Wayne,
Thank you for your very comprehensive mail, it certainly has put
my mind at rest re potential issues involving separate receive
antennas into the K3.

 Hi all,

I'll address both of these issues.

 1. RX ANT input signal handling during TX

The KXV3's ANT IN jack includes a carrier-operated relay circuit
(COR).
If the COR kicks in too soon, they relay will switch off/on
during
keying. So its threshold is set high. It will still serve its
primary
function, which is to protect the transceiver when unsafe signal
levels
are present, such as when the RX antenna is in the near field of
a KW
transmit signal, or when a transmitter is accidentally connected
to
 this port.

This leaves a gray zone where the COR doesn't kick in, but the
transmit
signal may still be very high. High-power contest stations
sometimes
use additional external T/R switching if they can't avoid the
use of
 closely-coupled receive and transmit antennas.

We recently to a close look at this gray zone, and found that we
could
make an RX ANT jack on steroids by adding two more diode
isolation
sections. The resulting parts count is considerably higher, but
we feel
that the added protection during transmit would be worthwhile.
So this
change will be included in production units (once we use up our
present
 supply of assembled KXV3 modules).

Meanwhile, if your antenna configuration and power level warrant
this
higher degree of isolation, and you already have a KXV3, you can
modify
it. We're designing a small add-on board to make this easier. It
will
be supplied free of charge, on request.

This unit has not yet been assigned an Elecraft part number, and
isn't
available yet, so PLEASE don't request it until we announce the
 details.

 2. Buffered I.F. output spectra

The pick-off point for the K3's buffered I.F. output -- right at
the
output of the 1st mixer's post-amp stage -- was selected to give
the
widest possible bandwidth. Thus there is no filtering of any
kind from
here to the BNC jack on the KXV3. This creates the opportunity
to do
*very* wide spectral sweeps, if required -- limited only by the
bandwidth of the K3's band-pass filters.

As some (armed with spectrum analyzers) have noted, this output
signal
includes the usual spectra one would expect from a high-level
mixer.
(And it *is* a very high-level mixer.)

A mixer's output includes a broad range of products relating to
the sum
and difference of its inputs (RF and LO). It also includes
products
derived from harmonics of the sum and difference, etc.
Collectively,
these will appear as a comb pattern on an analyzer. This is
why the
mixer must be followed by band-pass filtering. (In transmit mode
this
function is performed by the K3's narrow ham-band band-pass
filters; in
receive mode, by the I.F. crystal filter and DSP filtering.)

But the buffered I.F. output is at a different point in the
signal
chain. So any filtering needed for a panadapter must be included
either
in the panadapter itself, or in series with it. Some panadapters
will
require no filtering at all, while some will need various
degress of
L-C filtering (the L-C filter used on our I.F. noise blanker is
a good
 starting point).

If you were only interested in a narrow band sweep, you could
use a
ceramic or crystal filter. Our FM crystal filter, at about 13
kHz wide,
would be a good choice here.

Excellent shielding should be used, and possibly additional
buffering,
to prevent re-radiation of 8.215 MHz back into the K3.

A related topic is the exact frequency of the buffered I.F.
output. It
is nominally 8.215 MHz with our 8-pole filters, and typically
0.8 to
0.9 kHz lower with our 5-pole filters. In addition, the portion
of this
passband actually present at the audio output is determined by
the DSP
controls (SHIFT, WIDTH, etc.). We can work with panadapter
suppliers to
provide this data via the RS232 port, and of course any future
Elecraft
panadapter would also have this information available.

I'll be adding this subject to the Owner's Manual. If you're
interfacing a panadapter to the K3 and have any further
questions, feel
 free to e-mail me directly.

 Wayne

I believe a similar article appeared in QST in the late 1960's.

Some time back, W3FQB (SK) wrote a story called The Man Who Broke The

Bank
about a techno-ham who built a fully automated SS station and proceeded
to

make an incredible score. The computer did everything - tuned across all

the

bands looking for new ones, called CQ, made the QSOs, kept the log,

decided where

the best points-rate could be found, etc. He just sat and watched it go,

and

occasionally keyed it manually just to have something to do.

