This is a little old from your post, but they are very active [4-digit
serial numbers] in the WPX RTTY on all the contest bands. I worked them
on 40 around 1200Z 13 Feb. They were on about 7088, QSX 7097-7100.
Almost S9 in N. Cal on a not-so-special sloping Vee. Answered on the
2nd call. Don't call on their frequency :-) I'm running a K3 driving
an amp to about 500W [trying to get used to how it will be with a
KPA500], N1MM and MMTTY. I'm sure you'll find them on 40 early on the
13th [NA data] and on 20 and 15 on Sunday

[Elecraft] 2 M Transverter Stabliization

2011-02-13 Thread Edward R. Cole
Chuck,

You may have read that I am waiting delivery of a new 144/28
transverter from DEMI (maybe this week). It is a prototype
dual-receive unit and there is a possibility it will include an ext.
ref. locking LO. DEMI is using me as alpha-tester of this
transverter so putting a lot of new stuff in it.

I asked to be a beta-tester for the K3 ext. ref. modification, but
have not received anything.

Wayne, Eric,

I'm referring to some concerns described by inputs to the Elecraft
Reflector, about not only the stability but also L.O. calibration of
the 2 M xvrtr, K144XV and probably the XV144. I wonder if in the
near future you might consider phase locking their L.O.s to a 10 MHz
OCXO. I understand that there are some Beta units in the field that
are locking the K3's TCXO to 10 MHz (when can I get one?). It would
also be great if you could do the same for your 2M xvrtrs, so that
they could be synched to the same stable source.

Many of us VHF/UHF/Microwave weak signal and EME
experimenters/operators, are now phase locking (via a 10 MHz source)
our xvrtrs to those upper bands, most of which use a 2 M IF. At
present I don't believe that there are any other manufactures or
vendors doing this yet, for 2 M xvrtrs. It would really be a boon to
have a self contained, ultra stable and accurate, 2M IF system the
quality of a K3.

Thank you - I've been enjoying a very similar 'advanced split' function
since the day (literally) that macro programming became available.

I love the K3's macro functions, but this is a shared K3 and we often
have guest operators too, so I hate the proliferation of tacky little
printed labels on the K3's front panel.

What we're now discussing is the logical next step: an option to move
that personalized 'advanced split' function back onto the SPLIT button
where it belongs.

For ongoing reference:

* The feature request under discussion is for config options to make the
SPLIT (hold AB), (tap REV) and (hold REV) buttons available as
additional user programmable macro keys.

* The reason for requesting this enhancement as a config option is to
avoid any impact upon users who prefer the existing SPLIT and REV
behavior (and hopefully to avoid tank tracks on the front lawn :-)

[Elecraft] S9DX and other dxpedition tips

2011-02-13 Thread cx7tt
Like others, I have used DX summit web site special 'search' tab to
input the dx and see what bands they are on at the present time. This
works best when sitting on the couch waiting for them to show on a
certain band. You will have to hit 'search' again to refresh every so often.

For those who are struggling, even if you have not worked them, go to
their online log, input your call, you wont be there but it will show
your zone. Click on the propagation to that zone and get a pretty good
idea what have been the best times to work them on diff bands. Of
course, in the US, the zones are pretty big but it's a good guide as to
propagation for your area.

Finally, listen, listen to try to discern their operating pattern. I
dont have a P3 (yet) but have found the sub RX to be invaluable.

The 'blue' grades of Loctite are designed to allow removal with hand

Maybe you could try one of the 'pink' grades of Loctite which are

[Elecraft] Serial port control line CW keying with KPA100 supplied cable - where to find the modification schematic ?

Hi there,

On page 63 in the KPA100 manual (CW keying and PTT-section) there is a
vague comment at the end of the section referring to the Elecraft
homepage for references to the NPN-transistor and diode circuit that can
be added to the K2 / 100 to use the white wire in the Serial cable for
CW keying of the rig, while keeping at the same time the possibility to

[Elecraft] K2 - S-Meter alignment/Bargraph segements

2011-02-13 Thread Löbel
Dear OM's,

thank you for reading this.

Yesterday I finished the control board, the front panel board and

the first stage of the RF-board - ready for the alignment, part 1.

Yesterday I did all the steps from the manual, alignment part 1

sucessfully - even the S-Meter alignment and the bargraph current test.

Today I switched on the K2 again and the bargraphsegment number 2 was

lighting. So I decided to do the S-Meter alignemnt again.

And so the mistery began. First with CAL S LO by turning the VFO-knob

the bargraph segments hop from nr. 10 to nr. 7 and then to nr. 3

Similiar behavior with CAL S HI.

