Re: [Elecraft] K3 deaf when narrow filter engaged

2011-07-09 Thread Matt Zilmer
EE INIT solves problems if the factory init didn't take. I've only
heard of that once (my K3, one of the first kits). Elecraft has the
assembly and factory handling procedures down to a hard-coded science
by now, so it should not happen at all.

Having the ref osc off by a whole bunch, for example 1 KHz, would
definitely give weird results. Normally the ref osc calibration is
pretty close - 5 to 6Hz at the outside - from what I know of it. I've
helped a few kit builders go through the paces and never seen cal
errors start out that high.

The gain and S-meter calibrations should go smoothly now that you're
past the important radio really works setup.

Enjoy your first K3 weekend! I still remember mine - CQ WW SSB using
my first K3 incarnation - a K3/10. Seven new countries under really
un-stellar conditions

You're welcome.

Problem solved -- I think

I ended up doing a factory reset (power-up while pressing/holding Shift knob
in until power up completed), EE INIT. And I just read through the rest of
your note and now see that's what you suggested!

I then went through the entire setup process.

What I did differently this time was during the reference oscillator
calibration, I found that much less of an adjustment was needed than what I
did before. In fact it was fine as-is. I'm not sure what prompted me to
adjust the oscillator before (I used WWV as an on-air reference), but this
time around, everything came out fine.

I suspect my incorrect reference oscillator adjustment explains why all
three filters appeared to have incorrect offsets.

Now the only remaining problem is getting the rig to show S9 with a 50 uV
source. The adjustment range doesn't go far enough to produce S9 on the
display. I put a new battery in the XG2 signal source, same problem. I'm
not too concerned about this one -- only mildly annoyed. This is a very
minor problem compared to what I *thought* was wrong with my filters!

Thanks for your detailed response -- appreciated.

I have heard of a lot of strange K3 symptoms, but this one is beyond
the pale. It sounds like one of the pre- or post-roofing filter
components is somehow shifting the resonance, and looking at the
schematic I just don't see how that's possible unless there is a
bypass-value in place of a regular cap. Conventional SMT assembly -
 that would not happen.

I'm no expert, but this probably is not some trouble that can be shot
over email. One of the Elecraft gang can help you narrow it down, but
it should probably be done interactively over the phone or Skype or
 whatever.

You *may* be able to avoid the additional hassle by running the EE
INIT procedure on your K3 and starting over. This will only work if
there isn't some defect in the hardware, but that is so unlikely that
running EE INIT is your best bet. See p66 of the Owner's Manual (rev
D7), or use Adobe to search for Parameter Initialization. If you
dorked a setting, then EE INIT will solve that problem and put your K3
 into its factory default settings.

Good Luck. No matter what you can or can't get done in short order,
Elecraft will assist you with any problem.

If I change the frequency offsets in the K3 (via CONFIG menu), I can dial
across the range of value offsets and peak a signal almost to the point at

 the

What are the chances all three of my filters have the wrong offsets?
  Possible but doubtful.

Is there some other setting on the K3 that I may have inadvertently

[Elecraft] Welcome to Moe's!!!

2011-07-09 Thread Rich Arland

No...we are NOT off topic!

With all this talk of cookie sheets, muffin tins, etc being pressed into
service when building Elecraft kits, I thought I'd pass along something I came
up with to alleviate the problem of keeping track of all those tiny screws,
nuts, bolts, lock washers, spacers, and other small stuff that can easily get
lost in the shuffle when building a kit.

Moe's! Yup, Moe's. In addition to some of the best Southwestern cuisine around,
they offer a wide selection of salsa and 'hot sauces when you purchase a meal.
You put these condiments into little opaque plastic cups that are provided on
the condiments bar. These 1-2 oz opaque plastic cups are perfect for holding
small parts after you sort them during inventory. You can write on the side of
the plastic cup with a black Sharpie (tm) listing what size the hardware is for
quick reference. Cost? Zero, Zip, Nada, Nothing! Just pick up a few each time
you go to Moe's and after three or four trips you;'ll have a couple years worth
of small opaque plastic parts cups to see you through many builds.

