF freq.
I also cleaned the wafer switches and the calibrator works

Any Ideas short of anchor duty with an eyelet and a rope to moor the boat
to???(I guess solid state rigs don't qualify as boat anchors yet?)

[drakelist] TR7 Display problem

2005-02-10 Thread sebdesn

I have a TR7 that on powerup reads 96670.0 and then drifts down to 96625
after a few minutes. Tuning knob does not change it. Band switch does not
change it except on 15 and 10 meters it goes to 9590.Up, down, store, and
both fixed are out.aux program is on norm and does not change anything,
counter is on norm. Checked +10v and +5v on parent board as ok. In rcv +10T
is .386v and +10R is 0v.
Ps board 26v dc reg is 23.2v. The -5v dc out of the power supply board
is -3.5v. Control voltages are 3.8 6.5 4.4 5.3 3.8v .
About 10 years ago the thing would power up at (I think)37XXX and hunt.
Talked to Drake and they said check a resistor on ps board. Did, and it was
smoked and replaced it.Still did not play, was busy and put it on shelf till
now.
  Any direction would be appreciated.

Also would like to thank Peter VE3AX for his magnum opus on changing of the
pin diodes in the TR7. Just did that on my other one, worked great.

Thanks guys for the info, especially Peter for the instalation direction. I
had printed it out some time ago and could not find it. I am finally done
with my summer kitchen cabinet building project, so I can get to the bench
and back on the air with the TR7.
Thanks again to all who replied!73

There is a similer product called Lexel, it is clear and does not have the
acid residue and
is just as bullet proof as silconeYou can get it at paint stores and
big boxes...Great stuff...

Sterling,

This is a website that sells 1/4" ABS rod, all you need to do is, put a
longer than you need chunk in a drill and round the end and polish it,(use
fine sand paper and rubbing compound), cut it off to length drill a suitable
hole in the other end for the switch, and viola, you be done...That is
assuming there are no other ridges etc to make...

If they are just cylinders, you could just buy solid black rod stock of some
suitable colored plastic and drill and tap for the switch stud and then and
smooth and radius the ends.
If its a turnable,(in a lathe), form put it in your wood lathe, or send it
to me and I will turn it on my metal lathe.I am not sure what it looks like
so a drawing/picture would be helpful.

When I was in the plastics biz, was at a meeting where this guy had the
worlds greatest invention , and wanted us to make/market it. It was a clear
plastic plate that fit under a toilet seat and kept things from hitting the
water and splashing you...Made a very quick and exit from meeting and
ROFLAO'ed a lot

RE: [drakelist] TR-7

2004-02-04 Thread sebdesn

Well Folks, all this talk about the TR7 has made me decide to get off the
dime and see if I can get my 2 going. Bought em both new. Hope the rcvr is
better than the 745 Im using on 160.Have a BC xmtr about two miles down the
street...not good...
One of em has the pin diodes out of it, and the other has a problem in the
display,it won't lock up.There was a resistor that was blown out on the
front board and the ferrite choke, or what ever it is, is cracked. When I
get em apart will ask for some of the great advice I see here..
Incidently my first Drake was the 2c and a Ranger, then R4B, T4xb then the
TR7's. Wish I still had em all!
