Re: [Elecraft] Alternatives to PowerPoles?
Alan most Molex connectors are designed for price. They are ok for 15 to 25 in/and out connections. You need a mil spec connector to hack the job long term. No connector lasts forever unless you never touch them. Let me put it more accurately, if you pay less than ten bucks for the connector, plan on replacing it in the long haul. Re: [Elecraft] antennas
Shaun, It all depends on your entire NVIS antenna system. A quarterwave radiating element needs another quarter wave wire as a 'radial' or 'counterpoise' (the quotes are intentional). So, you end up with a total of 1/2 wavelength in any case. Why are you concerned about a reflector for an NVIS antenna - the earth itself can serve as a reflector. A dipole on 80 will be longer than your available space, but then it can be bent drastically and still perform quite well. For NVIS, try a regular dipole mounted 10 to 15 feet above the ground - check it with an antenna analyzer that trim to a resonant length. Even though it may have to bend substantially, it should work fine once tuned to resonance. For 2 band use, use a separate radiator length for each band and run the two antennas at right angles (or as close to right angles as your physical constraints require) to each other - feed the center with a common feedline and use it - it may not be ideal, but it should work for you. 73, Don W3FPR Shaun Oliver wrote: Hi all, at the moment, I have a piece of wire running straight into the back of my radio as an antenna. assuming I have my lengths and what all right, could I not use this here piece of wire to tx? or, am I running the risk of exposing myself to more rf than perhaps I should? [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, Four days with no snow! The last two days have been 60 degrees or higher with sun. However, the forecast is for snow and freezing rain starting Monday. I just went out and told my flowers the bad news. One of them was brave enough to start turning yellow. The others just grew a few inches in the warmth and sunshine. Hopefully they will survive the coming week. Twenty meters was very good this week. I had a couple contacts into the Southeast in the mid-afternoon. It was pleasant to be able to converse for an hour with a friend of mine. Assuming those properties hold until tomorrow evening we should have good luck gaining check ins. Cross fingers here. I did try forty meters a few evenings and was awarded with an answer to my CQ each time. Things are looking up. I see the second sunspot in cycle 24 may just form from an active region at high latitude. Right now, I believe that the firmware does not allow the CW bandwidth to exceed 2.8 KHz in RX. This may be changed in future firmware upgrades. 73, Ken K3IU n4lq wrote: I understand how to use the menus. Let me restate. It's rumored that the 1.8 kHz filters should arrive from the manufacturer by the end of the month. Then, there will be lead time for mounting on PCBs and testing. An easy way to set up your filters correctly & quickly is to go into the K-3 Utility, go to configuration, click edit crystal filters, once there make your edits and click ok and it will make the changes right away to your rig. Do you have FL1 (6 kHz) selected for CW mode in the filter parameter in CONFIG? When the FL1 parameter is selected in CONGIG and you are in CW mode, it should indicate 'YES' rather than 'NO'. For TX, use only the 2.7 or 2.8 kHz filter for CW, SSB and DATA modes. Selecting any other TX BW will generate a TXF error on transmit. [Elecraft] Vacation tasks ...
I, too, hear the "clicky noises," but using cw with PTT (rather than QSK). I use 400 Hz filter, AGC-F, and an external keyer. The cw Monitor audio level could be increased to match the receiver audio capability. I am using 8 Ohm headphones, which may be part of the problem (the manual recommends 16-Ohm minimum impedance for headphones). I am using the Heil FS-2 foot switch which keys the Alpha 99 amp PTT relay a fraction of a second sooner than the K3. I had planned to key the amp from the K3 KEY OUT jack. But when using the latter configuration, I can hear the amp vacuum relay keying as if in QSK. This can be distracting when one wants a steady keying condition to the amp from the K3. 73, Norm - W1MO K3 #426 (AGC mod done at factory) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Low battery on K2 without battery
Scott, What does the K2 internal voltage (tap DISPLAY) read? How about during transmit too? If it is substantially lower than the voltage at the power supply, look for a problem with the power cord or the connections to the supply or even with the supply itself - substitute a charged automotive battery or a gel cell for the supply as a test. The voltage will normally be 0.2 volts lower than the supply because of the series protection diode, so more drop than that is significant and indicates a bad connection somewhere. 73, Don W3FPR Scott McDowell wrote: Hello For some reason the low battery messages keeps poping up on my K2 in the receive mode. [Elecraft] K3 MARS opening - experince?

They can just email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with their name, K3 s/n etc. Its complete now, but I'm waiting for Brian, our s/w engineer on this project, to rebuild it with the same installer we use for the K3 download routine. He should have it ready this week. The native VB6 installer we built it with initially keeps wanting to install newer system files when we run it on W2000 and some other OS's. We don't want to saddle users with that (and it doesn't always work). That's why we're converting it to the same installer as K3 Utility, which does not do this. :-) This is a run once utility. 73, Eric WA6HHQ Thom LaCosta wrote: What's the status of the utility that was mentioned to open up the K3 for transmission on MARS/CAP frequencies? Unfortunately, the side tone has stopped working, either in setting the tone or level from the menu, transmitting or in the test mode. I can get power out on key down, just no tone. With key down, there is no ac voltage out of pin 4 of the DAC(U8) on the control board or at the drain of Q5. There is 5 V dc on pin 1 of U8. I assume that U8 is bad, but before I attack this chip, is there anywhere else to look? Joe, When I built the Kat 100 I also needed a firmware upgrade(U8).