I did the GRPH BAR - Test and only saw the first 3 segments on.

Then I tried again the S-Meter alignement but no segement visible any
more

So back to the GRPH BAR - now not one segment is on

I have to mention, that I didn't changed anything from yesterday

to today an the R1 was adjusted to 3,8 Volt as shown in the manual.

Has my K2 destroyed himself or what could be the reason for that

bad behavior? All other things in the alignment part 1 still are ok.

The RF-Gain control does not change anything.

I am really thankful for every help.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - S-Meter alignment/Bargraph segements

2011-02-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Geunther,

The most likely cause of bargraph LEDs not lighting is an intermittent
soldering connection, and since some LEDs light while others do not, the
problem is most likely found on the Front Panel board.
I would suggest you re-flow the soldering of Front Panel U4, RP2, R12,
and the bargraph itself. Use a hot soldering iron and add a little new
solder to add a bit of new flux.

Examine your soldering critically, it should flow out to an almost
invisible edge line on both the solder pad and the component lead. Only
enough solder to fill the thru-plated hole is required, but I like to
see a small fillet of solder too. If there is just a lump of solder,
you have applied excess (which can hide a bad connection), use solder
wick or a de-soldering tool to remove the excess and re-solder with only
a minimum of additional solder.

If you are trying to use lead-free solder, be aware that it does not
flow very well and requires a higher than normal soldering temperature.
I would recommend that you use a 63/37 alloy lead-tin solder with a
mildly reactive flux instead of trying to struggle with the lead-free
solder. Even with much practice, I have not been able to make any
lead-free solder flow well. There is a reason that lead-free solder is
not to be used for avionics or space gear!

Don W3FPR

New headphones - specifically Heil's new ProSet with the HC6 element and

Some radios have a physical trimmer (Yaesu Mark-V) or a menu item

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Front Board and the Rework mic adapter

2011-02-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Ed,

Before you mount the metalwork to the front panel board, it is time to
install the components from your KSB2 option to that board. The KSB2
parts list will indicated the parts to go on the front panel board.
After those parts are added, the Mic Adapter can be assembled and
installed at any time - I would wait until you have finished with the
Control Board and the first Alignment and Test section. Then you can
easily add the IMA assembly. It plugs onto the K2 microphone
configuration header with no soldering there, but there is assembly for
the IMA itself. The IMA instructions have notes regarding clearances
from a capacitor on the RF board and you should check the fit between
the Front panel and the control board, so both should be present when
you install the IMA.

[Elecraft] DX spotting networks

2011-02-13 Thread r miles

If you have the internet in the shack ck. out DXSCAPE. You can choose
between US,Worldwide or JA spots. Sometimes if say S9DX has no US spots
in a while click on the WW and/or JA screens. If they are active someone
in the world will spot them. If propagation is coming soon to your area
on the band you want you'll be able to see if they are on that band
working some other part of the world. It'll at least give you a heads up.
I said this a few days ago but it's repeatable. You're gg to see more
more of these Dxpeditions using Elecraft. I wouldn't trade my K3 for
any of those heavy jobs. I told my XYL [a ham] we could get 3 of the K3s
for the price of one of those top of the line JA rigs! Only
dreaming..

[Elecraft] High SWR into Dummy load

2011-02-13 Thread DBellW6AQ
Hi, I just finished putting together my 2nd K3, downloading all the
firmware, etc., and find that while everything seems to work fine, my SWR is
astronomical -- like 15 to 1 after the antenna tuner has looked for a good
match, and that's into a 50 ohm Elecraft dummy load.

This is a K3-10, with KAT3, KDVR3, KXV3A, KIO3, KUSB.

Before I tear it apart again, I'm just wondering if there's something
obvious that I'm overlooking.

  Dave,

Check the coax between the K3 and the dummy load. Best check is to
connect an antenna analyzer to the end connnected to the K3 with the
dummy load on the other end.

Do you have the coax connected to the right antenna port?

Re: [Elecraft] T1

2011-02-13 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Way back during the field test one or two fellows pumped about 40 watts
through one, but I'm not sure what impedance the T1 was looking into.

The issues with higher powers are:

1 - Saturating the toroid cores with high currents. Need physically larger
toroids (like the KPA100/KAT3) to avoid that.

2 - Voltage breakdown ratings of the capacitors used. High voltage
capacitors tend to be physically big caps.

3 - Voltage and current handling capabilities of the relays used. Ditto 2
(above).

So if you used bigger inductors, bigger capacitors and bigger relays you can
probably go as far as you want, but it sure won't look like a T1 any longer
- it'll be much, much larger.

