[Elecraft] that Drake or Collins sound
WØYK sed: [snip] The K3 simply sounds better on all modes, including RTTY. The band noise is less severe to listen to, and the difference is striking just having the ProIII in one ear and the K3 in the other with no signals in the passbands. Yet, the K3 dynamic range accepts a much larger range of signal levels and the K3 pre-amp can be left on even on the low bands where the attenuator does NOT need to be turned on except in severe situations. I ran with the pre-amp on, maximum sensitivity, and the attenuator off on all bands 10-80 for the entire NAQP. The K3 was less fatiguing to listen to for long periods of time with the audio sounding very natural, whereas the ProIII does sound digitized or artificial. (Maybe if you're not old enough to have spent many hours in front of a Drake or Collins receiver, you can't appreciate this point!) [end snip] This is GREAT news for me! While I don't do RTTY, I sure do CW. Over the years, I have listened multiple times on the 756 Pro series, and I must say that to my admittedly sensitive ear, I just can't stand that digital sound (very flutey, if there is such a word). From home, I can even hear it on the xmited signal. I can pick out an Icom radio a mile away. Not bad...just not like it should be. Normally, I HATE subjective opinions...but this one that really rings true. Re: [Elecraft] that Drake or Collins sound
I prefer the FT1000MP sound to the Pro3. It's more like my Drake TR7: a softer (shall I say) analogue sound. I get quickly fatigued with the Pro3 which I find harsh, rasping; though I do hear weaker stations, ie better for dx seeking than contesting. Looking forward to putting the K3 in an A/B test. Re: [Elecraft] RX~TX Pops above 11w with KPA installed.
Dave, I suspect you also have the KDSP2 installed. Try increasing the setting of T-R delay. Also EDIT the T-R parameter and push DISPLAY to toggle between 8R NOR and 8R HOLD - use the one that reduces the pop better. The situation is apparently caused by the delay through the KDSP2 which modifies the mute timing and causes a pop on unmute. There is some (yet undefined to me) influence from the KPA100 T/R switching. If you have an older KPA100 (before Nov 2006) adding the KPA100UPKT to your KPA100 may help. Why this appears on some K2 and not others is an additional mystery I have not yet figured out. 73, Don W3FPR David Walker wrote: Hi all, I've just noticed a pop between RX and TX with the KPA installed and the power above 11w. RE: [Elecraft] that Drake or Collins sound
Great news to me also. I am used to using the old gear, and all the new stuff I have ever used sounds noisy and harsh, the newer it is, the worse it gets. Not sure if it's the multi conversions or the cheap audio amps, but all the newer stuff was very noisy. Even the R390a had way more noise then many other radios. The K2 is fairly quiet, but it's a CW/SSB rig and the audio is restricted I suspect.. Sounds like the K3 is going to be fantastic. Thanks for the detailed review. Well, I suppose its not long now! One TO92 (not micro sized) and two 1/8W resistor (not micro sized) tacked across some connector pins. Easy, and takes about 10 min. Re: [Elecraft] KX-1 practice mode or dummy load?
