Re: [Elecraft] K3 APF FINE Tuning
This occurs in running in a contest, where you have positioned the hard skirts of roofing and regular DSP, to keep out the strong stations just above and just below. A weak station down in the noise calls you slightly up or down, but not out of your running passband. If you tune the RX frequency up or down to bring him into a fixed center passband APF, then you let one of the strong stations up or down under the roofing filter and it will start pumping AGC and trash the weak signal. Tuning on the APF and tuning its obvious audio center up or down, without moving the RX frequency, to the remembered frequency of the weak signal, peaks him right up without letting the up and down QRM under the roofing filter. Also it is easier to remember the audio tone of the weak signal if it fades and move the APF peak, than tune the RX and hold the audio peak constant. Unless you know in your head that you have only tuned 70 Hz of the 110 off frequency, and have a calibrated feel to the knob, you can't move the RX and APF peak to where the station was when it sank under the noise. 73, Guy. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Beta Release: APF for CW; "Fast Monitor" & improved TX gate for voice modes
Yes APF came out reel good, very well done! Don´t even know if it was this good on the FT-1000D, at least not on the units I did own. Now if only AM RX was to be fixed I would be happy, as it is right now AM (not sync AM) RX is more or less useless. It "got broken" in the DSP code way back. I have written about this problem before and I´m not going to repeat myself any further. / Jim SM2EKM - On 2010-11-04 00:17, Bill [NS4C] wrote: > > I loaded the beta firmware so I could see what all the APF buzz was about. > 3D2A was spotted on 18070 so I turned the beam and he was there in and out > of my noise level. [Elecraft] [K3/P3] TX signal position
With new firmware 4.17, what is the significance of the position of your transmitted CW signal on the P3? It moves when either WIDTH, PITCH, or ALT (switching between CW and CW REV) is changed. Re: [Elecraft] K3 APF FINE Tuning
I spoke too quickly. Wayne is referring to changing the AFP freq. I was referring to tuning the RX. Tuning one or both is aimed at getting the desired signal to the peak. .001 is very useful for really weak sigs. Having the shift control move the APF 5 hz vs 10 hz would also help in combination. 73 - Steve WB6RSE On Nov 3, 2010, at 7:59 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: I'm not clear on the value of changing the APF center frequency independently of the actual signal center frequency. Re: [Elecraft] K3 APF FINE Tuning
Ron - I'm referring to tuning the RX to hit the peak of the APF, not the APF. The ability to do it .001 with FINE tuning (or .05 in the next release TBD) allowed me to tune to a peak a very weak 9UØA on 80m that was much more difficult and less effective with the tuning at .01. Especially when the target is on for very short transmissions. [Elecraft] [K2] Question about tuning K2 for SSB..
Hi All, I'm learning to drive my new K2/100 and have reached a conceptual block that will betray a fundamental lack of understanding, but here goes anyway... My K2 dial frequency reads about 20hz under the actual frequency - receiving WWV on 1.00, the LCD frequency readout reads .98. That's all good. But, when I'm working SSB and want to make contact with a station already transmitting on a particular frequency, how do I handle the tuning to ensure I'm transmitting on his frequency exactly. Do I tune my K2 to achieve best resolved audio receiving his signal, regardless of the actual frequency displayed on my LCD, then assume when I hit TX I'll be transmitting exactly on his frequency? Or is there any other way to account for this small 20hz shift, to make sure I'm transmitting exactly where he is tuned? I'm running my K2 with the MH-2 mic and last night got reports of "muffled" audio. I suspect I'll need to tweak the SSB filter passband position- the position looks good on Spectrogram with the low frequency roll off for the SSB Tx filter sitting around 300hz, but I understand it may need some "optimising" with live audio monitoring. I did wonder if my tuning technique was contributing to the problem - perhaps I'm not transmitting exactly where they're listening. I hope that makes sense. Any advice always gratefully received, 73, John VK7JB -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-Question-about-tuning-K2-for-SSB-tp5703977p5703977.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] APF & Newest Beta Firmware