Have fun and Welcome to Moe's!!! (Burp!!)

I'm sure you know this but in ABS mode, be sure to turn both PREamp and
ATTenuator off. And be sure to start with SMTR SC = 14 before adjusting
SMTR OF for S9 (adjust so it just turns to S9 coming from S8). All of this
is in the manual but I'm just hoping you overlooked a step.

I doubt it's your XG2 but you never know! I have the XG3 and my old XG1 is
within ~2 dB of it at 50 uV. Using the latest RF Cal routine with the XG3's
-33 dBm output you can adjust the K3 so it reads perfectly at all levels in
ABS mode.

When you change the fuses, you insert the fuse holder so 220 is visible in a

beginning of the Owner's manual.

[Elecraft] RF on pipes

2011-07-09 Thread Clint
This is a bit OT but it does concern my K3. Hopefully this will not open too
big of a can-o-worms.

As an experiment to try and achieve a very low impedance ground system, I am
using 1 inch rigid copper tubing for my station and Vertical Antenna grounds
and ½ copper refer tubing to tie together my ground rods and the mains ground.

ANYWAY, I know that RF travels on the outside skin of a conductor. My
question is: Does it also travel on the inside skin? In other words, would the
impedance be the same on a round hollow tube as it would be if the tube was
slit and laid out flat?

Am I correct in assuming that in order to run the KPA-500 on 220 volts
all that is needed is to change the fuses to the provided 6 amps, wire
the correct plug on the power cord and the power supply will adjust

Re: [Elecraft] Operating KPA500 on 220V

2011-07-09 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
That is correct as far as changing between 115 and 220VAC mains goes, but
there's a little more to it than that. The power supply is not regulated, so
its output can vary depending upon the actual mains voltage supplied within
the nominal 115 or 230VAC ranges.

Secondary taps on the power transformer allow you to compensate for normal
variations in mains input voltages to produce the correct d-c output voltage
from the supply. The output voltage should be checked and the taps adjusted
as necessary any time you move the amp to a new mains outlet (or, of course,
if you switch from a 115 to a 230 VAC mains supply).

This is all described under Mains Voltage Settings in the Installation
section of the manual on pgs 6 and 7 in the Rev B manual. It's immediately
after the information on installing the fuses and the fuse holder.

The procedure involves only removing the top cover and attaching the tap
wire to the rectifier board that produces a voltage in the proper range as
indicated on the KPA500's LCD. The wires use spade connectors that require
no tools to connect.

No - HF fields cannot propagate inside an open tube because it behaves
as like a 'waveguide beyond cutoff'. Any HF EM field injected into the

Coax is different because it contains *two* conductors: the inner skin

propagate down the line.

So the answer to the OP's question is that tubing will only give him the
benefit of the larger outside skin.

Thanks Ron. I read the section several times because not having done

about 550 watts peak output (just makes this value on voice peaks) with
30 watts of drive.

[Elecraft] Headphones

2011-07-09 Thread Bill Ross
Because of a hearing loss, (I wear hearing aids) I find that wearing headphones
with the K3 (and another radios) works better for me. However, I have noticed
that I get more volume out of the built-in speaker than the various headsets I
have. With the headsets on, I find I am running the volume control just about
at max most of the time, with RF gain also at max. One of the headsets I use,
is an old RS “HI-FI” pair that cost $40. way back when, and yet, are less
sensitive than my Sony ear buds. Also, for some reason, the RS headset must
have a low freq. cutoff near the 600 Hz side tone, as I get more of a “thump”
than a sine wave tone out of them. The Sony ear buds, work better, (more volume
than the RS ones, even without my aids in) , and the side tone sounds better,
than the RS “HI-FI” headset, but, still less than the built-in speaker.

Does anyone have any experience with the “communications type headphones sold
by AES and other ham radio dealers, or that advertise in QST, CQ, etc.?

