[Dx4win] DX4Win on Windows Vista

2007-02-14 Thread Tony Lord
Craig,

I have been watching this thread from afar, many thanks for taking it to
final conclusion!

I would be interested to hear from other people about LPT ports and COM
ports. I am aware Vista does not support these ports only USB. So my
question is, if one uses a USB CI-V cable (for example), then the software
supplied produces a virtual Com port even though it is connected via a USB
port. Will Vista accept this???

Roger et al,

Thanks for the tip on right clicking on the DX4Win icon... A little further
amplification on this technique follows.

If you right-click on the DX4Win shortcut icon, a context menu will pop up.
Select the last choice on the list, Properties. In the window that opens,
click on the Compatibility tab at the top, then click the check box
labeled Run this program in compatibility mode for:. Now select Windows
XP (Service Pack 2), if it is not already selected, in the drop-down list.
Finally, at the bottom of the dialog box, check Run this program as an
administrator. You can also click the Show settings for all users button
and make these changes for whomever may be logged onto the PC. Click OK
and you're done.

If you have more than one shortcut to start DX4Win, you will have to apply
this change to each of them.

After doing this, DX4Win does run under Vista, although you will get a
warning message from Windows each time you run it. I cannot comment on the
availability of the LPT port, since I have never used that port for ham
radio purposes, and my new Dell computer has no LPT nor COM ports.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this discussion. It has been
very illuminating!

 Paul,

I have tried something else with more success. Before when I tried to run
DX4WIN I was running as an administrator. I was running from my usual
account that has administrator privileges. I now find that when logged in
to this same account and if I right click on the DX4WIN icon on my desktop
and click on Run as administrator the program runs. So far I can't get
it
to talk to my radio but the database portion seems to work OK. I'm using a
regular serial port that works fine with Ham Radio Deluxe. I'll keep
trying.

[Dx4win] DX4Win on Windows Vista

2007-02-14 Thread K0CF
Tony,

Thanks for your comments. Yes, Vista will work with virtual COM ports
created by a USB-to-COM port dongle. I have an IOGear USB-to-COM port
adapter that works for rig control and CW keying through my RIGblaster Pro.
It shows up as COM4 in my Vista computer. I have just concluded testing that
setup, and it works just fine -- and the CW sounds good. It works with
WriteLog, too.

I do have on order the new USInterface Navigator interface unit, which uses
a single USB 2.0 port for everything -- external sound card, rig control,
FSK keying, CW keying (with a built-in K1EL WinKey 2), plus provides an
extra COM port for a TU (or whatever), and an extra CI-V rig control port.
Can't wait for it to arrive so I can get back on RTTY.

Again, thanks to all for a great discussion!

Corrected txt

Hi Tony,

USB2SERIAL is not a big deal I use those from Gembird and every PIN is
working correct for Radio-CW-PTT-FSK.

USB2LPT is something else.
For the record I ordered 2 REAL USB2LPT converters that can access all 20
pins from a LPT port (I now there are 25 but gnd is used many times hi).
(If it works here I will post the link, btw he is not interested in making
A lot of them and he said by phone that I have to take care of it)
With a special driver for it, from the comments I read all is working OK
under XP, so next step here will be a test computer with VISTA to check.

USB2LPT can maybe solves the problem for DX4WIN that's why
One will be sended to PAUL directly when they arrive

2007-02-13 Thread K0CF
Has anyone succeeded in making DX4Win run on Windows Vista?

I found the reference to vichw11.sys in the archives and have successfully
copied it to the Windows\System32\drivers folder, but DX4Win still complains
about its absence, then terminates. Apparently this driver is not compatible
with Vista.

I am getting a bit desperate -- this has put me off the air for now, and I
can't bear the thought of moving away from DX4Win. I have tried demo
versions of a number of other logging programs, and they all run fine under
Vista, but they are not in any way the equal of DX4Win.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Yes, that is correct. I know of no work-around. I hope Paul will address
this, it also affects people running (or who want to run) Windows XP 64.

I'm normally an early adopter, but I'm sticking with Windows XP for the
foreseeable future. I see no compelling reason to upgrade to Vista. If Vista
comes pre-installed, well that's a different story

Jim,

Thanks for your comments. Your last sentence is, of course, the key.
Vista came pre-installed on my new Dell XPS-410 PC. XP is no longer
available from Dell.

And here I sit, broken hearted...

2007-02-13 Thread Jeff Steinkamp
I do not recommend anyone who wants to use much of the ham radio software that
is
available today to upgrade to Vista.

I had to purchase the XYL a new computer and as it turned out, Jan 30, 2007 was
the first release day for Vista. In fact you could not find any computer on
the
shelves with XP or 2K on them.

Vista is running fine for what the XYL does, but we have had a number of
difficulties. DX4Win doe not run correctly. No problem, she can use my XP
machine if propagation ever improves and we can run a few contest.

Many of the ActiveX components and Windows DLL that were developed with early C
compilers probably will not function or function erratically.

Software that accesses the internet will also have problems depending on how
you
have the firewall and User Control setup.

It is also interesting to note that out of the box, it downloaded about 100
Microsoft security updates once I got the firewall in Windows and MacAfee to
behave properly.

This is really a shot in the dark, but in Googling for references

Pete,

Thanks for the suggestions. The second file that was in dx4w702\drivers
is actually vichw11.vxd, and it was NOT in the System32\drivers folder.
Unfortunately, copying it there did not help. (Both of these driver
files are in the dx4w702\drivers folder. The error message from
DX4Win directed me to copy just the .sys file to the Windows drivers
folder, but both have been copied.)

Paul, are you listening? Please help us out here!

Not everyone has a licensed copy of Windows XP that can be installed. Say he
gave the old computer to another family member.

The reason to migrate to x64 or Vista can be many but up to each and
everyone.

Generally is progress dificult to stop. I remeber the same discusions when
Win95 came.

For med came the difference when I started the PC with x64 for the first
time. Took less than 1/4 of the time just to boot. (clean install compared
to clean install). Then it only got better,

A main reason is also that my hardware is 64bit and to run it in
emulatormode WOW or what it is called is not apeeling.

DX4Win is the only soft that not work in x64 for me.
