[Elecraft] K3: Audio Blast attack
Steve, I'm just wondering if you use RX EQ with large gain settings. As I recall, the K3 cancels those gains with the two narrowest Width settings (i.e., 50 and 100 Hz). This might account for at least part of the large increase in gain that you experienced when you opened up the Width control. 73, Chuck NI0C K2/10 s/n 5853 K3/100 s/n 1061 N4LQ wrote: I had the width down to 50 hz then I hit the FIL button to open things back up again and that's when it happened. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] NR AGC
When I tune K3 to the carrier wave signal of a AM broad casting in LSB mode, and then press NR, the AF output of K3 turns very very loud. AFV display will turns from 1xxx to 5xxx when DSP is activated in this situation. Description above is is a simulation of receiveing a sharp SSB signal in the real QSO. When receiveing a sharp voice SSB signal with DSP on, AF output can be extreme loud. Re: [Elecraft] K2 U10C Oscillating
David, The LMC660 op amp can have a tendency to oscillate when driving a capacitive load (see the LMC660 datasheet) although it is normally stable in the K2. Before replacing it, try the following steps - check after each one and stop if no oscillation. 1) Flush trim the leads of U10 and the nearby R-Paks. 2) Use a cotton swab and alcohol to clean any flux residue from the area of U10, RP2 and RP3. 3) Try adding a 10 pF capacitor between U10 pins 8 and 9 If the oscillation persists, replace U10. 73, Don W3FPR DAVID POWELL wrote: On my K2 (#3014) I hear signals and noises while tuning across 160m with the antenna disconnected. The worst is a strong but unstable signal that moves from about 1850 kHz to about 1910 kHz during about 15 minutes after I switch on the radio. I accidentally traced the signal to U10C on the control board: the signal jumped when my finger got near the left end of resistor pack RP2. (U10C appears to be a buffer for the V BIAS-XFIL line.) The signal is several kHz wide and resembles hash from a dimmer or switching power supply. I have verified the U10 circuit resistors and voltages as nominally correct. U10D, an identical circuit for the V BFO line has pretty clean dc at its output. Has anyone else seen this? [Elecraft] K3 control hold?
Wayne, et al, Is there any way to have a continuous display of one of the functions adjusted by the 4 multifunction knobs, e.g., power, mic, width, etc.? The other day I was making amplifier adjustments and had to keep adjusting the power knob. I would have liked the display of power on VFO B to remain on, rather than reverting to the normal display after a second. Similarly, if one is making audio adjustments, it would be convenient to have comp or mic be on continuously. Assuming this can't be done now (or am I missing something obvious?), then one way to do this would be to add a CTRL HLD function to the various displays that are accessible on VFO B when the DISP button is pressed. Then perhaps the most recently adjusted knob parameter should remain displayed until another such knob is turned, or until the DISP is changed. This might be a Tech Md On function. 73, Andy, AE6Y __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] OT: Diode snubbers
What kills solid state PN junctions is excessive power dissipation (heat). You can abuse the breakdown voltage of a PN junction as long as the power dissipated there is within the power dissipation range of the PN junction. That's how Zener diodes work and it is why they have a power dissipation rating. All diodes will function as low-current Zener diodes if you manage to provide a high enough reverse voltage across them to break them down and limit the current so the power they must dissipate won't destroy the PN junction. An ordinary 2N can be used as a low-current 7V Zener if you reverse bias its base-emitter junction. Relay kickback energy is a function of the relay coil size, applied voltage, coil resistance, and relay coil core permeability (determines how fast the field can collapse thus the max voltage the thing can make with no coil current flowing). A very large coil will have a lot of energy stored and all of that must be dissipated when the coil is de-energized. A forward-biased diode must burn off that energy that is not dissipated in the coil winding resistance (and core losses). If there is too much power applied to the diode for too long, the diode junction will melt and then it electrically shorts or opens, depending on luck. The schematic of a diode is more than what we all see in application schematics. It has a tiny amount of resistance in series with it a capacitance in parallel with what's left. When conducting the tiny resistance is what allows the forward voltage drop to be greater than the otherwise fixed forward drop we see at DC. The junction capacitance is also drawing current until it's charged so that makes the small voltage drop across that unwanted tiny resistance a bit greater, as you can see in the scope shots in the Clifton Labs pics. The bottom line is that a clunky power diode is fine as a snubber for small 12 and 24VDC relay applications found in amateur radio gear. The coil energy is not large enough to melt the diode PN junction and the tiny series resistance of the diode is generally inconsequential. Placing a 1N4148 across a large relay coil is not wise since the diode is fast and that implies a tiny junction area that is easily melted. The PIV rating of the diode need only be greater than the DC voltage applied to the relay coil when it is energized since that is all the diode will see when it is reversed biased. The small differences in max forward voltages seen between various diodes is due to the tiny series resistance each diode has. This is probably 8 days too late, but the site