Any help with locating any QSL route or info for EL2DX
I worked on CW back on 9 July 2004? I have sent QSLs
to K8SJP and receive no answers. Any help

[DX-CHAT] Make a better spot

2006-07-21 Thread Gary Stone
Greetings all,

OK - with some encouragement from others I would like
to again propose a "system" for spotting. I really
believe it would work and be very helpful.

The suggested format:

dx ...

And it would be like this example:

DX YU6AO 14.190 59.W5.4L QSX 14.200

This would mean that I am hearing YU6AO with a 59
signal in W5 land and I am using a 4 element
directional antenna and that station is listening on
14.200.

The 'codes' could be:

for simply use prefix - that would
narrow it down enough, 9A, W6, 9Y, GW, etc. - so that
the others who see the spot would know the general
location (not just the DXCC of origin). I see a spot
from a W5 and wonder why I am not hearing the station
and then look up the station and see they are in
Maryland (for example).

for this does not have to be too
complex. How about 1L for non directional antenna,
and then 2L, 3L, etc. for number of elements for a
directional antenna. Then when I see a spot for a YU6
from a station in W5 and it is on 80 meters and I
can't hear them with my poor dipole and then see their
spot and realize they are using a 2 element
directional antenna - makes sense.

The above plan would also allow for some serious data
gathering my computer program to keep a good record of
prop from various areas.

What do others think?

Gary, N5PHT

Re: [DX-CHAT] Spotting DX (be a better spotter)

2006-07-21 Thread Gary Stone
Jim and others,

YES - and YES but ALSO I have long advocated for the
spot to have some information about the spotter! I
often use:

dx 14.002 YU6DZ 589.w5.3L

Which means that I am hearing YU6DZ on 14.002 and he
is 589 in W5 land and I am using a 3 element
directional antenna. Then when I see a spot I get a
better idea aboout the prop to my area.

[DX-CHAT] e-qsl walnut plaque ??

2004-03-02 Thread Gary Stone
Hi,

I qualifed (notifed by email from e-qsl staff) that I qualified for one of the "free walnut plaques."  This is for their e-dx100.  The first x number (don't remember how many) were to receive a free walnut plaque and they told me I was one of the free ones.  I have been told a few things but most recently they have on my award pages "shipped 7 February 2004" and I still have not received this plaque.  I qualifed for it several months ago.

Has anyone received one of the plaques?  Recent emails to eqsl have not been answered.  Just curious.

I agree completely but I have had two times lately the DX op and in the other case the DX manager - both Russian said in emails to me:   NO CASH in bold print and said "please use IRC instead."  So, that is my only reason.  I have used $$ for years with great success.  I have worked 326 and cfm 326 DXCC but now trying for it on CW 73 de N5PHT, Gary

[DX-CHAT] IRC question please

2004-02-10 Thread Gary Stone
Hi,

I have heard it said that an IRC 'must be stamped.'  Can someone give me a little more details please?  Is this the 'date/time' stamp the post office uses?  My local post office finally got a few IRCs and don't know how to stamp them.  I suggested they look it up in their manuals but I don't know...

What is the proper way to 'stamp' an IRC?

Also, if one is sent (I just did) to Russia, for example, and it is not stamped will it be useless?  Or does that depend on the country it is heading for?

I have cfm 325 dxcc on ssb with $$ but now trying for CW and some of the Russian countries are telling me in email to send ONLY ircs and NO CASH.  So, I am now able to buy them from my local post office but I need to know the proper procedure.

I remember that in 2002 Vlad was in Central America and worked from a lot of ''entities there, and he said it was OK to QSL either direct to his homecall in Russia OR to his AC4LN address, but the US-address should take longer time as he picks up the mail when he is in USA. I sent my cards to the AC4LN address and got reply in spring 2003, those postmarked in Russia. He is not only a good operator but a good QSL'er. However, I don't know about bureau cards as the cost for that service in Russia has gone up very high recently. Maybe we shall try to convince as many DX'ers we know to use LoTW. I had a QSO from last night confirmed via LoTW today, 9V1GO on 160 meters, and Singapore is rare here in Europe on Top Band.

Hi to everyone,

Thanks to all that responded.  Got the answer.  I spoke to one of the ops just a few minutes ago on 10 meters SSB and he said they received no permission for 30 meters.  So, no 30 meters for this particular dx-pedition (ce0y/sp9pt, sp9evp, etc.).  There is another dx-pedition there either now or soon and I don't know about them.

Re: [DX-CHAT] DX Cluster help/suggestion

2003-10-10 Thread Gary Stone
Hi,

ALL I suggested was a way to make the spots more useful.  Some of us really enjoy studying propagation and enjoy trying to learn a little from time to time.  If a station is hearing the DX and I am not I am very interested in learning why - which usually ends in a lesson in propagation / antenna interaction / QTH etc.

When a W5 spots the DX and I can't hear the dx sometimes the W5 is actually on the east coast or the west coast - which could explain a lot.  My suggesting has nothing to do with making working the dx any easier and has nothing to do with an "easier softer way."

