Re: [Elecraft] RFI noise
Bill, In the UK it is the case that many SMPSU's have, once CE certification has been obtained been manufactured in volume with the input filter parts omitted. These are in the main imports from Tiawan and China. These non-compliant PSU's have been brought to the attention of our regulator Ofcom, which dragged it's heels, and has finally - done nothing. In the UK we have TSO's (Trading Standards Offices) which are locally based. They are tasked with enforcing vast amounts of EU legislation with little funding. The EMC Directive to which these PSU's must comply comes within their remit. Trading Standards were recently involved in a investigation into a Taiwanese company that was importing SMPSU's that breached a number of CE marking requirements, including the EMC one. Although substantial evidence was gathered (at some expense to TS) which in the case of EMC compliance with EN55022 showed the PSU's to be over the limit by >30dB, no prosecution has taken place. This was due to poor wording which crept in when the UK regulations were transposed from the EU ones. A total waste of time and money... Trading Standards have stated, that until the UK EMC Regulations 2006 are amended, they will not take on any further EMC complaints. This leaves the door wide open for any company that wishes to avoid the extra expense of CE compliance to do what it wants. 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Thu, 24 Sep 2009 15:32:20 -0500, Bill NY9H wrote: > At 02:08 PM 9/24/2009, William Carver wrote: >>I lost a PC power su > > filter parts missing from production power suppliesprobably after > agency certifications. > > > RSGB's magazine has been on this issue for many months with pictures etc > I believe that they had not much concern from their OFCOM on the issue. > > I would think the FCC would not take well to being "frauded" ...in > this fashion. > > I'd copy the list with your brand names & model numbers,, do copy the > RFI list > and let the folks at Tiger Direct they got shipped 'defective" > fraudulent goods as well... > > back to Ft5ga > > bill > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] RFI
Tom, So-called EMI/RFI filters are typically differential-mode devices (i.e., there is an L/C filter in each side of the AC line). Noise generated by switching power supplies is, at least in my experience, usually common-mode. Differential mode RFI filters won't do a thing for it. Get a big ferrite toroidal core (type 43 is a good mix) and wrap it fully with the AC line cord close to the machine. You will probably find that the noise is eliminated or reduced. If it is reduced but not eliminated, put another core in series with the first one, extending the line cord if necessary. If your neighbor is willing to continue to help you solve the problem, I'd try this before going to a noise phaser, which are a pain to adjust every time you switch frequencies. [Elecraft] RFI noise
The power supplies sans the RFI filter were to repair a computer that's now gone. I might be able to find the second supply that I never used, but it's old business. Honestly there is so much of this coming over that the FCC couldn't cope with it all even if it happened yesterday. Cutting corners on RFI is a two way street: without any filtering your computer is more vulnerable to our RF getting in via the power cord. The info from Tony that PCPOWER IS a reliable power supply vendor that will probably protect their reputation and supply performance is the good news. I remember having this problem with an old Advantest Drift-o-matic spectrum analyser at Uni. David, The K3's front panel switches do not have a minimum required current. I just verified this again with the manufacturer. They have gold- plated contacts on the PC board and should be extremely reliable. Regarding the switch test function in the menu: A small amount of digit flicker is perfectly normal. The A to D converter has an ambiguity of +/- one count, and the firmware algorithm reading the switch has no hysteresis, therefore +/- count of flicker is also to be expected. In firmware, we read the switch voltage several times, average them, and look for the proper switch code based on "bins" that have a large amount of excess margin. So the operator should not be concerned in the least about a deviation of even several counts in their own switch read voltages. If you're experiencing any type of switch-read error that isn't a hard failure, it is probably something that I can improve in firmware. I'll be happy to work with you on this -- please give me a detailed example. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] OT: Maytag Bravos RFI
