[Elecraft] LCD TV Causing RFI
Hi, I have a Samsung 46" LCD TV that is causing RFI on the 20m PSK calling freq (14.070). My station setup is a K2 powered by an Alinco DM-330 switcher. The interference shows up in the waterfall display; it's about 1000 Hz wide right on 14.070 (the coincidence is weird), doesn't move, and doesn't show up anywhere else that I've found thus far. It's not overwhelming; I can still decode signals through it. It vanishes as soon as the TV is turned off. The offending TV is not close to the shack: TV is on the first floor, shack on the second floor (on the opposite side of the house), antenna in the attic. The TV is using cable with a DVR. It's one of those things that I "can live with," but would prefer solving the problem. The TV was purchased in Feb 2009, so it's too old to return, too new to replace. As always, thanks for any suggestions. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Noise Blanker problem
Brian, A Not Installed indication for any K2 option indicates a problem with either that option's microprocessor or a continuity on the AUXBUS signal. Check the soldering, especially at the KNB2 firmware chip pin 1, as well as the other pins of the firmware chip. The other possibilities are the 4 MHz resonator or the firmware chip itself. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/29/2011 9:12 PM, Brian Denley wrote: > I am still getting the Not Installed message with the KNB2. Re: [Elecraft] K3 APF Problem???
Make sure that the front panel code is also updated. The proper version for 4.25 is 1.14. Also make sure the proper DSP table is present when you update; it should be DTBL0014.HEX. If all the versions aren't synchronized you can have problems like you describe. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Firmware 4.25 / MicroHAM / N1MM 11.1.4
Thanks to all of the responses. "Dual RX always on" helps with the sub-rx being generally left on. However, the VFO-B window was still 'popping' at each CQ, and with dual-rx-always-on, a noticable 'chunk' is heard in the audio at the tx-to-rx transition. Oh, and the VFO-B window was still being displayed with buttons having no legends on them. With so many configurable features between the K3, N1MM, microham router, etc. I can understand the assumption of "pebkac" on the part of responders, so I continued to try to solve this. I've been using N1MM for a very long time, and can usually diagnose it pretty well. What I did find that solved the 'VFO-B' window popping with no labels issue was changing (in the configurer tab) from SO2V to SO1V, saving, sending CQ, then immediately switching back to SO2V. Let me repeat that: Changing from SO2V to SO1V, then back to SO2V, should (in theory) produce no different results. However, it did/does. And for now, it solves my issue. If someone else encounters this issue, perhaps this benign suggestion of changing from SO2V to SO1V and back again will help. [Elecraft] K3 APF Problem???
Hi Folks, After watching the progress of APF for a few months I decided it was time to upgrade to the latest firmware (4.25) and give it a try. When pressing the DUAL PB there is a LOUD clip and the CW is gone. Turning the SHIFT control products one LOUD clip for each 50 Hz step. I went to CONFIG and could not find DUEL PB to ascertain APF was selected. Now this gets complicated so follow closely. There is no DUEL PB in the VFO B space between DIGOUT1 and EXT ALC as the latest manual (D9 - Pg 55) indicates there should be. However, when EXT ALC is selected APF is show in VFO A. It appears that in my K3 all values in the second column of the manual (displayed in VFO A) beginning with EXT ALC is shifted up one entry from the first column of the manual (displayed in VFO B). BTW, turning VFO A knob does change the VFO A display from APF to DUEL PB and back again when in EXT ALC. I have taken a picture and will be happy to display it someplace if anyone is interested in seeing it. I've read the verbiage on page 35 about APF and there is nothing there that seems to help. [Elecraft] K3: ERR 12V vs current draw
I have come to no conclusions re my earlier posts. The K3 quit on QSO #3 in the 160 last night, again with the 'ERR 12V' message, neccesitating a switch to the Pro-3 (my Mk.V is out on loan). Talk about day and night! My 'power off' current drain had been back to 0 amps over the last couple of weeks, but after the ERR 12V shutdown, the 'power off' current was 1.7 amps again. Something is definitely rotten in OZ (no offence to the Danes)! At least I'll have more details for the K3 Support gang to work with. I have not yet changed the KPA3/100 pins as they suggested. I can't see how they would cause the mysterious current drain. It can be useful if you have a noise source right in the shack, like a computer. I used a short dipole installed near the power drop to my house, where most of the noise seemed to be coming from. You can use the built-in whip or you can connect an external noise antenna. Just don't make it resonant or put it too close to the transmitting antenna if you run high power! Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 "birdie" at 21029
