Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTC accuracy

2008-01-24 Thread Alan Bloom
Wow, a second per minute is 16,667 ppm error. That can't be due to the
accuracy of the 32 kHz resonator - there's no way it could be off that
much. It sounds like a programming error where it's counting the
seconds incorrectly, but I doubt that could be the problem since it
would have shown up before this.

Sounds like the 3V battery is dead or disconnected. I would check the
power to the real-time clock chip (U16 pin 8 on the front panel board)
while flexing the board and see if perhaps it's intermittent. Do that
both with and without power turned on. You shound measure almost 5V
with power on and 3V with power off.

Check that stiff encoder very carefully. It may be fine AFTER you carefully
unwind some bits of the felt from the bearing and it'll be a FB spare.

My old K2 developed that problem several months after I built it. Looking
closely I could see some bits of the felt hairs caught in the C-ring and
bearing. I carefully tugged gently on each hair with tweezers while turning
the shaft in the direction needed to unwind each one and, after removing
several of them suddenly the encoder ran free again.

Then I used a bit of "superglue" seal the inside edge of the hole in the
felt washer so other threads wouldn't get entangled and replaced it. I never
had the problem again.

[Elecraft] k2 earphone jack

2008-01-24 Thread Jferg977
Comrades,
Thanks for all the ideas on what to do with the earphone jack. I conclude
that no more robust jack is available that will fit. I switch from a headset
to a cable to feed a very nice laptop based dsp cw terminal program (written
by AG4ND) and so need to change the plug at least once almost every day.

What I think I'm going to do is replace the external speaker jack on the
back with a more substantial one and possibly use a small pigtail to minimize
the number of changes on this new built-in one.

Whenever the Aptos Gang gets back to the K2, I'd have to say from what I've
seen here, that J2 would be a great candidate for a solid upgrade. But I do
love the k2

[Elecraft] Key Paddle Kits

2008-01-24 Thread Doug Person
Thanks for everyone's comments. The Black Widow seems like a great deal
so I ordered one. I have collection of keys none of which I'm very
happy with. Most are on ebay right now and not getting much attention.
I hope to end up with a nice, light compact key with good action and
heavy one that stays put. If the Black Widow doesn't give me the feel I
want then I'm going to try a Kent or an Elecraft HexKey. I hate to
invest that much since I don't work that much cw anymore. I'm finding it
hard to make good contacts at my leisurely 15 wpm. And what is up with
these ops sending code with about a millisecond between their dots and
dashes? Is that a kind of "I'll work you if you can copy me" attitude? I
don't get these highly stylized sending patterns. Is it meant to
intentionally make it hard to copy?

[Elecraft] A happy K2 post - for a change......

2008-01-24 Thread David Lankshear
I'd been unhappy with the stiffness of my K2's rotary encoder for a while, so
when a replacement unit was provided by Scott, I thought it was time for a
makeover of my fully loaded K2/100.

The new rotary encoder was definitely an improvement. The original encoder was
stiff to turn, even in the absence of the felt washer friction pad, but the new
encoder was so free-running, I had to dig out and install that piece of felt.
Thanks a million, Scott, the feel of the rig has been improved immensely.

I also took the opportunity to replace the AF gain pot, which had a wobbly
knobbly. It had no effect on performance, but every time I moved the AF gain
control, I was distracted by the knob's wobble.

While the lid was off, I decided to do a complete realignment. Again, I found a
good setting of L34 difficult to achieve. For me, Spectrogram, with its
ever-changing display, proved unhelpful but very careful listening to a weak
signal from my genny on 14MHz found a gentle but significant dip in the
background noise. AGC voltage setup range ran up to 3.83v and at ALL settings,
the AGC reduced the level of a very weak (S1 or less) signal. Eventually I
settled on 3.68v as the one that had least effect on a signal just above the
noise floor, but there should have been a point where the AGC action cut off..

It was interesting to note that after several months of use, slight
improvements could be made to most settings, either because a "bedding in" had
taken place or my values had changed.

