Well, a power failure is only one cause of lost QSO's.
As I learned a few weeks ago, Bill Gates' infernal device will do it too,
when it downloads a 'patch' and reboots twice during the night, over writing
the temporary file that holds your 'automatically saved' Q's that you forgot
to actually (Alt-S) save.
Thus I have gotten into the habit of doing Alt-S after each completed
contact. Not viable for contesting, but acceptable for DXing. That's why I
suggested the programmable key method.
Seems like a patch is in order, but does not seem to be in the queue.

Why automatically download patches? I let my computer to advice me that
there is a new patch, and I decide when to download and install it (after
saving everything). I like to have control over my machine, not be
controlled by it ;)

My 2 cents is that an overall better solution is to keep your
computer on a small interruptible power supply (UPS). You don't
need one that will last that long (5 or 10 minutes is fine), and
there are plenty of small ones available from companies like APC
 (www.apc.com
 ), Belkin (www.belkin.com) and Ultra (www.ultraproducts.com) for
well under $100. (I personally have at least one from each of
those companies at home, with a somewhat larger Ultra that powers
a couple of computers, most of my network gear, and a few other
 things.)

The advantage of this is that in the event of a power outage, you
will not only have the time to save the QSO, but you can also shut
your computer down in an orderly fashion. Many of these products
will connect to your computer and will shut it down after a
specified set of conditions are met (e.g., backup battery has been
running and has 'x'% power left, etc.), meaning that even if
you're not there, your computer will still shut down properly.

Even with a system that writes to disk upon save, there is still a
small window where a QSO could be lost, although I can understand
the frustration at loosing any data for any reason.

As for your specific suggestion, there are utility programs that
will make a key sequence to any arbitrarily complex set of other
key sequences (and some will get a lot more complicated,
simulating mouse movement and mouse button clicks), though
 personally I don't use them so I can't give a recommendation.

 W5LT wrote:
I am not a computer wizard, but is it possible to program an
 unused function
key (say F12) to execute: enter alt s sequence ??
That way you could enter QSO (from a spot) and write to disk with
 one
 button.
That would be a neat solution. Just a thought.

Kosova and Adding New Countries to DXCC

Feb 19, 2008 16:53 ET
Bill Moore, NC1L

Naturally there are many questions about the DXCC status of Kosova, and whether
or not it will be added to the DXCC list.

The DXCC rules, which were modified in 2000 to better handle inclusion to DXCC,
are clear on how additions can be made:

For inclusion in the DXCC List, conditions as set out below must be met.
Listing is not contingent upon whether operation has occurred or will occur,
but only upon the qualifications of the Entity.

Political Entities, Geographical Entities, Special Areas

#1, Political Entities is the category with which we are concerned with respect
to Kosova.

1. Political Entities:

Political Entities are those areas which are separated by reason of government
or political division. They generally contain an indigenous population which is
not predominantly composed of military or scientific personnel.

An Entity will be added to the DXCC List as a Political Entity if it meets one
or more of the following criteria:

a) The entity is a UN Member State.

b) The entity has been assigned a callsign prefix bloc by the ITU. (The
exceptions to this rule are international organizations, such as the UN and
ICAO. These Entities are classified under Special Areas, 3.a); and Ineligible
Areas, 4.b).) A provisional prefix bloc assignment may be made by the Secretary
General of ITU. Should such provisional assignments not be ratified later by
the full ITU, the Entity will be removed from the DXCC List.

c) The Entity contains a permanent population, is administered by a local
government, and is located at least 800 km from its parent. To satisfy the
permanent population and administered by a local government criteria of
this sub-section, an Entity must be listed on either (a) the U.S. Department of
State's list of Dependencies and Areas of Special Sovereignty as having a
local Administrative Center, or (b) the United Nations list of
Non-Self-Governing Territories.

New Entities satisfying one or more of the conditions above will be added to
the DXCC List by administrative action as of their Event Date.

So, Kosovo will be added to the DXCC list if it becomes a member of the UN, or
(2), if it receives a prefix bloc from the ITU. The third condition does not
apply. The date upon which either (1) or (2) occurs will be the event date.

 added to
the DXCC List by administrative action as of their Event Date.

So, Kosovo will be added to the DXCC list if it becomes a member of the
 UN, or
(2), if it receives a prefix bloc from the ITU. The third condition does
 not
apply. The date upon which either (1) or (2) occurs will be the event
 date.

 Tnx Art for your reply,
Yes, but if you look at the Feburary list DXCC on web they say as of
Feb 19 there were 337 current.
My question is when will it say 338?

After the 2007 Honor Roll listings are posted in QST. They didn't want
to mess up the Honor Roll by including FJ, since most would not have
received QSLs in time.

Subject: [Dx4win] Telnet
Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If I sign on to any DXCluster via telnet wsing Windows XP I can stay
connected
for hours, days... If I use DX4WIN I'm lucky to stay connected 3 minutes. Is
there a timeout I can't find in DX4WIN that is causing this?? Thanks...