The simplest way to use the KX1 as a code-practice oscillator is to hold the SPEED button down, which switches the rig to keyer-speed adjustment. The speed is displayed in WPM, and you can keep track that way of how fast you're sending. Of course it doesn't transmit in this mode. 73, Bruce Prior N7RR _ http://liveearth.msn.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K-2 Transmitted signal distorted (Hum)
Greg, It could be any number of things from having an AC transformer located too close to the K2 (especially on the left side - did you re-arrange the operating position?) to a bad solder connection somewhere. We need more detail to even get started. One thing you may want to check is RFC15 on the bottom of the RF Board. Check it with an ohmmeter to be certain it is not open. If you try to do it by measuring the voltage on each side of the choke, you will find 5 volts on both sides whether it is open or not. 73, Don W3FPR Greg Storms wrote: I have just started experiencing a tremendous distortion on my transmitted signal (K-2). [Elecraft] From the CQ-Contest Reflector
Date:Mon, 23 Jul 2007 12:26:51 -0700 From: Tree [EMAIL PROTECTED] Add to Address BookAdd to Address Book Add Mobile Alert To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:[CQ-Contest] Elecraft K3 - more impressions Made it back from KL7 over the weekend. I took my beta test K3 with me and we did a multi-single from KL3R in the IARU contest (with K6AW and KL7RA). This 8 pound box sure packs in a lot of performance. One option we suggested to Elecraft is a set of covers made out of lead - just to make it feel like it has more stuff in it. If you take off the top cover - the initial response is something like where is the radio?. It turns out most of the radio is comprised of surface mount components on the bottom side of the main PC board. For those of you who have read their brochure, you know that the first IF is 8.2 MHz and this is where your roofing filter is. I have two in my radio currently - 400 hz and 2.8 khz. There is room for five of them. You can either switch between the filters and have the DSP match the roofing filter - or continuously vary the bandwidth and have the roofing filters automatically switch to the smallest filter that can be used to support the desired bandwidth. The combination of the roofing filter and DSP results in a receiver that will hold its own in any situation I can imagine. The receiver sounds great and is a joy to use on SSB or CW. It even did well decoding RTTY signals directly to the diplay during the recent NAQP RTTY contest. Too bad the firmware isn't all done yet - or I could have made some QSOs by sending information with my paddle and have the radio send it out in RTTY or PSK. On SSB - the transmit audio sounds very clean and I have gotten good reports on the air (including a rag chew with KC7V on six meters). The flexbility of the hardware is mainly determined by the firmware. Elecraft has obviously packed plenty of power into the processor that executes the firmware as the controls are all very responsive. I was impressed to find out that the squlech knob can be used for the RF gain of the second receiver if installed. The second receiver is an exact copy of the main receiver (again with up to 5 filters) and will enable diversity reception amongst other things. The transmitter puts out 120 watts - so you have a bit of extra drive power for your pair of 3-500Zs. :-) The operating controls are easy to use. It didn't take me long to become at one with the radio. The VFO dial can be setup for 8 khz per rotation, which is responsive enough for those fast sprint QSYs. This is with 20 hz resolution - so you don't hear the frequency steps (which I consider to be very hard to listen to). And the radio didn't turn into a pile of parts after about 7K miles on the tough KL7/VY1/VE7 roads. :-) I understand Elecraft is close to publishing their performance numbers. They want to make sure they have enough data from several units before doing this and they tend to put some safety margin into them. I understand they will give even the $10K radios a run for their money - and probably finish ahead in many areas. I am not a numbers expert and go more by the sound of the radio - and this one sounds great. Elecraft is hard at work finishing up the firmware. Some of the functionality is new as of a few days ago and we are getting constant updates to fix bugs and add new features. 73 Tree N6TR [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ CQ-Contest mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/cq-contest ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 shipping status update
Our field testers are a very diligent and experienced bunch. They've been working hard (on your behalf, as well as theirs) to exercise every possible K3 feature and uncover opportunities for refinement. The firmware development team (Wayne, N6KR, and Lyle, KK7P) has been putting in very long hours to keep up, and we've made some minor component changes as well. As a result, important features like FSK mode, text decode/display, flexible VOX control, KRC2 support and many others are being optimized under real-world conditions. We've also verified our performance on multiple K3s both in the lab and on the air. The field testers have really pounded on the user interface, and the tweaking we've done has made the radio both easier to use and more versatile. The same engineers who are doing firmware and hardware development are also heavily involved