I was very impressed with the residual carrier suppression on SSB. I used a GC
Rx with antenna to monitor the carrier level on SSB when transmitted into
another antenna. The antennas were only a few feet apart, but a small
adjustment left only a very weak residual carrier on SSB. It was lower than the
1uV level from the Elecraft XG2!

I found that the screws on one of the KPA100 PA transistors could be tightened
by maybe a little less than 1/8 of a turn. The other was yomped down good and
tight. A slight improvement of SWR eedback was achieved and the PA bias setting
proved far more docile to adjust than my recollection of it when newly
constructed. There was far less "drift" as the transistors warmed up.

I then went off the rails. It was my intention to check higher power output
against a "reasonable" wattmeter. When I held "Tune", regardless of the higher
power setting, I only saw 22W until I moved the power output control. Somewhat
bewildered, I took a break to allow my limited mental resource to do a spot of
background processing. Sure enough, the back of my mind came up trumps. Tune
limits the output to approx, 2W in QRP and 20W in QRO. Press Tune and Display
to override. Yep! Another case of RTFM! Doh!

I did find one parameter of 8-somethingorother was set to "nor" and not to
"hold" as the KPA100 manual instructs, but switching between its original
setting and the instructed setting didn't seem to make any difference.
Eventually, I went with the manual's recommended setting.

Overall, I reckon to have squeezed a little more out of the K2. I haven't been
able to get an audio report on the slightly changed SSB filter settings but
prior to adjustment, I had good reports on SSB audio, despite my rather deep
voice. I've moved the notional baseline of all the filters available in SSB up
by 50Hz approx. Time and a co-operative local who knows my voice will tell.

Was it worth it. Most definitely YES. Some settings had either drifted slightly
or my interpretation had changed. I managed to reduce tuning display inaccuracy
from approx 30Hz to less than 10Hz and make improvements to a few more
settings. Were they significant? NO, I doubt it, but it DID provide a refresher
course and it leaves me satisfied for the time being. It's good to touch base
occasionally.

As with all home constructed equipment, there's always a nagging feeling that
"something" can be improved upon. Is this the eternal treadmill to which we are
all consigned? It's an undoubted YES for me.

As recommended on my bulletin board, think twice, post once.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 RTC accuracy

2008-01-24 Thread Carl Clawson
Oooohh this brings back painful memories, but thankfully they are somewhat
vague after a couple decades. MS-DOS could show similar problems because 1)
it only read the (fairly accurate) RTC at boot and used the much less
accurate CPU clock to keep time thereafter, and 2) if you used the clock
interrupt for your own purposes -- driving stepper motors in our case -- you
could lose additional clock time if you dawdled too much. We dawdled -- a
lot. Eventually there came available aftermarket clock drivers that would
read the RTC for everything and not depend on an inaccurate and potentially
unreliable clock. I think we ended up writing our own driver after first
discovering several other ultimately flawed "solutions".

A typical spec for a CPU clock used to be 0.01%, but that would only have
you off by at worst about 9 seconds per day. This is still far worse than a
typical quartz watch which is good to more like one second a week.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - K60XV Transverter Keying Output Questions

2008-01-24 Thread AD6XY - Mike

You might consider the multiple IO control output which will allow you to
control each transverter individually.

If not, how about using the transverter TX (or RX) RF output to carry both
RF and control by imposing a DC voltage on it then and tapping it off in
each transverter? This is easy, just use an RF choke at each end. A good
enough RF choke is a 4.7K resistor and an RF bypass capacitor. The advantage
is fewer cables and if you use the TX line, you can't TX accidentally
without PTT control.

Regardless of what Q3 can or can not switch, it is always a good idea not to
switch the RF relays directly with the rig. It is much better to include a
switching transistor in the transverter and make the control signal low
current so you can protect it and the rig with a series resistor. One day,
by accident, you will connect the 12V supply directly to that line. The more
sure you are you won't, the more likely you will.

Re: [Elecraft] k2 earphone jack

2008-01-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Not that I have been able to find. The problem is twofold 1) it has to
have the same form factor if it is to fit, and 2) it must have the
isolated set of contacts for the speaker line.

As it has been mentioned, one could mount a larger jack on the rear
panel, or use the external speaker jack on the rear.