The article was in QST for May, 1953.

Agreed, Bill. On other transceivers, I really do not need a second Rx as
long as separate b/w can be assigned to each VFO. I think a good op can
manipulate the VFOs every bit as effectively as one with two Rx -- and I am
by no means a great DX op.

This feature was a real benefit with the Ten Tec Omni VI/VI+ that the
current Omni VII lacks but should be incorporated in a forthcoming firmware
update. Without this ability, operating DX-split without the second Rx is a
pretty painful experience. I am pleased to hear this is already part of the

You can also lock VFO A independently of B so that you don't
accidentally move off the DX station. If I recall correctly, the
TS-930S would lock both A and B when you did this. Also you can
have different roofing filters on A and B (which track the WIDTH

If I recall correctly the K2 worked similarly...and much of

One possible explanation for what you are

[Elecraft] Mini-modules: New enclosures

2008-02-04 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
Hi all,

While working on a prototype enclosure for the HexKey, I ran into a couple
of problems and I am now waiting on some new parts to help out in the
effort. While waiting for the new parts (and my K3!), I decided to prototype
up an enclosure for the DL1 dummy load and the BL2 balun. I've used both of
these in portable/field ops and thought they would be good candidates for
housing in an enclosure.

You can see some pictures here:

I haven't come up with pricing info yet. I need to build a couple more and
get the timing down - I'm thinking somewhere in the $10 - $15 range.

If you are interested in any of these enclosures, please drop me a note. I
would like to know if there is enough interest for me to place these into
production. I also welcome any and all comments and suggestions regarding
the enclosures.

Thanks in advance 73,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - internal TX PWR meter accuracy?

2008-02-04 Thread Ken K3IU

Hi Glenn:

Without claiming accuracy to any traceable standard, I just fired up my
trusty old 100 MHz HP 1740A O-scope, calibrated the display to the
built-in 1 volt calibration standard, and measured the P-P voltage into
a 51 ohm resistance (no measurable reactance). At 100 watts commanded
and indicated on the K3 (#202), I measured about 202v P-P. That
translates to about 100 watts. With the K3 set for 120 watts, I measured
about 220v P-P, which is about 119 watts. With the K3 set for 90 watts,
I measure about 192v P-P which is about 90 watts.

So... I would say that the K3 does a pretty good job in producing the
commanded power.

Just curious here. The K3/100 is advertized as a 100W transceiver (or
should that be 100W class?) and the power control on my unit goes up
to 120W. With the PWR cranked up to 120W the K3's bargraph meter does
indeed show 120W output. The only external measuring tool I have is
one of those cross-needle meter (Daiwa CN801H) which I know displays
the output power a few % low into a known good dummy load but I've
never been in a position to accurately determine just *how much* low.
The Daiwa's spec sheet mentions 10% FS excursion error so that would
translate into a 20W uncertainty at the 200W meter scale setting.
Any input would be much appreciated. I know that there will be no
discernible difference on the receiving end when going from 90W to
110W but as they say... inquiring minds want to know.

I guess this is a tool for those who either only had
to pass a 5 wpm CW test or none at all. Now they can
QRM the low end CW portions of the bands by pushing a
button and letting their radio send 599 or some
other programmed response that they couldn't do with a
key. It's rather sad.

Using N8LP's LP-100 (factory calibration) after calibrating at 50W per the
manual:

BandMax Power (set to 120W)

160 110.0
80111.7
60112.8
40105.0
30111.9
20111,7
17110.5
15109.7
12111.1
10106.9
6 109.7

Power accuracy is better than 5% at any frequency from ~1W to maximum, 3%
typical with NIST traceable factory calibration

Yes, I know I can flip A/B, tune and then flip back, but I'd prefer not

What I described previously allows you to tune QSX with the large knob.
Touch REV and, while depressing it, tune the large knob to the QSX
frequency. Release REV it to listen on the DX frequency. With a little
practice you can do this with one hand. I normally use my left index finger
to depress REV and my pinky tunes the large VFO knob. Been doing this since
1984 with the TS-930S so it's second nature to me now.

