Unfortunately I have few friends who care about computer use or anything they use on them (they're all the kind who could care less, just so it works, and of course they're all M$ users too), so I never was able to install and use Ekiga, though I sure wish I could. Presently, if there's any cost whatsoever involved, I'm unable to use it as I've fallen on hard times and barely able to keep a roof over my head much less spend a few dollars on something for software use. Hopefully though that Retroshare thing may help. Let us know if you do at least try it...though I suppose it'd be a bit rude here on the Ekiga list (my apologies to the Ekiga owners/makers!). Hi, I put at http://eugen.dedu.free.fr/m.exe the latest ekiga (post 4.0.1) with a modification done between 4.0.0 and 4.0.1 removed. This is the only modification I see which could generate the problem you describe. Test it and tell if it gives the same results as 4.0.0 or not. I understand that it is annoying, but adding a checkbox means adding it to configuration files too, allow users to uncheck it, take into account users who forgot this, or worse users who change network (work-home) and where parameters are different etc. So we need to think a bit about that before implementing anything. The echo and call back tests always did work with 4.0.0 and never work now with 4.0.1 (an actual call to someone else was performed only once and did work with problems discussed in the thread Ekiga test today). Too bad you didn't ask me for this log before I got rid of 4.0.0 :) To roll back the version (under Win), should I do an uninstall of the newer version first? Re: [Ekiga-list] Newbie questions
Just reinstalled 4.0.0 as requested and ran the debug. At start up Ekiga behaved as after the original install of 4.0.0: no yellow triangle exclamation warning saying: Could not register to Ekiga.net in the system tray. But things went differently during tests . During the echo test could hear myself but this time there was no video of myself (just a bouncing ball). And during a call back test, I got a call back but then the program hung every time (no audio or video). The only change to the system I can think off, after the original install of Ekiga 4.0.0, was the installation of Skype. http://www.adrive.com/public/v2mpP8/ekiga-stderr.400.7z On 2/24/2013 1:17 PM, Eugen Dedu wrote: Just installing 4.0.0 is sufficient. Audio: During the tests there was a lot of echo even after I enabled echo cancellation in preferences. What can I do to improve the sound? Echo cancellation is not high quality. Buy a headset. 4. Use fullscreen in View menu during conversation. -- Eugen ___ ekiga-list mailing list ekiga-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/ekiga-list

[Ekiga-list] Newbie - Your credit is too low to complete this call
Hi, I'm trying Ekiga for the first time, v3.01 on Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 6. I got my SIP account (enter...@ekiga.net) and I went through the configuration druid with no problems. I did not get the broadcard.com dialout account. When I try the echo test (sip:5...@ekiga.net), I hear Your credit is too low to complete this call. Please buy credit and try again. I've looked through the Ekiga Wiki, did some Google searching (including the mail list archives), but didn't find this mentioned. I see many statements that an Ekiga.net account is free. Has that changed? Do I need a dialout account even for the echo test? Or is something else wrong, that is causing this message? Thanks for any suggestions. You mention above that you did not get a broadcard.com dialup account. Is there a typo there? Why do you mention this service? I did a search on ekiga.net (from Addressbook) for an account of yours and it shows your sip address is sip:tom.enterl...@ekiga.net instead of 'enter...@ekiga.net'. If you get a 'You credit is low' message when calling 5...@ekiga.net, something is wrong and you end up calling a dialout account instead of ekiga. Please forgive me if the info is posted someplace and I have missed it, and point me to the location where it is documented. I am new to both linux and Ekiga. I have seen many references to editing the gconf file. Where is this file located? And am I correct that the gconf-editor is called from the command line? Re: [Ekiga-list] Newbie, help: Account mgmt problems
I've isolated the problem. In a fresh install, right after the configuration wizard, clear the Authentication User field for the Ekiga account. After this an exit + restart corrupts the Ekiga account data. Trying to sort things out, I ran ekiga under valgrind. There is a lot of Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s); I presume these are irrelevant. Besides these, Ekiga runs clean when the Authentication User field is non-empty. However, the following two errors occurs iff the Authentication User field is empty i. e., when the data corruption occurs. Thanks for your reply! As for the data corruption issues, this seems to happen iff I leave the field Authentication User blank in the Edit Account dialog. If I fill this (with same vale as User) data is not corrupted and Ekiga runs fine. So, I don't have any blocking errors for the time being. But the presence stuff still seems a little odd e. g., Ekiga displays an account as Registered despite a login failure. I've started a thread on Fedora Forum to see if there are Fedora users having similar problems. No luck so far. I'll try your recipe, and look a little more into this. [Ekiga-list] Newbie, help: Account mgmt problems
I have a setup with four SIP providers, the last most used. Once configured, everything works OK. But if I exit Ekiga, and later restart it, the account data for my last account is corrupted: The password has became Authentication user, the timeout is some random value. In this situation my client obviously can connect to the sip provider, I can verify this on the server side. However, the Accounts window still presents the account as Registered. If I rectify the data it works again. However, if I invoke the Edit dialog for this account and closes it without changing anything (data OK) the account becomes Unregistered. Invoking Edit Account again, closing with same data restores the account to Registered In short, a mess. Has anyone out there a clue to what's going on? --alec ___ ekiga-list mailing list ekiga-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/ekiga-list