If you are going to add the toggle switch, there is no need to
replace
the jack.
The toggle switch replaces the contacts that no longer work.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - K60XV Transverter Keying Output Questions

2008-01-24 Thread Don Wilhelm

Steve,

There *is* room (but just barely) for an RCA jack just above the key
jack. Take a look at where the jack is located in the photos of my K2
Fixed Audio Output article on my website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com. I
have since moved the fixed audio output to the microphone jack and now
have that same jack wired just for the keying output of the K60XV.

The 2N7000 data sheet should provide the information about the voltage
and current capacity, and then you will have to compare that to the
relay voltages and draw from your transverters.

[Elecraft] K2 Knob tip

2008-01-24 Thread G3YMC

Like many of you I suspect I have been plagued with the black paint rubbing
off the front of my K2 knob over time. I have repeatedly tried touching it
up with black car touch-up paint but before long it looks a mess again. I
have been considering attaching a new front plastic disc on it to sort the
problem, but with my mechanical skills it would unlikely look very pretty.

Today I was eyeing a pile of electrolytic capacitors in the junk box. I
picked up a 470uF 400V cap and noticed it had a nice black plastic disc on
its top, covering up the aluminium below. Even better it was 34mm diameter,
about the same as the K2 knob. A quick cut and pare with the wire cutters
and it was removed and stuck on the front of my knob. Superb. Maybe
won't last, but I have quite a few more of those caps! And this mod doesn't
even make the caps unusable, they work just the same without their plastic
top!

[Elecraft] K3 RTC - Battery and more

2008-01-24 Thread Arnie Grubbs
Well, found that the battery that I used on the RTC backup was NG.
Measured it and it didn't have any B+. I had another of the same
size and now the battery backup works FB!

Also, as far as time keeping, it seems my radio looses about
1 second each min. In 1 hour 16 min. it was off by 1 min. 12 sec.
compared to WWV on 5Mhz.

Strange thing is, it must be looking at the RTC chip for an update
of the time when ever you change bands. Change bands and it 'resyncs'
to the WWV time that the RTC chip must be keeping. Seems that the
'software' clock is the 'looser'. Now that I have a good battery for
the RTC chip the RTC keeps good time!

Guess it might be something for the 'to do' list to check on the
clock software in the "ROS" - Radios operating system... :)

[Elecraft] K3 278 up and running

2008-01-24 Thread G3SJJ
What a sweet dream! Everything extremely well packed and clearly marked.
Manual is very easy to follow. Build quality is excellent. The inventory
is well worth doing. I numbered the different screws down the side of
the manual page, separated them into different compartments of a couple
of pattie (muffin) tins and marked the compartments with a felt tipped
pen. That made selection much simpler.

I only encountered two small problems - Fitting the front panel unit to
the main board. With two pairs of connectors and not being able to see
one pair when watching the other, it was a bit of a juggling act and the
first try I didn't get it mated correctly, 2nd go was fine. I found
tightening the set-screws on the concentric knob fiddly.

First QSO was with N0SS on 20CW (K3), then YV1NX followed by W7QC (K3.)
The CW sidetone is really smooth and very pleasant to listen to, I felt
I could have sat at 35wpm all day. Tx power level very stable so setting
uo the Acom 1000 amp was quick and easy. Receiver sounds really good, I
haven't had time to evaluate it in tough condx. G to W7/0 is hardly
testing at present. 80m CW sounds good and the NR seems to help reducee
power line noise on my 70ft vertical. The one thing I really like is the
variable width control on receive.

I went for the K3 as I felt the K2 (which I sold last June) lacked was
good but lacked finesse. Well this has got all the things that I wanted
and more. I now need to integrate it into my SO2R system then I can do
direct comparisons with the FT1kMP. I hope to be active over this
weekend in CQWW 160CW, after which I will investigate SSB.

It has been along frustrating wait, not helped by poor communication,
unrealistic shipping dates, and also the constant harping and whining of
the those who think we should not complain. For me the Elecraft
experience has been tarnished by both of those aspects, and it will take
some time to recover. For now though I can savour the sweet K3!

