[Elecraft] K2 Alignment & Test, Part II PLL problem, Continued

2006-04-07 Thread rootboy
Just an update:

Following the advice that I had found on this list, I desoldered the crystal
and checked for solder balls. It was clean.

I also checked the voltage on pin 5 of U6 and it was 4 volts.

I looked at the thermistor board and it looked good.

I watched the signal using a scope and with the radio setup for the "CAL FCTR"
test,
I had a reading of ~400hz and nothing but noise on TP3.

Once I pressed the "BAND - " button, I got the expected 12,090hz signal and a
reasonably pretty sine wave on TP3.

Pressing the "BAND +" or turning the tuning knob would send it back to ~400hz
and the signal would revert to noise.

Any thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] Skunks and Antennas (WAS:] WA3WSJ's EPA Skunk Works Site - Check it out!)

2006-04-07 Thread Walt Armour
Well, I'm in Beaverton so try to keep the big cats out west. I'll just
watch for the local raccoons here. :)

On the antenna though, I don't think the tree is feasible due to
location. The ridge line (on some poles for a touch more height) is
quite doable and could easily feed into where my radio will one day be.
However, I'm a little concerned about the signal going too vertical and
having a bad angle on the horizon.

Should I be considering a vertical antenna if I really want to DX?

New guy here so please correct any bad assumptions I'm making...

[Elecraft] K1 assembly question

2006-04-07 Thread Wes Linscott
I'm building my new 4-band K1, I have completed the first section of the RF
board assembly, and am at the VFO alignment. However, the frequency is not
changing when the VFO knob is rotated. The troubleshooting guide suggests
possibly the varactor diodes have been installed backwards, but I don't
believe that is the case. The flat side of the varactors is towards the
front which is what the diagram shows. I have checked the pot itself with
an ohmmeter and it seems to be working ok. I would appreciate any
suggestions.

[Elecraft] Running Amok and Grounded Antennas (WAS: Re Cans and KPH)

Hey, how else can you get to use a neat word like "amok". It's as much fun
to say as it is to write...

Oh yeah, even 600 meters comes in from KPH here FB in the evenings, about
600 miles up the coast from their transmitters. For SWL's, the HF/LF bands
are great fun - lots of non-directional beacons all over the country to
'DX', etc., although the transmissions get even more boring that "reading
the mail" on contest exchanges . Folks who can monitor VLF can even get a
chance to listen for Grimedon's huge alternator transmitter from a century
ago - nothing more than a huge AC generator hooked to an antenna working on
17 kHz with a key in the antenna circuit. (That's one you don't want to bump
the contacts on with your hand...) It's in Sweden.

One work the world on 500 kHz even with QRP and a short antenna. I'm aware
of one instance of a hand-cranked lifeboat radio, running a couple of watts
into an electrically short antenna on 500 kHz in the Mediterranean Sea,
being heard half way around the world clearly enough to trigger a search in
the middle of the Pacific ocean.

As we've discussed many times here on the reflector, when using a short
antenna, the ground is EVERYTHING! And sitting in the middle of an ocean
filled with salt water is about as good as a ground can get...

Just two days ago the organization was issued an additional amateur
club station call sign K6KMI -- KMI was the now defunct and
cancelled AT&T High Seas Marine OIperator, whose receiving station
was the next-door neighbor to KPH/KSM (transmitters were at Dixon,
CA). Does that mean that they are trying to restore KMI as well

I amuse those who know what I am doing by using the following as a
beacon ID from my 2-meter packet stations (I have 2 channels up and
  running 24/7):

VVV VVV VVV DE K2ASP QSX THIS FREQ MAILBOX K2ASP DIRECT K2ASP-2

That has served to pique the interest of several young and not so
young "packeteers" who were not familiar with marine CW procedure.

>The site is in the Point Reyes National Seashore and they get a lot of
>visitors on weekends for whom they handle traffic on the ham bands.

They will also handle commercial traffic at no cost if it is going
to a station authorized to receive marine radiograms. They are on
the GGNRA using equipment which belongs to the GGNRA so they can't
  charge fees.

Last summer several of us received the "nickel grand tour" of both
the receiving station at Pt. Reyes and the transmitters as Bolinas,
mainly becaause we were fly-on-the-wall supporters of the MRHS on
technical and legal matters from the start and the operators at both
places were long-time friends and "day job" colleagues of ours.