Upon release the RX goes back to VFOA.

You depress REV (between A/B and AB) and VFO B is momentarily displayed (as
long as you hold REV). This is similar in function to the T-F SET button on
the TS-930S if you've ever used that. One nice feature is that you can set
different bandwidths for A and B so you can listen to the DX with a narrow
setting and tune for callers with a wide setting. If you are as accustomed
to doing this as I was with my TS-930S, it's *almost* as good as having a
Sub receiver.

If you could get double the power out with the same battery voltage you

You would get less operating time on the 3.5AH battery when running at the

I agree with your calculation if you use the same battery chemistry.
I you compare a lead acid battery with a Nicad or NiMh battery it is probably
a different thing. You should never deep discharge a lead acid battery. They
don't live very long if you do it. On the other side NiCad should not be

So the real-live capacity of a battery is not written on the label in my
experience - it depends on many factors like current draw, temperature,
battery chemistry, quality of the build

[Elecraft] K3 - internal TX PWR meter accuracy?

2008-02-04 Thread ON4WIX

Hi group,

I was just wondering if anyone has done TX power measurements with precision
measuring gear and compared these measurements against the K3's internal
indication of the output power?
Just curious here. The K3/100 is advertized as a 100W transceiver (or should
that be 100W class?) and the power control on my unit goes up to 120W.
With the PWR cranked up to 120W the K3's bargraph meter does indeed show
120W output. The only external measuring tool I have is one of those
cross-needle meter (Daiwa CN801H) which I know displays the output power a
few % low into a known good dummy load but I've never been in a position to
accurately determine just *how much* low. The Daiwa's spec sheet mentions
10% FS excursion error so that would translate into a 20W uncertainty at the
200W meter scale setting.
Any input would be much appreciated. I know that there will be no
discernible difference on the receiving end when going from 90W to 110W but
as they say... inquiring minds want to know.

Hi John,

Remember that in a rig like the K3 or Orion, roofing filters do NOT
determine ultimate selectivity. Their purpose is mainly to prevent
strong signals from entering the IF chain and causing IMD or BDR
problems. W2VJN of Inrad says the main area of interest for roofing
filters is only about -30 dB down on the skirts from the center
frequency, so there is really not a significant difference between
5-pole and 8-pole (remember that all of Orion's filters are 4-pole).
In other words shape factor and ultimate selectivity are not critical
for roofing filters.

What you are really asking is what the DSP filters look like, which
actually determine ultimate selectivity. I have not seen any
measurements of these yet but I'm sure someone will eventually post
measurements of them.

Here's a simple block diagram to remember:

Antenna 1st IF roofing filters 2nd IF DSP filters
Roofing filters prevent IMD BDR from entering IF chain
DSP filters provide ultimate selectivity

[Elecraft] K3 SSB average power output

2008-02-04 Thread mark roz
With SSB mic level adjusted to the max level (ALC to
the max)the average power measured on external meter
is only 4 Watts with distorted audio (power output set
at 110W). If I use external compressor the average
power is still only 4 Watts. This is done with CMP
gain at zero. This is not normal. Contest or ESSB guys
will not like that.
With K3 compression to the max average power is about
8 Watts.

K3 is a great radio but not in the transmit SSB mode.
If Mic gain is adjusted properly so there is no
distortion than the average power is even lower.

I'm sure that this could be improved in firmware.
If not than K3 would not be that good in the contest
and Dx -ing on SSB
Anybody has the same experience?
I remember that Toby from Bavarian DX Club and some
other guy was talking about SSB audio.

I'm not complaining but I would like to have SSB
signal comparable to radios like TS850, Ft1000D and so
on.
I hope that Elecraft will put this on their agenda.

Beside that, K3 is superb TRX-the best.

My only rationale in choosing the 8-pole over the
5-pole filters is it costs more, therefore it's (likely)
to be better. A very scientifically based decision.

The cost difference isn't worth the wondering; Would

RE: [Elecraft] K2 - hang up problem

2008-02-04 Thread N2TK
Well, I got my K2 working again. Don't understand why, but it is working
fine.

