Why do you want a 6kHz bandwidth in CW? Most of us would find listening to
CW with a pitch of that pretty well impossible. Or maybe you are using it
with your PC soundcard with programs like CW Skimmer? (of which I have
strong views which I won't repeat here...). Here I never use a filter any
wider than 400Hz on CW, except very occasionally 1kHz in contests so I here
people calling off channel. In normal use there really is no need for
anything wider.

Does anyone own -either- an M2 6M5X or a Directive

Re: [Elecraft] Alternatives to PowerPoles?

2008-04-12 Thread George Marr
Alan most Molex connectors are designed for price. They are ok for 15 to 25
in/and out connections. You need a mil spec connector to hack the job long
term. No connector lasts forever unless you never touch them. Let me put it
more accurately, if you pay less than ten bucks for the connector, plan on
replacing it in the long haul. Connectors and sockets are a large part of
the cost of any manufactured project

1) Anderson PowerPoles can be configured to be gendered, though the
"Ham Radio Standard" configuration did not choose to do this.

2) I have used the Molex since Heathkit days. Lots of them. They are
just plain unreliable in the longer term.

3) PowerPoles can easily be locked together when desired, but having
them pop apart easily is often preferred. It is up to the user this
way.

4) PowerPoles are not ideal, but they are the best thing going at this
time in the cost and performance category.

Show us better alternatives.. 12V 30A rated, low cost, low loss,
polarity protected, physically small, cable and chassis mount, readily
available, rated for lots of connect/disconnect cycles, easy to
install and plug/unplug.

Re: [Elecraft] antennas

2008-04-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Shaun,

It all depends on your entire NVIS antenna system. A quarterwave
radiating element needs another quarter wave wire as a 'radial' or
'counterpoise' (the quotes are intentional). So, you end up with a
total of 1/2 wavelength in any case.

Why are you concerned about a reflector for an NVIS antenna - the earth
itself can serve as a reflector. A dipole on 80 will be longer than
your available space, but then it can be bent drastically and still
perform quite well. For NVIS, try a regular dipole mounted 10 to 15
feet above the ground - check it with an antenna analyzer that trim to a
resonant length. Even though it may have to bend substantially, it
should work fine once tuned to resonance. For 2 band use, use a
separate radiator length for each band and run the two antennas at right
angles (or as close to right angles as your physical constraints
require) to each other - feed the center with a common feedline and use
it - it may not be ideal, but it should work for you.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

Good Evening,
Four days with no snow! The last two days have been 60 degrees or higher

I just went out and told my flowers the bad news. One of them was brave
enough to start turning yellow. The others just grew a few inches in the
warmth and sunshine. Hopefully they will survive the coming week.
Twenty meters was very good this week. I had a couple contacts into the
Southeast in the mid-afternoon. It was pleasant to be able to converse for an
hour with a friend of mine. Assuming those properties hold until tomorrow
evening we should have good luck gaining check ins. Cross fingers here. I did
try forty meters a few evenings and was awarded with an answer to my CQ each

form from an active region at high latitude.

Wayne has said publicly that both FM and wider AM (to 5 or 6 KHz
audio response - 10 to 12 KHz IF bandwidth ) is coming in the next
version.

The firmware under test increases the IF response to 10 kHz bandwidth.
bu the AF response is still only about 4 kHz. AF response will
(eventually) increase to about 5 kHz, but not 6 kHz.

The unequivocal answer is - it will work but with only 3KHz
audio under the current firmware (DSP ver 1.58). My factory
built K3 was delivered with MCU 1.78/DSP 1.58 and the FM
filter). With the current public firmware, FM is not functional
and AM audio is limited to 3 KHz (even with the FM filter).

Wayne has said publicly that both FM and wider AM (to 5 or 6 KHz

Thanks, that answers the question unequivocally. That means that it has
merit
to open up the radio and install the general coverage option and the FM
filter without waiting for the back-ordered 1.8kHz filter. I assume they
mean business when they say that filters have to be installed ordered by
bandwidth wide -> narrow, so I have to move lone 2.7kHz filter installed
now. Is it OK to leave the 2nd slot open, just in case I find that I have to
install the 6kHz at some later stage?

John,

The resistance of the choke is quite small in comparison with the 1k
resistor that you should be able to measure the choke with the resistor
in parallel. BUT if you want to check the resistance of the resistor,
it would be necessary to disconnect one end because the choke would
predominate the measurement. You may want to review the ARRL Handbook
or other resource for information about paralleled resistors.

Hi

The short answer is - YES

I have the FM in slot 1 but do not have the AM filter. I have the 2.8 Khz in
slot 3 and the 400 hz filter in slot 4. I get 3 KHz bandwidth with the FM
filter on AM broadcast stations. If I crank the bandwidth above 2.8 Khz the
K3 switches to the FM filter but it is limited to 3 KHZ with the current

Not just cw Steve - ssb rx bandwidth adjustment is currently restricted to
4Khz max.