Great Pics!!!

>>> If you look carefully at the high resolution
versions, you can see me peering back at the other
plane to maintain spacing.

This is some flying term that I am unfamilar with. Is
"maintain spacing" important in flying? ;-)

;-)

"Never let another airplane get in the way of a good
photo"

The in-flight photo was taken by a pilot friend and
professional photographer, Dan Dawson, while we flew
formation from Watsonville up to Half Moon Bay for
lunch on Sunday, Dec 30th. (He was a passenger in the
other plane.)

A friend wanted pics of his plane, a recently
refurbished 1970's Cessna

172, so I was the photo plane on the way up. After a
free lunch from him, Dan moved to the 172 plane and
they took pics of me on the way back home.

See http://flickr.com/photos/dandawson/tags/airtoair/
for the complete picture set of both planes. If you
look carefully at the high resolution versions, you
can see me peering back at the other plane to maintain
spacing.

And to answer another frequent question - No, I do not
make HF QSOs while in flight as PIC :-) (But when
Lerma is PIC I might sneak in one

or two VHF QSO's. No HF in the plane yet..)

[Elecraft] K3 277 arrives in Kernow

2008-01-24 Thread g4amt
K3 no 277 arrived at Sennen Cove, Cornwall yesterday afternoon (ordered 14th
May with deposit) but not before being disgracefully overtaken by G3SJJ`s
278 in transit !
UPS Express expensive but great service - 48 hours door to door; they phoned
to arrange VAT payment and again with eta for delivery.

Hopefullly will spring to life over coming weekend.

Eric,
That sure looks like a *182*, beautiful job on the refurbishing. Thanks for
sharing the photos.
By the way, I've been thinking ever since I first looked at Elecraft
website, your logo, the "lazy E", looks a lot like the control wheel on one
of those. Could there be a connection?

RE: [Elecraft] k2 earphone jack

2008-01-24 Thread Strode, Carl R
Yep - that is what I do as well. It' a bit tedious takig the radio apart
again and again, so the headphones are connected to the external speaker plug.
The audio level is different there as well, and it suits me just fine.

However, it certainly would be nice if the front jack would work.

When the jack fails on my K1, and I'm out in the bushes, I guess I'll just have
to pack-up and go home.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] k2 earphone jack

When the jack on my K2 failed, after I replaced it, and not wanting to go
through that again, I went with an external solution. I plugged a short "Y"
cord (from RS) into the external speaker jack and ran one extention off that on
the underside of my operating desk to the front edge and "mounted" the female
end in a hole I drilled. That's where I plug my headphones. No cord dangling
across the desk. The other end of the "Y" cord receives the cord from my
external speaker. To turn the speaker off I simply unplug the speaker. The
two cords are different colors so it is easy to tell which one to unplug.

RE: [Elecraft] k2 earphone jack

2008-01-24 Thread Strode, Carl R
Regarding the short life span of the Elecraft headphone jacks; I have replaced
the jack on my K2 twice. I just finished a K1 two weeks ago, and guess what?
The headphone jack failed the first time a plug was inserted. Luckily, I had a
spare laying around in my Elecraft spare parts bin.

Similarly, the K1 key jack had a bit of debris (a fragment of black plastic)
inside that took a considerable amount of wiggling and shaking to get it
cleared and working.

When do you suppose Elecraft will recognize this shortcoming and provide more
robust jacks?

By the way, I've never had a problem with getting replacements from Elecraft.
The spare I had was sent to me very quickly and at no cost the last time my K2
jack failed.

The defective contact lies at the rear pins of the jack, which you can
easily parallel with one pole of the switch. But you will also want to
switch the ground (i.e., sleeve) terminal of the jack with the other
pole, opposite throw (a DPDT switch). If you don't switch the
ground/sleeve line the headphones will end up being in parallel with
the speaker when it is selected.

The ground/sleeve terminal lies on the board side of the jack so you
will have to remove the jack to get to it; might as well replace it
with a good jack.

Of course, you could leave the defective jack in place, cut the ground
circuit trace and solder tack the switch across it. But that's no
easier than just replacing the jack with a good one, and no messing
with the traces.