My K2 sits on a XV50. I had unplugged the 12V to the XV50 to use the 12V
line for the K3. It turns out if I unplug the 12V line to the XV50 I also
need to disconnect the RS-232 line between the K2 and XV50, even though the
XV50 is not ON. Then the K2 works fine on SSB (it always worked fine on CW).

If the 12V power is plugged into the XV50 the RS232 line does not matter
whether it is plugged into either the K2 or XV50 or both. But if the 12V
power is removed from the XV50 the RS232 must be removed so the K2 works on
SSB.

Maybe over a beer I need to look at the schematics to see what this is all
about. As always, ideas are welcome.

Tnx for all the suggestions. Amazing how much help was offered.

How about those Giants!

Open the K2 top cover - if a KPA100, lay it on a box to the right of the K2,
but leave it connected.
Receive with the OP1 filter for now.
Then try to create the problem - when it occurs, it is time to take some
measurements.
Is RXS (U1 pin 21) high (5 to 6 volts)? It should be.
Are TXS (U1 pin 15), TXC (U1 pin12), and RXC (U1 pin 22) all low (near zero
volts). They should be.
If those signals are in the correct state for SSB (or RTTY) receive with the
OP1 filter, then the firmware chip on the KSB2 board is doing what it is
supposed to. If not, then there is some firmware fault or some signals are
not getting from the K2 to the KSB2 board.

If the signals are correct and the failure persists, then the task is to
follow those signals into the diode switches for the filter and try to find
what is bad. It could be an unsoldered or poorly soldered connection. You
may want to reflow the solder on all the diodes near the filter and the
R-paks too.

Since last week I have the same problem with my K2 # 703 on all bands,

i.e. receive and transmit in CW is perfect, receive in SSB and data

modes is okay, only if I push the MH2's PTT key in LSB, USB or data

mode and let the K2 go back to receive, the receive signals are much

weaker than before (typically from S9 before keying the PTT to S1

afterwards). I can only get back to normal reception by switching bands

or by switching the K2 off/on.

My control board firmware is 2.03d, and the KSB2 firmware is 1.07.

I have already resoldered the sockets of the firmware chips on the

control board and the KSB2 adapter and reseated U6 and U1, but the

problem persists with both the 10W K2 and the KPA100/KAT100-2 (in

EC2 enclosure) attached.

[Elecraft] K3 SSB average power output

2008-02-04 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
Hmmm.

If I have my K3 set to 5.0 watts, my external watter shows ~3.5 watts
average and ~4.0 watts peak. Changing the pitch of my voice (as
expected) also changes the power. Those measurements are with a long
HELLO.

At 100watts set point, PEP = ~ 70watts and Ave = ~ 60 watts.

No, it's not like cranking in the PROCESSOR on my TS940 (which really
can hang it up there), but it's not 4 watts.

Obviously, YMMV

[Elecraft] K3 SSB Audio Issue

2008-02-04 Thread T. David Yarnes

Hi All,

I have had something rather strange occur a couple of times.
While I don't get on SSB very much, I have been chatting
with my friend Jay, W5JAY, on 40 meter SSB on occasion.
Typically he has indicated that my audio sounds excellent.
However, a couple of times he noted that my modulation went
south, and sounded like I was transmitting through a
narrower filter. This occured most recently the other
evening. I had not changed any settings that I know of.
However, the fix seemed to be to go to the TX Filter
setting (which was set for the 2.7 khz filter), and simply
rotate the dial to another filter and then back to the 2.7
khz setting. That's it! The problem was solved. My audio
returned to its former excellent state. Anyone else had
such an occurance?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB average power output

2008-02-04 Thread W6NEK

Hello Mark,
From what you describe, something is very wrong with either your K3 or your
external watt meter setup. How much power are you reading with your
external watt meter when the K3 is set to 100 Watts in CW Mode? Is your
watt meter a peak reading meter (I assume not)?

