[Elecraft] K3 S/N #25 is alive

2007-11-02 Thread Craig Rairdin
I just finished the basic QRP K3. I still need to do the PA. Total building
time was 5 hours and 48 minutes. I didn't waste a lot of time inventorying
parts up-front. Only 37 minutes was dedicated to counting screws. I
inventoried the miscellaneous bag, which has almost all the hardware, and
the front panel bag, which has some more hardware for the front panel.
Because of the way the K3 is kitted, the rest of the subassemblies can be
easily compared to the parts list as they're needed.

As is my custom I took a picture at the end of every page but frankly it's a
little boring when you're not watching the number of parts mounted to the
board grow as you flip each page. I'll probably post them at my site just to
be thorough, but I don't know if they'll be very helpful. The photos in the
manual are all you really need.

The build time also includes a couple of re-do's as I tried to handle a
situation where I didn't have the right screws for the job. The manual
called for two 3/8 screws, but I didn't have any of those. Looking at an
older version of the assembly manual I decided to substitute 3/16 screws.
Then after talking to the experts we concluded they must've substituted 1/4
screws in my kit. So I removed the side panel and replaced the 3/16 screws
with 1/4. Then when I was almost done I found out I was two 1/4 screws
short so off came the side panel and back went the 3/16 screws to free up
the 1/4 for their true purpose. All of this is being reported back to
Elecraft so your kit probably won't have this issue. :-)

Hopefully I'll get the PA finished tomorrow and have the rig on the air for
CW SS.

I found I had to force this connector on and that it wouldn't seat
completely. It appears to be the design of the contacts, which
completely surround the pin and don't have room for expansion at the
entry to the contact. I was concerned about stripping the plating on the
pins after a few cycles.

However, I also bought the KIO2, so now this connector goes into the
KIO2 connector board and the PC mounted female connector on the KIO2
connector board has a contact design which doesn't have this problem.

I noticed lack of low frequencies, looking at the schematics I find
the the LP cutoff is abt 640 Hz, determined by C25, C26 and the 5k vol
pot ( this is wheather using DSP or not).
By increasing C25 and C26 to 0.2uF (from 0.1uF) the LP cutoff is
moved to abt 320 Hz. This makes better sounding SSB signals and also helps
in CW mode when copying low pitch signals.

To lower the LP cutoff, I soldered 0.1uF SMD caps across
C25 and C26 on the control board. To my ears K2 now sounds better.

[Elecraft] Re: Waiting for K3 deliveries - Patience is a virtue!

2007-11-02 Thread ON4FG

Hi,

I could not agree more!!!
I follow the development of the K3 with great interest and eagerly would
like to read some comments on its performance before I decide to get one.

As a keen contester I worked with a FT2000 in the IARU world championship,
40m CW, too many buttons, settings and my K2 receiver is so much better.
The last CQWW contest I used my K2 on 40m (SSB) in a multi-multi station
(OT5A).
During the preaparation I received a lot of comments on my choice of
transceiver like: what are you going to use? a K2? That litlle box? We are
all used to the FT1000/2000. and more of that stuff.
After a short demonstration they ALL agreed that the K2 has a superb, quiet
receiver and excellent filters.

This was confirmed by all the operators after the CQWW contest.

Performance wise this rig competes with top class transceivers.
So I just wait to see an rig comparison with the K3.

Greetings Elecrafters

I just have to comment about the impatience being shown by those
waiting to receive their K3s.

Please be patient, after all we don't want Eric and Wayne to expire
with early heart attacks! do we?

I'm really enjoying using my K2/100 these days into a simple low
doublet, this radio never fails to amaze me

and I've used an ORION II, PRO III and an FT2000

the only good thing I can say about the FT2000 is the excellent
netting facilities for cw.

I've got to admit that I don't have much impatience but will probably
order a basic K2/10 in about 6 months

what's the hurry?

[Elecraft] K2/100 and ACOM-1000

2007-11-02 Thread ON4FG

Hi,

I just got an ACOM-1000 that i am using with my K2.
When I am drivng it with 13...14W for approximately 300W output, I noticed
that I got a power output reading in excess of 1kW during the start of my
SSB transmission, just for a second or less. CW seems to be ok.

Does anyone else noticed this? What can be done about it?
I heard that some FT1000 had a transient, putting 200W into the amplifier at
the start of the transmission, and the PA did not survive this.

I do not want this to happen with my PA.

2007-11-02 Thread Julian G4ILO
I think that in the K2, the ALC is implemented by firmware. It takes a
couple of seconds to adjust to the correct level, the first time after
the radio is switched on. Perhaps that's what you are seeing?