I hardly ever post anything, anywhere. I'm just too busy at work. I do read the emails everyday from Nabble. I'm really not a good CW operator. But the newest APF is truly amazing. I successfully loaded the update. Clicked on a CW station using HRD's cluster listing. Turned on the APF and said "wow" out loud! I was blown away. If you look at my station as shown on QRZ.com, you will see that I have several transceivers. Some were much more expensive. I absolutely love the K3. It will be my last transceiver. Every once in a while the magicians at Elecraft add some more tricks to the K3. For that, I say thank you for making a fun, easy to use, fully featured transceiver that just keeps getting better. 73, Jim Heath W6LG licensed in 1963 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/APF-Newest-Beta-Firmware-tp5703849p5703849.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] (OT) - Power Supply for SGC-237 - SGC's FINAL DETERMINATION
Look what just showed up in my email from SGC: After getting together with one of our other technicians and using your Astron RS-20M, He seems to think that particular power supply should be okay with the coupler. So I would use your Astron power supply that is connected to your radio for your power supply. [Elecraft] 4.17 failed to load on first attempt
Elecrafters, I noticed that when the K3Utility loaded the new firmware, it skipped to load DSP1. MCU and DSP1 were labeled N/A. The SUB-RX was ON at that time. After the Utility had finished I power-cycled the K3. MCU then was labeled 4.17, DSP1 still N/A. I then loaded just DSP1 with the SUB-RX OFF. All ok now. Wew! K3Utility is the Linux version. I am listening to 5R8X on 80m with the APF and am VERY impressed. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Beta Release: APF for CW; "Fast Monitor" & improved TX gate for voice modes
WOW!! I wondered who the pile up was for around 14017 or so. Tuning down a couple, I heard an S[minus]1 signal I couldn't make out, sounded like 9A something, sometimes GT[?]. Figuring there wouldn't be a huge pileup on a 9A, I engaged APF. Right out of the noise, maybe S3 and easily copyable was 9U0A. As usual, K6RIM beat me to him. I'm still digesting all the NR/NB/AGC stuff "The Smiths" sent me, I'm thinking this can only get better. [Elecraft] K3 Beta Release: APF for CW; "Fast Monitor" & improved TX gate for voice modes
I loaded the beta firmware so I could see what all the APF buzz was about. 3D2A was spotted on 18070 so I turned the beam and he was there in and out of my noise level. I turned on the new APF function and peaked the CW signal. He was now 100% copy. Turned APF off and he was in and out of my noise level again. Now I understand how good of a tool APF is for weak signal CW. BTW The 3D2A is in my log. Hi Wayne, never having used this sort of function before, I am pleased with how well it works just the few minutes of playing with it. Thanks much. > * NARROW AF FILTER IMPROVEMENT: Adjusting SHIFT and > WIDTH when using very narrow DSP filters no longer causes > ‘pop’ artifacts. Perhaps I had not noticed them before, but in tweaking on CW using the WIDTH control, I can hear a slight audio pop on occasion which sounds a bit like a scratchy pot and is certainly not the slight drop in audio as the filters are switched in and out. I notice it only when going from 150 to 100 Hz bandwidth but not back again. It does not do it all the time, however. I can repeat it if I widen to about 450 Hz and then narrow it back down to 100 Hz and the slight "tick" is there each time the switch is made from 150 to 100 Hz. My K3 is a single receiver with 2.7, 2.1 kHz, and 500 and 200 Hz filters installed. BTW, are there filter plots for the Elecraft 5 pole filter available? 73, de Nate >> -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears this is true." Thanks so much, Wayne, Lyle and the Elecraft crew who worked on this, and thanks to the alpha and early beta testers. I downloaded the beta version earlier this afternoon and used it for a couple of hours of CW operation. Fantastic! Have not had anything like this since my FT-1000 days. My 7800 APF is a virtual joke. Again, Elecraft continues to provide continuous improvements and enhancements to an already great radio. [Elecraft] K3 Beta Release: APF for CW; "Fast Monitor" & improved TX gate for voice modes
K3 beta-test firmware revision 4.17 (with DSP rev. 2.65) is now available. This release includes our new APF (audio peaking filter) for CW mode, which has been helping K3 field testers work "extreme" weak DX for the past several days. For voice modes, there's a "Fast Monitor" option (TX voice monitor without the processing delay). Also included is a much-improved TX Noise Gate. See detailed release notes below. Please send any questions to k3supp...