Referring to my notes, the switch I used was p/n: 8011 from
Web-tronics. It is a DPDT (on-x-on) miniature size. Fits neatly in the
transverter hole beneath the speaker jack.

One solution is to wire in a speaker/headphone toggle switch when you

That will eliminate wear on the jack. (It's also lot more convenient
if you do a lot of plugging and unplugging of the headphones.) I
mounted the switch on the rear panel, below the speaker jack. I posted
a detailed article about this some months ago.

source appears to be the MCU on the Control Board, because the birdy can
still be detected below both K16 and K17 using a 'sniffer' whose exposed
'link' is approximately 1/8 inch in length, double shielded coax, when the
VCO, Reference oscillator and BFO are shut down to eliminate a 7 MHz product
from these sources. Changing the MCU's 4 MHz oscillator's frequency changes
the birdy's frequency at the rate of 7/4 as seen on a spectrum analyzer.
From 'sniffing' the pcb trace connecting K16 pin 3 to D6 (via C53) I found
maximum birdy amplitude to be at the K16 end, and removing D6 has little
effect. Between K17 pin 8 and the mixer there is not much difference in the
birdy's amplitude, the higher level being at the K17 end.

The birdy can also be found in my K2 on the pcb traces which connect to the
relay coils (pins 10) and in the nearby bundle of pcb traces, some of which
eventually lead to the Control Board. Without destroying my K2's RF board,
and with the test equipment that I have, I cannot be certain whether the
birdy is being conducted all the way or whether spatial coupling is also
present. However the existence of the birdy in the coil circuits K16 and K17
raises the possibility of the classic problem i.e. unwanted coupling between
a relay's coil and its contacts. I had intended to take a look at the RF
bypassing of the relay coils, or adding L-C filters, time permitting.

Without further investigation I suspect that this 7MHz birdy is being
introduced either via the relay coil circuits or by direct pick up by the
pcb trace between D6 and K16, or both.

If you would like to continue this discussion, I suggest that we do so
off-list. I am leaving the house soon, but expect to be here tonight.

One solution is to wire in a speaker/headphone toggle switch when you
replace the jack; then leave the headphones plugged in all the time.
That will eliminate wear on the jack. (It's also lot more convenient
if you do a lot of plugging and unplugging of the headphones.) I
mounted the switch on the rear panel, below the speaker jack. I posted
a detailed article about this some months ago.

There is a bigger picture than painted by the above. Taken as a snapshot
the above is fair and accurate and reasonable and correct. The problem

situation, with it's delays etc., is well known and needs to be accepted
as an unfortunate but unavoidable fact. Everyone needs to either shut up

complaints and discussion about dates have been made in polite, moderate
language, while most of the inflammatory comments and use of pejorative
language ("whiners", "whingers" etc.) has come from those who disagree with
them. So exactly who are the fine folks and who aren't?<<

All of this "in my opinion" is valid...However, it works both ways as regards
the use of pejorative language...Eric, Wayne, and Elecraft in general have been
accused of lying, deception, and subterfuge...Voicing disappointment and
frustration is one thing, attacks on the character of folks is quite another,
and that is what has happened here...IMHO, that is a reflection of character
and is not acceptable...

Mine loses about a second a day, compared to my radio-controlled clock or my
NTP-regulated computer. I have not observed any other problems with it..

Yes, mine too looses seconds, but not sure how much, less that you are
seeing (about 30 seconds in a week or so), I'll note it now.

It doesn't come up with a bad time or date when powered on - check your
internal battery is ok and installed the correct way around.

[Elecraft] K3 RTC accuracy

2008-01-24 Thread Arnie Grubbs

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has noticed the accuracy of the
real time clock in their K3?

Mine seems to be loosing about 1 sec. for every min. that goes by
as compared to WWV on 2.5 Mhz if left on. If I shut the rig off
and re-power it, jumps to some goofy time and date. Today the
date shows up as 19.36.41 and the time jumped 3 hours and 40 min.
ahead of where it was set when I cycled the power.

Anyone else have something similar happening or is it just my rig?

Thanks in advance for any info you can share.
