Re: Re: [Elecraft] OT: News Article on Tin Whiskers Ruining Electronics

2007-10-20 Thread d.cutter
The problem with ROHS compliant soldering is that you must not be able to mix
it up with leaded solder. So, a manufacturer has to have one or the other, or
separate lines running one each exclusively. So, if the manufacturer wants
volume production capability it has to move over to lead-free and dispense with
leaded all together in a practical set-up.

BTW, I don't think there are any cases of death by poisoning from leaded
solder: it's now only a case of environmental issues (ie politics).

main problem with the article is both space programs and military are
exempt from being ROHS compliant, so why would lead free solder be in
 a satellite?

Your seating position is critical to long term comfort. I learnt this on a
typing course back in days of old. The forearm needs to be horizontal,
particularly NOT elbow lower. An adjustable chair is good.

I much prefer a disc under the knob so that the middle finger presses on that
and the thumb and forefinger just rest on the knob for guidance. The middle
finger acts as a hinge against the larger movement of the wrist and arm which
can move up and down an inch, whereas the gap might be only the thickness of
paper.

I use a push pull action, two fingers on the top of

[Elecraft] OT: re 2 learning the code tips

2007-10-20 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
Ken said that using script is faster than printing. Not for me!

I think it depends a lot on the size of your handwriting. I find that
I can print tiny letters faster than I can write in script, which
tends to get larger (again, for me). The most important factor (for
me) is that I can always read my printed notes later (days, weeks,
years later), while my script is nearly illegible even a few hours
later. I have to work hard to figure it out.

While I almost never hard copy cw anymore (not for many decades), I
do take notes in seminars (and when I was in class for way too many
years). Printing works for me! If I had used script, I would have
flunked out during my first year of college.

Currently, this is also the advise that I offer to the MD's in the
hospital where I work (6,000 of 'em). Hand-written MD notes done in
script are a dog to decipher. It is exceedingly rare to find MD notes
(or any provider notes) that are easy to read when done in script.
Printed notes are nearly always a piece of cake to read. MD's who
have moved from large, loopy script to tiny printing love it and are
real believers. Now if we could only convince them to type!

Give it a try - you might be surprised!

[Elecraft] XV50: Birdie Problem

2007-10-20 Thread JT Croteau
I have a birdie problem too close for comfort to the 50MHz SSB calling
frequency of 50.125. The noise is about 22 dB above the noise floor
at it's peak. The noise starts to come into my passband around
50.125.35 and is present for ~ 2 KHz.

Here is a spectrogram plot of it taken at 50.126.45:
http://n1ese.qrpradio.com/images/birdie.jpg

and here is a recording I made as I tune the VFO from 50.125 through 50.128:
http://n1ese.qrpradio.com/sounds/50mhzBirdie.mp3

Any ideas how to track down something like this and does it look like
a problem internal to my K2 or XV50 or does it sound like it might be
external somewhere in the environment around the shack?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] first K2 problem

2007-10-20 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dom,

Look first for an unsoldered connection somewhere on the Control Board
or on the Front Panel Board (the control board is the most likely place
for the problem).

Often unsoldered connections can work for several years before they
develop enough oxidation to cause a break in what was only a mechanical
connection.

If you do not find anything unsoldered, start with DC voltage
measurements on the Control Board.

Hi;

40-50 ma of grid current should get you about 1500 W out. Don't over drive
the tube and it will last for years and years.

Eimac tests the 8877 key down at 30 MHz , 3kw for hours before it's sold.

It's a very good tube.

Eimac is a division of CPII (Communications and Power Industries,
Inc.). Richardson Electronics is one of the primary distributors of new
Eimac products. These tubes can last a lifetime in Amateur service if
treated with respect. I don't know about this particular tube, but
there is a considerable market in used power tetrodes on the web. You
can sometimes get a kW level power tetrode with half its service life
left for a couple of hundred $.