It's likely that these bandwidth restrictions will be opened up in future
firmware (really).

Re: [Elecraft] 6 khz cw question

2008-04-12 Thread n4lq
Oh yes...I want to hear as much bandwidth as possible partly because it's my
temporary cure for no bandscope and partly because I just like a wide open
sound when working around the shack. The sound of QRN and all the cw signals
is more relaxing than listening anything I know of, shrill pitches included!
I see no reason for Elecraft to have deliberately restricted the bandwidth
in CW mode only.

Surely no one would want to listen to a pitch as shrill as that given
by a signal farther than 2.8 KHz from the BFO, or to a signal on the
other side or zero beat, depending on how the passband was shifted.
I'd find it rather irritating.

It's rumored that the 1.8 kHz filters should arrive from the manufacturer by
the end of the month. Then, there will be lead time for mounting on PCBs
and testing. I may have a couple of them available for sale in early May as
well.

An easy way to set up your filters correctly & quickly is to go into the K-3
Utility, go to configuration, click edit crystal filters, once there make
your edits and click ok and it will make the changes right away to your rig.

Do you have FL1 (6 kHz) selected for CW mode in the filter parameter in
CONFIG? When the FL1 parameter is selected in CONGIG and you are in CW
mode, it should indicate 'YES' rather than 'NO'.

For TX, use only the 2.7 or 2.8 kHz filter for CW, SSB and DATA modes.
Selecting any other TX BW will generate a TXF error on transmit. Wayne may
broaden the choices for TX filter bandwidths in the future, and if anything
the CW TX bandwidth choices will be lower, not greater.

[Elecraft] Vacation tasks ...

2008-04-12 Thread Norm Duxbury
I, too, hear the "clicky noises," but using cw with PTT (rather than QSK).
I use 400 Hz filter, AGC-F, and an external keyer.

The cw Monitor audio level could be increased to match the receiver audio
capability. I am using 8 Ohm headphones, which may be part of the problem
(the manual recommends 16-Ohm minimum impedance for headphones).

I am using the Heil FS-2 foot switch which keys the Alpha 99 amp PTT relay a
fraction of a second sooner than the K3. I had planned to key the amp from
the K3 KEY OUT jack. But when using the latter configuration, I can hear
the amp vacuum relay keying as if in QSK. This can be distracting when one
wants a steady keying condition to the amp from the K3.

I am building my K3 kit and currently installing the KBPF3 module.

Can I use a regular 40/60 tin/lead solder to repair this broken lead, or is
it necessary to use lead free solder ?

Re: [Elecraft] Low battery on K2 without battery

2008-04-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Scott,

What does the K2 internal voltage (tap DISPLAY) read? How about during
transmit too?
If it is substantially lower than the voltage at the power supply, look
for a problem with the power cord or the connections to the supply or
even with the supply itself - substitute a charged automotive battery or
a gel cell for the supply as a test.
The voltage will normally be 0.2 volts lower than the supply because of
the series protection diode, so more drop than that is significant and
indicates a bad connection somewhere.

[Elecraft] K3 MARS opening - experince?

2008-04-12 Thread Alexandr Kobranov

Hello friends,

You can reply off-the list if you suppose it is not so interesting for
the rest of list.

Thanks,

P.S.: If MARS mod is working correctly the only "Auto CW" option
missing to be fully happy ;-)

Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft napsal(a):
We'll make it available on request to K3 owners. They can just email
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with their name, K3 s/n etc.

Its complete now, but I'm waiting for Brian, our s/w engineer on this
project, to rebuild it with the same installer we use for the K3
download routine. He should have it ready this week.

The native VB6 installer we built it with initially keeps wanting to
install newer system files when we run it on W2000 and some other OS's.
We don't want to saddle users with that (and it doesn't always work).
That's why we're converting it to the same installer as K3 Utility,
which does not do this. :-)

This is a run once utility.

Re: [Elecraft] no side tone on K2

2008-04-12 Thread OE5CSP-Chris

Don:
After much backing and resoldering, I finally got my K2 on the air. (The
problems were popped then mismatched finals.) Unfortunately, the side tone
has stopped working, either in setting the tone or level from the menu,
transmitting or in the test mode. I can get power out on key down, just no
tone.

With key down, there is no ac voltage out of pin 4 of the DAC(U8) on the
control board or at the drain of Q5. There is 5 V dc on pin 1 of U8. I
assume that U8 is bad, but before I attack this chip, is there anywhere else
to look?

 Joe,

When I built the Kat 100 I also needed a firmware upgrade(U8). I got a
faulty one-no sidetone any more- Elecraft sent me a new one and everything
was fine again.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 KPA100: Cannot Adjust tPA, Stuck at 0C

2008-04-12 Thread Ian Greenshields
 Hi Don, all,

Thanks for the help & suggestions. Pin 5 of U1 is 0.6v but CAL tPA cannot be
adjusted. Looks like the MCU on the KPA100 is faulty. I've ordered a new
 one.
