Re: [Elecraft] P3 suggestions
Feature 1 is something that is being actively talked about with P3 field testers... Feature 2 already happens with the latest P3 firmware the reference level is remembered per band. As for feature 3 you may be able to get by with what you want using the peak hold feature. The freeze feature is almost what you want but you can't move markers while in that mode. ~Brett (N7MG) On Sun, 2010-09-19 at 22:06 -0700, Andy Faber wrote: Hi Al, I finally built my own P3 yesterday (#152) and it seems to work great. I'd like to revive three suggestions that I think I made earlier after using a prototype at P49Y in WPX CW. These are all based on features of the Icom 756 Pro 2 bandscope, that I think are desirable: 1) Can a FN key be set to go to a preset span? It would be very nice to be able to do so, instead of having to fiddle with the span knob each time you want to look wide or narrow. How about allowing a cycling among several preset spans? 2) When one changes bands, it would be nice if the P3 automatically set its reference level, so it didn't need manual adjustment. 3) The Pro has a hold feature that freezes the display to allow you to move the marker to a signal that may have disappeared. I realize to some extent the waterfall display allows that also, but it would be nice to be able to do so with the spectrum display also. I've not seen this, but your VFO B area is probably showing power supply voltage when a power level is expected. In answer to your last two comments, yes and yes. Although I passed a 20 wpm test in front of an FCC examiner, I'll confess to not being much of a CW op. Nevertheless, with my TS-870 and its built-in Accukeyer I send nearly flawless CW. With the K3---well if I haven't programmed the message with the utility, I don't send it. I suppose it's me, but I thought the object of electronic keyers was to improve sending, not make it worse. So I have what is arguably the finest CW rig around and what do I do with it? Re: [Elecraft] P3 firmware 0.36 experiences?
I'm using 0.36, and like you have no need to use the function key implementation of QSY tap/hold. However, I do run LP-Pan/PowerSDR concurrently with the P3 at times and the 0.36 serial port changes have eliminated some problems I was experiencing in that case. But beyond that, nothing else noticed or enjoyed. Here's another un-original idea: how about static band edge markers on the P3? These would be vertical red lines on the spectrum display to demarcate the ham bands. I like having these in the PowerSDR display when hopping around the band, to have a rough idea of my position relative to the bottom of the CW band. Sure, there is a numerical readout of cursor position, but panadaptor tuning is supposed to be an unabashedly visual experience, right? At present I use the VFO B marker for this purpose, parking it at the lower band edge. This is particularly useful when CENTER has been held and I'm surveying the band by changing the center frequency using the QSY knob. Bob NW8L On Mon, Sep 20, 2010 at 7:44 AM, Craig D. The keyer in the TS-870 is a Logic Keyer (K1). You could buy a Logic Keyer and probably some emulation that fits you better. The keyer in the K3 is as good as I've seen. I understand it emulates the Curtis keyer which is my favorite. I've had the TS-870 and many others and I find them all easy to use up to my limit of coordination about 35 wpm then I start making mistakes. Re: [Elecraft] P3 suggestions
Al, Thanks for the reply. Regarding the reference level, the Icom always seems to simply set it correctly. I assume it is not merely remembering the level when bands are switched, but is rather computing a new floor each time. Is that a bad approach? I like having the ability to adjust the reference level and the scale on the P3, but on the other hand, for a quick look at a band in a contest, it would be convenient not to have to make any adjustments when changing bands (even if the noise floor may have changed since you were last on that band). 73, andy, ae6y - Original Message - From: Alan Bloom n...@cds1.net To: Andy Faber andrewfa...@ymail.com Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, September 20, 2010 8:58 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 suggestions Hi Andy, On Sun, 2010-09-19 at 22:06 -0700, Andy Faber wrote: ... 1) Can a FN key be set to go to a preset span? Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW keyer issues
Hmmm ... I'm a 99% CW operator and I find the K3's built-in keyer to be excellent, free of misfires and glitches for the most part. I'd use one of my fine external keyers if there was a need, but there's not. Over the years I've used the Accu-Keyer, the AEA Contester, and the Super CMOS II, all fine keyers, and I find the K3's keyer to have a very similar feel. I will say that I have had the K3's keyer misfire or hesitate while the K3 was being bombarded with serial interchanges from HRD and/or N1MM. This surprised me because I thought the keyer would have a very high priority. But it hasn't happened in many months and may have been a glitch since eliminated in either the K3 or the external software I was using. 73- Nick, WA5BDU On 9/20/2010 10:01 AM, Wes Stewart wrote: Nevertheless, with my TS-870 and its built-in Accukeyer I send nearly flawless CW. [Elecraft] K2 - KAT2 Tuner and Alpha Delta DX-EE Dipole
