Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3 Audio

2008-08-08 Thread Andrew Forrest

Alexandr Kobranov made an interesting post showing a spurious response
in the line out audio

I just made two basic samples using K3 and TS-850 using Firebox
   external soundcard and Winrad SW.

You can see screenshot from K3 line-out audio on

   http://www.ok1kei.org/K3_audio/line_out_firebox_winrad.jpg

This is K3 with 400Hz roofing filter on some stable carrier.
LINE OUT setting on level 9.

Looking at the plot the spurious cannot be harmonics because the
frequency scale of the ghost response is the same as that of the normal
response. It is not doubled or tripled as would be the case with
harmonics. I posted similar results in March which I noticed using PSK
on a computer. Quoting myself:

   The second thing I am
noticing is ghosts in the waterfall display of MixW. I assumed that I
was driving the audio card too hard and getting harmonics, but this is
not the case. The ghost signals do move faster across the waterfall
   than
the tuning rate implying harmonics but I can decode the ghosts, so the
bandwidth of the ghost signals has not changed which it would do with a
harmonic. Ghosts are about 20-30db down on the correct signals

It appears that this effect is nothing to do with clipping or
transformer saturation but some kind of mixing. On the positive side I
have not manged to make a ghost appear in the passband where it would
damage the decoding efficiency, although it may still be there under the
noise. This is an unusual effect that I have not seen before. Anybody
any ideas of how these ghost signals are being generated?

[Elecraft] Paddle for K3

2008-08-08 Thread alsopb

There has been much talk on the mike to use for the K3

What paddle to use is also a fitting topic.

I'm using what seems to be a perfect match for an Elecraft rig. It is a 30

I would not have thought the same potential for incompatibility existed with

hammer finish base matches the K3 paint colour perfectly.

Both the Elecraft Hex Key and the Brown Brothers BTL-A paddles work great. I
like the stability of a paddle that has little or no vertical movement of
the paddle arms. The Hex key is heavy but the Brown Brothers is easier to

Re: [Elecraft] Paddle for K3

2008-08-08 Thread n4lq
There is an impedance mismatch between the Elecraft Hex Key and the K3
causing it to produce a ghost signal on harmonically related bands. I
believe this is a firmware bug in the paddle and am asking Elecraft to look
into this at once! I have tried to download the latest beta firmware for
this paddle from the FTP server but my Macintosh which runs Firefox ver.
br549 begins to send alternate dits and dahs. I am upset over the total lack
of support here.
BTW: I find that my Windom antenna works better on CW than on SSB. Could
this the short and long halves of the antenna be the cause?

[Elecraft] K3 Receive audio in CW

2008-08-08 Thread THOMAS BAILLIO
I've had the K3 for 4 months now, but I'm new to the list. So, forgive me if
this has been discussed previously here.

Overall, it's been a great rig and I'm encouraged by Elecraft's commitment to
firmware upgrades.
However, I see few minor annoyances with the K3 receiver and I wonder if others
are also bothered by them:

- First of all, in the prescence of summertime QRN the receive audio is a bit
harsh. Static and noise in general seems more bothersome with the K3. Lowering
the CW pitch, applying IF shift and reducing the width (the 400 Hz hard filter
is installed) all seem to help by lowering the noise spectrum, but don't really
mitigate the problem. Applying RCV-EQ doesn't seem to help. It almost seems the
noise is aliased.

- With the antenna removed and the input grounded or terminated, the background
(audio) noise on all bands seems unusually high.

- Also, with the S-meter configured for absolute and no antenna, the S-meter
shows a 1 to 2 S-unit background level increase when ATT is enabled. I expect
this is simply a software calibration issue.

Well, yes, here's why! You'll find that if you switch to ALT in SSB the
Windom performance matches that on CW. Likewise, if you switch to CW REV
mode, the Windowm performance is down. This is of course, determined by the
polarity of your Windom feedline (whether the coax center or shield is
hooked to the longer side of the Windom). This effect can be equalized
slightly by using balanced feeders.

[Elecraft] K3 Programming - equalizer menu settings

2008-08-08 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC
I would like to be able to GET and SET the individual equalizer settings for
SSB, ESSB, and RX.

Will the MN command be expanded to GET (now SET only), and include the 'sub'
entries for the equalizer bands? Or will the DS command be expanded to
include the B display as well?

Or... am I missing an incantation that allows this now???

THANKS!!

Well, yes, here's why! You'll find that if you switch to ALT in SSB the
Windom performance matches that on CW. Likewise, if you switch to CW
REV

the

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Receive audio in CW

2008-08-08 Thread Brett Howard
I've found that playing with the AGC SLP and AGC THRESH settings has really
helped me out in this arena. I found that especially with the narrower
filters that I was having this issue. You also want to make sure that you
don't have too much additional gain thrown in for your narrower filters.