This is indeed becoming more of an issue. I recently replaced my furnace with an American Standard 95% efficient model with a variable speed blower. I was concerned about the blower, since it uses a DC motor with electronic drive circuits. Of course there isn't a lot of information to be had about RFI on these kinds of appliances up-front. So I held my breath and crossed my fingers during the install. In this case, I can report good news - no detectable noise from the furnace from 160 thru 20 (only places I've checked). I could probably live with a noisy washer (I don't do laundry during contests ;>), but it is nice to have heat! 73 Craig AC0DS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Jim, What is the URL for the RFI reflector please? I need to belong! If one makes a mistake and gets something that generates radio noise it can take hours and hours to try and cure the problem. Some of the problems are nearly impossible to cure as the basic design makes it prohibitive. Ed W0SD No virus found in this outgoing message. [Elecraft] K7VK on 6m from Bare Cone Mountain in DN25tr Montana
Hello! Just in case you are in the western North America and still need grid DN25 on 6m, I wanted to let you know that K7VK, K7PX and I are planning to head up to 7800' Bare Cone Mountain in the Bitterroot Range on Monday September 28 for an overnight 6m Terrestrial Propagation Mode mini DXpedition. If anyone wants to see on Google Earth where we will be, the coordinates are: Latitude: 45°43'9.43"N Longitude: 114°24'44.24"W I am bringing along my K3 with PR6 preamp, laptop computer with GPS timekeeping. Vick has Steve's 5 element backup yagi tuned up, and I have broken down my 6M8GJ and Portable Mast ( http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/6M8GJassembly.htm ) into largish sections for transport and fast assembly up on the mountain top. I will take along LMR600 low loss feedline, just as on a 6m EME DXpediiton - the only difference is that we will not be running an amplifier up there. We hope to just beat the snow up there ;-) Vick says that he also will have liaison on 40m, so we will be monitoring 7133-7136 if people are not copying us and want to let us know to turn the antenna or something ;-) We will NOT have any internet capability up there, but please watch the ON4KST Region 2 6m chat page and the DX CLUSTER spots for information posted by others: http://www.on4kst.info/chat/login.php?band=7 We will monitor either 50.190 or 50.125 when we are not transmitting. Please don't expect us to be transmitting all the time, because we will only be on battery power. If people don't hear us, but are interested in working us, they should call for us. We will come on if we copy anything. Based on my experience and the 7800' high QTH we will have, I am sure we will be able to contact anyone between 600 and 1200 miles on JT65A mode using D layer scatter and under 600 miles on ground wave. This little barefoot (100w) DXpedition should demonstrate the ability to collect grids year-round on 6m using the power of JT65A. We will plan to start out between 1800 and 1900Z Monday on 50.190 beaming NW on JT65A mode (we will always XMIT in the first seqeuence, regardless of mode). I am inclined to stay primarily on 50.190 throughout the day and evening, switching to various modes as is appropriate. We will have CW and SSB capability also in the event signals are extraordinarily strong, and will monitor 50.125 when we are not busy working stations on 50.190. On Tuesday morning we will plan to operate FSK441 on 50.260 (and possibly QSY to some other frequency as required). If we are going to be listening up 10, we will send something like "CQU10 K7VK DN25". Similarly, if we are listening down 10, we will send something like "CQD10 K7VK DN25". We probably won't be on past about mid-morning on Tuesday, since we will have to tear down and leave at least by noon. I hope people who still need DN25 can be QRV at some point during our little mountain top excursion ;-) GL and VY 73, Lance -- Lance Collister, W7GJ (ex: WN3GPL, WA3GPL, WA1JXN, WA1JXN/C6A, ZF2OC/ZF8, E51SIX) P.O. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Maytag Bravos RFI
Just thinking about this. Is it across all HF bands RF type pickup? Or is it band specific? Is it only when the drum motor is running or is the RF noise there all the time the washer is on? Is the noise being picked up from the shields of the coax - do you hear the RF noise if you disconnect the cables from the rig and short or 50 ohm terminate the coax connector(s)? 73, N2TK, Tony -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jim Brown Sent: Thursday, September 24, 2009 12:43 PM To: RFI List; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] OT: Maytag Bravos RFI On Thu, 24 Sep 2009 08:58:42 -0700 (PDT), Don Rasmussen wrote: >The wife gave me the green light to replace our Whirlpool Duet washing machine, aside from the terrible interference it put on HF, she was not happy with the rinse cycle, it was leaving soap in our cloths -and- they were not getting clean. >My decision, to abandon high efficiency front load and go back to tried and true conventional top load washer that has no computer/switcher power supply to hash me. >Two days ago I bought a top loader, a Maytag Bravos from Fry's at $699 marked down $200. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Maytag Bravos RFI