@elecraft.com. For instructions on how to load beta firmware, see: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 4.17 / DSP 2.65 / FPF 1.14, 11-2-2010 NOTE: Be sure to install all firmware files for this release, including FPF 1.14. Otherwise your menu text will be incorrect. * APF (AUDIO PEAKING FILTER) ADDED: APF provides enhanced copy of weak signals in CW mode, and is especially useful when signals are at the noise level. The K3’s APF is patterned after the most successful analog APF implementations, and is equally effective in user tests. To use APF, make sure CONFIG:DUAL PB is set to APF. (This is the default. “NOR” restores the original DUAL PB function.) Then hold DUAL PB to turn APF on/off. A special DSP graphic display is used to show that APF is in effect. At the time APF is activated, the regular I.F. SHIFT setting, if any, is “frozen,” and SHIFT then controls the center pitch of the APF filter in 10-Hz steps. APF is independent for the main and sub receivers, as well as for presets I and II. Switching between these two presets is a convenient way of turning APF on/off quickly. * ADDED VOICE TX “FAST MONITOR”: Normally the voice monitor includes a ~20-ms delay, which is necessary to hear how your on-air signal will sound (with compression, etc.). If you prefer to not hear any delay in the voice monitor, set CONFIG:TX MON to FAST. Note: You’ll still hear the delayed and processed monitor if you adjust the MIC, CMP, TX EQ or TX GATE settings while transmitting. * TX NOISE GATE IMPROVEMENT: The Noise Gate/Downward Expander for voice modes has smoother response and much improved performance near the threshold. * NARROW AF FILTER IMPROVEMENT: Adjusting SHIFT and WIDTH when using very narrow DSP filters no longer causes ‘pop’ artifacts. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] (OT) - Power Supply for SGC-237
I, too, used my Astron SS-30 and Samlec SEC1225 power supplies for years to direct feed (via the coax) my SG-230 without a single problem. I'm not sure that the warning you read was even in the manual for the SG-230 when I bought mine back in 1987. Looking at the wide range of other logos they offer, I'd be rather surprised if they have authorization for any of them ... including Elecraft. [Elecraft] Elecraft ad gear
If you're looking for Elecraft branded ad gear, check Ebay, and search for Elecraft. Eazyprint sells caps, shirts and coffee mugs, all with the Elecraft name, logo and your call. I ordered on a Monday, and received my order the next Tuesday. The mug I bought has the Elecraft name, a picture of the K3 and my call. And I don't even drink coffee. The downside is, for each item you purchase, you'll have to add about $10 for the seat on the airplane. I'm not associated with the company, just a satisfied customer. Now we just need Wayne and Eric to come up with a secret 'Elecraft handshake' so we can spot the posers at hamfests. 73 de Dana W8DH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] (OT) - Power Supply for SGC-237
Plus Astrons have excellent overvoltage protection. The only RFI-induced malfunction I've ever been able to induce in an Astron is to trip that protector. It's a "crowbar" circuit that shuts of the output completely if it detects an over-voltage (typically something close to 15 VDC) on the output of a 13.8V supply. I've seen them trip when running at a commercial mountain top repeater after a nearby lightning strike and in my shack when I don't have everything grounded and have an RF-rich environment feeding an end fed wire at a voltage loop so it makes my fluorescent desk light blink, Hi! In any case, no voltage above the crowbar limit ever got out of the supply and simply switching the supply off, then on again reset it. (Automatic reset circuits are often used on those mountain top units.) This doesn't make any sense to me. Astrons and many others have been widely used in ham stations for decades, and these are all regulated supplies. Some are switchers, some are not. Indeed, that vast majority of 12V power supplies used by hams, and by commercial radio systems are regulated supplies. Rather, I strongly suspect that someone at SGC has a huge blank spot in the areas of RFI, the bonding of DC power lines, and how that DC power is obtained to provide power for accessories. This is an issue that W4TV has had to address with his various interface products. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] [K2] LCD peel off???
Don't want to seem stupid, but it's really a critic component. On the manual it's written to peel off any protective film on the back of lcd. I tried to use my finger nail on a corner but it seem really difficult to peel off wha i see on the back of my lcd. Due to this i'm not able to understand if the gray film you can see in the images must be left where it is and on my back part of lcd there is no protective film or if i have to be more strong to peel off the gray film. http://it.tinypic.com/r/2ylr3hi/7 http://it.tinypic.com/r/35n7rbl/7 http://it.tinypic.com/r/2h54ls6/7 any thanks as usual IZ2NYY Giuseppe "Pippo" Sorrentino Milano ITALY __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
