Hello Rag. I'm glad to see that you can still stir things up old friend!
I feel that I must add one more thought to what was already commented on.
Remember that those were the days long before the "technologies" mentioned.
Many of these operators were able to send with a BUG with either hand while
keeping PAPER logs going with the other. Also, the QSLs were filled out by
hand too. I laugh at the comment concerning Fred Astaire that Ginger Rogers
once made. "I did everything that Fred did. I did it while going backwards and
wearing high heels!" Maybe a pair of high - nah! forget it!

[DX-CHAT] [dx-chat] dumbing down tests

2006-12-26 Thread Rod WC7N
Boy I thought things had gone to hell in a hand basket when the FCC dumbed
down the amateur radio exams but today, I saw just a small portion of a
newspaper article that said the federal government had directed the state of
Oregon to lower the passing score for the state administered High School
standardized exam. It now appears that too many are flunking the exam.

Why should I be surprised.

Re: [DX-CHAT] [DX-chat} spam

2006-10-21 Thread Fred Stevens K2FRD
If you belong to any Yahoo Groups or have, or ever have had a Yahoo ID and/or
Yahoo email address, it is important to survey your Yahoo Marketing
Preferences. When one joins Yahoo, it automatically checks all the clickboxes
in an account's marketing preferences such that unless they are unchecked,
whole bunches of unrequested email solicitations are sent. To uncheck these
clickboxes, go to My Yahoo http://my.yahoo.com/, log in, go to My Account, then
scroll down to and click onto "Edit Your Marketing Preferences". You'll find a
long laundry list of marketing topics which, if the boxes are still checked
will create a lot of unwanted email.

If you have never belonged to Yahoo, then the source of such spam is someplace
else. I own/moderate 13 Yahoo Groups, belong to 52 Groups, and have five Yahoo
alias addresses, do not receive spam from any Yahoo addresses, but help a lot
of people who do receive such spam, mostly due to the checked boxes in Yahoo's
marketing preferences for members.

Yahoo does indeed filter both outgoing and incoming messages with Yahoo
addresses, but very often overdoes it and blocks legitimate email. There is no
such thing as an effective spamblocker at the ISP or mail server level, so such
blockers capture some, but pass other messages. It's not a perfect system.

I'd be happy to help to trace the sources off-list, but cannot guarantee
success.

John gave us a very nice studyof confirmation methods... My own rate gives
me a little better return on buro, but I am vy happy to see the vy high
return rate on direct mail. Hearting

Now, why DX does not use Log book of world

Being small DX now, I can speculate
-need computr logging... computers are not a standard item in many places in
the world.
-need Internet access-- same as above and also upload times are extended and
expensive in parts of the world.
-lack of ease of use of the lbotw...much harder than my internet banking,
for example.

-limited usage of English.
-getting registered is a pain when overseas away from dear blessed America.

And then there is eQSLs...not very satisfying... I like paper that I can
touch and really, an eQSL is just another internet message oh hum.

[DX-CHAT] [dx-chat] QSL METHODS

2006-08-24 Thread John Maikisch

I was just sending out some DX QSL
cards and did some quick calculations on percent return for my effort. Now these
are my numbers and my opinion and certainly may not reflect the  ham
community in general.

The terms I use are:

PRICE = what it costs me to get a card
USAGE = my uninformed guess at how many
DX hams use this method
TIME = how long it takes me to get a
confirmation
CONVENIENCE = how easy it is for me to use this
method
% QSO's CONFIRMED = how many of my total
DX QSO's have been confirmed by this method

By the way, I QSL 100% all DX
QSO's. All by the Bureau and also LOTW. Direct only for those I deem important
for some reason and I include SASE, postage and contribution when
appropriate.

The numbers are:

LOTW - price= cheapest, usage = not many, time =
fastest method, convenience = OK but could be better, % QSO's confirmed <
10%

BUREAU - price = reasonable, usage = most, time =
years, convenience = easiest to use, % QSO's confirmed ~ 33%

DIRECT - price = very expensive (but if you need
the card?), usage = most DX  will respond to a direct request, time = weeks
to months but never years, convenience = a lot of work, % QSO's confirmed = I
get return on 99% of cards I send out direct

Maybe this is not worth the
bandwidth I used but as N2ERN says I am just wasting a few electrons
not some trees.

I know that a lot of DX stations do not like LOTW
for some reasons but it sure can makes my life easier.

My observations through the years is that the "bad apples" who generate QRM
and engage in outrageous behaviour on the air are also comporting themselves
in the same manner in their everyday lives.
I disagree with one of the writers who alleged that most of the violators
are old timers, extra class etc.
Years ago intentional QRM was almost unheard of and operators did not have
the luxury of split nor a VFO. You were limited to a handful of crystals.
Perhaps newer is not always better in spite of the sophisticated equipment
we now have. If you have a poor operator at the helm then you expect low
grade performance.