in completing the user documentation. This is why we haven't been able to release a draft owner's manual or assembly manual. We've got a lot of catching up to do on these tasks, so we're revising our target shipping date for the first K3 production run to start at the end of August. K3 materials purchasing and manufacturing is well underway and our staff has been working hard to make sure all of the key K3 components arrive in Aptos at the right time. This is a tremendous task, as you might imagine, and they have done an excellent job hunting down every problem supplier and component. Our production staff will use the extra time to build inventory and refine our automated K3 testing. This will allow us to minimize any delay to the second and later production runs. Our goal is to ship a stable, and high quality, product starting with the first one out the door. We think you will be pleased with our results. We appreciate your patience as we transition into full K3 production. We'll keep you informed of our progress, and look forward to your feedback on the manuals as they near completion. [Elecraft] Request for K3 station configuration details
Hi all, One thing that has become clear during field test is that every station is different. There are an endless array of decoders, rotator controllers, amps, ATUs, filters, SteppIR boxes, audio I/O hardware, computers and operating systems. We can't come and visit your shacks individually to see what you're using, but we *can* take a survey. Our goal is to make K3 firmware and future station accessories compatible with as many devices as possible, so your life will be easier. If you have a complex station configuration, please send me a list of the the model numbers and manufacturers of each important piece of gear you're using. I'm sure there will be many items I'm not familiar with (yet). I won't be able to reply to any of these messages (for obvious reasons), but I'll put them in a special folder, and when I get a chance, I'll sort them into categories. Or assign someone else to do it :) The equipment which shows up most often will be at the top of our list for evaluation in future firmware releases. In some cases we may buy the gear ourselves to make sure it works well. Please don't send this information to the list -- only to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks! This will give me more time to get in some summer fishing and vacation. 73, Henry - K4TMC -Original Message- From: Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft List elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Mon, 23 Jul 2007 7:24 pm Subject: [Elecraft] K3 shipping status update Our field testers are a very diligent and experienced bunch. We've already had many offers to proofread -- thanks! 73, Wayne, N6KR Eric, WA6HHQ _..._ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 shipping status update
I think that most of us understand. As first shipments of a new product near, more and more small issues pop up and these need to be corrected - so the initial optimistic schedules slip. However, I've always found that the best engineers are optimistic engineers. And it is always better to miss an optimistic schedule than it is to miss a pessimistic schedule. Thanks for your tremendous efforts. Phil - AD5X ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] that Drake or Collins sound
My original Hallicrafters SX101MkIII had that sound, which I haven't heard for over 20 years. It was so easy to adjust the pitch and had a remarkable filter on it's 50Kc IF. That's 50 KHz for the younger hams ;) Al WA6VNN ** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KX1 repair complete!
Last week I posted (in quite a state of despair) about the temporary death of my KX1 (S/N 1601). Long story short was that I had most likely shorted Q6 to the top case due to some metal burrs poking through the countersunk hole for the nylon screw. I smelled an awful burning odor, shut off the KX1 and found that I had burned the trace under R16 and R17. By searching the archives of this list, I found a fellow builder who had reported on the same problem (Denny, W7SNH). http://marc.info/?l=elecraftm=111269643608699w=2 Denny, as well as others on this list and the folks at [EMAIL PROTECTED] helped guide me through the repair process. I've documented some of the work below, for those of you who like photos. http://www.flickr.com/photos/shadle/sets/72157600964189359/ Main lesson learned from this repair and experience was that it is super important to put a 1.5A fuse inline with the positive lead of an external battery. That may have limited damage to my PCB. Thanks to the folks at Elecraft for getting replacement parts to me in short order (received them today and finished my repair this evening). Happy to report 3w out on 40m and 4w out on 20m with the DL1 at 12.8v in from the gel cell (fused, of course). ;) Thanks for all your help. Lesson learned. -john W4PAH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] that Drake or Collins sound
If u hv never listened to CW on a 75A-4 with a matching spkr, u have not really heard CW. Maybe we should get Bob Heil to teach new rcvr engineers a thing or two? 73 Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ http://liveearth.msn.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. On behalf of my two cocker spaniels - thanks for the delay! They are happy that August will be devoted to dog-walking and not playing radio. With luck my DELL M1330 will have arrived by then.