[Ekiga-list] Newbie configuration experiences...
First of all: I actually got Ekiga 3.0.1 running to the point of a working call to the echo service on my Fedora 10 box which is a Good Thing. You are doing a great job! However, being a newbie I found it a little harder than it ought to be. If it's an objective that Ekiga should be easy to setup, here are some remarks: Sound device selection. - There is no support for testing the output devices (Play test sound) for output nor ringing device in the device selection menu. I think it should. - On my Fedora box, some selections makes Ekiga really weird e. g., it's possible to connect but not to disconnect. The bad thing is that there is no user feedback indicating that this is a problem with the sound devices, which makes it hard to figure out what's going on. NAT traversal and router setup: - My router is a NAT router with the dreaded Symmetric NAT. There *is* an error message when Ekiga is started which basically says that I have to configure the router manually. The crucial term Symmetric NAT is *not* mentioned in this message. I finally learned to start ekiga with debug output, and grep for 'stun' to reveal this fact. This should really easier, the information about Symmetric NAT should be displayed to the user. - Once I understood that my router was doing Symmetric NAT I configured port forwarding according to the docs (dynamic, triggered ports is not properly handled by my Thomson router). I came to a point with working connect/disconnect but no sound. - After some more reading, I understood that the stunnel stuff was in the way. So I needed to disable stunnel. There are no switches in the UI for this, and even in gconf there is no Use stunnel option. What I did was to set the stunnel host to a non-existing value. This created a lot of error messages, and a working Ekiga... This should be easier and more straightforward IMHO. The issue to setup Ekiga with a router doing symmetric NAT couldn't really be out of the box, I understand that. But I still think this process could be easier with better error messages and configuration options. Or, maybe, a Symmetric NAT wizard? Last but not least, I shouldn't have taken the time to write this unless I really appreciate what you are doing... --Alec ___ ekiga-list mailing list ekiga-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/ekiga-list

This is nice, but also creates a strange feeling about this router.. is there anything else it forwards without letting me know? The behavior is normal. It is actually a perfect router. NAT is something bad, as it rewrites the packets. The problem with NAT is that some protocols (like SIP) require you to change the private IP address inside the SIP packet. A good NAT implementation should be able to do it for most common protocols. Most NAT implementations can deal with FTP transparently for you. Unfortunately, until recently, that was not the case with SIP and you needed workarounds like STUN or port forwarding. But recently, more and more routers started to have a NAT implementation that supports SIP. In that case, no port forwarding, no STUN are required. That is the perfect situation. Please note that it only forwards RTP ports because it knows that is a connection you established yourself. It is able to understand what happens. -- _ Damien Sandras (o- //\Ekiga Softphone : http://www.ekiga.org/ v_/_ Be IP : http://www.beip.be/ FOSDEM : http://www.fosdem.org/ SIP Phone : sip:dsand...@ekiga.net ___ ekiga-list mailing list ekiga-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/ekiga-list

What it's doing when I press the 'Detect' button I have no idea. Where should I start with all this? I'm also curious about how Ekiga gets on with videotelephony to Mac users. [Ekiga-list] newbie issues...
Hi, I'm trying to setup Ekiga 2.0.3 (as shipped with Debian/Etch), for VOIP and video conferencing. I'm having a bit of trouble with each. for VOIP I'm using sip through the institute gateway device which is some cisco product I don't control. Incoming calls work fine. Out going calls show weird behavior. If the call isn't answered on the first ring I get an abnormal call termination, if the call is answered on the first ring the call will work for a short but nondeterministic time and then end in the same bad way. Using an different soft phone (twinkle) out bound calls work fine. Looking at tcp dumps of the connections in both cases I see significan RTP traffic from the MIT sip server, with twinke there's also RTP traffic from my host back while ekiga is silent. Any clue what's up with that? For video conferencing I'm using h.323 to an old Vtel system for testing. Video quality is relatively poor (compated to teh Vtel system) no mater how fancy a camera I connect. I think this is ddue to the Maximum video bandwidth setting which is maxed at 100kB/s where as the Vtel system will go upto 768. Can this be raised?