Of course all of those things vary widely with the SWR too. If a tuner is
used to correct nothing more than a 2:1 or 3:1 mismatch such as might be
typically seen looking into a nominally resonant antenna (like many tuners
built into rigs today), the currents and voltages will be much less than if
one tries to load a random wire or multiband doublet.

So the moral of the story is that a tuner designed to handle both power and
a wide range of impedances is a BIG tuner.

Ron AC7AC

-Original Message-

Thanks for your help just the same.
I wonder if anyone tried to modify this atu to higher power ratings, say
100 watts !

[Elecraft] [K3] reverse CW quirk (bug?)

2011-02-13 Thread Carl Clawson
Firmware version 4.25

I find that when I switch to reverse CW by holding ALT, it copies the
current filter settings to VFO B. This is odd and really not desirable...I
frequently use different filter widths in the two VFOs and I switch between
reverse and normal depending on which direction I'm tuning the band. But I
usually want different filters in the two VFOs when attacking a pileup.

[Elecraft] [K3] Diversity quirk (bug?) with A-B

2011-02-13 Thread Carl Clawson
Firmware version 4.25.

If I'm using the subreceiver in diversity mode I can set its PRE and ATT
settings indpendently of the main receiver using BSET. But if I double-tap
A-B to copy all to VFO B, the main receiver PRE and ATT settings get copied
to the subreceiver. This is very weird. These are per-receiver settings, not
per-VFO settings. In diversity mode, the subreceiver has nothing to do with
VFO B. It is perhaps a confusing terminology that BSET is used to set up
the subreceiver in diversity. The thing to keep clear is that there are
THREE sets of receiver settings in diversity mode: VFO A, VFO B, plus those
subreceiver settings that are independent of the main receiver, which are
shoehorned into the inaptly named BSET. One does not expect that third
parameter set to be altered by an A-B operation. Only BSET should be
allowed to change them.

[Elecraft] Small Loops

2011-02-13 Thread Dale Parfitt
 Hi Richard,
The small magnetic loop has a lower RDF (RX Directivity Factor- see the W8JI
site or ON4UN's LF book) than does the K9AY- so not as good using that
figure of merit: 7.2 vs 4.0
The Pixel and Wellbrook loops are nice I am sure, but you can build your own
shielded active broadband loop for $25 or so. See:
http://members.shaw.ca/ve7sl/loop.html
I have a 3' and a 7' version- pix upon request. Although they don't come
close to my Beverages, theyt are a nice RX antenna.

[Elecraft] Photos from Orlando

2011-02-13 Thread Doug Shields
Hello,

I was able to find a time when the Elecraft booth was not overrun with
folks drooling over the K line display. I got a few good pictures but I do
not have a good place to park them for public viewing. If someone has some
space available I will email my photos to you for posting. Please drop me a
note you can post them somewhere.

Eric and Lerma were very busy and there seemed to be a lot of interest
in the K3, P3, and the new amp. A friend of mine sold two top end radios
and placed his order for his K3. If you missed the Orlando Hamcation, you
missed a very good event. The weather was a little cool this year. It was
way down in the forties overnight. Fortunately, it was back to the high
fifties during the day. Borderline cold for us Floridians. I hope you can
make it next year.

[Elecraft] AFSK - PSK problem

During the WPX RTTY contest this weekend I have noticed that my K3 will jump
from AFSK A to PSK D. It happens whenever I change bands. I know it
happens at other times but did not note the circumstances during the

Other than this my K3-P3/N1MM/MMTTY configuration works great. With the P3
I did not even have to have the phones on just watched and tuned to the
scope display. I only got a couple of hundred Q's. It was not a serious
effort and I just picked low hanging fruit ;o}

  Joe,

The mode/submode are per band settings. If you did not have your Data
Mode set to AFSK-A fo all bands that you would be operating using AFSK,
then the results are as to be expected.

In other words, preset the mode and submode prior to a contest.

Hopefully all of the above information is OK. If not email me with
your corrections. Once again I was splitting wood so my hands were not
happy with me. But I need to take advantages of lulls in the storms to
make that chore easier. Splitting wood in the rain is not fun. Luckily
it has been a very mild year so my very large wood pile is mostly intact.
That means less work for next year :)
Until next week stay well,

[Elecraft] KAF2/KDSP2 impressions

2011-02-13 Thread n5bcn
Hi,

If you get a chance, do you mind emailing me your impressions of the KAF2 vs
the KDSP2? I'm interested in buying one or the other, and hoped to get the
opinion of someone who has listened to both.

Thanks,

N5BCN, Brian