Hi Bruce, During my "Kill Birdie" project with my K2/100 #3255, I found that all of the "birdies" which disappear if the KPA100 is *not* in use were caused by the fundamental or a harmonic of the KPA100's HV Bias oscillator mixing with the fundamental or harmonic of one or more of the other oscillators in the K2. Any product of this mixing will be heard as a "birdie" if (1) the frequency of the product is "in band" and the receiver is tuned to the same frequency, or (2) the frequency of the product is the same as that of a spurious response of the receiver when tuned to the frequency at which the "birdie" is heard. Of course the product must be strong enough to be heard above the noise floor. Unfortunately I do not have my notes here, but because your "birdie" steps I suspect that the PLL Reference oscillator could be part of the mix. In my K2/100 the HV Bias oscillator signal was getting into the K2's RF board via the KPA100's diode TR switch and the ribbon cable. Because this rural QTH is very quiet I could hear this type of "birdie" on different bands, which forced me into repackaging the HV Bias oscillator into its own shielded enclosure, which solved my problem. 73, Geoff GM4ESD "K1FFX" wrote on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 3:02 PM: > Additional info: > > The "birdie" also goes away when the power setting is clicked below > 11 watts. > > - Bruce > > > - > Bruce Rosen > K1FFX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 "birdie" at 21029
Bruce, That is a bit of a mystery. I just checked a newly built K2/100 and could find no instance of any response at all with no antenna connected. There are no oscillators switched in and out when the KPA100 is active - both oscillators in the KPA100 run whether the KPA100 is in-line or not. Have you grounded the crystal cases? Try varying the 4 MHz oscillator capacitor and see if the frequency shifts. If so, ground the crystal case near the bottom to see if that takes care of it - I am speculating that some of the oscillator energy could be picked up by the T/R switch when the KPA100 is in-line. The only thing that changes between PA on and off (or with power above/below 11 watts) is that the receive signal path flows through the T/R switch instead of through the straight-thru path from relay K1 to K2. You might want to check all the components in the T/R switch for proper value, diode orientation, and good soldering. The components associated with the T/R switch are shown in the schematic at the top of sheet 2. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/29/2011 10:02 AM, K1FFX wrote: > Additional info: > > The "birdie" also goes away when the power setting is clicked below > 11 watts. > > - Bruce > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and MFJ 1026 hookup
The KXV3 has an RX IN and RX OUT connector. When the K3's RX ANT button is pushed, the line from the K3's t/r switch to the receiver input is connected to the RX OUT connector, and the RX IN connector goes to the the receiver input. Therefore, you connect a separate noise antenna to the canceler noise antenna input, the canceler's 'transceiver' connector to the KXV3 RX IN connector, and the canceler's 'antenna' connector to the KXV3 RX OUT connector. The result is to pass the already switched receiver input (which ultimately goes to the main antenna) through the canceler into the receiver. You must push the RX ANT button on the K3 for this to work. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter for PSk and RTTY question
Don, I have the Inrad 8 pole 500hz and also the 8 pole 250.Either is a big improvement over the 1.8, which was previously my narrowest filter for PSK, RTTY, and CW. The 250 is about the narrowest usable filter for RTTY and works great for PSK. The 500 will support the 500 hz data modes like Olivia ,etc., and is a good all around, day to day, data/digital/CW filter. The 500 is very versatile and I use it a lot for casual work, however in RTTY contesting I use the 250 almost exclusively. The 250 is also particularly good at isolating a weak PSK31 station in the presence of "QRO" PSK signals near by. None of these have any impact on TX bandwidth. On PSK, if you set up as recommended with 4 bars of ALC you will have a very clean signal. 73 Jack KZ5A K3 #4165 On 1/28/2011 11:33 AM, gold...@charter.net wrote: > Dear All, > > I am debating if I should get a narrow filter for PSK and RTTY work. > Currently the most narrow filter I have is the 8 pole 2.1. > > I am thinking about an Inrad 8 pole 500 hz to add to the K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3: APF effectiveness
Hey Ralph & Robby, After all the contest activity on 160 yesterday, after I shut down I had trouble getting to sleep because I was hearing all those phantom CW calls for several hours before it subsided. Seriously I was able to hear stations right on the noise that I would never have been able to pull out with the IC-7000 I used to have. Robby, I distinctly remember working you last night and you had a nice clean signal (ref your other post on audio distortion). It must have been just on receive. I didn't notice that problem here and there were many-many S9+20 and bigger signals showing on the P3 and I had the span set to 6KHz (3-C+3). Another plus for the K3/P3, was able to find those weak stations in between the +20 guys and work them thanks to the super selectivity of the K3. 400 Hz 8 pole filter is sufficient to keep out the adjacent frequency strong signals even from an Alpha 9500 running 1K+ less than 5 blocks from me. Never even knew he was in the contest until I rolled across him. Centered up, he bloomed the P3's trace up pretty wide, but I could still copy S3 to S5 signals within 1KHz either side of him without any IMD problems. Couldn't see the weaker signals on the P3 due to his overload, but had no trouble working them. Thanks very much for your time Mike VE3WDM http://ve3wdm.blogspot.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