I think you should not get credit for working DX unless you mined all the minerals in your radio like the cooper and aluminum and then manufactured the components and then personally built the rig from the parts you personally made.  The design would have to original of course.  Then of course you could only use an antenna if it was totally a new design as you certainly would not want to use an antenna that makes it easier to work the dx - that would somehow be cheating and someone would accuse you of not trying.  Don't put the antenna on a tower - in fact dig a hole 80 feet deep and bury the antenna.  Then you go cut down some trees and make the paper stock for your log book...then...then...  and don't forget that you should surrender your license and then get another license if you can find a hard way to get it - like find a VEC that makes you stand on your head with cotton in your ears and still copy 85 wpm to get your new license.  Then,
and only then, can you say it was not 'given' to you on a silver platter.

Sorry if I offended anyone - but I feel better :-)

Now, could we get back to improving the usefulness of the spots?

[DX-CHAT] DX Cluster help/suggestion

2003-10-10 Thread Gary Stone
Hi,

This is N5PHT, Gary, writing from North Texas.  I once before suggested this idea and it really didn't catch on - maybe I did not try it long enough and would really like to try again if there is some support.

The DX spots could be made in a uniform way that would really give helpful info in a short space.  For example, if I spot a DX station and in the info area I put:

579.W5.D.10

That would mean I am cpy the dx 579 and I am in W5 land and I am using a dipole (D) and it is up 10 meters.  It would be easy to devise a simple uniform reporting system.

For example, the antenna:

B2- beam (with the number designation being the number of elements)
D- diopole
V- vertical

It would not need to be elaborate to help make the spot more useful.  When I see a spot and it says 'strong hr' that does not really mean much.  The spotter may be using a 3 element beam up 25 meters and that would explain why I am not hearing the dx with a dipole at 10 meters.

So, the suggested syntax:

RST.PREFIX.ANTENNA.HEIGHT

You could include (I think I did last time I suggested this) a power designator but what really matters is hearing the DX.  If I spot the BQ9P this morning it would be:

459.W5.B3.14

And that would give useful information.  You could even add a grid square to make it more precise?

Ideas?

[DX-CHAT] Allentown PA dxers?

2003-10-07 Thread Gary Stone
Hi,

I have been reading a lot (as has lots of hams) about this BPL technology and some say it will wipe out HF.  Well, I have finally (it took awhile) found a company actually offering the technology.  It is the PP&L (Penn Power and Light) in Allentown, PA.  They told me on the phone it was about the speed of DSL and it was using the power lines to offer the Internet.

So, what about the hams in Allentown?  What is your experience?  Is it causing interference?

Sorry if this is off topic but if DX'ing is wiped out by BPL - wow!!

I have heard the ARRLs view and saw their demo of a mobile station under the electric wires somewhere - but I don't think it said where.  But now I know that Allentown PA PP&L is offering this to customers.  SO - can we find some dx'ers there with first hand experience?

Re: [DX-CHAT] Yemen

2003-09-02 Thread Gary Stone
Hi,

Well, for what it is worth here is my thoughts.  I am sitting at 325 and of the 10 I have left, several (3 or 4) have "no likely chance" of operations.  Why keep them on the list? If a country does not allow activity from an entity I would like to see them go off the 'active' list.  However, I do remember a brief operation from Yemen just last year - and I missed that one too.

This could be handled by starting an 'inactive' list and then using the active list to determine honor roll, etc.  I am not just complaining but really wonder why an entity would be keeping someone from 'top of the honor roll' when there is no possibility of operations from there.  If a legit operation started the entity could be moved back to the active list.  Just an idea - probably full of holes but just an idea.

It would require some bugs to work out but I think it could happen.  As for me, I have hopes that the 3C0 dx-pedition will put me on honor roll and 'top of the honor roll' is a long way off :-).

[DX-CHAT] Angola question

Hi,

This is N5PHT. I know this is a stretch but you never
know what ham radio can do - so I am asking. A
co-worker is trying to find someone in her family.
The only information she has:

>Name: Jorge de Silva
>Place lived in 1971: Luanda, Angola
>
>He was attending some college over there then joined
>the military. His family lived there and he
>supposedly had other family members who were military

I know that is very much a long shot - and 30 years
ago at that! But, you just never know if someone knew
someone, etc. etc. Any HAMS out there in Angola that
can email? Or any hams that have operated there might
give any input. As far as I know this man was not a
ham.

I have worked several hams from Angola but I think

[DX-CHAT] slightly off topic but good for dxing

2003-01-01 Thread Gary Stone
Hi,

Slightly off topic but I wanted to let other dx'ers
know my success in dealing with some TVI. I got it
all resolved in normal tvi reduction ways except on 40
meters in which my dxing was limited to QRP if the
family was watching tv.

Well, we got a new dvd and needed a switch box to
control everything and purchased a Philips Magnavox
"Audio/Video Selector with RF Modulator"
and tvi is all but gone! I can now at least run 100
watts and no problem! That little box 'cured' the
problem. Why ?? Who knows but I can do some 40 meter
dxing now so I am not looking further. Just wanted to
share the idea if anyone is having trouble. And, BTW
I am using a Direct TV dish. I did not have problems
with my beam (A4S) on 10, 15 and 20 but with the
dipole 40 meters was a tvi problem and I tried several
things - even moved the antenna to a different
location (a dipole) but still could not use 40 more
than 5 watts until I put in this switchbox and now I
can run 100 watts. My amp is in the Amp Doctors but
will try more power in a few weeks.