I am using an external Telepost LP-100 Digital Vector Watt Meter. With my
K3 in SSB mode (with power set to 100 watts and zero compression) I'm
reading 106 watts peak and 40 watts average power into a 50 ohm dummy load.
There is no distortion heard in either the K3 Monitor or in my nearby
IC-7800 receiver. If you are only getting 4 watts output average then
something is very wrong. Perhaps you can describe your setup for us. I
assume you completed all the calibration procedures, transmitter gain
calibration, etc.?

What you describe is certainly not normal from what I am measuring with my
K3 and watt meter set-up.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB average power output

2008-02-04 Thread Toby Deinhardt

Hallo Mark,

Are you sure that something else might not be wrong or configured
incorrectly? Are you sure that your measurement of the power levels is
correct?

There may be some interaction between the WMTR xxx and the TXG VCE
configurations, leading to low SSB output, but I really, really am not
sure about this. This evening, while experimenting with TXG VCE gain
values, the K3 appeared to loose its WMTR HP and/or TX Gain calibrations
in SSB a couple of times. I ended up with a TXG VCE of +1.0dB.

While Ben, DL6RAI, and I do feel that the speech processing is not quite
as effective as we would like, and that the average power level is a bit
on the low side, we have not seen anything like what you are reporting.
My K3 can and does produce a good quality SSB signal, which could be
improved (made more effective) for use in some special situations.

A clean rag chew modulation, will always show a lowish average power
because a moderate level of AF gain combined with low levels of
processing, will cause fairly little change to the natural dynamics of
speech. The K3, imho, is very good at this, i.e. clean, low distortion
modulation with an almost natural sounding dynamic range.

Natural sounding modulation is not always what you are looking for in a
contest situation. If I think in terms of an analog system, I'd really
like to really overdrive the K3 (gain and processing) and then carefully
back off to the point where the level of distortion becomes acceptable,
while maintaining a fairly high average power. The K3 (almost) does not
allow itself be overdriven, which most of time is a good thing.

This does not, of course, have anything to do with the peak power level,
which would be the same in the above scenarios.

I would like to point out two final things: We in Bavaria are still
learning about this radio, so we may be doing the K3 an injustice, and
because things like speech processing are done with software in the K3,
the firmware can improve these kinds of aspects.

Fwd: Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB average power output

2008-02-04 Thread mark roz
My mistake. Sorry. I should be more precise.

I should point out that I was comparing to FT1000D.
Never mind that my meter is showing 4W. Every meter
will show different average output power.
And yes I have two peak power meters.
Am I correct if i say that peak power meter will show
let say 100W with 3dB and 20db compression.
That tells me nothing about average power and I'm very
interested in average power in SSB.
That is what makes signal stronger at the receiving
side.
If we are interested in just peak power than why
bother with speech processors.

Anyway here is the comparison:
FT1000D 7W CMP off 30W CMP ON
K3 4W CMP off 20W CMP ON

MIC: HC5 and Goldline PRO
And yes both TRX peak power was set at 90W.
K3 peak power on 20m 90W with TXGN at 3dB. On CW 120W.
All what I'm trying to say is that perhaps K3 SSB
signal could be made more dynamic.

Mark

[Elecraft] WB3AAL FYBO Report

2008-02-04 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

Saturday February 2nd was a very interesting day. I went out to one of my
spots on the Appalachian Trail in PA to operate the FYBO contest. I got to
lot to find it heavily encrusted in ice. I parked the car and very carefully
got out and started to get the backpack on. I almost fell 2 times while
gearing up. I even had my cramp ons on my boots but they were of very little
help. The area of the Appalachian Trail I was at is a very rocky trail, the
cramp ons did help a little but hike was still very treacherous. I had very
serious doubts if I was going to be on the air at all that day. The hike
that usually takes 15 minutes now took 35 minutes.

I finally arrived at my operating location. I had to find an area where I
could drive a small ground rod into the stony area to support my vertical.
After trying for 10 minutes I finally found a spot and got the antenna
erected. I finally got on the air about 40 minutes later than I plan to be.
But all good things take time.

I started out on 40m and found the band had a lot of signals all over the
place. Unfortunately they were taking part in the other contest that were on
this past weekend. I did make a few QSO's on 40m but I decided to try 20m. I
made a lot more contacts there. I did try 15m a couple of times on the top
of the hour. I did call CQ for 10 to 15 minutes the three times I was on the
band. There were a lot of signals on 15m but down around 21.030 and nothing
up in the QRP area.

