Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 10m SSB Distortion

2006-09-06 Thread Stewart Baker
Just a thought.
Do you have a KAT2 ATU in-circuit in the K2 when using the KPA100 ?

I had a problem with VRFDET voltages fighting each other causing distortion on
10m only, both on dummy load and antenna.

My solution is to disconnect the KAT2 when not using it.

I tested with dummy load and no difference! I took away kpa100 and running
qrp, it sounds very good on all band, even on 10m and more than 10 watts.
But with kpa100 and full output there is disdortion on 10m. I noted I have
made Grounding of mic jack and RF filter on input of compressor mods. No
 KI6WX mods.

If it's on one band, it's usually RF getting into the audio circuits on that
band, most commonly through the microphone connector.

One other thing that could be a factor with the K2 is that on 10 meters the
output is usually the lowest, so it's just possible that you're over-driving
the rig with audio on that band to make full output.

Are you using an external mic preamplifier? That's a common source of both
RF feedback into the audio and for enough audio to over-drive the rig.

Even if you have no audio preamplifier, the possibility of RF getting into
the mic is the first thing to check. The easiest way to do that is to switch
from your antenna to a good dummy load and compare your audio on a monitor
 receiver.

 Ron AC7AC

 Hello,

What is the problem? My ssb-transmit has distortion on 10m. The other bands
are ok. I have no mods on ksb2.

I knew this would stir things up a bit from the other side of the
pond.

Two final comments.

I did a search at the UK dti.gov.uk website, the issued ROHS
Directive and other linked sites, and NOWHERE could I find among the
numerous exemptions one saying that kit and homebrew equipment is (or
is proposed to be) exempt. If somebody can find a definitive
statement then please produce it.

Elecraft kits are now being produced with ROHS compliant parts, which
allows them to be imported into Europe under the new directive both
by individuals and other companies (Peter at QRPProject for
instance). Under the directive, unless otherwise exempt, the
directive dictates that such equipment MUST be assembled with lead
free solder.

Much as I detest lead free solder myself with all its problems and
that it is going to do absolutely nothing to reduce lead pollution,
that is how the directive at present stands. Those who use leaded
solder are breaking the directive by compromising the ROHS compliance
of the product.

Perhaps the next step will be for your ROHS compliant office to combine forces

I can envision a task force descending upon some unfortunate hamtesting his

Few days ago one problem occurred - before TX on 17m RX is OK, after TX on
this band RX dropping down. This is only on HI power range, on LOW
power range everything is OK.
When I change band to other then 17m and then come back to 17m RX stay
OK to the TX and then drop down again. When I Off then On K2 or push
TUNE key, RX come back to normal.
Is anyone know what is the problem?

[Elecraft] K2 and Amp in enclosure

2006-09-06 Thread Steven Pituch
Hi all,
I have decided to put my K2 and associated equipment in one large case for
easier deployment in emergencies. My friend Bill Albert AD5TD has done this
with an FT100 in an old camp stove enclosure. There is a rather poor photo
of it at:
http://www.kristv.com/Global/story.asp?s=5074978

My question is whether I need to space the equipment apart to prevent EMI.
I know you need to use the K2VCOSHLDKT mod kit if you want to place the K2
near an amp. I will probably stack the equipment with the K2 on the bottom,
The KPA100/KAT100 in the EC2 case above it, a Yaesu FT8100R on top of that,
and either an SEC1223, or Astron ss30 switching power supply on top of that.
I will be spacing the equipment for some ventilation and the rear side of
the case will be removable for additional ventilation during actual
operations. Right now I use a muffin fan on top of the KPA100 and will
probably permanently mount that on the amp. If anyone can offer any advice
it is appreciated.

I will probably build the box out of Luan plywood and fiberglass cloth.

Having everything assembled in the box will help keep things together during
a deployment and also make it easier to operate mobile without leaving
something at home.

Steve, W2MY/5

RE: [Elecraft] Problem with 17m band in K2 + KAT100/KPA100 in EC2

2006-09-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Marcin,

There is nothing in the KPA100 or the base K2 that would cause that problem
on 17 meters only.
In the base K2, the relay switching is shared for 17 and 15 meters except
for relay K6 in the bandpass filter, and in the KPA100, all circuits are
shared between 17 and 20 meters. You would have a problem on either 20
meters or 15 meters in addition to 17 meters if it was associated with
either the K2 or KPA100 switching relays.

If you have a dedicated 17 meter antenna, you may want to investigate the
switching to that antenna.

TUNE should behave the same as transmit, but you say that receive
sensitivity does not drop after TUNE - that is indeed strange. We need more
data.

Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 on 30/20/17/15 ?

2006-09-06 Thread Mike Morrow
David wrote:

I would like to setup a K1-4 for 30/20/17/15, which I believe would need an LPF
for 20 and 15). I believe I can do this with all of the parts that come with a
K1-4 except that I don't know if it includes an LPF for 20.

As supplied, the K1 with KFL1-4 covers 40m, 30m, and any two of the 20m, 17m,
or 15m bands. It does NOT cover ANY four of the 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m, 15m bands.
Actually, K1 product literature claims that the KFL1-4 coverage is 40m, 30m,
20m, and either 17m or 15m, but the KFL1-4 is actually a little more versatile
than that. I guess they thought no one would ever give up 20m coverage.

It has two LP filter sections in the transmitter output/receiver input signal
path.

One LP filter section is switched in by firmware for the two lowest bands (40m
and 30m), with a filter cutoff somewhere above 30m but below 20m, where the
second harmonics of 40m operation would appear.