I had the "honor" of originating the first unplanned commercial
message which was sent to the Jerimiah O'Brien (KXCH), their
restored WW-II Liberty ship in San Francisco harbor.

In essence it said: "PLEASE PREPARE YOUR LOGS AND RECORDS FOR
INSPECTION - /S/ PHILIP M. KANE" (I was the FCC's chief ship radio
inspector in SF for almost 30 years). The ship's reply, sent by the
ship's operator - the first female coast station operator at KPH -
was "OUR LOGS AND RECORDS ARE ALWAYS READY FOR INSPECTION, PHIL".

"A good time was had by all."

>There are still a few HF-equipped ships with proficient ops, and you'll
>occasionally hear KSM respond to them too.

The MRHS and its counterparts on all three coasts are working hard
to get the MF and HF marine stations onboard "museum" ships restored
to original condition. AFAIK this includes several WW-II era
Liberty and Victory ships, smaller vessels, and the "crown jewel",
the USS Massachusetts, as well as another coast station or two.

I urge any of the CW (or phone) ops here to visit these stations if
  they are in the area.

I am a contester. Not a good one, but I'm about to enter the JIDX a
bit. Lotsa QSL cards to follow in about a year and a half.

QSA is also the origin of the phrase, often heard on 75 in the evening
from some of the older hams, "Roger Tom, you're Q5 tonight."

Officially, QLB means, "I have monitored (on Kcs) and
report as follows ." Nearly all Q-signals are a
question-answer pair. QRX as a question means, "Will you call me
again?" As a statement it means, "I will call you again at
on Kcs." We hams have verb-ified, adjective-ified, and
noun-ified many of them. QRP as a question means, "Shall I decrease
power." As an answer, it means, "Decrease power." However, we readily
tell someone that "My KX1 is a QRP rig." There is an amusing note for
QRP (and QRO) that cautions "Refers to communications," as opposed, I
guess, to the throttle on the airplane (I think I know the class of
pilots who would need that guidance, but to name it would disclose an
unfounded personal bias). Strictly speaking, Q-signals have no place in
radiotelephone transmissions.

Another commercial practice you can use to confuse and annoy people in
the ham bands is the interrogatory prosign, INT (sent as one letter).
Since the Morse question mark duplicates the prosign IMI (which is used
a lot, especially if you're a member of SOC), you send di di dah dit dah
prior to the Q-signal (or sentence) to make it a question. You can get
an exhaustive list of all Q-signals at
. Some are fairly quaint.

I'm about 140 km from KPH, and in the afternoon, it has a huge field
strength here in the Sierra foothills. However, the LF sensitivity of
all my receivers with that coverage really sucks, the only untuned
antenna I have is my flag pole, so KPH is only about S7 or so on the
meters on 426 KCs.

Ron can probably hear KSM just fine on 6474 Kcs.

Actually, quite a bit of the original Skunk Works stayed at Burbank at least
into the late 70's and early 80's. A good friend of mine was an engineer
there and often had to make late night runs into work to supervise lifting
some exotic flight surface out of a jig. That's the extent of my knowledge
of his work. Any further questions were deflected with a statement about
band conditions or some such.

A-yep. Skunk Works(r) is a registered trademark of Lockheed-Martin
Corporation.

It began during WWII in Burbank, California but later moved to more "secure"
quarters. Anyone heard of "Groom Lake" or "Area 51"? That's them! (Or part
of them).

Still, many companies and organizations have called the location where their
'secret' new product development is going on the "company skunk works". As
in all of those still trying to figure out exactly where the Elecraft "skunk
works" are located...Hi!

-Original Message-

Hmmm ... be careful. Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin and not related to the
inventor of the Retro-Encabulator) may have a trademark registered on "Skunk
Works." It became fairly famous for secret airplanes such as the U2 and
F-117A.

And Kelly Johnson's other masterpiece, the SR-71 Blackbird.

A wire resonant vertical antenna doesn't exactly fit the image of the
cutting edge technology associated with the Skunk Works. Not to mention that
Lockheed Martin owns both the name and the skunk logo that EPA Skunk Works
has appropriated.

Hmmm ... be careful. Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin and not related to the
inventor of the Retro-Encabulator) may have a trademark registered on "Skunk

I skipped a few other less well publicized ones too, for obvious
reasons. The original Lockheed Skunk Works occupied Bldg 357 (a hangar)
at the Burbank CA Airport, and the engineering offices were in Bldg 90,
which you could see from I-5.

