Re: [Elecraft] OT: fan control in MFJ-4225MV switching P/S
As I'm not a very technical person I just used a couple of resistors in parallel to slow the fan down in my 4225. I can't remember the values this early in the morning but it seems to be working just fine. The supply does run a little warmer but not hot and the fan is no longer heard. Bill NZ0T Nick-WA5BDU wrote: This could almost be on topic, as the desire to control the fan in my MFJ-4225MV P/S is associated with my acquisition of a K3. There was recently a discussion of switching power supplies for the K3 on the list. I thought the MFJ unit was quiet while others found it to be noisy. After the noisy fans in my FT-1000 and in my old PC left the shack, the MFJ P/S did become the loudest box in the vicinity. I had a sense that the P/S didn't really need that continuous fan activity, especially during low duty cycle operation or just listening. So I put a temperature sensor on a heat sink and use it to turn the fan on and off via a comparator circuit and MOSFET switch. I think it's going to work out pretty well. Of course, the simple circuit could be used on any P/S that runs the fan all the time but doesn't really need to. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Beta Software Download Problem
I finally decided to try to download for the first time the beta software for my K3. So the problem begins. When I copy and paste the URL for the download into my browser I eventually get an error message internet explorer can not display the webpage just like I would expect if my internet connection was down. So do I have something not turned on for this download maybe? Are you using a router maybe? Or a wireless access point that is doing NAT? Take a look at the advanced tab of the internet options settings in IE, whatever the IE version you are using. This would be Tools - Internet Options. Make sure the passive mode has a check in it for FTP. Close IE, re-open it, and see if it's working now. Often times, active FTP mode won't work behind a router or access point, or for other reasons. Let us know if this fixed your issue. And, as was mentioned up the thread, IE (and Firefox, for that matter, even with add-ons) are poor excuses for FTP clients. There are lots of free alternatives out there that will do a lot better job of doing FTP file transfers. You might want to install one of these FTP clients on your system. Re: [K2] [Elecraft] KNB2 vs. electric fence.
Good Day to all, I have had prior problems with my neighbors electric fence used to contain his horses. I don't have much experience with the NB in the K2. i am using the K3 which does a wonderful job. I guess the first thing I would do is make sure the interference you are hearing is in fact the electric fence. Do this by isolating all of you equipment from your shack power source. If the problem persists, then I would turn off all power to your house and check if the problem is still there. If so, it is time to go mobile or portable with the K2 and an AM receiver. I think though I shoud first confirm that the fence is your neighbors or is it yours? If is your neighbors, I would suggest contacting them and nicely explaining the situation. When I did this, my neighbor was very cooperative. i explaind it as MY Problem and asked him for permission to access his property to explore for the problem. In my case the fence was located across the street and kiddie corner , approx. 500' away from my house. The fence covers appox. 5 acres. I found that the problem was somewhat weather dependent. An example was just after a good rain it would really take off. It seemd as possibly some large field grass or weeds would touch the fence and act as an antenna. Upon investigation, I found that the fence was badly neglected and had several open portions and very poor grounding. I asked my friendly neighbor to disconnect power from the fencing unit and guess what, the interference vanished. I then asked him if I could make some repairs to the fence and excplained my intentions, which I might add quickly included purchasing at my cost, a new electrice fence module. I proceeded the jump all connections that were hanging open in the fence circuit as well as remove the existing the grounding system which i might add consisted of a piece of 24G wire that was spliced several times terminating to nothing more that a large screwdriver that was shoved into the ground. This was all replaced and neetened up, and terminated with a nice new and shiny 8' ground rod. I plugged in the new power unit to see if all my efforts were helpful. To my amazement the problem was completely gone. Oh I forgot to mention, also pay close attemtion to all splices in the fence as well as the gate hooks that are sometimes used. The can arch over and act as quite the spark gap transmitter. I hope this gives you a place to start. Please reply with any further questions. 73's Mike N8XPQ Joe Planisky wrote: Hey folks, I've recently started picking up relatively strong pulses at 1 second intervals on my K2. Should the KNB2 noise blanker be effective against this type of noise? I've always thought that such impulse type noise was exactly what noise blankers were supposed to work best on, but I hear no difference in the pulses whether the NB is on or off, nor at high or low threshold settings. This is making me question whether the NB is working at all. Any thoughts? 73 -- Joe KB8AP ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 - Strange problem on 10 Meter SSB with power out