Perhaps you could try reducing the mic gain, or get in the habit of
whistling up the audio with the amp switched out, the first time you
power on, to let the ALC set the correct level?

I too have a K2 and Acom 1000 and have experienced the same problem. As I

This is a known problem - take a look at this (and the subsequent messages in

2007-11-02 Thread johnny

Hello Mike,

I didn't realise you were in this group.

It is lucky that Elecraft does have a big group of loyal customers.
Perhaps, its past goodwill and production quality lead to such a group of
patient and loyal customers. I think Elecraft will eventually learn
something and improve in future.

Having battled with the big brands, Elecraft is in fact not bad.

I think the shipment of K3 will eventually improve as Elecraft moves a long
further in the learning curve. We are born to make mistakes. However, if
we can really learn from mistakes and improve, the cost paid for the
mistakes is not wasted.

Like some of the others in this group, I am still waiting for my K3 and not
feeling good. However, I would give some chance to Elecraft because there
is not much similar kind of kit business in the amateur radio world. Let
them make profit and survive and we get more choices.

With Kenwood departing the amateur radio world and Yaesu's fluctuated
quality control, there are really not much left in the amateur radio world.
We need healthy product competition in order to force the manufacturer to
improve their products.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 and ACOM-1000

2007-11-02 Thread Mike Harris
Hi Stefaan,

Same here. It is a problem with overshoot of the requested output on SSB.
CW is perfectly OK. Not much you can do about it. I've tried the mod to
make the AGC more aggressive on the SSB board without much real effect.
The problem is worse on 40M and progressively decreases as you go up in
frequency and the overall TX gain drops.

The only solution I have is to turn the drive power way down on the very
odd occasion I use SSB on 40M, mainly because I don't like to see the amp
being thrashed.

I guess the overall problem is that the K2 was never really designed to
cope with +25dB gain on top of the base QRP setup. We are just pushing
the thing too far.

Having said that, there must be a raft of items on the K2 wish list that
could be addressed when the K3 frenzy dies down. A revised SSB board
possibly and some firmware upgrades.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

cycles of 15 minutes or so at 10 Watts. However, I've found that driver Q6 gets
hot to the touch after just a few minutes of key-down. Is a transmit cycle of
15 minutes really a good idea?

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day

2007-11-02 Thread vze3v8dt
Unfortunately, I forgot to post my results to QRP ARCI for the concurrent
running of the mW Field Day. Checked the ARRL results, though, and the QCWA-17
team who used one K2 and 1AB category placed 5th in the country and 12th in all
of EPA against all categories. We only had 4 operators and decreased our
station from 2 to 1 this time. The simpler setup and teardown was nice but I
think we would prefer to have been able to run 2A if possible, if we had enough
support.

The K2 was not mine, like it was on one of our two stations the last couple of
years, but was that of Don, W3LR, who built his the same time that I built
mine, somewhere around S/N 4600 I think. It worked quite well and I had a
great time using it during the midnight to 8 AM shift that I took. We ran CW
only except for the few QSOs on 6m.

By the way, there is also another activity that just started last year in
January called Winter Field Day. W3GS placed 1st in that one overall, however
we haven't heard anything about if/when it will occur in 2008. Anyone have any
other info on that?

Re: [Elecraft] K2: Temperature of driver Q6 during keydown

2007-11-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

Michael,

If you are talking of continuous key-down, that long a period could
cause a problem. The K2 power should be limited to 5 watts for
continuous keying (or continuous duty data modes).
'Transmit cycles' of 15 minutes would be transmitting normal CW as in a
QSO - that places the maximum duty cycle at 50% and you can run 10 watts
easily. Set a brick (or other appropriate device) on your dot paddle
and run it into a dummy load.

In most cases, you will not find a lot of improvement in the QRP K2
because the heat generating components are far away from the PLL and
thermistor area, but the heat does increase with the addition of the
KPA100 - more heat coupled with a smaller space.

2007-11-02 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
I stayed silent for a few days, but feel this has gone far enough.

I don't disagree about them being an outstanding small, talented company
struggling with a new product launch.

It doesn't make me a baby, cry-baby or whining when I, like a number of
others, voice our impatience.

It does make me frustrated at being given 4 dates that each time have not
been met - no matter what the reason, it is a fact that 4 dates have not
been met.

Yes, I'm impatient and perhaps even a little annoyed.
I'd be far happier if I'd been told at the beginning it probably wont ship
until Nov, but we will do our best.

