[Elecraft] K3 Beta 2.32 - still having agc problems

2008-08-29 Thread Stephen Prior
Following from my troubles with unstable agc after going to 2.31, I tried
2.32, hoping that somehow the problem would be fixed. No such luck
unfortunately.

The symptoms, which appear with or without an antenna connected, and only
with agc switched on, are rapid excursions up to 20 to 30dB over S9 and the
consequent reduction in audio output. Reverting back to 2.23 completely
clears the problem.

I have cycled the power, performed an ee init, scratched my head etc etc.
Before I performed the ee init I saved the radio's config using the mac
version of the utility I have always used before but when I restored it
after the ee init I still had to go through the menu settings to get the
radio back to its original state- I don't know whether this has anything to
do with it.

Further suggestions are very welcome!

Use N3FJP ACLOG without issue. In the past I used some of his
individual contesting software. Now I use N1MM and sometimes MMTTY.
Only have an issue with MMTTY, that is more likely me needing to know
where to change a setting. All else has worked fine.

May I suggest the place for this kind of info is on the K3 Wiki at

I'm not saying it isn't of interest to members of the reflector, but
if put on the Wiki, it's there for all time and not spread across
posts here
And if people start complaining of bandwidth use here, you can just
maintain it there.

[Elecraft] K3 1544 is on the air!

2008-08-29 Thread Steve Ward
Well I couldn't help myself, and built my kit complete in one long
night. Total of about 6 hours including the KPA3.

Excellent documentation, I never had any question if I was doing the
right things. I was also impressed with the quality packing job...looks
like the box could have survived a lot more abuse without problem.

So far I've only made a grand total of one PSK contact on 40m but the
long weekend is coming!

As others have said, a lot to learn on this rig...first lesson, very
important to select the right sub-mode if you expect PSK-31 to work!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 LOGGING SOFTWARE

2008-08-29 Thread Julian, G4ILO

A fellow list member alerted me to the usefulness of the Eterlogic Virtual
Serial Port Emulator, which is freeware. He was using it to run CW Skimmer
and my logging program KComm simultaneously connected to his K3. I was
motivated by his endeavour to add support for CW Skimmer in KComm so the two
programs can now talk to each other. You can click on a station or a word in
the decoded text in Skimmer and it is transferred to the KComm log field and
Skimmer QSYs the radio to center that station in the filter passband. KComm
also color codes the spots in Skimmer to show if they are a new country, or
a dupe, etc.

The next version of KComm that I will release, probably not for a few weeks
because of holidays, will also have support for the Fldigi digimode program.
You will be able to run KComm and Fldigi both connected to the K2 or K3
using the VSPE. Clicking the QSY button in Fldigi will move the selected
datamode signal to the center of the filter passband, and the frequency
change is picked up by KComm. You enter the log information in Fldigi, and
when you click Save the entry is transferred to the KComm log, from where
you can export ADIF or Cabrillo files and get statistics.

I have been running the new Fldigi for Windows for a few days now and it
really is a most impressive program. It supports a fuller range of modes
than MixW, the main exception being SSTV, but it does not have much in the
way of logging capabilities. The integration with KComm remedies that, and
in my opinion the combination is a very desirable alternative to MixW.
Because KComm uses the identical log file format as MixW, there is no reason
for MixW users not to try it.

However, as I said, you will have to wait for the release of version 1.4 of
KComm for the Fldigi log communication. Under Linux KComm can already log
contacts saved in Fldigi, because it uses a different interface that is
already supported. But under Linux there is no way for two programs to share
a serial port (unless someone knows different) so you have to let Fldigi
control the radio and lose some of the KComm functionality.

I read on page 30 of the Rev. D1 manual that as the PITCH control is
adjusted, the peak in response of all crystal filters will track the
sidetone
pitch; no filter adjustments are needed. However, I'm wondering if the
DSP filters also track in the same way, given that the SHIFT function
now has a coarser reolution than the PITCH.

With regard to the rounding, of the SHIFT display, it seems that a
largest integer, or floor function was used to generate the display.
This is truncation, not rounding.

Re: [Elecraft] New K2 now!

2008-08-29 Thread David Wilburn
Your message reminds me of an important point. Set aside a certain
amount of time to work on the rig. For most people, more than 2 or 3
hours, and it is easy to get frustrated or make a mistake. This is an
important piece. If you are getting tired or frustrated, pack your
stuff up and walk away.