Hi Bob;

That's correct, the 3CX1500A7 and D7 are completely different tubes. My
remarks were from experience with the 3CX1500A7, the 8877. I don't know
anything about the D7. If the tube is a 3CX, then it's a Triode (unless the
coding has changed).

If you're interested, you might have a look on the Eimac WEB Site. I think
it's kept current.

CPI and Eimac/Varian have business offices in Palo Alto, CA.

Richardson is not the only vendor for the 8877. I don't know about the D7.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net on hold unless ...

2007-10-20 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening from San Ramon, California.

I spent the last few days driving to Pacificon and participating in the event.
One last session of meeting and greeting folks at the banquet this evening and
then I'll be on the road back home. No, I do not have my rig in my truck.
I'll not be on the air until I get back home some time Monday night.

It was fun seeing many of the folks I've worked on the Elecraft Net. Carter,
N3AO, was very happy to see me. The most interesting meeting occurred when I
talked to Wayne for about twenty minutes before he figured out who I was. I
was wearing a bright red Elecraft shirt with my name, call sign, and NCS ECN on
it. Must have been something I said which made him look closer at the text :)
Eric took less than a second to determine my identity! Lisa was the fastest
because she and I worked in an Elecraft booth a number of years ago. I also
met Fred, Dale, and Chris. I am sure there were a few others but names and
calls escape me. I have not slept very well since leaving home; cities have
too much noise in them for me to rest very long. But, soon I'll be back on the
mountain for the winter and will experience my peaceful retreat.

It was very nice to meet and talk engineering with Lyle. Very interesting
fellow. If you get the chance talk with him for a while. It was nice to hear
a high level discussion of some of the design decisions taken while crafting
the DSP module of the new K3. Later I heard some of the same from Eric while
he was giving a talk at Pacificon. I will remember my visit to San Ramon and
Pacificon for quite some time.

If anyone wishes to start and run ECN tomorrow please take notes and send me
the list of folks you worked. You should know the routine by now and know what
to ask new folks. I'll do the writing if you wish so the lists and database
stay in order. Then I'll send more gossip about the folks at the Skunk Works
of Aptos!

  Kevin. KD5ONS

[Elecraft] first K2 problem

2007-10-20 Thread lbailey
Dom - I had the same problem. I turned the rig on. LSB, 75 mtrs - - No
indication on the s-meter when I tuned the VFO, the frequency would not
change. I unplugged everythingmicrophone, key, antenna. Then I
turned the K2 back...all back to normal. The problem was my straight key.
It was in the 'closed' position.

All okay now.

when powering the K2 , the elecraft text appears on the LCD , followed by
the frequency where it was used before I got the pb . No noise at all in

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 - DSP - Impressive

I have had the DSP for the K2 now for some time. I have to admit, I got the
instructions out the first couple times I played with it, but I did not
quite get it as far as the settings and the menu choices, and just kinda
left things alone.

Over the intervening weeks, when I would get on SSB to chat with friends I
kept tinkering with it, and trying different settings (it didn't really seem
to need to be fiddled with on CW). Eventually I had the thing so screwed
up, that it was more of a hindrance than a help.

So I broke down and printed out a section of the manual (I'm more of a soft
copy kinda guy, but don't what to start that thread up again) and sat down
at the radio to try and get the DSP back to all of its default settings.
Now, as it turns out, reading through the manual, it is not abundantly
obvious (for some of us denser folks) how to do this, but when I read a bit,
and tinkered a bit, I worked through it just fine. Except for SSB #1 and
the LowPass settings, I couldn't make that happen.

Once I worked through all of the settings for each filter setup, I learned
quite a bit. As many have said before me, this is a VERY impressive DSP. I
did not fully understand the capabilities and settings till now. It is
definitely worth the investment of time to learn.

I even broke down and read through Lyle's Design Considerations for the
KDSP.
As always, great stuff. Thanks again Elecraft. Not only do you supply
great equipment, but your documentation gives explanations of how the
equipment works, thus we become more knowledgeable operators. Thanks, and
great job!