This kind of thing is about managing expectation, and I (perhaps naively)
was led to believe I could expect it at the end of July.

It would not have changed my actions, I still would have put in my 50%,
possibly even the 100% I did put in. But I would not have been left
frustrated when it didn't turn up.

I do believe it is a great rig from a great company with great support etc.
and worth the wait - if I didn't, I wouldn't be here now.
I was toying with the idea of a K2 originally but had decided to go for an
FT-2000, mostly because I don't have the time to build and there were more
features in the Ft-2000 (especially for an SSB person struggling to learn
Morse), and frankly, I thought it looked more up to date (yes, I know, don't
judge a book by its cover).

The K3 changed all that and I put the money I would have spent on the
FT-2000 into the K3 - and yes, it was my choice to put 100% in, because of
the good exchange rate. That backfired on me, but that was my fault, not
Elecrafts' (ex rate £1 = $2.08 as of this moment).

Lets not let this difference of opinion grow out of proportion, we are all
entitled to our opinions and I don't have a problem with people voicing
theirs', as long as that doesn't degenerate to name calling etc.

[Elecraft] K3 STATUS -- a note from the lab

2007-11-02 Thread wayne burdick
Since the K3's PCB modules are pre-assembled, we have to 100% test
them, whether they're destined for a kit or for a fully-assembled unit.
I thought I'd give you some flavor of what goes into this.

For the K3 RF Board, we use a computer-controlled signal generator and
spectrum analyzer, along with the K3's built-in true-RMS audio
voltmeter, to do MDS tests on each band (receive mode). While the
process is partially automated, each unit's band-pass filters, first
I.F. trap, and mixer balance must be carefully aligned by hand. We also
sweep each band for return loss from the antenna through the T-R
switch. During this test, some low-pass filter toroid windings must be
hand-adjusted. In transmit mode, each band is checked for drive range,
max power output, key-down current drain, spectral purity, etc.

Performance tests of this kind are also done on all other modules
(there are over a dozen in even a basic K3). The results are highly
repeatable, ensuring that both kit and factory-assembled K3s work
equally well.

However, this turns out to be very time-consuming, so reducing test
time through automation is one of our major ongoing efforts. I'm now
pitching in to help our manufacturing-engineering team (Brian, W6FVI
and Rene, WR6MTR) by adding test firmware to the K3 itself. K3 owners
will benefit from this effort in another way, since some tests are
added to the K3's POST routine (power-up self-test), and all of the
added remote control commands can be used to advantage in third-party
software applications.

That's the news from the lab. Back to work

[Elecraft] K3 STATUS -- a note from the lab

2007-11-02 Thread Don Rasmussen
If you own a K2 (or K1, KX1, etc.) you almost expect
that kind of attention to detail to every single new
K3.

Hand crafting these boards is obviously tedious and
time intensive but necessary.

Rumors have it that underpaid workers do this from sun
up to sun down, 7 days a week, for as little as one
U.S. dollar per day.

This would be highly illegal if it was not the company
owners doing the work. ;-)

1. A project is a thing that starts slowly then moves too fast, reaches 95%

[Elecraft] KPA100 Upgrade Kit

2007-11-02 Thread Werner Furlan
I have nearly built the KPA100 after manual revision C.
I have seen there is an upgrade kit that I ordered (but not received), and now
I am
comparing it to the latest manual rev. E from January 2007.
I have seen there is Resistor R33 1k, 1/2 W in the Upgrade Kit and the
resistor in the latest manual is 1/4 Watt. The same applies to R4, 100k.
Is this difference critical? In my KPA100 there is a 1/4 W resistor packed.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Upgrade Kit

2007-11-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

Werner,

I do believe the 1/2 watt designation is a typo - I have not seen a 1/2
watt resistor as part of the upgrade kit.
Since you ordered the KPA100UPKT, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and ask for the 0.22 uf capacitor that is used at C31. This capacitor
*should* be included with the KPA100UPKT, but unfortunately is not yet
added. When you have the new capacitor in hand, remove the old C31 and
use the .22 uf in its place. (the KPA100UPKT tells you to update the
schematic with the new value, but it provides no other instructions.

As a reminder note to others (because I have been asked many times in
the past) - if you do not have the KPA100UPKT, please do *not* change
C31 - the new capacitor has a voltage rating that is OK for the new
design, but too low for the older design - it is not a separate mod, but
just a part of KPA100UPKT.