There is. It is in the Evergreen Aviation Museum across from the
airport not far out of town. It is parked under the wing of the Spruce
Goose, and looks like a model next to that monster, although by itself,
it is pretty big. Evergreen, with a base at the airport across the road
has an "interesting" history also. It's a great indoor aviation museum
if you like airplanes. I have a cool T-shirt from that visit.

The Spruce Goose is really made mostly out out of birch, but I guess
"Birch Goose" just didn't have the right ring to it. It was designed to
carry 600 or so troops across the Atlantic at the amazing speed of 110
kts ... and I thought the grind across the S. China Sea in C-130's at
250 kts was awful.

Fred, you are sounding like a Ham contester!!

For those who don't recognize QSA and QLB, QSA is the commercial radio
operators signal report (instead of the RST Hams use). I think it's far
preferable since it assumes a decent tone (T), and it's been a long time
since a normally-operating Ham rig produced anything but a perfect T-9 tone.

The QSA report ranges from QSA 1 to 5 with 1 as the weakest that can be
copied at all to 5 being very strong and perfect copy. QSA 0 is usually
referred to as simply "nil" - no copy.

I know Hams these days commonly send some arbitrary RST that has nothing to
do with the actual signal, or they are concerned that they'll offend another
station by sending anything less than 599, but real radio operators report
truthfully! So if you use QSA, report the actual signal as you hear it!

I'll often send a QSA report instead of an RST report on the Ham bands if
the other station sounds like a "Sparks" - they are usually easy to spot
running their bugs with the smoothness of a radio announcer's baritone voice
.

If someone wants to use QSA instead of RST, by all means do so. For those
who want to complete a QSO with the fewest possible characters, it is
shorter! Just don't fall into the Novice trap of sending a QSA greater than
5. Like Readability in RST, QSA runs only from 1 to 5.

Unfortunately, being 600 miles north of them, I must often report to KPH
that their 426 KHz signal is QSA 1 or Nil unless it's well after dark.

Oh, if someone's wondering about "QLB" it means, in this context, "Here's
your signal report...".

I was taught to keep the cans forward while working at a coastal marine
station during my senior year in HS (age 16). I thought then it was so
the op who was assigned to train me could more easily box me on the side
of my head when I made a mistake (which would be whenever I touched the
mill or key) without damaging the headphones. A few years later, most
of my hearing left me in a few milliseconds due to a big bang behind me.
Now, I put the well-padded cans directly over my ears and crank the AF
gain up to roar.

The MRHS at Ron's link recently received a coastal marine license (KSM -
first one issued in over 20 years or so), and can generally be found on
Saturday afternoons (2000Z - 2400Z) running their wheel on 6474 Kcs.
The also sometimes activate KPH on 426 Kcs sending press. They usually
guard 7050 and 14050 Kcs from the second operating position as K6KPH,
and they will QSL KSM/KPH reception reports on authentic radiogram forms
if you ask them to. If you want to play "commercial CW op" a typical
report might be:

K6KPH DE QLB KSM 6474 QSA 5/KPH 426 QSA 4 K

The site is in the Point Reyes National Seashore and they get a lot of
visitors on weekends for whom they handle traffic on the ham bands.
There are still a few HF-equipped ships with proficient ops, and you'll
occasionally hear KSM respond to them too.

My best worst antenna was a 6M dipole tacked to my bedroom wall, facing
the TV. With 50 watts of FM it hit the local repeater just great, and
only took a month to destroy my TV's receiver with overload.

My runner-up best worst antenna was my indoor mini trapped 10M vertical

Hey Guys!

I really like the story about this antenna being developed in the " EPA
Skunk Works - Area WSJ" !

Maybe this thing should be called the Ninja Antenna or the Skunk Works
Special? Yeah - "Skunk Works Special" has a nice sound doesn't it?

How about I let you guys name this antenna? It's a vertical antenna
designed to hang from a tree etc. It's made out of #26 teflon-coated
stranded red wire. You change bands by simply changing a loading coil
wound on red film canisters with female BNC connectors on each end. The
vertical plays very nicely on 40m, 30m and 20m and uses four ground
radials also red.

At present, on 15m and 10m you change the red vertical radiator wire and
clip on four 15/10m radials. The 10/15 arrangement may change. I might
build a matching network in a film canister for 15 and 10m? At present
the entire antenna weighs-in around 9oz excluding the 25' of coax to fed
it. It can be put into a small plastic baggie.

So what will be the name of this vertical? I'm open to all names -
let's hear YOUR suggestions!