If this has previously been discussed - please forgive me. This weekend ten meters was open (as much as it could be at the bottom of a cycle) and the 10-10 contest gave me a great opportunity to try out the 10 meter band on my recently completed K3 #1318(latest firmware). All seemed well until I noticed that my power output on SSB was down as indicated on the K3 power meter and where I normally see 100 watt pep output on my tuners average reading meter. So I grabbed my Bird 43 (with PEP option) and a dummy load. Sure enough, only about 50 watts PEP even though the control on the K3 is at 100? Placed the K3 into tune and 95-100 watts out? Go back to SSB and now the PEP power is back where it should be at approx 100 watts PEP. After a few more SSB transmission - low power again(still connected to the Bird and dummy load). This went on for a while as I checked and re-checked all of my mic and comp settings. All other bands worked correctly. Power supply not current limiting, all connections/cables good (connection to my stati o! ! n ground verified), fresh battery in my studio mic, SWR on ten meter antenna below 1.4:1 etc. etc. Took the LPA heat sink bottom cover off to make sure the LPA transistors were making good thermal contact. (I had added a spot of heat sink compound to each transistor during my assy process) There was a clear outline of the TO-220 transistor and an even film of compound indicating good pressure and contact. Put everything back together. Haven't seen the issue again - yet? But I am not convinced I did anything to make it go away? Anyone else had this experience? Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Strange problem on 10 Meter SSB with power out
I saw the same thing too. The problem seemed to be on the other bands also. I got about 70w out but had to turn the mic gain all the way up. This isnt right to have to hit it this hard to get output. I had a local listen to the signal and until the mic gain was all the way he didnt think I sounded normal on the audio. TX VCE was turned up to 2 and then 3 without any difference. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ( or K2 ) with a Kenwood SM230 station monitor
Hi Guys: UNfortunately, I have the SM220, which is a bit different from SM-230. I use my SM-220 ONLY for monitoring the RF output from my station. Period. However, if I recall, both the SM-220 and SM-230 have some provisions for displaying the IF output from a receive IF that IF output has been properly converted to the input of the IF input section of the monitor. I cannot say whether either of these monitors would be worthwhile for the displaying of a usable IF output from the K3. You'll have to get that info from someone much more knowledgeable than I. However, I cannot recommend these monitors highly enough for helping to keep track of your transmitted signal. I've had an output RF monitor for the past 40 years and cannot imagine operating my station without having one available. They have found 'problems' I'd probably never have noticed had I not had one available. 73, Tom Hammond N0SS At 14:56 08/02/2008, Timothy Raymer wrote: Keith, I know Tom, N0SS, has has an SM-230 in line for quite some time. The Kx is pretty good about not making ugly electrons, but the amplifier you drive over the edge could. The other thing I remember about the SM-230 and Tom's station is that it induced some strange SWR issues by the time we got up to 28Mhz. Combination of lengths of coax, impedance of the unit itself, and a few other oddities caused a bit of a problem for a contest a few years ago. Gary and All, Very innovative idea Gary. However, the bad news is that such an offer would be made to more than the de minimis number of buyers, you'd be offering across state lines, etc., and therefore require registration with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission)! Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Strange problem on 10 Meter SSB with power out
I have been having a similar problem on 30m through 160m. Output is fine on CW on all bands. On SSB, I am gettting only about 50 watts on those low bands. Re: [K2] [Elecraft] BAND+ push button failure...
Switches do fail, especially if only taking a light current. Advantest spectrum analysers were famous for it. You might try some switch cleaner but replacement may be the only option if the switch is sealed. The other possibility is the solder contacts have failed somewhere through repeated flexing. This may well be completely invisible on inspection. The cure is to re-melt the solder on all the joints. The most likely contacts are those on the switch, but also check the multiway headers. I normally push the button horizontally, that is towards the rear of the rig. The tap/hold function works every thing if I press vertically towards the bottom of the rig. That makes me suspect the switch is going bad. It doesn't explain why the problem just started after my other volume control mod. I will probably order some switches from Elecraft and see if that fixes it. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Beta Software Download Problem
Hi All, I similarly decided to get brave and try downloading a beta version. I was a bit nervous about it, particularly as I had brought the wrong USB/Serial adapter with me to where we are spending the summer. I wasn't sure it would work as well as the Belkin I had been using for downloads. Anyway, I took the leap, and somehow I got it to work just fine. I was never sure I had done everything correctly as far as setting up the separate folder, etc. But apparently I did it more or less correctly. The download went without a hitch, and the K3 accepted the update smoothly. I may be imagining this, but the audio output seems stronger with this latest update. The noise reduction is working very well too. I think I'm happy! Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Strange problem on 10 Meter SSB with power out