My Log:

trying to find out if my ground radials were edible. They were around for
about 45 minutes. I also noticed that my body heat was melting the ice
around me and I was slowly sinking into the ice. I did have a small portable
chair and table. I had to watch that my black coax did not melt down into
the ice and freeze when the sun did peek out for about 10 minutes..

This places my Appalachian Trail QSO count at 921 and closing in on the
1,000th QSO from the trail.

Thanks to all those that did make a contact with me and sorry to those
signals that were too weak for me to pull the out of the QRN.

Until the next time I go out on the AT.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but if you have a standard tower computer,
there are RS-232 PCI cards available which give you 2 or 4 true serial
ports, and they are pretty cheap.

My Ham Station computer is a Shuttle about the size of a shoe box, which
came with one serial port. I added a card for two more serial ports and it
also has two USB ports rear and two on the front, as well as a 1 Gigabit
Ethernet card on board. All the connectivity you could need.

[Elecraft] Wrong Filter Question - 8 pole vs. 5 Pole Filters

2008-02-04 Thread Lee Buller

I asked the wrong filter question...or...what was on my mind and how it came
out my fingers did not jive.

Which is better a 5 pole filter or an 8 pole filter. Supposedly the 8 pole
would have sharper skirtsand for only 20 more bucks...wellI would like
to know the difference between the two filters. Is it worth the 20 bucks? I
am sure it is, but as you all know there is some economic rumbling and need to
watch the pennies.

This is not about costit is about what is the difference between the two
types of filters.

[Elecraft] K3 SSB average power output

2008-02-04 Thread Bill Tippett

N8LP's LP-100 has a function for evaluating
Peak to Average performance of speech processors. SSB
isn/t of much interest to me until 10 meters comes back
so I haven't played with this mode in the LP-100. Larry
has a K3 on order and maybe he will compare the K3
speech processor to others when he gets his K3.

73, Bill W4ZV

See LP-100 at http://telepostinc.com/

* Peak to Average ratio screen. Allows accurate checking
and setting of compression in your speech processor.

Peak-to-Average Mode
This mode lets you determine the average power in a signal by taking
40,000 samples/second, and compares this to the peak power in
the signal. The result is displayed as a ratio in dB. I provide a
couple test tones, which are available on my website at
http://www.telepostinc.com/Files/two-level-tone-loop3.zip and
http://www.telepostinc.com/Files/loud_tone.zip. The loud tone is used to
set the maximum power and proper ALC range (with processing OFF). The
two-level tone is used to determine the peak-to-average
ratio of the output signal. It can be played back on your PC, or
converted to mp3 and played on a portable player. It can be played over
a speaker into the microphone, or directly into the mic input. The
two-level tone provides alternating loud and soft tones with 20 dB
difference in level. This tone should provide the following
Peak-to-Average ratios vs. effective compression ratio.

Compression Ratio Peak-to-Average Ratio
0dB 5.2dB
5dB 5.6dB
10dB 3.6dB
15dB 2.2dB
20dB 0dB
I plan more test tones with different characteristics in the future,
which is why I decided to keep the display as Peak-to-Average as
opposed to Compression, which would only be accurate with one test
signal. I will provide additional tables such as the one above with

the additional test signals

Re: [Elecraft] Wrong Filter Question - 8 pole vs. 5 Pole Filters

2008-02-04 Thread drewko1
I'm guessing that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, like
monster cable for the stereo. Will there ever be an instance when I
will say, Boy, if only i had an 8 pole filter; I might have snagged
that rare DX station! I doubt it.

Actually, if it had been a choice between 8 and 5 in a 500 Hz filter,
I might have chosen the 8. But I don't want a 400 Hz filter however
many poles it has; I want 500 Hz. This has to do with the fact that in
a hypershphere of very high dimensionality nearly all of the volume
lies very close to the surface. Just kidding. The filter graphs mean
next to nothing to me.