Also send me any comments about what YOU would like to see designed into
this antenna.

I was asked to write an article about this little beauty, but I really
don't know who would want it?

I made the 1K to 10K resistor change on my K2's SSB board because I use a

get the VOX to work well. After the change, I really haven't noticed much

"Let's widen the question to make it KAF2 or KDSP2 or
NOTHING? Does the basic K2's crystal filtering work
well enough that you (any of you)would be happy with
no AF filtering or does the AF/DSP filtering add
enough that you wouldn't want to be without it?"

>From my perspective that's like asking "What would you
rather have a box end wrench, rachet wrench or your
fingers?" There is a place for all of those tools. If
you're an avid DXer and/or Contester, you might want
all of those options, at times.

The ability to handle signals under any number of
extreme conditions would be the deciding factor (or
perhaps how much money you want to spend on bells and
whistles). DSP & AF may not be of any real advantage
if you have, say 16 3 wavelength long beverages on
160M, or stacked 5 element yagis on 20. If you have a
simple low dipole on 80M, either or would offer you
easier copy, at times.

There are times during CW contests I like to run my
filters at 800 Hz or even 1.5kHz, because folks call
off frequency. But, if I'm trying to pull a weak
multiplier out in the middle of the low end of 20
during the ARRL DX Test, I probably will drop down to
200Hz plus and use the KAF.

Could I live without the KAF or DSP> Sure, I could...
But both serve a purpose depending on the specifics of
your station and operating activities. IMHO, both the
KAF and DSP offer the low band operator advantages
when working weak signals that make them both welcome
tools to have on hand.

Cheers,
Julius

Re: [Elecraft] KAF2, KDSP2 or BMF2

Perhaps a not so obvious feature, if it is true, is through the use of
either KAF2 or KDSP2 hams listen at a "safer" volume with less risk of
further hearing lost, by helping our brain by filtering out at least
some of the noise before the brain tries to decode the signal,
allowing comfortable listening at a lower volume because your brain is
not "working" as hard to separate out the signal from as much noise.

I don't know, I am just wondering if anyone agrees or disagrees with
that aspect of using additional "hearing aids".

Wearing the "cans" in front of one's ears as noted by Jim W4BQP has saved my
ears during almost 60 years of operating. As for audio filtering etc, in
another receiver I use a form of "stereo" audio circuitry, with low pass
filters in each channel to reduce noise, plus some other trickery. The
result is akin to being at a party with conversations being held in various
parts of the room, some from the left others from the right, some from the
front and others from behind. This really helps the brain to search out and
lock onto a particular person's chatter (the desired signal). Unfortunately
I have had better results using two product detectors rather than one with
audio phasing, to produce the two audio inputs, so such a system could be
difficult to add to the K2. But there is always the K3!

[Elecraft] K2 Alignment & Test, Part II PLL problem

2006-04-07 Thread rootboy
I just got my radio finished, and right off of the bat I got the same 300 -
400hz readings as Stephanie Maks did on hers.

I read through her messages and will follow the advice that was suggested
(tomorrow, it's almost 4am here), but I'd like to post what we observed in case
it isn't the crystal (and it looks like it isn't).

Firing up the K2 and going into "CAL FCTR" gives me a frequency of about 300 to
400 hz.
Pressing the BAND - pushbutton results in a frequency of 12083hz.
Pressing the BAND + gives me the 300 to 400hz reading again.

Looking at the signal with the scope shows noise at about the half volt level.

Taking readings with an ohmmeter showed good reading as far as I could tell.

Reading continuity across the crystal didn't show any shorts.

With the display was showing 12khz, the voltage reading at C100 read ~ .2 volts.
With the display was showing 300-400hz, the voltage reading at C100 read ~ 7.6
volts. (which seems a tad high).

I'll do the tests that have already been recommended here, but maybe this will
help someone zero in on what's going on with my rig.

Thanks,

John Waalkes

Actually I am not backpacking any more because of my knees but I do go to parks

MD I am using a 24 foot antenna with a 33 ft. counterpoise. I doubt that I
am going to use the internal batteries very much because I have a 7amphr sealed
battery that I plan to set on the picnic table!! The main reason I like Fort
McHenry is the KX1 and the K1 are free from any noise on the receivers. It is
such a relief from the S-8 noise that I have at home.

Let me know when you're coming up to the parkI live a mile or so
away

Maybe I can wangle my way aboard the submarine Torsk and fire up the K2 from
there.
