That would be a mistake.

Biggest reason is the MS Word format isn't static.
Every recent new version of MS Office has included several features
which make it incompatible with older versions.

Save a file in MS Word 2007 .docx format and MS Word 2003 wouldn't know
what to do with it.

Adobe .pdf never changes thus it's a standard.
All you have to do to add errata to the .pdf manuals is get a free .pdf
editor like PDF Creator, add the errata to an electronic version of the
manual and save it. Your manual is always up to date.

If you need hard copy, print the pages you need.

The P3 keeps track of the
preamp/attenuator status reported by the K3 so
that the dBm or S-unit display reads accurately.  That
 can lead to some
non-intuitive behavior.  For example, turning on the
 K3 preamp typically
makes the noise level on the P3 go down rather than
 up.  The reason is
that the P3 is turning down its gain to compensate for the
 increased
 gain in the K3.

However this doesn't always work correctly when switching
 the RX antenna
on the K3.  Currently the K3 does not send an update
 to the P3 if
switching antennas causes the preamp or attenuator status
 to change.
This is on Wayne's bug list.

  Ken,

Maybe I'm missing something, but I would expect the noise floor to drop
on a receiving antenna - assuming the RX antenna is a lower noise
antenna than the transmit antenna - you are looking at the atmospheric

From the wider viewpoint of optimizing the dynamic range on each band,
it would be very helpful if the required preamp/attenuator settings were
saved separately for each antenna input. Those settings would then be
'applied' to whichever receiver(s) are using that input.

Don has just shown exactly why this is needed, because it's the
*antennas* that create the variations in signal levels and background
noise.

The switch in the back part of the headphone jack (the switch that turns

[Elecraft] K2: CAT control of K2/100 with HRD

My K2/100 has been functioning well, and I am now trying for the first time to

there is continuity where there should be), turned on the port function on
the

  Curt,

Yes, the 3 pins at the rear of the switch are the ones for the switch,
and it is integral to the jack housing.
I can't recall which two of the 3 pins close the speaker circuit, but
since your speaker does not work, check continuity - the two that show
continuity are NOT the ones for the speaker - if you want a quick fix
while waiting for the replacement jack, short the two pins that are
currently open, and your speaker should come alive again. If you need
to silence the speaker, put an empty plug into the external speaker jack.

Hey Ed.
The last time I placed an order I was also looking for a tracking number but

The next time I ordered from Elecraft I asked if I could have tracking and
told them what happened the last order I placed. They then looked up my info
and found out that they did not have my email address. They told me that in
order for me to be emailed the tracking number they would need my email

a email with my tracking info.
You may want to check to see if they have your email address on file. Hope
that helps.

Ordered Wednesday, shipped via USPS Priority Friday and received today in
NC. I got both an order confirmation email on Wednesday and a shipment
confirmation email on Friday with tracking number. Nice work by both
Elecraft and USPS...I often receive small parts via First Class in 2
days...amazing for CA to NC

Went thru the advanced RF cal routine using the -33 dBm level and my unit is
now spot on for S9+40, S9 and S3. Dick K6KR will be making a few changes to
the K3 Utility's RF Cal routine and then will post an update. He has been
very QRL with Visalia, taking down a tower and preparing his house for sale
so it may be awhile. The XG3 Utility has also not yet shown up on the
Elecraft Software page:

I ordered several 7pole LP filters from CoilCraft for use with the XG3. If
this works out I will offer to make them up for any that desire one or a
set. No price set, yet. The filter boards will be installed in a short
section of 1-inch copper pipe with end caps; BNC in/out.

[Elecraft] XG3 Utility

2011-04-18 Thread David Gilbert

Any chance that the XG3 Utility could be configured for dual port
control so that it:

a. set frequency and level on the XG3

b. set frequency on K3

c. read dBV (or S-meter) from the K3 (possibly with pre-specified
averaging/settling time) and data log the result to a text file

d. increment/repeat

Re: [Elecraft] K2: CAT control of K2/100 with HRD

2011-04-18 Thread Jay
Stephen,

I am running HRD version 5.0, build 2837 with my K2/100. The KPA100 is mounted
in the K2 case and, like you, I am also running Win XP.

I did not have to make any changes to the serial cable (used with K2/10 KIO2)
or add any drivers to XP. Quite simply, I unhooked the K2/10, added the KPA100
to the K2, and reconnected the serial cable. It all magically worked.

Hope this helps.

 Hi
My K2/100 has been functioning well, and I am now trying for the first time to
use the connection on the 100W amplifier unit for CAT control with Ham Radio
Deluxe.   The K2 is serial number 6679, so apparently no modifications are
needed.  The side-tone works.  I fashioned the cable as per instructions (and
there is continuity where there should be), turned on the port function on
 the
K2, set the baud rate on HRD to 48,000.   However, the HRD is unable to read
 the
 frequency.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 custom extended sides

2011-04-18 Thread k4tmc

 Mike,

I have the ones for the K2 and K3. David was very good to work with on the K3
plates. Since he did not have any at the time, I sent him my stock side plates
and he made the new ones using those as a template. He returned the stock
plates with the new thicker plates. The new parts give both the K2 and K3 a
little more stiffness and weight, plus a nice look. Could not be happier with
David's work...

Now, this was right after I got my K3, #98. So, it has been a while. Not sure
what the status of the company is now.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: CAT control of K2/100 with HRD

2011-04-18 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Steve,

It seems you have done everything right, and have a hardware failure on
your hands.

Since you have not used the RS-232 port before - it is possible that it
did not work when the KPA100 was first built.

The first thing to check is continuity for RFC6, RFC7, and RFC8 on the
KPA100 board (near the DE-9 connector). It is also possible that U4 on
the KPA100 board has been damaged.

Yes, all the modifications for the serial port are included on any K2
control board SN 3000 and above. If you have a wire on Control Board P4
pin 1, that indicates that the wiring change was incorrectly applied to
your Control Board, and should be backed off - in that case you will
have to find what trace was really cut (it was not the trace going to
pin 25) and repair that cut with a point to point wire.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 custom extended sides

2011-04-18 Thread Jim Rhodes
I ordered a K3 set a week or so ago via email davesayl...@yahoo.com. I got a
response reasonably quickly, but there has not been enough time for them to
be shipped yet. Even with the best service. They seem to have some other
product lines, so I imagine that these are not their primary business
concern, and that is fine with me. I am planning to have them powder coated
when I get them.

Henry, could you answer a quick question? Do they require longer screws to
install?

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Manual Updates

2011-04-18 Thread Gary
Kevin (and all),
It would be a mistake but not for that reason. The newer ActiveX formatted
documents and spreadsheets are compatible with earlier versions of Word and
Excel back to 2000 if you add Microsoft's free document converter add-ons
available from:
 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx as a Compatibility
Pack. The reason it's a mistake is that it allows others to edit, perhaps
incorrectly, the content yet in some circles Elecraft could still be held
responsible and that just isn't acceptable. Their current method is a very
acceptable compromise between accuracy and cost.