The problem has been consistent across many configuration changes. TUN PWR is set at 100, though I tried it at several settings. Power-per-band is not active. To test, I use the built-in 2-tone generator that you can enable in the configuration menu. That is very handy for testing audio modes. CW provides full and measured power across all bands. On 6m through 20 meters there is full and measured power on voice and data modes. On 30m - 160m there is approximately 50 watts on voice and data modes. Measuring PEP with a scope at the input to the roofing filters with the 2-tone generator and TUNE selected shows approximatey 4V peak on the higher bands and approximately 2.25V peak on the low bands. Given that the regular oscillator in the K3 is better than many if not most amateur radio HF transceivers, I do not believe you will see a noticeable improvement with the higher quality TXCO. As far as I know the typical HF user will not notice any improvement by having the TCXO in standard (sane?) operating conditions at HF to 6 meter frequencies. So in short, the stock K3 is more than adequate for PSK-31 operating. The stock XO is +/- 5 ppm (0-50 C) TCXO standard (@49.380 MHz). The upgrade is to +/- 1ppm. The average user won't notice the +/- 4Hz improvement. I believe many users would have issues accurately calibrating their K3 to +/- 1ppm. As far as I know _reception_ of WWV/CHU's HF (or WWVB LF) signals are not that accurate. A GPSDO (GPS disciplined ovenized oscillator) would be typically used to in that situation. My understanding is that beside amateur metrologists (e.g. time-nuts), and the typical users of the upgraded TCXO are microwave perhaps mobile/rover VHF operators who use transverters to multiply the K3 HF output to the higher operating frequency, where you want minimal error (i.e. drift, jitter) in the K3's oscillator, because this error will be magnified (multiplied) by transverter as well. -Michael, VE3TIX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The low pass filter! Why didn't I think of that! I don't have my K3 yet but I did the 6 meter mod for my Butternut vertical and built a 3E yagi for 6 to be reay for K3 6M operation and was wondering why I had to plug the coax straight to the IC-706 bypassing my antenna switch and tuner to get a decent SWR.. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Strange problem on 10 Meter SSB with power out
If you experience this problem (low output on SSB), please check if the other sideband works OK, and note if you are using the 2.7 kHz 5-pole filter or the 8-pole 2.8 kHz filter. Re: [Elecraft] OT: fan control in MFJ-4225MV switching P/S
That's a pretty good solution. When I was making measurements I noted that when I turned the supply voltage down to the 10 to 11 volt range the fan got very quiet. In fact, I was going to forget about the thermostatic control solution. But when I put the cover on, the noise worsened quite a bit at the same voltage. Pulling air through those case perforations seems to do it. Since the K3 is spec'd for 11 to 15 volts, I wanted to run at a little over 14 V or so. The fan really gets noisier as voltage climbs, so I definitely needed either the resistor solution or fan control. 73- Nick, WA5BDU NZ0T wrote: As I'm not a very technical person I just used a couple of resistors in parallel to slow the fan down in my 4225. Re: [Elecraft] OT: fan control in MFJ-4225MV switching P/S
The cool (pun intended) way to do it is to use a thermostat wired in parallel with a resistor in series with the fan. The fan only runs at full voltage when the heat sink gets hot. Another way is to use a thermistor and amplifier to gradually turn up the fan voltage as things warm up. The main concern is to be sure that the fan still turns on reliably with the resistor in series. I would test to find the largest resistance that allows the fan to start and use no more than half that value, to allow for changes in fan characteristics as it ages. [Elecraft] Kenwood SM230 station monitor
Note that the thru put power of the SM 230 is stated as ONE Kilowatt, not 1.5 or higher. SM-220 sez 1.5. I had some problems pushing FULL power thru an SM 230, but not any problems with the SM 220. 73, Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2008 08:53:40 -0500 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; elecraft@mailman.qth.net From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 ( or K2 ) with a Kenwood SM230 station monitor CC: Hi Guys: UNfortunately, I have the SM220, which is a bit different from SM-230. Just keep in mind when you put it in line you may need to shorten or lengthen the coax runs a bit to get things happy. Good luck, and enjoy the SM-230. [Elecraft] Re: K3 question--TCXO or another filter?
The difference between TCXOs is 4ppm not 4 Hz. The standard TCXO can be +/- 250 Hz at 50 MHz, the optional one can be +/- 50 Hz at 50 MHz or perhaps +/- 25 Hz once the firmware is changed to allow the supplied calibration table to be used. Using the optional 1ppm TCXO in my K3 results in a typical accuracy of within 20 Hz at 50 MHz, under normal shack temperatures. I run a home brew GPS derived standard for calibration purposes. The K3 is one of the few transceivers that can be adjusted for frequency without taking a cover off or needing a trim tool, it can be easily calibrated every hour, every day or whatever - if that's what floats your boat. Whether you need the higher accuracy is only something you and your wallet can decide. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 - The average user won't notice the +/- 4Hz improvement ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