The other transmitter LP filter section is switched in by firmware for the two
highest bands (any two of 20m, 17m, 15m), with a cutoff somewhere above 15m but
below 10m, where the second harmonics of 20m operation would occur.

Thus, as supplied, the KFL1-4 won't cover 30m, 20m, 17m, and 15m because you'd
be trying to put 30m and 20m signals through the same LP filter that cuts off
below 20m.

Additionally, it would be hard to juggle around the values of the fixed
capacitors in the pre-mix and the RF band-pass filters to accomodate 30m and
20m operation for the firmware-programmed bandswitching relay latching action
that takes place for 30m and 40m operation.

Of course, KFL1-4 firmware could be modified to select one LP filter section
for only one band (30m), while selecting the other LP filter section for the
other three bands (20m, 17m, 15m), but we don't have the option of altering the
KFL1-4 firmware.

Your combo is not impossible, but it would take some study, BP/LP filter
redesign, and additional parts (fixed capacitors). But be careful. The K1 has
the best spurious output specs of any Elecraft rig, and re-design could
sacrifice that spec.

IMHO, it would be best to choose a combo of bands that the KFL1-4 already
supports. Trading off 17m for 40m isn't much of a penalty. It gives you a
good night-time band any time of the year or solar cycle.

Anyway, I'm going to go check out 30m before all the Europeans go to
sleep...

RE: [Elecraft] Problem with 17m band in K2 + KAT100/KPA100 in EC2

2006-09-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

I am certain Marcin will be interested in your results when portable. The
only thing that I can think of is a bad connection in the KPA100 T-R switch,
but then I am just guessing. Marcins's problem continues until the KPA100
switches out at the 10 watt level, so your problem may be different.

 -Original Message-

 Don,

I am experiencing the same or a very similar problem as Marcin. It
only happens on 17M and only at high power. That is why we do not
see it after a Tune operation. If I turn the power down to 30W or
less, no problem. It makes no difference whether the KPA100 is the
top cover or remoted in an EC2 with the KAT100. I haven't determined
exactly how much power I have to be running before the problem
occurs. I suspect RF getting somewhere it shouldn't but have not had
the time to track it down. It does seem to be antenna dependent even
though I get a good match to the 102 foot doublet I use. I will get
a chance to test my theory next week when I take the K2/100 portable
for a week using a different antenna than I do at home. If it occurs
only at the home QTH then the problem is in the antenna system and
probably stray RF affecting something in the K2.

 Marcin,

There is nothing in the KPA100 or the base K2 that would cause
 that problem
 on 17 meters only.

 We need more
 data.

[Elecraft] Difference between real filters (FL1 thru FL4) and DSP filters (SF1 thru SF4)

2006-09-06 Thread John Wiener
I have been playing with the KDSP2 on my K2 and was wondering if the
DSP filters are significantly different in their effects than the
effects of filters FL1 thru FL4.

To me, they seem a bit redundant, in terms of audio effect on listening.

Noise reduction is remarkable when activated...still learning how to
use it for SSB, however.
I haven't seen the effects of the notch filter yet...is that supposed
to eliminate adjacent carriers?

[Elecraft] RE: Difference between real filters (FL1 thru FL4) and DSPfilters (SF1 thru SF4)

2006-09-06 Thread Steven Pituch
Hi John,
The DSP is audio. Its got a sharper cutoff but can be affected by the AGC
which is also audio. The crystals filters FL1 -FL4 are IF and closer to the
front end and cut interference before the AGC.

Yes, in non critical situations, the DSP filters are sharper, but if a loud
adjacent signal gets through the IF because a narrow IF filter is not being
used it will activate the AGC and desense the signal you are listening to.

The best thing to do is narrow it down first with the IF filters, and then
use the DSP narrow bandwidths if the IF filtering is not enough.

I have some samples of the bandwidths here.
http://users.ev1.net/~spituch/Steve's%20Page/Radio/RTTY/RTTY.html
By the way, using MixW to align the filters was very easy.

Regards,
Steve, W2mY/5

The K2 AGC is not audio AGC. It's derived from RF in a separate I.F. strip
dedicated to producing an AGC voltage based on the strength of the signal at
the I.F. and the AGC voltage controls the gain of the I.F. amplifier. The
AGC circuits are on the control board. NE602 mixer U1 converts the I.F.
signal to about 150 kHz. That way any BFO signal at 4.9 MHz can't get into
the AGC system. The output of the NE602 is rectified to produce the DC AGC
voltage that operates the S meter and which controls the gain of the
MC1350 I.F. amplifier (U12) on the RF board.

2006-09-06 Thread Fred Jensen
While a still wet behind the ears student several hundred years ago, a
professor told me that The best filters for any receiver are at the
antenna terminals, before any RF enters the receiver. Once you let it
in, it's hard to control. Unfortunately, filters are a bit hard to
implement that way, hence the superhetrodyne.

Re: [Elecraft] High current reading

2006-09-06 Thread Darrell Bellerive
I too see the occasional High Current reading at the beginning of a
transmission. Switching to the Voltage/Current display shows current well
under the current limit setting.

Looks like I am currently having problems with RF getting into my DC power
system. I suspect that this might be the cause of the High Current reading
blips.

[Elecraft] Power/ALC Metering Issues on K2

2006-09-06 Thread Mike Short
I have the KSB2 installed, and the audio, etc sounds great. The RF/ALC
metering is not right. When I select RF, there is no output. When I select
ALC metering, audio carrier, etc work fine. THere is no ALC indication of
any kind, no matter what. Any ideas?