may be down because of a whole lot of new products being announced. Apple takes it's site down while updating for new products. Elecraft is following he same strategy. Look for a spectrum display that beats the one built into ICOM7800 in responsiveness and sensitivity, the new amplifiers 800 and 1500W, gps disciplined oscillators, and more. Just wait a bit... All Squelch controls I have used conform to the way the K3 Squelch control works - it controls the level at which the squelch opens. Think of it as being numbered 1 to 9 (like the S-meter scale). When at position 2, signals greater than S-2 will open the squelch, but if set to 9, only signals above S-9 will open it. The numbers I have used are only for illustration, there is no exact correlation that I know about. If you do not have the subreceiver installed, you can set the CCONFIG menu SQ MAIN = Sub Pot and you can have the RF gain control on the main knob and the squelch on the sub knob. Yes, the same is possible with the subRX installed (set both SQ MAIN and SQ SUB to Sub Pot, but you then have no RF gain control on the sub. 73, Don W3FPR Lance Collister, W7GJ wrote: I downloaded the latest beta with the squelch and tried to set it up, but I wonder if there is something about it that I don't understand, or need to adjust differently. However, in my setup it seems to function just the opposite! The squelch is always on when the RF/SQL control is fully clockwise, and when I back off on it, it OPENS the squelch as some signal level greater than the no-signal noise level. Re: [Elecraft] K3 amp
Only familiar with Heathkit amps. Driven an SB200 SB220 with various solid state radios. Ic 730,TS 430,Ft757,IC746. I used an Ampkeyer between the radios the Heath amps. There are various interfaces. Some radios it's over kill but some need it. It also a safety too. The Heath turns on 120v to key the relay. Lots of new radios use a reed relay or electronic switching. 120v WAY too much for them. $30 is not a big expense compared to fixing a radio or amp. Elecraft says I can key my Ameritron 811h but I use the Ampkeyer interface anyway. Can't be too careful. I saved my Kopeks for a while to get my beautiful K3.I don't want to have to run the back up radio. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Diode snubbers
I worked in the discrete semiconductor industry for 30 years (engineering, manufacturing, management) and that statement is simply not true at all. Zener diodes are designed to break down uniformly across the entire junction, but most other semiconductors are not. A reverse voltage breakdown of the collector-base junction will in most cases force current through an extremely small region of the junction (often referred to as a puncture) and fuse the silicon at that point, rendering the device useless. The current required to do so is much less than would be required to heat the device even a few degrees, and the time required to destroy the device is short. Junctions with steeper diffusion gradients (RF devices, switching transistors, etc) will fail more easily (sometimes in microseconds), while sloppier junctions (power devices, etc) will take considerably more abuse. It is not possible to predict the current at which catastrophic failure will occur. Emitter-base junctions are typically more graded and won't fail catastrophically as quickly, but repeated reverse bias conditions will degrade the transfer gain of the device by creating defect centers that kill the carrier lifetimes in the base region. The inductive kick from even a small relay is sufficient to puncture the junction of many commonly used transistors or driver ICs, and there are reams of failure analysis reports documenting that fact. There isn't a manufacturer on this earth that will honor the warranty for a device used as you describe unless the device was specifically designed to survive it. Dave AB7E Rick Shindley wrote: What kills solid state PN junctions is excessive power dissipation (heat). __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY - Continuous Keying
My K3 display shows ERR KEY when I turn it on. Try disconnecting all cables from the K3 except the antenna and power (obviously!) and see if the symptoms persist. If they don't, plug in one cable at a time until the problem returns and go from there. Alternatively it could be a problem with the I/O daughter board. If you still have the problem with all cables disconnected remove the daughter board that has the RS232 and accessory connectors on (the K3 will operate fine without it) and see if that fixes the problem. If it does clean the daughter board thoroughly with something that removes water soluble flux and a tooth brush, let it dry and reinstall it and see if that fixes the problem. If the problem reappears you could try again or get the board replaced. If removing the board doesn't fix the problem I'd suggest contacting Elecraft tech support. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY - Continuous Keying
Bud, If the K3 is powered on with a KEY(or paddles) or PTT closure, ERR KEY will result, and will not transmit until the condition is cleared. (but connect a dummy load just in case). I am not certain the LINE IN has anything to do with it, but if VOX is on, the K3 can be keyed with the LINE IN signal. Has your computer developed a noisy sound card? Connect amplified speakers to the computer line out to see what it sounds like. Is there hum pickup on your cable to the K3 LINE IN? Have you connected the computer enclosure and the K3 together with a good grounding conductor? If not, try it and see if that helps. 73, Don W3FPR Bud Governale, W3LL wrote: My K3 display shows ERR KEY when I turn it on. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Secret to K2 calibration programming?
