Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Connecting the K2 to a RigBlaster Pro and computer
David, I cannot fully answer your questions right now, BUT I must give you a caution. The K2 AUX IO connector is *not* an RS-232 port - that is why it is labeled AUX IO. To avoid damage to your K2, use ONLY the cable shown in the KIO2 manual to connect your K2 to the Rigblaster Pro. In other words, only TXD RXD and signal ground (pins 2, 3 and 5) of the K2 AUX IO connector should connect to either a computer or the Rigblaster Pro. The K2 has no provisions for FSK, and attempts to use DTR or RTS for PTT or keying will damage the K2 because those pins in the normal RS-232 interface pinout are used within the K2 structure for carrying internal K2 signals to external Elecraft producets such as the KRC2 and KAT100. Again, the K2 AUX IO is *not* an RS-232 port although it does carry 3 of the defined RS-232 signals TXD, RXD and Signal Ground. 73, Don W3FPR David Heinsohn wrote: Evening All I think it's time for a bit more of the combined wisdom of the list before I proceed. It was connected to an Icom - 706 until tonight, but only really used for PSK31 with Digipan. P1, the mic jumper block has been reconfigured to the K2. And an on air test was satisfactory. It's now time to configure P16 for Rig Ctl, CW, PTT, FSK, etc. I believe that diagram #9 on page 29 of my manual is the correct configuration. Then the 232 cables would be compter to RigBlaster 232-A, and RigBlaster 232-B to K2. Is this correct? And finally, what experience do others have in connecting and using the K2 with a RigBlaster? Re: [Elecraft] NR for Dummys
I'm still playing with the 3.27 NR, but I like it alot. I operate CW only and have been using the F1-x filter section mostly because it seems that F2 through F4 are minor variations on the F1 theme, so to speak; but I will try them later. With CW signals of course there is not as much subtlety involved as SSB-- you mostly either hear them or you don't. So for SSB maybe there is a bigger difference between F1-x and F4-x. In general... I haven't found any signals yet that the NR loses when it is turned on, so that is good. True, I also haven't heard any unreadable signals that the NR makes readable, but I am probably pretty good at ignoring the distraction of noise and QRM myself. The NR (especially F1-4) gives the impression of a very narrow filter, but used with a wide bandwidth (2.5 KHz typical for me) you can hear the widely separated signals-- it is an eerie and pleasant effect. I am beginning to trust the NR so I can leave it on and tune across the quieted band knowing it will not miss any signals. Anyhow, here are the settings I am using. You can try them for a start. YMMV, as they say... AGC Slow AGC Threshold 8 AGC Slope 1 AFX Delay 2 RX Eq Flat 0db CW Pitch 520 Hz (typical) BW 2.5 KHz (typical) Cheap Sony MDR-210 headphones (probably should get something better) BTW, someone else mentioned being able to copy signal pitch down to 50 HZ in the previous beta; I can copy comfortably down to about 110 Hz with the above setup. I am used to using a receiver with AGC turned off, AF Gain at max, and adjusting the volume with the RF Gain. But the NR+AGC is a lot more convenient (don't have to keep riding the RF Gain control) and, so far, just as effective as far as I can tell. Can't really compare the NR to the earlier versions because I didn't use it all that much. 73, Drew AF2Z On Fri, 28 Aug 2009 00:29:09 -0500, you wrote: Where can I buy the book? [Elecraft] K3 Settings for NR using 3.3.27
Hello List and Robin, Robin asked for some of my settings that I use on my K3 regarding the new NR in Firmware 3.27, and I thought that it may help the Group to post them here. These are answers to Robins questions, so keep this in mind. AND...I use my K3 almost 100% as an IF for VHF Bands, so it is being fed from external XV's , not an HF antenna. The K3 does see HF use, but at present I am using a new toy..a Thomson CSF TRC300 HF Military Manpack, but when that novelty wears off, I'll be back on the K3. Back to Robins questions.. My K3 in Serial Number 63, with NO modifications at all. I am about to do the lot when I get my K144XV shortly, as the radio will be open for that installation. AGC is set for SLOW, and NR for F1-2 normally, or sometimes F1-4 With the NR OFF, I see about S1-2 Noise ( listening on 144 Mhz ). The Two Meter Band at this QTH is slowly getting noisier, with all manner of crap appearing on a daily basis from what was, 17 years ago, an almost silent Band :( I usually use the 2.7 Khz Filter ( 5 Pole ? ) BW/SHIFT/Hi/Low Settings are.. FC 1.5 , LO 0.15 , Hi 2.85 Filter 2.7 Khz When I turn NR ON, it is an almost instant quiet effect. There is a perceptible echo effect, but not annoyingly