Scott, I don't buy that argument, with all due respect. License
class, how long licensed, code knowledge, etc, don't matter a hill of
beans. It's who you are naturally outside of radio that determines
what kind of ham you'll be on the air. If you're the kind of guy who
drives with one finger out the window, blows through stop signs at 20
MPH when nobody's looking and generally acts like a boor behind the
wheel, chances are your behaviour on the air will match that attitude.

It's quite telling to listen to Riley Hollingsworth's speeches at
Hamfests. He emphasizes every time that the hams who give him
headaches the size of small Central American countries are invariably
old-school extras and advanced hams who've been licensed since time
immemorial; oldpharts who sit on one frequency as if they were deeded
to them by the Great Old Ones themselves and use language that would
fuse copper wires, stunt the growth of small children and lose the
war for the allies. It's generally not the newer hams, according to
the one who prosecutes the offenders.

Personally, I think it comes down to those who take it for granted.
Not too dissimilar to flying in some respects. I've talked to a lot
of senior instructors and flight-safety folks on both sides of the
VE/W border and they agree it's usually high-time older pilots who do
Something Stupid and wind up becoming a headline on the 6 o'clock
news because they took a shortcut -- it's not generally the
newly-minted private pilot with 80 hours under his belt that Screws Up.

Well, your friend's only been a ham for 12-15 years, so it could still
be dumbing down. After all, he is a product of the V.E. licensing system
and never had to take a test in front of an F.C.C. examiner and could
just memorize the question pool to get his ticket. Unless, of course,
your friend is just a jerk. In that case licensing requirements have
nothing to do with his problem.

Almost everybody works hard all day and most don't behave as you friend
did. The real problem is that we don't have any respect for each other
anyone. Part of that problem is the feeling by some people that because
someone has been licensed for a certain length of time or upgraded at a
certain time, that person has less "worth" than someone licensed before
that point. It could be April 15, 2000 or it could be before 1984, when
the V.E. system started. Or it could be a myriad of other points in time
where some mythical standard was changed, like when the Dick Dash books
became available or when the period of time you had to wait before
retaking an exam was shortened. It really doesn't matter, because the
real problem is the belief that we don't need to respect someone because
of how, what kind or when they took a test. The reason we ought to
respect someone should be based on what kind of ham they are, not when
they got their ticket.

As much as it might bother some people, a lot of hams who were licensed
or upgraded after 2000 are pretty good hams, despite the fact that they
didn't have to pass a 20 WPM CW test. Some are ignorant, but ignorance
can be corrected pretty easily- lack of character and maliciousness are
more difficult to deal with.

RE: [DX-CHAT] [dx-CHAT] Gentlemen HAM'S

2006-04-20 Thread Dave
Short of someone's life or limb being in danger, there is no excuse for
transmitting on a DX station's frequency.

Its hard to look someone in the eyes and firmly say "what you're doing is
wrong, and here's why". At least your friend had you to tell him; for all
too many ops, there's no one.

We reap what we sow...

figure why since my antenna on 30 is decent and I tried

Can hear them on 20 CW about S2 and they are really knocking off the

of "UP UP UP" on the frequency and don't believe they are from U.S.

Was Kure really that difficult for west-coast of Europe? Looks like
40, 30 and 20 had decent propagation (at least according to the
software). From ZL8 to GM, yeah, using today's propagation numbers
(SFI=75, K=2), it's pretty decent below 17 to Kermadec, and Banaba's
prediction is pretty decent, too. All three are orders of magnitude
better than the predictions to the Andamans from the east coast and
middle of of NA.

That said, though, of course there are regions of the world that are
extremely difficult from everywhere. For us, anything in SE Asia is a
chore and a half.

Well, I was playing with W6EL Prop the last few days, and it looks
like the area with the worst openings of any place I plugged in is the
midwest. 8s 9s and 0s have the fewest usable slots, with everything
else being equal, and using today's solar numbers. East coast is also
very rough.

At my QTH (about 25 miles west of NYC) they're audible only from about
1300 to 1900 (short path) at anything above noise/ESP level. Sigs
peak, just as W6EL predicts, 1630-1730ish (UTC). I got them on 17
CW/SSB and 20 SSB all between 1600 and 1645 UTC. The 20m CW station
the last two mornings were good from 1400 or so but not listening for
any NA that early.

There's also another smaller window here around to 0100 UTC, but
I didn't hear them last night at any usable signal level when they
were on -- though the midwest seemed to be doing OK then.

Before you ask yes I have worked them, 20 CW/30 CW and could hear
them on 80 this morning but couldn't bust the JA wall.

Congrats! Just played with numbers from VE7 (I guess somewhat closer
to you than Salt Lake, where W6EL was using for W7). Looks like you
have a lot better openings that we right-coasters have. 2 hours on 80,
5.5 hours on 40, 8 on 30, about 14 hours on 20, a bunch on 17 and a
little on 15. Some pretty significant signal levels for 30, 20 and 17
too. You've also got a few hours from the west coast via long path,
too, from about to 0630 UTC, on 14, 18 and 21 MHz, believe it or
not!!