In the craft section of the department store, I picked up containers,
with lids, that had a bunch of little compartments. I sorted my caps
(lots of caps) into one of this, and resistors and other hardware into
another. All of the ESD sensitive items (chips, diodes and such)
stayed in their ESD bags. This allowed me to 'close up shop' so to speak.

You can start this sorting and setup now. Even reading through the
manual. All these little items pay big dividends latter on. 73 es
look forward to catching you a little further down the log.

2) How about concentrating on creating a rock-solid code base, with

from 150hz to 100hz. AFV readings go from 971 to 343 on a 50uv signal from
a XG-2. The 200hz filter is OFF. RX equalization is flat.

I believe this is new in 2.32 but wouldn't swear to it and, of course, I
trashed the prior beta firmware. Reloaded all firmware again this morning
and the effect is still the same.

Anyone else notice this? Thanks.

[Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware, Revision 2.33 (CW passband correction)

2008-08-29 Thread wayne burdick

Hi all,

Thanks for all the quick reports on beta versions 2.31 and 2.32. You've
caught a couple of things we missed, and we're making corrections and
retesting as quickly as possible.

2.33 corrects a DSP IF centering error that may occur in CW mode.

For full release notes and instructions on how to load beta firmware,

Also seems to have corrected a chirpy or plopping sounding
CW signal.
I have done some testing with N3JT and N3AM and I must say today
the CW from their K3´s sounded pritty good, just a very mild
key click on the break side but not objectional.
I´m looking forward to receive mu K3.

[Elecraft] v2.33 Beta bug at SSB-Filter shift?

2008-08-29 Thread DC1RS

When use the filter shift at either USB or LSB and return it to center
frequency it says FC *0.03, sometimes *0.04, *0.05 and *0.40.
All other positions are indicated correct and the received audio also sounds
ok at center position.

This is exactly what LP-Bridge is designed to do... allow integration of
K3, LP-PAN and a number of other simultaneous applications like loggers,
CW Skimmer, etc., as well as hardware that needs frequency data like

Many of use our rigs with contest software. Here are some
operating experiences which may be
helpful: Please report your own expereinces with other
software, so that we will not have to reinvent the wheels!!!

Using K3 with K1EA CT-DOS v 10.03: the following worked FB
Plain vanilla pc machine running either WIN98se or 6.22 DOS.
K1EA CT-DOS V 10.03, set COMTSR2 -b4800 active, choose TS940 as
transceiver and

in ct setup, comport2 = radio1, 4800baud.
Bandmap, band changes-from the K3 from CT all worked. Did not
check split freq operations.

lpt2 as keying interface with CT paralell port circuit worked fb
NOTE: I had no tnc and cannot vouch for point es shoot,
announcements etc

Using CTWin Windows op version of K1EA CTWIN:
PC: Dell laptop 840c, xp pro, with Prolific USB-Comport device as
comport3. Baud rate 4800

Transceiver TS940, setup: comport3 = radio1, 4800 baud rate
LPT2 as keying input
RESULTS: CTWIN worked fb EXCEPT entering freq on ctwin did not
change the K3
frequency but changing the freq on the K3 registered fb on ctwin.
Again no experience with a tnc, spot annoucements etc. I do not know
how to set up CTWIN for TELENET operations.

Using ctWIN IN WINDOWS XPPRO, K1EA CTWIN
PC: Dell840c laptop, Prolific USB-Comport device AND LP-Bridge
software from Telepostinc.com setting LP-Bridge Virtual Comport 1
with 1A option checked K3 baudrate set at 38400 baud.

LPT2 as keying input toctwin.
RESULTS: CTWin worked fb, could set K3 freq from ctwin, all else
as above.

This technique of using a Virtual COMPORT via LP-BRidge might be one
method of using both the LP-PAN panadapter AND a logging/contest
program simultaneously. NOTE there are 3 possible VIRTUAL COMPORTS
available on LP-Bridge software.

Others might relate their expereinces with other loggin/contest
software as well

Re: [Elecraft] New K2 now!

2008-08-29 Thread David Lankshear
Ed, I just noticed something different on a current KPA100 I'm building for
someone and it may be the same with your K2.