Hi Stan: Do you already have the Alpha Delta? I had a DX-DD for years, then purchased a DX-LB. Both worked well, and were EXTREMELY robust. These things are built to survive a nuclear attack. Consequenty, they are heavy. The wires kink and no ammount of stretching seems to make them unkink. The 160 coils are even heavier! I have a small tower, and was always afraid that these antennas would pull it down! The KAT3 worked fine with both of them, even enabling operation everywhere on 160. My MFJ998 would not tune more than 60kHz of 160 on the DX-LB, but 80 and 40 worked fine on both of the tuners. I have since removed both of these antennas, given up on 160m from within my small city lot and now have a Carolina Windom 80LP which I traded the DX-LB for. This very light, very easy to send aloft antenna works surprisingly well. It is an off-center fed dipole that has a 22 foot RG8X coax transition piece. The coax radiates in the vertical plane. This coax it then attached to a choke to which you attach your coaxial feedline. I feed mine with 100ft of RG8X, 30feet of which is in a coil at my antenna interface panel to act like a choke. The ends of the 134 foot long wires are folded down and weighted with fishing line sinkers to make it fit in the 100ft of horizontal space I have available. This doesnt seem to bother it, and may be helpful in a bobtail curtain sort of way (although I dont believe in RF VooDoo!) Its somewhat expensive for a chunk of wire (like all of these manufactured dipoles are), but I continue to be amazed at how well it works for me. And it has stayed up through lots of wind and weather. Supposedly designed for low heights (mine is at 38 feet at the highest point) it has the advantage over the Alpha Delta of being useable on 80 through 10 meters INCLUDING the WARC bands. The KAT3 or the MFJ998 has never had a problem anywhere with this antenna. The other advantage for me is that this model (the 80LP) is built with smaller parts than the normal Carolina Windoms. Its really light and the uninsulated wire is nearly invisible, so it makes my wife much happier than the crooked #12 solid grey on the Alpha Deltas. The key to this antenna apears to be keeping the vertical radiation feeder coax as vertical as possible and away from metal. I tried to slope the radiating coax feeder away, and it didnt work very well. Mine is 15 feet away from my tower, the nearest metal, and drops down above my pool patio. I then run the RG8X coax from the shack in a conduit along a sidewalk, exit the conduit and go about 6 feet up to the choke unit. My tribander is 2 feet directly above its highest point (not the feedpoint, BTW), and this does not seem to bother either antenna, although I bet there is some interaction. Re: [Elecraft] CW keyer issues
Keying well is a partnership between the individual and one of a dozen different keyer methods out there. The designer of a rig has to PICK a few, or physically embed a proprietary chip. Proprietary methods cannot be used in a manufactured unit without paying royalties or a license fee or getting into copyright and lawsuit issues. Even Iambic A and Iambic B have differing implementations. The only keyer method out of all of those out there that I, personally, can use well at all is the Ultimatic. Anything else is hopeless, even at slower speeds. I simply cannot use any of the squeeze paddle techniques. I have to deal with that as a separate issue from my transceiver. It is unrealistic to expect a rig manufacturer to embed every possible choice of a keyer algorithm in firmware. IF your favorite IS in there, LUCKY YOU. Just don't start bragging. I have to get my source of Ultimatic elsewhere. Don't bother me with how to do . I've tried and tried and tried and tried for a quarter century to learn the other stuff and, long after I should have, had the good sense to just give it up and do what's necessary to get Ultimatic separately on the shelf with WHATEVER rig I have, and be done with it. If a program has Ultimatic embedded that's cool. But there's just no point EXPECTING it. Yeah, it WOULD be neat if all dozen methods were on the menu. But somebody who actually has to make a profit, to keep on manufacturing equipment and paying expenses and salaries, has to make profitability choices. I'm really surprised if I find Ultimatic in anything. If they never do anything else, Microham won my eternal gratitude by putting Ultimatic in their MicroXXX series. I bought my transceiver because it could HEAR. Stuff that transmits is a dime a dozen. Or you can go buy the Brooklyn Bridge in ham gear that still can't RX. [Elecraft] K3 - audio output question