Mike, First there is up to a +/- 20 Hz tolerance that can be attributed to the K2 DAC, so dead nuts on may not actually be achievable, but you can get close. First question is - what are you using for a reference? How much do you trust its frequency accuracy? That is one potential source of error. Secondly, you are reporting discrepancies up to 500 Hz, and that is more than is to be expected after doing the K2 dial calibration. I suggest you go to my website www.w3fpr.com and look at the article dealing with K2 Dial Calibration. Follow the 3 steps mentioned in that article, and then re-check the calibration. The 4 MHz reference oscillator must be set before any other step. Use the N6KR method when setting the reference, and I highly recommend observing the WWV transmitted tones with Spectrogram to determine the correct tuning of WWV. Accuracy in setting the reference is critical to the result - allow your K2 to warm up for an hour or more before attempting to set the 4 MHz reference. 73, Don W3FPR Mike-WE0H wrote: OK, here the deal. Re: [Elecraft] What is it called?
Eutectic only applies to the 37/63 solder alloy. Eutectic infers two things - 1) it is the alloy with the lowest temperature melting point, and 2) there is no plastic state, meaning it goes directly from a liquid to a solid with no plastic state in between. The second point is the most important to us who solder - it will prevent 'cold solder' connections which can result from movement while the solder is cooling. If there is movement during the plastic state, the solder may crystallize and have poor conductivity as a result. For those purchasing solder, the 37/63 alloy is preferred over the 60/40 alloy for this very reason. 73, Don W3FPR Gil Cross wrote: At the eutectic, the solidus and liquidus temps are the same Gil __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY - Continuous Keying
See if you can isolate the problem - Turn off the K3 disconnect the computer from the K3, turn it on and check the config menu setting for PTT-KEY. Turn both PTT and KEY to OFF. Turn off the VOX. Turn off the K3 and reconnect the computer. Turn on K3 then start up computer. You should be ok. If not call Aptos. otherwise go to PTT-KEY menu and turn back on whatever was originally on. If the problem re-appears, then your computer is asserting either the RTS or DTR line continually and now you have to trouble shoot the computer - likely some program or program update is screwed up. All this is assuming that sound card is clean and not activating VOX. If you turn on VOX and it keys again, then you still have a computer soundcard issue. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft's website down? I keep getting
Not only that, but the major electric feeders are also run out in the open! Long-distance transmission lines, whether they be for communications, power transfer or car/truck/train throughways are necessarily run through non-secure areas, in most cases in the open. It would be extremely impractical to do otherwise, and would make the services prohibitively expensive. The problem with the six fiber cables (four in south San Jose, two in San Mateo) appear to be deliberate acts of sabotage, meant to cause harm. They were perpetrated by someone who knew what they were doing. It would be next to impossible to secure against such an act, especially since it may be (looks like, and is reported as being) an inside job. At this point the local news continues to report that the outage is ongoing with no estimate as to when repairs will be completed. They are also reporting that just about everything to do with the two cuts are under criminal investigation. Let's hope that the folks in Aptos come back on line very soon. -Jack Brindle, W6FB === On Apr 9, 2009, at 3:43 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: It was deliberate, apparently in both cases... http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/04/09/BAP816VTE6.DTLtsp=1 So the communications capabilities for a few million people are routed through some unattended vaults in public places and there's no security system to alert someone when one of the vaults is opened.