The KPA100 PCB is an ROHS one with soldering lands gold plated. I don't know
if that has anything to do with what I've noticed, but it's something I never
saw on the earlier roller tinned PCBs I've worked on - and there have been a
few!

When inserting a component after bending its leads, if the leads are scraped as
they are pushed into the plated through holes, sometimes a tiny whisker of
tinning is scraped off the leads. This could lead to shorts if left on the
board, so now after insertion and soldering, I check carefully around the lead
entry points on the component's side of the board and if I see a whisker, I
brush it off with a small paintbrush.

As for tools for the job, I find a small pair of Spencer-Wells forceps (artery
clamps, often used by fishermen to winkle the hook out of the innards of their
catch), a pair of good tweezers and also a thin rod of - almost anything - with
a blob of Blu-Tak (sticky stuff) on the end is so useful for swift retrieval of
items that think they've escaped the soldering iron.

Good luck with the construction, just follow the instructions and you'll have
something to be proud of at the end.

frequency it says FC *0.03, sometimes *0.04, *0.05 and *0.40. All
other positions are indicated correct and the received audio also sounds
ok at center position. I reloaded the firmware v2.33 again, still the
 same problem.
Is there anyone with the same problem?

[Elecraft] K3 MCU rev 2.33: SHIFT display issue in SSB mode

2008-08-29 Thread wayne burdick

I've corrected this and we're re-testing (again).

(I think I'm going to have to ask my XYL to turn off the TV so I can
concentrate better. It's been interminable presidential election

work at home)

[Elecraft] Cable for K3 Aux I/O

2008-08-29 Thread K8TB

Cable for the K3 Aux I/O

I found a source for cables for the K3 AUX I/O connector, which uses all
15 pins of a HD-15 connector. You can find many cables for the HD-15,
but almost all of them are for video extension cables. I found a source
of cables. They are made by L-Com (www.l-com.com http://www.l-com.com)
. They are available from Newark, and directly from L-Com. The part
numbers of concern are for a male to male cable. And why a male to male?
So you can cut the cable in half and have two cables, one for you and
one for your buddy, or your second K3!

The part number from L-Comm is CS2H15MM-5, for a five footer, (Newark #
is 88M8465), and the CS2H15MM-10, which is ten feet. (Newark # 30M8735).
I bought the five footer as Newark had those in stock. The cost is
around $ 27.00 each. L-Comm’s website shows their very own checkout
system. I called them and they do not have a minimum order, and they
take most credit cards.

So I cut my five foot cable into a four and one foot length. I found the
15 conductors surrounded by a foil shield, a drain wire for the shield,
and an overall woven out shield. The 15 conductors are all there. I
ohmed out the colors, and while they should be the same from cable to
cable, you might want to check out the color codes of your cable before
committing to these wires to your K3.

Pin # Color

1 Black (solid color)
2 Brown (solid color)
3 Red (solid color)
4 Orange (solid color)
5 Yellow (solid color)
6 Green, dark (solid color)
7 Blue (solid color)
8 Violet (solid color)
9 Gray (solid color)
10 White (solid color)
11 Pink (solid color)
12 Light Green (solid color)
13 Black with white strip
14 Brown with white strip
15 Red with white strip

I connected my cable to a captive wire barrier strip, plugged it into my
K3, turned off, but with 12 VDC power. I shorted the Violet wire, pin 8
(power on) to the light green, pin 12 (ground). My K3 turned on. This is
good news for me as my second K3 is at my 6 meter SSB remote site, and
these wires will be wired into a relay controller that comes off my
computer located there. Now, if there is a power bump, I don’t have to
make a trip up there!

Now, to convince L-Com to make a breakout HD-15 connector with captive
wire screws on it, like they do for the DB-9!

Thank you for your observations. We have confirmed this problem. It is
on the list of things to look into.

In the meantime, we suggest you use USB or LSB as a workaround for AM

This is NOT a good idea. First, parallel conductor cable is a lousy choice
where RFI is a potential issue. Most uses of the AUX I/O connector should
use TWISTED PAIRS for immunity from RFI and noise. In general, TWISTING is
FAR more important than a cable shield in rejecting RFI and noise. Second,
most uses of the AUX I/O connector will require only a few circuits, not
all 15 pins.