I would consider this a whole lot less OT than a lot of things I read. I found it very valuable. There seems to be a site for nearly everything on the internet anymore. A valuable site would be one that hams would participate in and list items that are clean and don't interfere with the radio spectrum. The switching supplies seem to be a major culprit and it is just going to get worse. Even those that meet the FCC Part 15 Class B standards can be a real problem with our amateur equipment. In roughly the last year I have had switching power supply noise from my new computer which made DXing on the low bands impossible until I solved with filtering on the AC line. I had router noise across all the bands which made many, many frequenies un-useable some of which were places I operate a lot which I could not anymore. Fortunately I pretty well cured this by slowing the speed. Both of those answers came from this reflector so I would not call help permitting me to use my K3's OT. My latest problem which I have not been able to solve is 24 khz switching noise from my Outback MPPT solar controller. The harmonics from it make it all the way up to two meters. It is S-9+15 db on 160M. This switching noise is a tough one as IMHO it should be cured at the source rather than the output where instead of stopping the switching frequency you have the whole spectrum of interference to deal with. Of course if you start modifying internally you are going to void the warranty. At this point based on my last years experience before I buy anything different I am going to do my very best to try and find out about radio noise and if I can not then be sure I can return it without a penalty. Where possible one may have to bring a K3 with a gel battery to the store and check things out. The thing is there are a lot of things now that are noise sources that I for one would not expect as almost everything is going to switching supplies. Ed W0SD No virus found in this outgoing message. Cable shielding IS a good thing, but using twisted pairs and terminating them to the chassis at each end, NOT to the circuit board, is the most important thing. 73, Jim Brown K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I had the same issue with my newest K3, so I had a basis to compare to another K3. Wayne put on his phone engineer hat and designed a circuit mod that reduced gain to an IF transformer, a resistor change. I can't imagine this kind of service from any other company - amazing. Since then they have been working on a provision in the utility program that will achieve the same effect, using only the firmware. Gotta love SDR. Real serial ports tend to be quieter. Some have found that it is important to have continuity through the cable shielding from the K2 right through to the computer. - Julian, G4ILO. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Check Your Buttons
A quick look at the circuit diagram shows that buttons are taken from a potential divider to CD74HC4051M inputs. These switches (unless I've misread the diagram) will therefore take the input current of the multiplexer which is typically <1uA. I don't know the spec for the Elecraft switch but a similar one requires a minimum current of 10uA. This should be checked more rigorously, but it might indicate a potential problem. David G3UNA Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Check Your Buttons Paul, I am very surprised that this has not come up before! My K3 is #570 and it has had 4 front panel boards (a couple for what I called flaky or just bad switches and the rest for other reasons) and the same problem you describe is still there. The latest one is the best, but I still get some strange things happening - mostly with the BAND and MODE switches, but it has occurred occasionally with other switches, and it is not very reproducible - it can be very intermittent, or it can happen fairly often. When the K3 went back to Elecraft the beginning of the year for a different problem they checked out the Front Panel switches and said the switch operation is fine, but it's not. I have seen the problem on a fairly new K3 owned by a ham near here I have seen the problem on the K3s at the Elecraft booth at Hamcom. Again, it is intermittent. For the longest time I figured it was me and the way I press the buttons on #570 I did try SW test and Sca Adc - at times the beeps were slow, unevenly spaced or did not appear at all and it did not seem to me that the switches with flickering scan codes were the switches that were causing mis-operations. But when I press and hold the ALT to switch sidebands, and the radio changes three modes, maybe a band, reverses sideband and turns on the RX ANT, it causes one to wonder but K3support does not have any of these problems! So I have decided that the K3 switches are a trade-off to have the best receiver that is out there in the Amateur market. And so are the several other operational quirks, but again I can put up with those when and if they come up to the top of the "upcoming K3 features" list. Like you, I'm out of warranty, so $400 is out of the question for yet another Front Panel board. Besides, I don't think it can be fixed. 73HankK8DD __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
