Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater v. 9.0 released
Thanks Jim, Works great. DX4WIN 8.05 Running XP Pro SP 3 73, Art W6KYw6ky.com . From: Jim Reisert AD1CTo: DX4WIN Reflector Sent: Monday, January 23, 2017 7:37 AM Subject: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater v. 9.0 released I have released version 9.0 of the DX4WIN Data Updater: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/ This is a complete re-write to make the program faster and smaller. It should have the same "look and feel" as version 8.05. NPOTA has been removed from the Calendar and Membership Lists. Please read the updated documentation on the web site, as well as report anything you find which is incorrect or unclear. The best way to update is to un-install the version you have, through the Windows Control Panel. Then download and install the new version from this link: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/index.html#history Make sure to also download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable library from the link in the "Quick Start" section: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/index.html#quick_start Saved settings for the previous version will not be transferred to this new version, so write down anything you think you might forget. This includes the Calendar, Master Callsign and Membership List settings. Note that version 9.0 will always check for a new version on start-up. There is no longer an update check box for the Updater itself. Because this was a complete re-write, bugs are likely, and I am happy to find and fix them. Please pay special attention to these areas: * Windows XP * Proxy server (completely untested) * Update/error counts correct * Any error pop-ups? * Any numerical errors reported? * Disabling of background windows when foreground window is active * Settings saved and restored properly * Cancel/OK in sub-menus * Moving stuff around on the screen * Help/About while program running * DX4WIN already running * All available ways to close any window/pop-up * Do already-updated files try to update each time (i.e. time stamping)? * Check time zones east of Greenwich * Maintain “top” node when updating KCP/TCP (even if no longer active etc.) * Membership list error conditions Let me know if anything works incorrectly and I'll try to fix the problems as soon as possible. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I haven't been able to find answers to my questions using the HELP services in DX4WIN. The ability of DX4WIN to export my logs to LoTW and for LoTW to send a report of successful matches back to DX4WIN is wonderful. It is not clear to me, though, if DX4WIN also communicates with the DXCC desk at the ARRL with regard to paper QSL cards that have been checked, submitted, and approved. Does DX4WIN have this ability as well? What about the meanings of the letters W, L, M, C, S, and the asterisk( "*") in the DXCC Listing report? The "W" (for station worked) seems clear enough. The letter "L" seems to mean that I put a "Y" in the box under "Label" in the QSO window, asking DX4WIN to mark a QSO so that a label can be printed later. Does the "L" mean anything else? The DX4WIN instructions say that the letter "M" means I mailed a QSL card for a contact I made. What is the "trigger" in DX4WIN that causes an "M" to appear? Is it that I have entered a date in the "QSL Date" boxes? Not that I have put a "Y" indicating I want to create a label? Am I right that the "M" has to do only with my outgoing paper QSL cards? The DX4WIN instructions say that a "C" means a QSO has been confirmed. Confirmed by whom? Is this because LoTW found a match to my QSO? Or is it because the DXCC desk knows I have a valid paper QSL card for the QSO and tells DX4WIN about it? Or is it because I have received a paper QSL card and I have entered a "Y" in the "Cnfm" box? Does an "S" (for submitted) mean that I have exported a QSO to the LoTW program but a match was not found at the time of export? If the other operator exports his or her logs to LoTW after my submission, does LoTW remember that I am still looking for a match? Or do I have reset the upload flag and clear the date of the original export in order to try again for a match? Does the "S" also signify that I have submitted a valid paper QSL card to the DXCC desk at ARRL? Finally, the asterisk ("*") is said to mean that the QSO has been approved for the award. Approved by LoTW (because LoTW found a match)? Approved by the DXCC desk at ARRL (because I submitted a valid paper QSL card?) Or does the asterisk mean simply that a matched (or Confirmed?) QSO meets the rules of the DXCC award program? Does the asterisk have anything to do with paper QSL cards that have been checked and submitted to the DXCC desk? I look forward to some help. 73 de Ed, AA9OZ __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I wonder why ? 73 John 5Β4ΑΗΚ I just noticed an unusual problem while importing LotW QSOs into the log. When a Russian station has its Oblast set in the LotW QSO details that matches an abbreviation of a US state, the state flag for that particular QSO in DX4Win gets changed from blank to the state matching the abbreviation and, in addition, the zone of the station changes to the zone matching the state. This is something that changed in LoTW in the last 6 months or so. After every import, I always search for Import: in the Notes for this QSO field. If I run across the situation described above, I simply erase the State field in the QSO (and save it using F10) and all returns to normal. Re: [Dx4win] Status
Hi Paul, About 20 years ago several of us in the Southern Calif Contest Club and the San Diego DX Club discovered DX4WIN. All of us had some rinky dink DOS programs we were using and changing weekly. We all jumped on board and it was magic! It still is! N6ND(SK) led the charge. Personally I like a few extra steps to do certain functions in DX4WIN. Has saved my butt many times as I get right to the point of saving and realize how screwed up I have things.. Automatic, there is no back out.. I am 71 and it actually helps to think about what I am doing... Daily updates, bring up the program, what the hell is this??? It either doesn't work anymore or you don't recognize what you are looking at. Example: N1MM. Love the program, but they used to upgrade it several times per week. My only request, as I have grown to love digital, is better PSK(multiple decodes)and add JT-65 and JT-9... So, after 20+ years, several upgrades (all good) I am not 'hanging in there'. I am extremely pleased and will use DX4WIN till I go SK. If you go into the Windows Device Manager, and click on the '+' sign next to Ports (COM LPT) you will see the port assignments. You may be able to right-click on one of your virtual ports (like COM7) and assign it to a different number. But if the radio works OK on COM7, why not leave it that way? Remember, you can only have ONE port assigned to a given number. I don't have any advice to determine what application is trying to access COM3 besides DX4WIN. Go through all the DX4WIN preference tabs, and make sure that all devices are using a unique COM port #. If you had created virtual COM ports because you are using a USB-to-serial cable (or a RigBlaster, microHAM, etc. device), try deleting all the virtual COM ports, then reboot, then create only the ones you need. __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] 'New' Log for second callsign
I have several logs in DX4WIN. It's so easy Under file, Click on 'new'. Enter one QSO. Save the 'new' log using 'Save AS' and assign it that callsign. A new .DXL file will be created as that call. Enter the rest of your Q's saving as you go. Don't forget to go back to your present call using the Open command under file. I have my standard DX4WIN W6KY.DXL Club call KK6XN.DXL and Novice log from the 50's as KN0OQA and K0OQA.DXL's Whenever I need to add WPX Q's (that rare KK6) tomy KK6XN log, I open up KK6XN.DXL and import. Then go back to my standard W6KY log. To me, using Group numbers to mix logs together just makes things difficult to manage. I only use Group numbers to identify contest. Re: [Dx4win] LotW Backlog continues to grow ...