so...but I suppose this is a very personal opinion...it may annoy the hell out of others. I have found that DSP NR is not a magic Pill...it can help resolve a very weak signal, but is not a miracle worker. Most of my listening is through external Stereo Speakers ( Computer type add ons, powered ) but for really weak stuff, I use those EX29 Extreme Isolation H/Phones, that are excellent. AFX is usually OFF, but I have found on occasion , that it helps to turn it ON. AGC is set as...DLY SOFT , HLD 0.02 , PLS NOR , SLP 014 , THL 006 , -F 120 , -S 020 RX Equalizer Curve is flat...after reading recent comments about NR etc.. That should answer all of Robins questions...and fire away with any more if you have them. From a weak signal VHF Operators ( SSB ) point of view, I have always thought that the NR function was good ( early days...the echo thing annoyed me, but comparing the K3 to various Icom DSP NR Systems , it was streets ahead ) to excellent in more recent times. As I was typing this reply, I had a call from a Station on 144 Mhz SSB who is about 300k away, and it was a 5/1 type signal...I engaged NR at F1-4 and found I had to back off to F1-1 , which then made it just a voice with little to no white noise content...a slight echo, but much easier to listen to minus all the Band noise. 73 Glenn VK4BG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR
Yeah, I agree with what you are saying. I like the NB on CW, but on SSB even at F1-1 it sounds somewhat like being in a tunnel. I would like to see a NB setting that is less aggressive and that doesn't change the audio as much. Also it would be nice if the audio didn't reduce in volume when turning on the NB. Re: [Elecraft] K1 U2 extraction help!
but still have some on the top. I'm trying to salvage the IC (product detector) so am begging for advice on how to successfully free up the solder from the top of the board. This is an 8 pin DIP. You run the risk of damaging PCB pads if you try to extract it all at once. It might be worth ordering another IC (or begging for one from the group, since procuring a single 612 (is that the right IC?) might not be worth the effort involved via Digikey etc.) -- in fact, I'd consider asking Elecraft; as long as you're not trying to stock your lab with lots of parts, they might be willing to ship you a replacement for a reasonable fee. It's worth asking. If you go that route, just use snub-nose snippers/dykes to nip the legs near where they enter the IC package, and remove the legs one by one by heating them up and pulling them out. A lot less potential destruction to the board. If you insist on removing the IC at once, you'll need a good soldering iron with good staying power -- like a desktop 800 deg Weller-type, not a 20 W pencil type. I usually work on the two sides separately. Take a thick lead (from a resistor or something) and solder it to all four legs (pins 1-4) on the bottom of the PCB, and flood it with solder. This spreads the heat out and lets you release the pins on all four pins at once. If you don't do this you risk putting stress on other pins while you heat/pry one pin, and that's when you can really damage the vias and PCB. WIth all four pins heated, take a flat blade screwdriver and GENTLY pry one end of the IC, rotating the screwdriver tip to concentrate on prying the pins 1-4 side. Don't nudge too far -- just a little, then let things cool. Keep the driver in there with gently pressure applied until the solder cools, so the IC doesn't revert back to its original position. Now move to the other four pins (5-8) and do the same procedure. Then back to the first side. And so on... back and forth until it's free. Takes a while but it works. You typically need three or four hands. Again, a decent iron is a must. Unless you're comfortable with the process and have a decent iron, I'd really just snip and salvage the IC and see if Elecraft or a list member can get replacement part to you. I'd offer you one of mine but I just sold the last of my stock. --Andrew, NV1B .. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR
I'm running version 3.27/2.25 on K3 #384. I live in a high noise suburb of NYC. When I tap the NR button, the noise just about disappears, and the signal remains, SSB or CW. Magic! The difference is more noticeable on SSB, of course, because I usually have the pass band set to 500 Hz for CW. My favorite NR setting is F1-3. I seldom change from that setting anymore. I don't use EQ. I operate 90% CW and RTTY. When I do operate SSB, I'm not too concerned about audio frequency response. If I can understand what the other guy is saying, I conclude that I've got him tuned in OK. When I want hi-fi, I get out the IPod_ hi! But, don't be mad at me. That's just me. Re: [Elecraft] K1 U2 extraction help!