0's and 9s have much lower signal levels and for far fewer hours and
only a faint chance long path for about 90 minutes early in the morning.

For hoots and giggles, I plugged in Spain and Italy just for
funman, must be nice to live in southern Europe, that's all I can
say! Nice long loud openings from 80 to 12! Even northern Europe (I
used Norway) has some great openings all day/night long. JA's of
course, have the best, open around the clock, including 8 hours on
10m! ZS and PY are both pretty hot too, both long and short paths.

Would be nice if certain operators over there understood how short our
openings are, though, and would get the EU wall to sit tight (if
that's possible). I'm extremely happy I got in, believe me! -- but for
the sake of guys with smaller stations, I sure hope they have a shot
at this operation.

Now, here's hoping we don't see another few days with an A of 50

I think the opening is even narrower for W1. Note the times - most east coast
hams are at work during those hours (1300-1900 = 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. local time).

This one will not be easy!

RE: [DX-CHAT] [DX CHAT} KP1/KP5

2005-02-06 Thread mausoptik ltd
Last thing I heard, there was going to be some sort of legal challenge
to the FWS who always refuse permission to go to the islands, citing
some sort of eco-twaddle about damage to habitat etc. I heard that the
challenge was going to be based on the facts that (a) FWS staff
regularly hike all over the islands without apparent damage and (b) that
there are hundreds of illegal squatters from Haiti (or somewhere nearby)
and the FWS don't even bother to evict them any more. Hence I guess the
legal challenge would focus on the hypocrisy of the FWS (I thought that
hypocrisy, ignorance, incompetence and high handed attitude were typical
of US Govt departments, just as they are in the UK?).

I'd heard that an FWS official had been publicly very disparaging about
ham radio saying it was "worthless pastime" etc. Now after the heroic
efforts of the folks on VU4 after the tsunami this person can be rooted
out and publicly exposed as the utter cretin that he/she is...and
the value of the hobby can be shown.

However, I'm 3000 miles away across a big salty puddle, and someone on
your side of the pond may know more! :-)

Re: [DX-CHAT] [dx-chat] Logging programs

2005-01-05 Thread WC7N
OK Charlie. I received recommendations for XMLog (xmlog.com), Xlog,
Logger32 and DXLab. I looked at them all and I really like the xmlog.
Think that would be a great starting place for him (KD5ZPX).

I have used DX4WIN for years and years but am not ready to push him into
chasing dx like I have done for so many years. Now that I only need six
more countries (oops identities) on CW I have been thinking about chasing
IOTA. I don't know but think I am a little old to be beating my head on
something new and going over to SSB would be new. But that is one of the
great things about our crazy hobby.

I am ready to send him my old TS450SAT ,DSP and Keyer when I see proof that
he has taken and passed his general.

Yep I am a proud father.

Since old bulletins are gone from above link, if there is an interest I

Letters to the US FWS will probably not be useful because the dispute is now
in US District Court.
Or in other words, the US FWS is being sued in Federal Court.
Also, a bill has been introduced in the US Congress to require the US FWS to
issue permits.
US hams can write to their congressman asking him/her to support HR 5361.
For more info go to www.dxer.org and click on KP1/KP5 project. It is pdf

Subject: H8A

Somebody mentioned in their coments that an alledged "HP1AC"
mentioned in one cluster that H8A was not legal.
Its is true , HP1AC, Cam put that note on that cluster.

Our DECRETO 302 in Panama that regulates amater radio service
indicates how call signs will be issued, following
Article 19 of ITU International Regulations.

Yes H8A to H9Z is an authorized block of prefixes for Republic
of Panama and according to DECRETO 302 there is
a legal way to used those ITU prefixes plus the Panama Radio
Districts Zones plus two to a maximum three letters
as suffix (ARTICLE 19 of ITU).
So if that was not followed why use the wrong call because
Mr.Gunter Hamacher HP1XVH requested it as short as
possible for the Contest so it cold be attractive.

They do the same in Honduras, Nicaragua and Marshall
Islands.  That is their way to issue calls. I will not argue
with
those countries or the FCC if tomorrow they issue WNA to Ron
ex WN3VAW. or NJ to the NJDXA .
But, in Panama the local law indicates how the call signs will
be issued.  Plus  -- Article 15 indicates that special
calls (i.e HO1A- H81A, 3E1A,·3F1A,etc) will be issued ONLY to
CLUBS and RADIO ORGANIZATONS.
I am licensed since 1957 and CAN NOT request a special CALL
Like HP1A or HO1A or H81A for my use in any
activity.  I am a Panamanian citizen , born here in
Panama in 1939.
Do you beleive that I can go to NEW JERSEY and ask FCC to
issue me WA for the next contest