Agreed. Signing up for multiple portable operations is no big deal. But, each non-USA station must send a copy of his/her operating license plus a copy of a government issued ID such as drivers license, passport to this place in Newington. If I asked my local commissar in Blockavia if I should do this, he would probably have me locked up for being so stupid... I am certainly not going to send copies of my drivers license / passport to a foreign country, thru the 'mail' to get an award with the certainty my ID will be stolen... So,I don't think it's lazy, just common sense... It's bad enough sending Green Stamps that never arrive... 73, Art W6KY www.w6ky.com From: Joe Subich, W4TV li...@subich.com To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Mon, December 10, 2012 5:19:13 PM Subject: Re: [Dx4win] LotW Backlog continues to grow ... and the difficulty of signing up their multiple portable operations. There is absolutely no issue of singing a portable operation once you have the initial certificate. It takes less than one business day unless the operation is from a location that has specific access and licensing requirements. Even then, it's no more difficult than sending the same documentation to ARRL that would be needed to be accepted for DXCC (typically copy of license and landing permit). Anyone who complains about the sign-up process is too lazy to send copies of license and ID (equivalent to ham ticket and drivers license) with a valid mailing address and wait for the password to be mailed to the address on the ID. In many cases the process can be short circuited by providing the documentation in person at one of the many international conventions ARRL/DXCC/LotW staff attend on a regular basis. 73, ... [Dx4win] Logging JT65
Maybe it's just me, but I have 100,000 plus QSO's and they are all 599 or 59. Once the Q is over, I don't care anymore. Too many variables for it to matter. If a JT65 Q is in my log, that means I had to make it to 73, CUL, etc before I hit the Log button. The signal reports import to the notes in case I would ever need them. I can have a QSO at -24db and another at -2db. Both solid. Sig report didn't matter. To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 4fb3e0da.30...@gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Previously I asked for a slight modification to the 599 signal report in DX4WIN for JT65 users. In JT65, the signal report is the signal-to-noise ratio in dB. Actually it is the signal/(signal+noise) ratio, so the value is ALWAYS negative. S/N = -10 dB is a strong signal, S/N=-25 dB is weak. The requested change is that the field allow a minus (-) sign, with a format -nn in addition to the implicit positive number. In addition to the sign, the numeric range needs to be widened; RST=00-10 is rejected, while RST=11 and higher passes the test. Has anything happened on my earlier request? Is there any hope for us JT65 users other than sticking signal reports into notes fields? Are there any other JT65 users that are similarly frustrated? 73 de Tom K3IO (ex W3IWI) -- Message: 2 Date: Wed, 16 May 2012 16:09:42 -0400 From: Pete Smith N4ZR n...@contesting.com Subject: Re: [Dx4win] PCIe LPT port problem To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 4fb40986.6060...@contesting.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed I think their tech guy may have been blowing smoke, Paul(s) - I have a StarTech PEX1P PCIe Parallel Adapter Card - 1 Port, SPP, EPP, ECP (S262-8032) that I just got from Tigerdirect for a new Win7 PC. While I haven't tried to use it with the antenna switching control side of DX4WIN, it works fine doing the same job for N1MM Logger, which also needs to know the port address. If your new machine is a 64-bit Win 7 machine, as even nearly the cheapest Dells may be now, then you may need a different port driver. [Dx4win] Duplicate QSO's - Import Crashes
There are times when there will be duplicate QSO's while importing, such as a state QSO party when a station is sitting on a county line. That station is entered twice to pick up each county mult. But when importing to DX4WIN, the import crashes due to 'duplicate QSOs', which they are not. Question: Why does DX4WIN stop an import due to a dupe? There should just be a question at that time. Continue with Import? This causes so much trouble as the 'dupes' have to be taken out of the ADIF file and then re-entered into DX4WIN manually. And they aren't even dupes...