[DX-CHAT] question about buro

2002-12-22 Thread Gary Stone
Hi,

I worked CP1UU on cw and he said to qsl via the buro
100. He repeated this a few times. Does that mean to
send a $1 with the card to the Buro ? Can you do
that?

Does anyone have a qsl route on cp1uu. He was on 15
meter cw this afternoon (Sun - 22 Dec) with a good sig
into Texas.

[DX-CHAT] Pratas Cards

2002-10-13 Thread Gary Stone

Hi,

I am writing about the latest (June 02) Pratas Island
dx-pedition. Are some of you waiting qsl cards? I
have been following the various dx bulletins and it
seems that several reported getting them and then it
seems to have stopped. I remember reading a post from
Steve explaining how he works on various piles (and I
know he has a ton of cards to sort with all his
different qsl management) and then makes the rounds
again later? That is probably what is happening but I
thought I would ask.

I just wondered if others are waiting or perhaps
something snagged? Please no flames for my asking.
No major deal - just wondering. September 2003 is
quite a long ways away!! :-)

Re: [DX-CHAT] DXCC - lets talk

2002-09-04 Thread Gary Stone

Hi,

Yes, World Radio has this type award available. But,
it would be nice to the see the ARRL offer such an
award. Many awards are duplicated by different
organizations (CQ, World Radio, ARRL, etc.). The
Worldradio award has an interesting prohibition to
portable type calls. e.g. Ed in North Korea doesn't
count even though he has lived there for several years
now but someone who receives a call for 2 weeks use
would count as long as it is not portable with a
slash.

I would like to see the ARRL sponsor such an award but
there may not be enough interest.

Re: [DX-CHAT] DXCC - lets talk

2002-09-03 Thread Gary Stone

Hi to all,

First of all - I have worked and confirmed KP1, KP5
and KH7K. (but I do need some tiny little islands).
So, I am not advocating something just because I need
some new ones myself.

How about the ARRL developing a new DX award? This
one would be something along the lines of "Worked
Countries" (DXWC) award - not entities. I would
suggest using a simply country list - like from the
CIA Worldbook or the United Nations, etc. I know that
this would limit the number of entries but at least
they would be real countries. I realize some will say
that the DXCC was not meant to be countries but rather
it is entities. However, my DXCC certificate
(#20,125) says:

"stations in at least one hundred different
countries."

Countries - not entities. Scar Reef (one I worked but
the ARRL says it was no good - now thats goofy - a 20
story hotel would be ok but not a 10 foot scaffold -
but that is another story) is a tiny hunk of rock in
disputed waters. At high tide it is only a few feet
of real estate! The IOTA program is great for these
tiny pieces of earth but to call them entities and
much less countries is strange.

Well, enough of a soapbox but I would love to see
someone petition the ARRL for a new (additional - so
not to upset the apple cart of the current DXCC) award
for chasing true countries. Any votes yes?

Re: [DX-CHAT] T5 activity 1992-93

2002-07-30 Thread Gary Stone

Hi All,

I worked a T5/N9OQS March 1, 1993 and the ARRL says it
is not good as it was a shipboard operation. Don't
know if it was military or what but it was not land
based so it did not count.

[DX-CHAT] A5 questions

2002-06-26 Thread Gary Stone

Hi,

I just had my A51B card rejected by the ARRL. I
called the DXCC desk and they said they have no
documentation for any of the 4 stations I have worked
(bummer). They are:

A51B, A50A, A52PC and A52OM.

I have email for two of the above and have written
them personally to ask but has anybody any ideas?

Thanks,

Gary Stone, N5PHT

[DX-CHAT] What about a new list

2002-06-25 Thread Gary Stone

Hi,

Presented just for discussion. I would personally
like to see a new type DXCC by someone that listed
only countries - not entities. For example, the World
Radio magazine does have such an award and their list
is a lot more in line with countries not entities.
However, they won't accept a portable type call (like
Ed in N. Korea)?? Oh well, can't have everything.
But at least their list don't have places like VU4, 7
or Scar, etc.

What about a list of true countries for an award to
seek? I just looked at the ARRL page and the "most
needed" have 9 Islands in the top 15 most needed. My
personal list of needed (10 DXCC) has only one or two
countries - Yemen and Palestine and the rest are some
island in the middle of nowhere. Does anyone know of
an award for worked countries that are countries
instead of entities? I know the DXCC is the most
accepted but I might be willing to try another.

To spend thousands to go to an island in the middle of
nowhere that is uninhabited has gotta raise an eyebrow
or two. Don't get me wrong - I love working an "all
time new one" but how far will we keep stretching the
envelop just to make a 'new one?'

I wish we could separate IOTA from Countries/Entities.
Just my humble opinion. Maybe someone needs to come
up with a "Worked UN Nations" award?