Wayne,

I have a K3 ordered from batch three. Please don't take any short-cuts for me.
I have four other HF rigs here and can wait for what I believe will be a very
good piece of equipment. I agree that you should, for your sake, work on
speeding the test and assembly and process, but not at the expense of quality.
I look forward to making a side by side comparison with my Orion II, which has
so much RX hiss (no antenna attached) that it won't work with the XV144. Turning
the AGC off really doesn't kill the AGC, which makes adjusting the RF amp in the
XV144 impossible. I now use my FT-1000MP MK V with the XV144.

I am also especially interested in the possibility of using my Kenwood SM230
Band scope with the K3's IF output.

Keep up the good work!

Since the K3's PCB modules are pre-assembled, we have to 100% test

However, this turns out to be very time-consuming, so reducing test
time through automation is one of our major ongoing efforts. I'm now
pitching in to help our manufacturing-engineering team (Brian, W6FVI
and Rene, WR6MTR) by adding test firmware to the K3 itself. K3
owners will benefit from this effort in another way, since some
tests are added to the K3's POST routine (power-up self-test), and
all of the added remote control commands can be used to advantage in
third-party software applications.

That's the news from the lab. Back to work

Interestingjust curiousis one of the last steps before
packing and shipping to update the firmware? Seems like you all make
a lot of changes, which will benefit all of us. Seems that one of
the first steps after turning puppy on would be to check for an update?

[Elecraft] Unpacking a K3 Kit

2007-11-02 Thread AJSOENKE
K3 SN 31 consists of a kit version K3 with antenna tuner KAT3 with a
KPA3 and several filters.

1. When taking delivery - first inspect shipping container for any obvious
damage. SOP

2. Package contains a number of items - a shipping document, approximately
300 packing peanuts and three boxes wrapped in bubble pack. On top is the KPA3
loosely embedded in the styrofoam peanuts.
Underneath is a layer of bubble wrap containing the K3 main box. At the
bottom is a flat box about 1 1/2 inch thick labeled K3 chassis set - don't
mistake it for the bottom of the shipping box.

3. Prepare the kitchen table or other large work area to open boxes. Get a
kitchen trash bag for the packing materials.

4. Carefully cut the tape on the boxes. If you use a scissors to nick the
tape it'll tear. If you use a knife don't go deeper than the cardboard there
are a lot of plastic bags full of parts underneath. Books are in Main Box
for assembly, and operation. Check rev letter and read all notices,
especially the one about the firmware.

5. Be prepared for a lot of parts bags and take inventory as you dig in.
Don't expect to get it all back in the box the way it came. I think Elecraft
maybe spent a good part of the preparation time figuring out how to get all
those parts tucked in so well.

6. In Chassis Set Box there are a lot of cabinet parts with fine finishes,
be careful unwrapping them.

7. Start reading and have fun!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 STATUS -- a note from the lab

2007-11-02 Thread Jeff Stai

Yes - updating the firmware would be recommended. Several of us early recipients did get an email to
that effect right after we got our K3s.

Like most companies, I suspect Elecraft will not release new firmware to manufacturing very often,
just doing so when it is called for. So, check for an update after you get yours working.
Fortunately this is very simple on an internet connected windows PC.

I hear you! They are the garden variety white, and a mix of different types.
Be assured everything is sealed in solid boxes beneath the peanuts and

Definitely, Thom. Easy to do, too, using our K3 download utility, which
does a few other things besides just download code.

[Elecraft] CW roofing filters for the K3

2007-11-02 Thread Joseph Trombino Jr
My K3 will be in the 2nd production run so I have some time to make a
decision regarding CW roofing filters for the K3 as well as the 2700hz stock
SSB filter .

Am wondering though if the Elecraft lab has made any measurements in
comparing the performance of the 5 pole 500hz CW filter as opposed to the 8
pole 400hz CW filter.

Believe I read that the DSP will make up for any loss caused by the 8 pole
CW filter.

The Ten Tec Orion had a problem with the optional 500hz roofing filter in
that when that filter was selected an amp was turned on to make up for the
additional loss the filter causedin turn the IMD performance of the
receiver suffered. I went to an Inrad filter (believe it is 5 pole) 600hz
filter and plugged it into the 1000hz filter socket to get around this
problem.

My hope is that going to the 8 pole CW filter over the 5 pole CW filter
won't cause a similiar problem in the K3 (I'm betting it won't but I would
sure like to hear more about these filters to aid in my decision on which
one to buy with the rig)

Similiar info regarding replacing the stock 2700hz SSB filter with the 8
pole 2800hz filter would be most appreciated as well.

Since there probably aren't too many K3's out there yet to get feedback on
the above questions I would hope that the Elecraft lab folks could provide
some qualitative information with numbers to allow comparisons to be made.