My rig is at S0 with no antenna input and the noise is very reasonable. I
did have similar problems and concerns about my rig and the AGC settings
have helped me in this area. I set the two main AGC settings into my PF
buttons and have found that they are useful for allowing you to make changes
to better fit band conditions as they change.

One thing I'd like to see is that instead of PF1/2 only taking you to one
menu item it could take me to the menu at the item of my selecting. That
way instead of having to put AGC SLP one PF1 and AGC THRESH on PF2 I could
just use AGC SLP on PF1 and then THRESH is just one click of the VFO B knob
away. Then I can setup another area of the menu into the PF2 button. I
wonder if I can use bank 2 of the M1-M4 buttons as separate quick jumps and
still use the main bank for CW memories... Guess I'll try that when I get
home.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Receive audio in CW

I've had the K3 for 4 months now, but I'm new to the list. So, forgive me if
this has been discussed previously here.

Overall, it's been a great rig and I'm encouraged by Elecraft's commitment
to firmware upgrades.
However, I see few minor annoyances with the K3 receiver and I wonder if
others are also bothered by them:

- First of all, in the prescence of summertime QRN the receive audio is a
bit harsh. Static and noise in general seems more bothersome with the K3.
Lowering the CW pitch, applying IF shift and reducing the width (the 400 Hz
hard filter is installed) all seem to help by lowering the noise spectrum,
but don't really mitigate the problem. Applying RCV-EQ doesn't seem to help.
It almost seems the noise is aliased.

- With the antenna removed and the input grounded or terminated, the
background (audio) noise on all bands seems unusually high.

- Also, with the S-meter configured for absolute and no antenna, the
S-meter shows a 1 to 2 S-unit background level increase when ATT is enabled.
I expect this is simply a software calibration issue.

Performance with my K3/100 has been flawless. Kit building experience

[Elecraft] K3 AGC Settings Tutorial

2008-08-08 Thread Lyle Johnson

BACKGROUND

There has been a lot of confusion about AGC in the K3. Some of it is
AGC related, some of it is AGC interaction with noise reduction (NR).

A later email will address the noise reduction issue. For now, let';s
look at the AGC apart from NR.

---

WHY DID THE AGC CHANGE?

WHen we interoduced the HAGC mod a few months ago, it increased the
dynamic range of the radio before Hardware AGC (HAGC) kicked in. HAGC
is there to protect the analog to digital converter (ADC) from
over-range. The mod required that the DSP AGC cover a wider range.

It turned out that the DSP AGC was not doing the job it was intended to
do on these stronger signals. We were receiving a steady stream of
complaints about loud signals being almost painful to K3 operators using
headphones. IF flat (SLOE=15) was selected it worked fine, but other
settings resulted in excessive signal strength.

The AGC control algorithm was recently changed to compensate for this
problem. At the same time, the AGC threshold range was adjusted to more
closely mimic earlier K3 AGC threshold behavior.

---

HOW SHOULD I ADJUST THE AGC?

For most of us, the K3 AGC is simply a matter of OFF|FAST|SLOW.
HOwever, many peopl prefer an AGC that starts on band noise; others want
it to start with a weak to moderate signal.

Some people like the audio level to be constant once AGC has been
activated' others want some sense of increasing loudness as the signal
strength increases.

Here is how I suggest you set the AGC for your needs.

1) CONFIG:TECH MD ON

This exposes the AGC parameters you can adjust.

2) CONFIG:AGC SLP 015

This makes the audio response flat once the AGC threshold has been reached.

3) CONFIG:AGC THR

Tune around and and adjust this to the desired threshold. A low number
means a weaker signal (or noise) will activate the AGC.

Note: THE AGC does NOT drive the S METER, so don't make the mistake of
conditioning yourself to look at S METER action and think you are seeing
the affects of AGC adjustments.

Note: Different bands and different days have different amounts of
noise. A noise QRN-filled summer noise level is very different than a
quiet winter evening's noise level. The AGC doesn't know the
difference, so it is up to you to change things if you desire different
thresholds on a seasonal basis.

4) CONFIG:AGC SLP

Now that you have the threshold chosen, tune across loud and weak
signals. Adjust the SLP parameter so that stronger signals sound louder
by reducing this value from 15. If you want everything to be flat
above the threshold, leave it at 15.

---

WHAT IS NEXT?

The changes to the AGC have not pleased everyone. We are embarking on a
modification and test program to further improve it. Watch this space!