During the Route 66 Special Event this past 9 days, yesterday I think, I had the monitor audio quit. Didn't know what was going on but think if faded down and out rather than just dropping off instantly but in a couple of seconds or so. I was still transmitting and all was working just fine but no monitor output. Monitor setting was 5 during the contest. Normally 4 in the past. I kept on going for a few more contacts and then powered down and up and all was well. I did have the internal radio speaker on and it continued to work even when the monitor was gone. Later the same thing happened but this time with the radio speaker and the monitor was still doing fine. Again the power cycle corrected the problem. No external speakers connected, front panel headset and mic, yes to external power amplifier, firmware 4.05 set, PC connected but not being used for control. I did have HRD up at times but do not remember if it was connected at the time. Generally it was not up. Only happened once on the monitor and once on the internal speaker and they each continued to operate when the other quit. Any other information anybody wants? Any ideas? 1752 contacts by me on my K3 during the W6P Special Event station from my location. Almost continuous comments on signal quality, clarity, cleanliness. Also was told loudest signal on the band several times (helps the contact count and keeps the frequency clear hi hi). The W6P callsign made 2651contacts in the 9 days (errors removed). Anybody who might have worked me, thanks. I beat the goal I had set for myself and for the club also. THANKS for an EXCELLENT radio. Sure pumps up a persons pride having those comments coming in. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] No Transmit Power
Brian, DON'T DO THAT! If the K2 is developing any power, it will not do it for long without a 50 ohm dummy load. The PA transistors can go poof in a hurry when operated into an open circuit - yes, the small antenna wire is an open circuit. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/19/2010 10:39 PM, Brian Denley wrote: ?I should add: If I connect a small wire to my K2 antenna and press tune, it shows a strong signal on any of my receivers at that frequency. [Elecraft] K3 CW keyer issues
I agree with the comment about Iambic A vs B option. I really couldn't stand the keyer (at first) until I swapped from A to B (or was it from B to A?). Now, smooth as silk and nothing is every missed. Of course, that was years ago now (one of my K3s is first run). I have always run Mode A from the time that Iambic came along, I can't manage the extra dit that Mode B inserts. Nor have I ever mastered the fine art of squeezing gently. Too old I guess. I get perfect keying from my K3 using the HexKey, and so far as I know, it has never burped, belched, or stuttered. I have ... but not the radio. In contests when running N1MM with a USB WinKey, I use the K3 internal keyer for fills and requests and I've never experienced a problem there either even though N1MM is polling the radio. My K2 exhibits a very tiny, just noticeable occasional irregularity but it is very rare and not a problem. Incidentally, the HexKey is markedly smoother and better than either of my two vanilla Benchers with the spring. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - Celebrating our 40th year on the air - Look for stations signing /40 - Info at www.nccc.cc/40th __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi John, Could you be using an external speaker / speakers with mono plug / plugs? If so, this is a well known audio output chip killer. Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW keyer issues
That's certainly the thing to do, Barry, but most operators have found the Elecraft keyers work FB once they figure out which mode they already know ;-) I built an Accukeyer back in the 70's and used it until I got the K2 and had to go through the same process. [Elecraft] K3 init macro feature request
I'd like to see a way to designate an init macro, like the callsign set. For example, I like the rig to remember the TX TEST state and always start up in TX TEST, but I recognize that such a feature might not be popular enough to warrant the development and codespace. However, it's easy to express this in the K3 command set and if I could specify a macro to run when the rig turns on, it'd be easy. I suspect there may be other settings that could be customized in this way. Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW keyer issues
Hi all. I started to learn on a PicoKeyer and now that I got the K1 I am finishing my learning on that. I am hoping that the keyer in the K3 is some what the same as the K1 so when I get the K3 there won't be all that much of a difference. Does anyone know if they are similar? I am hoping it would be a smooth transition :-) Is the K2 keyer similar too? [Elecraft] P3 Freezing up
My P3 was freezing up once in a while and it was getting more and more frequent. Turning it off and on cleared it up. I finally I had been running the station on battery for probably 5 hours (only running 25 watts into my amp) and when I turned the power supply on, it quit doing it. I can imagine the power was down below the 12 volt level, possibly even below 11 volts. [Elecraft] [OT] Frequency Guide
The Considerate Operator's Frequency Guide (http://www.arrl.org/files/file/conop.pdf) has changed in recent years. It seems many are unaware of this. For example, on 40 meters the ARRL suggestion now is: 7.030 - QRP CW calling freq 7.040 - DX Data, (incl. RTTY and PSK31) 7.080 to 7.125 - RTTY/Data However, wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSK31) says: Current usage as of 2010, based on observation, is centered on 7,070.15 and 21,070.15. There is no authoritative list as the frequencies are determined by common convention. Where do you guys work most of your 40 meter PSK31? Al W6LX Wikipedia is wrong (again). In my experience, all PSK31 (DX and non-DX) is centered around 7.036, and QRP CW is half near 7.040 and half elsewhere. And does anybody ever hear PSK31 at 7.080 or higher? I don't. Similar situations exist on other bands, too. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