Gary, Good decision. Just think of it this way - even if it costs $25 to $30 to order one (or 2 or 3) from an electronics distributor like DigiKey or Mouser or others, that is a small price compared to the price of a board and the rest of the components that are mounted on it. In this particular case, you ae likely to get a single one for much less from Elecraft. Don't be 'penny-wise and pound (dollar) foolish' - all things have their relative value. This is not a time to fool with typical ham frugality, there is too much relative value at stake. 73, Don W3FPR Gary W. Marklund wrote: Thanks to all that replied on and off list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR
Tony, Did you mean NR when you stated NB? I find no audio reduction when turning on the NB unless I have the IF NB cranked up to maximum. I first thought the new NR was reducing the audio, but I found it was not so when one is tuned to a signal. The noise reduction is so effective that in my case it almost behaves like a squelch because there is not band noise at all (my noise level is not usually very high anyway) - so there is a natural tendency to turn up the audio gain because there is no noise to hear - but when a signal is present, the audio is then LOUD. As I have stated in prior posts, I *do* find a bit of AF reduction on SSB if I have the NR set to F3-x or F4-x, but I find NR on SSB quite effective at the F1-x or F2-x settings. 73, Don W3FPR N2TK wrote: Also it would be nice if the audio didn't reduce in volume when turning on the NB. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I've managed to suck the solder from the holes on the bottom of the board, but still have some on the top. I'm trying to salvage the IC (product detector) so am begging for advice on how to successfully free up the solder from the top of the board. This is an 8 pin DIP. I've had good luck with the following procedure. 1. First, remove as much of the solder as possible with a solder sucker and wicking braid. 2. Then grasp each pin from the bottom of the board with a pair of needle-nosed pliers and wiggle it back and forth to break the bond of the remaining solder. If you managed to remove almost all the solder from each hole in step 1, then you should be able to free each pin without damaging anything. If you can't clear almost all the solder from the holes (i.e. if you can't see light through all the holes), then it's best to give up on saving the IC. As others have suggested, just clip all the leads at the IC body and remove the pins individually. Next question, is there any reason not to use sockets in this location (or any other Elecraft kit for that matter)? In general, there are two reasons not to use sockets: 1. Increased cost. 2. Decreased reliability. That said, it can be a good idea to use sockets on a homebrew project, especially if it is a new design that you are likely to have to modify later. And, of course, a socket is needed for a ROM or other programmable device that might have to be changed later. [Elecraft] K3 NR triggering
I agree with N6MQL, after working with 3.27 awhile now, 3.25 made CW better. I only have the 250Hz filter, and it doesn't do as well with NR as wide settings... and the wide filter setting makes the NR shine. It may even work better than 3.25 NR narrow overall, I don't know. My constant operations with the K3 in CW were to sit at 250 to 50 Hz and put NR on if I needed weak signal enhancement.. which it would do.. and NR setting 2-3 (as others have mentioned) was the sweet spot. I suppose I could change my operations to work in the wide filter where NR is good, and only go narrow if adjacent signals make me do so. Being an old dog I hate new tricks but will come along eventually. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 problems
Doug, Except for the voltages on Q4, the DC voltages look OK. Check R9 and R26. The voltage at both ends of R26 should be near 6 volts. Did you put the jumper between J7 pins 1 and 3? How do the toroid leads look? Well stripped and tinned with a bit of tinned lead showing on the toroid side of the board? Look particularly at T1's green winding. R4 started out fully counterclockwise (if you followed the instructions), and there will be no RF output at that setting. Do you get any RF when R4 is advanced clockwise? 73, Don W3FPR 73, Don W3FPR Doug Person wrote: Just finished my KX1. Unfortunately, it won't produce any output on transmit. Receive is excellent. Re: [Elecraft] KAF2 cylindrical crystal I got two.
Ivan, I don't know if there is a significant difference between the 2 crystals or not, but I suspect that either will work. The crystal is only for the Real Time Clock. Put one crystal in and keep tabs on the time display for a few days. If it is off drastically, try the other crystal. If it off by only a little bit, try adjusting C19 as indicated in the manual on page 12. The normal clock accuracy is better than 2 seconds per day. If you have an accurate frequency counter, the clock frequency should be 32768.0 Hz (measure at U3 pin 2). 73, Don W3FPR Ivin Flint wrote: I am confused on the X1 Crystal, cylindrical 32.768 crystal.