---

AGC - OTHER

You can also adjust the decay rates for FAST (CONFIG:AGC F) and SLOW
(CONFIG:AGC S). Larger values indicate faster decay. The amount of
HOLD time that AGC SLOW uses before it commences decay is also settable
(CONGIF:AGC HLD).

Most people seem to be happy with the defaults.

Thank you for your patience and we continue to work to make the K3 YOUR
radio.

73,

Lyle KK7P

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC Settings Tutorial

2008-08-08 Thread AD6XY

Thanks for the explanation. As you say, noise levels differ between bands and
over time E.g. 80m in Summer compared to Winter or HF versus 50MHz and
higher bands via a transverter. Does the AGC setting apply per band or does
it cover all bands?

AGC also depends on mode, CW vs SSB bandwidths. Again, does it differ?

If so there will be an awful lot of tweeking needed for all possible
combinations.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 power setting for SSB QRP?

2008-08-08 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire

award to another.)

Yeah, it's generally around 5 Watts for CW and some allow it to go up
to 10 Watts for SSB, but some stay at 5 Watts even for SSB.

--

The 'normal' (if anything is normal about Ham radio) QRP power level has
been defined over the past half century by the QRP Amateur Radio Club
International or QRP ARCI.

Their bylaws, Article 1, section B states:

QRP operation for QRP-ARCI purposes is defined as operation with a
transmitter power output of 5 watts or less for CW (Continuous Wave - A1)
and 10 watts PEP or less for SSB (Single Side Band - A3J). QRP-ARCI awards
are based on these output levels.

Many contests and other organizations have followed these guidelines.

Bear in mind that what's considered QRP has changed over time. Back in the
1950's QRP was defined as 50 watts input to the final amplifier. That
normally resulted in between 30 and 40 watts RF output for a legal QRP
transmitter.

Times change, Hi!

The organized QRP movement began in the 50's as a rebuttal to the idea that
several hundred watts, perhaps even a kilowatt, was needed to really enjoy
Ham radio. A great many Hams ran 50 watts or less, and the organization
recognized their ability and the fact that they didn't need more power to be
very successful communicators.

In more recent years, my personal interest in QRP has not been in the low
power itself, but because that's where the bulk of today's homebrewers,
technicians and tinkerers hang out.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3 Audio

2008-08-08 Thread Alexandr Kobranov

Hello,

last test to test possible AGC influence on ghost signals is here

http://www.ok1kei.org/K3_audio/line_out_agc_off_500Hz.JPG

K3 has AGC OFF and signals are shortly invoked on/off by RF GAIN knob.
Line out is on 4, BW 400Hz (as roofing filter)
Spectrum is wider to see 500Hz original and then signals around 1.5,
2.5 etc kHz.

Without changing of soundcard input gain the same performed with TS-850

http://www.ok1kei.org/K3_audio/ts850_agc_off.JPG

Also AGC OFF and af signal invoked by RF GAIN knob.
There are no ghosts visible.

(please ignore some permanent birdies on both pictures, look for
signal on/off and ghosts on the right from original signals)

So as AGC was completely OFF, signal generator was used and in both
cases the same soundcard setting was used and the same SW, there is
probably some source of K3´s ghost signals in DSP demodulator itself.

Using so wide specrum (up to 5kHz) is only to illustrate how many and
where all ghosts are...

Hope somebody with less amateur approach can comment/explain.

[Elecraft] WB3AAL on the Appalachian Trail 10 Aug 2008

2008-08-08 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

Sunday 10 August 2008 I plan on going out to the Appalachian Trail.

This time I plan on having 2 antennas up to see how they work.

I plan to be at my operating site by 10:00 UTC. I will erect my BWV antenna
and I plan on placing a Super Loop 40 up in the air.

Since the weather is to be cool and possible thunderstorms in the afternoon
I am not sure how long I will be out on the AT.

I will take my K1 and I can operate 40, 30, 20 15m.

If anyone would like to make a schedule, please e-mail me direct.

72 and Thanks,
Ron Polityka

When you turn off the AGC, you are likely to overload the audio

be the K3, could be the sound card.

Without changing of soundcard input gain the same performed with

The second trace shows that the audio system is not being
overdriven. The difference could be nothing more than how levels are
set or how much gain there is between the detector and the audio

You've excited the audio system with a single frequency. If you
excited it with broadband noise, as I did, you would also see the IM

Many thanks to everyone who replied to my questions. Your comments were
very useful, and helped clear up many of the questions I had (even some
questions that I didn't ask!).