Thus, a FAR better way to do this is buy some DB15 connectors, some CAT5
(or CAT6), and some connector hoods and wire them yourselves. Use one pair
per circuit -- for example, for FSK, orange to pin 1, orange/white to pin
5; for PTT, brown to pin 4, brown/white to pin 5. And so on.

[Elecraft] K3 FSK RTTY

2008-08-29 Thread Jim Talens
I am having a problem getting my K3 working on RTTY in the FSK mode using a
serial-to-USB converter. Using MMTTY and not the Belkin (now unavailable)
converter, it just won't function, even with extfsk.dll installed. However,
it does work fine using COM1 and a direct serial connection to the K3.

When using COM8 and the serial-USB converter it does not work.

Most of the MMTTY information is somewhat outdated, perhaps, given the bulk
of information about it dates to 2005-2005.

What are others using to get going on FSK using a serial-USB converter?

Thanks!

[Elecraft] KRX3 questions

2008-08-29 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-655-8604
I've finally put the second RX in my K3 #22.

I have 2.7k filters with -0.86 and -0.87 offsets- have I ended up with
filters that are matched enough for diversity reception? The thought is
that it'd be useful to have two low-band antennas useable
simultaneously when on DXpeditions. I still need some 8-pole filters,
and my initial choices of 2.1kHz and 400 Hz seem to be slightly
suboptimal, so they may end up on the secondary market.

I only got a strip of foam for the bottom of the speaker, rather than
a square as shown in the KRX3 manual. OK?

I also added lock washers to my original KSYN to match the mounting
screw configuration of the secondary KSYN.

When you're traveling a lot, it's hard to keep up, so forgive me if
all of this has been discussed in the past.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 DSP

If you have the KRX3 option installed and enabled (through the K3's CONFIG
menu) it won't show N/A.

The K3 Utility Help file on the Firmware page says:

Installed in K3

Indicates the firmware versions installed in the K3 for each of these
processors. N/A indicates that the hardware option is not installed or has
not been enabled through the K3 CONFIG menu.

N/A means that the required hardware (in this case the Aux DSP board) is
not installed in the K3, so attempting to program it is N/A (not
applicable).

More accurately, it means the K3 has indicated to K3 Utility that the
required option is not present. It may in fact be present, but not yet
indicated as set in the K3's CONFIG menu, in this case CONFIG:KRX3.

Yes, but set them both to the same value. A 10 Hz error is not going
matter to the 2.7 kHz filter's passband response, but the 10 Hz
difference in offset may result in an annoying beat effect when both
receivers are tuned to the same indicated frequency.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware, Revision 2.31 - Remote ATU

2008-08-29 Thread Craig
I will vote for the remote antenna tuner and a Syllabic Squelch.

A syllabic voice squelch would be a nice feature to have on the K3. Most
commercial HF radios have these voice activated squelch circuits. They seem to
ignore and noise and static very well on SSB.

YES! We need a remote version of the KAT100. That would
 help improve
 a lot of signals.

[Elecraft] K3

2008-08-29 Thread Barry Simpson
Thank you to all who replied to my query regarding the DSP2 issue.

I have another question. Is there a menu or config setting which equalises
VFOB mode and filter settings (with VFOA) when doing the A to B VFO
frequency equalisation? That is a facility I would really appreciate for
quick split work in a pile up.

Hi Barry,

If you tap the A-B button *twice* (within a short period that I don't
exactly remember) then it will copy the filter and mode settings in
addition to the frequency.

Just press it twice. Pressing it once sends only the frequency if you
press it again in quick succession it copies the rest of the
information.

RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 questions

2008-08-29 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A
Lyle,

I can understand why the beat effect can happen at certain frequencies.
I read the message about the rounding errors.

My question is: can you give an indication of how often this happens. Of
course it depends on freq and filter offset but still, can you give an
idication how bad it is.
Anyone ?

Thanks.

Arie PA3A

-

I've finally put the second RX in my K3 #22.

I have 2.7k filters with -0.86 and -0.87 offsets- have I ended up with

filters that are matched enough for diversity reception?

Yes, but set them both to the same value. A 10 Hz error is not going
matter to the 2.7 kHz filter's passband response, but the 10 Hz
difference in offset may result in an annoying beat effect when both
receivers are tuned to the same indicated frequency.

Lyle KK7P