I guess when it comes time to sell the rig the 8-pole guys will have
an advantage over us filter ignoramuses and cheapskates. Anyhow, the
price difference between the is now $40 for me according to the order
summary.

You should receive an email acknowledging your order. (At least I
received one for my order.)

The status page you have heard of is probably the now famous (or
infamous?) shipping status page:
http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_shipping_status.htm

It will give you an idea how many months you have to wait to get your
own K3. You will quickly see that it says, New K3 orders are now
targeted for May delivery. Keep in mind that that is just an
estimate. While the Elecraft guys are great at designing radios, and
great at customer support, they have had some problems recently with
forecasting the future. You can get an idea about some the problems by
noting the comment on the KFL3B-FM filter, and Wayne's note on the
delay of the KRX3.

I will point out once again that Elecraft have improved their shipping
rate vs. orders invoiced, by orders of magnitude during the last
several months. If you are in a similar industry and/or understand
small companies, you may actually appreciate this and the difficulties
they have gone through. If not, too bad for you.

Everybody wins now. This is a good thing. :) Live long and DX! This
may well be the best radio you've ever been the owner/operator of!

The thing people forget is that YaeComWood, TenTec, etc have much deeper
pockets and more resources. Borrowing a few million for them is no big deal,
but a substantial risk for a company of Elecraft's size. If a product does
not do well, there is less impact on the bottom line. The other companies
also have many more models to spread the pain over, as well as other
divisions that can contribute resources to development. You don't generally
hear about a product too much until it is ready to launch, and units are
already built and often on the way to dealers. You also get them with all
the warts that were deemed not worth fixing right away, as the early
adopters can beta test. (Just a generalization, not aimed at any specific
company) Sure there have been manufacturing problems, etc. Since they don't
own the plant, but have to contract it out, a lot of control is lost.
Elecraft's high standards are not easy to meet, causing further delays.

If I had the money in May or any time after, I would have gladly paid a
deposit and waited. (I know, easy for me to say) I seriously considered
liquidating my equipment to do that very thing, but did not. In hind sight,

[Elecraft] K3 AM SWL - Stock 2.7 Filter

2008-02-04 Thread Don Rasmussen
Have the KBPF3 and only have the stock 2.7 roofing
filter?

You can listen to AM SWL using sideband, but then it
sounds like sideband. Very good sideband, but very non
AM like.

Or you can buy the AM filter. I am waiting for an FM
filter, it seems resonable that it should be good for
AM receive, and at bandwidths greater than 5 khz.

For now, here's a way to listen to real AM with your
stock K3, and it sounds excellent as well.

1. Enter a frequency for example 5.883.95, then AM.

2. The K3 will go silent, not finding a filter for the
AM mode.

3. Press CONFIG, dial VFO B to FL(n) BW.

4. Press XFIL until your 2.7 filter is selected.

5. Tap Menu.

6. Use the LO cut to reduce to .10 use hi CUT to MAX
of 3.1

7. Find a strong AM broadcast, it will need to be S9
or better to blow by the 5 pole filter. ;-)

With a 40 meter dipole at might most of the signals
are S9 or better without the preamp.

Tune the signal carefully for fidelity and the filter
is just not a problem. The K3 sounds as good on AM as
I've heard on any other amateur radio. Part of this
may be the RX EQ (main menu) where you can have band 3
(the lows) set to maximum, also bands 5, 6, and 7
raised, suit to taste.

The K3 will not use the 2.7 filter for AM the next
time you power up, but everything else can be saved in
a memory, just perform step 3 to call in the filter.

This radio (K3) is s flexible, just an incredible
platform.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AM SWL - Stock 2.7 Filter

2008-02-04 Thread David Cutter

Don

You mention blow-by to receive strong AM signals. Is the amount of blow-by
covered by the specs? I'm concerned about receiving on 40m here in Europe
where nearby broadcast stations are way above anything amateurs receive
within other bands.

Have the KBPF3 and only have the stock 2.7 roofing
filter?

7. Find a strong AM broadcast, it will need to be S9
or better to blow by the 5 pole filter. ;-)

With a 40 meter dipole at might most of the signals
are S9 or better without the preamp.