FYI, I decided to go with a K1-4, KFL1-2, KNB1 and KTS1. Since I don't
plan on backpacking with the rig, I decided to pass on the internal
battery pack and internal tuner, but did order the external T1
autotuner. Oh, I ordered the backlight for the LCD too.

Now for the kudos to Elecraft. I placed my order about 11am EDT
yesterday, and received my shipping notice just before 7pm that evening.

[Elecraft] K3 Auto Tuner

2008-08-08 Thread Gary Gregory
Hi,

Does anyone know if there are any future enhancements on the the list to
have the K3 auto-tuner work on receive?

I had this functionality on a previous rig and it would be a nice feature to
have again.

I don't want to add to any list, this is just a question. I feel that
Aptos have enough on their plate at the moment and there are other projects
yet to be done that are currently on hold till the list is reduced on the
K3.

It already works on receive. Its in-line for both TX and RX. If you have
tuned it up for a band it will be beneficial in RX too.

OF course, if you wish to tune it outside the Ham bands yo will need to
adjust it in manual mode via the menu.

K3-100 Kit, K3 ATU, K3 400 Hz. and 2.8 Hz. 8 Pole Filters, Universal Serial

Ordered late in the day on 3/24/08

Arrived in San Francisco today 8/8/08.

Katiegram was sent on 7/30/08 but was not received. Apparently there are
two databases involved at Elecraft. It seems that when I bought my KX1 #1403
I had a different email address. I had changed my email address at the
reflector but not with sales so I did not get my Katiegram. It just so
happens that on 8/05/08 I sent Lisa a note re: changing my credit card info.
She emailed me within the hour with the info I asked for and the info re: my
K3. I called her early the next morning (Wednesday) and she said it would
ship that day and be here by the weekend! It came today, Friday, August 08,
2008 at 3:40 PM.

So, 4 months and 2 weeks with the mix up re: my email address. As far as I
am concerned this is on time and as promised.

I hope to have it built and on the air for the SKCC WES!

Thanks to Lisa, Wayne and all the rest of the folks at Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC Settings Tutorial

2008-08-08 Thread Lyle Johnson

Thanks for the explanation. As you say, noise levels differ between bands and
over time E.g. 80m in Summer compared to Winter or HF versus 50MHz and
higher bands via a transverter. Does the AGC setting apply per band or does
it cover all bands?

AGC is AGC. It is not per band, it is per radio :-)

AGC also depends on mode, CW vs SSB bandwidths. Again, does it differ?

Use AGC OFF | FAST | SLOW

Most people prefer FAST for CW and SLOW for SSB.

If so there will be an awful lot of tweeking needed for all possible
combinations.

I do not know of a radio with per band AGC settings, or per season.
Most radios don't let you adjust the threshold or slope -- or the decay
rate of FAST and SLOW.

With the K3 we allow you to tailor the AGC; we don't require that you
tailor it.

Well, yes, here's why! You'll find that if you switch to ALT
in SSB the
Windom performance matches that on CW. Likewise, if you switch
to CW REV

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC Settings Tutorial

2008-08-08 Thread Tom W8JI
It is true that the AGC pertains to the radio and not the
band, but the optimal AGC threshold setting does vary by
band. On 80m, for example, I set the AGC threshold on my
Ten-Tec Orion at about 20uV. On 10m, where the noise level

fast, medium, and slow AGC settings, plus a custom prog
setting, and one can set the threshold, decay rate and hang
time independently for each speed. It is possible to spend
hours fiddling with the Orion's AGC settings.

One of the reasons you have to change it so much is any AGC
that has no effect at all until a threshold and then tips in
all at once is always critical to adjust. A good AGC system
has a slope rather than a hard threshold with no AGC at all
below a point, and then hard AGC after that point that
clamps the volume to one level.

At quiet locations the dominant noise is propagated via
skywave just like the desired signals. This means the noise
floor varies greatly with direction depending on propagation
or even the time of day. On the same band in different
directions the noise floor can vary 10 or 20 dB. This
requires constant adjustment of AGC threshold with any AGC
that tips in fully at a threshold.

AGC systems with a slope don't exaggerate the problem of
noise level changes and they don't muddy the signals into
one constant level or no AGC at all.

When I solid stated my R4C's I built a new AGC circuit. I
put a lot of gain in the AGC, there was very little audio
level change with input signal level change. On the bench it
was nearly perfect, once the AGC started working everything
stayed at nearly the same audio level. I worked to make it
have flat audio level with varying signal levels, textbook
perfect AGC.

Everyone hated it. It required constant riding of RF gain.
It made weak DX stations near noise floor muddy up or
vanish, and it was impossible to sort signals close in pitch
in pileups.

Decreasing the gain in the AGC circuit cured it, and it was
no longer necessary to ride the RF gain (same as adjusting
AGC threshold).

The K3 has an AGC SLP adjustment that cures this problem. I
was delighted to see the people at Elecraft included an AGC
slope adjustment, and that it works to make the AGC have
that analog sound operators here like for handling pileups
and for weak signals in rough noise. Unless you have an old
analog AGC system the slope adjustment is a must have
requirement. Especially for people who work pileups or work
DX that is in and out of rough noise like static crashes.

Although I just started using the K3, I really like the AGC
system so far. That's in contrast to other digital AGC
systems I quickly learned to *dislike*. Low band DXers or
contesting people will really like the slope adjustment
feature.

Real serious hams use Heil headphone/mic set.

Ideally have the 5 and the 4 elements switchable as

in one model Heil sells. All other discussions

of other choices are just for fun. 73

You must be kidding as real serious hams DO NOT use heil mics. They are
overpriced and have lousy audio. One gets much nice transmit audio using good
quality dynamic microphone rather than those cheap elecret cartridges.

2008-08-08 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
I have noticed this effect in recent beta firmware revisions as well. I
spent quite some time looking at a busy band and chasing ghosts
everywhere, trying to find out what was up. I searched the archives and
saw others had the same problem; the harmonics do seem to be recent, as
I've not been troubled by this effect before. Before I wrote I was
waiting to see if someone did just this experiment you describe.

One point: I have the HAGC mod on my desk still, though, so it's
possible, especially after Lyle KK7P's last email about the HAGC mod,
that my problem is related to the undone HAGC mod. However, if others
with more recent K3s have the problem, then it isn't just that.

I see the same extra stripe using mixw and an RF generator. I had to
turn down the line out of the K3 to 001 and crank up the sound card to
max inorder to eliminate it. The level is a bit weak now and needs
more gain. There is something not quiet right here.

I'm also not convinced that this particular screen shot is non-
linear distortion. It could be aliasing in the FFT software that's
part of the decoder.

On the other hand, the pdf below DOES show both harmonic distortion
and IM distortion on the Line Output when the Line Out level is set
too high (driving the transformer being driven beyond it's ratings).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microhpone

2008-08-08 Thread Gary Gregory
Fern,

My posting on Mics got some strange responses mate. I use an old Turner+2
(34 years old) and it gets perfect audio reports all the time.

I was following the posts on Mics so I thought maybe a Super Mic was a way
for Elecraft to increase sales.

Just imagine mate:
weight...4 Kilos (Heavy is good, if you throw it it won't go too far)

Switches on the base for:...1. ESSB On/Off
2. EQ ON/OFF (Flat or programmed)
3. Knob for Mic gain
4. Knob for compression
5. Locking PTT Button/Bar
GFVD display with ON Air illuminated when mic is activated
Firmware upgradable so we can change the element sensitivity

I am absolutely positive that I have missed some options we could have in a
Super Mic, perhaps the ability to change our voices so we sound like our
favorite celebrities?...Just think we could all end sounding like Donald
Duck, Bart Simpson?...scary stuff eh?

Anyway, not sure if my tongue in cheek post was well received or not, but I
was chuckling when I sent it out.

Cheers mate, keep posting, I get a huge kick out of reading the reflector,
plus, I am learning a lot from all you guys.

Cheers,
Gary

 Hi Gary:

Look no further as I've found that the Shure 444D is the ideal base
microphone for the K3 except for the fact that it does not have the UP/DOWN
keys feature. Now if you want a very nice sound dynamic hand microphone
with the UP?DOWN keys feature, I can help you out with this as I have stock
on those. They are originally made for a commercial land mobile radio but
the resultant transmit is equivalent to that of the Shure 444D desk mic and
that is without even having to use the 8 band transmit audio equilizer.

 Hello Again,

I agree with an earlier post from Steve. I will sit under my favourite Gum
tree in the back yard, under my nice 80M full wave loop and silently pray
that the gods at Aptos are reading these posts closely and that somewhere
 in
the dark of the night in Aptos an idea will be born to design, build and
market the perfect microphone for those of us who have a distinctly Non
Professional Radio Announcer Voice so we can be all happy little campers.

The K3 is now without a doubt the best TCVR on the market, we just need to
have a really good tailor made mic...oh..and while I am adding to the wish
list..can we have some knobs and buttons as well as a Locking PTT
Bar/Button on this (hopefully) perfect new base mic...Please..¿

OK, I will climb off my soapbox and journey down into the bomb
shelter..after I turn on my incoming missile deflector:-)