Would appreciate any guidance or advice from someone who’s “been there”.

Tnx and 73

2011-07-09 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The KPA500 does *not* forward serial data thru from the RS-232 (PC) to the
RS-232 (XCVR) connector.

The KPA500's back-panel XCVR RS-232 connector is used for those transceivers
(primarily Kenwood) that provide band data through a serial connection, if
you want the KPA500 to switch bands when the radio switches bands without
transmitting. You really don't HAVE to provide transceiver band data at
all, the KPA500 will switch very quickly on the first transmission on a new
band. The first dit will be truncated.

The KPA500's back-panel RS-232 PC connector is used for firmware load and
for remote control of the amplifier. It does not need to be connected at all
unless you need to do those functions at the moment.

gain, the signal appears or sometimes during fading, the RTTY signal
reappears on the X/Y scope.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2011-07-09 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
The weather has been quite changeable this week. High temperatures in
the mid 70s, then the mid 50s, and now back in the mid 60s. Cloudy and
cold with some rain to sunny and rather warm (apologies to those in warmer
climes) in the mid 70s. But the changeable nature with the sun and warmth
at times is a sign of the commencement of the dry season. Summer is
starting very late this year; I hope it lasts until October. The sun
brought out a large number of critters. Two days ago I saw a doe with two
tiny fawns. A mile later another doe with a fawn. Then I saw a coyote
and a covey of California quail. I have only seen one grouse thus far and
it was a female ruffed grouse. No spruce grouse lately. I have one
Steller's Jay which likes the sound of a fork on a plate. She enjoys
leftover rice and the ends to my loaves of bread.

Propagation on twenty meters was spotty this week. To the east it was
poor but to California twenty meters worked rather well. Why has it
become a local band? I heard a noise on my roof on Wednesday that sounded
like a falling branch. The wind was high so I thought the tree was simply
sloughing off dead limbs. When I went out for a look I saw the balun to
my spare G5RV hung in a branch with the feedline lying on the roof. I
have soldered that joint three times thus far and it looks like I get to
practice soldering in the wind one more time. Luckily it is much warmer
than the last time when there was snow on the roof. I should have used a
torch that time but used my Weller soldering gun instead. I may need to
drop that antenna for a more thorough refit.

If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net
please email me. I will turn the net over to you for a few minutes so you
can call areas in my skip zone. It sure would prove helpful to those I
cannot reach directly.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Hi Bill

I have been a long time user of a pair of Yaesu YH-77STA headphones. They
provide more volume than the various other Sony and Heil headphones that I
have and they are very comfortable to wear.

Re: [Elecraft] Headphones

2011-07-09 Thread KE8G
Bill,

I, too, am somewhat at a hearing deficit - loud tool die shop work, but
not yet at the hearing aid stage.

I know folks are going to say I am crazy, flame proof suit on, when I tell
you that I use a set of Frisby (model FHP-100) headphones with my K3 and
they work FANTASTIC!!. Best part is, they are cheap, I mean very cheap, I'm
talking $10-$15 cheap! I bought 3 pair of them and unfortunately had to go
to the second pair, as my youngest puppy snuck into the shack and decided to
chew on the padded ear pieces.

Now, I only run CW, so that might be the reason they work for me. I usually
have the AF gain some where around the 9:00 position, and RF is adjusted
according to the band, but never max. The headphones have a volume
adjustment inline that I use rather than moving the AF gain.

They also have a mike boom attached, and I have used it on 2 meter FM, with
local folks telling me that I sound very natural.

For what they cost, I would recommend you give them a try and if you don't
like them you are not out much. Heck, you can contact me off line, and I'll
buy them from you if you don't like them. You'll be out nothing other than
the time trying them.

Okay, enough said on this subject. Have a nice weekend.

Flame proof suit off!

[Elecraft] Cascata: a portable waterfall display project

2011-07-09 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU
I've written a waterfall display program for the Arduino microcontroller and
a 128x128 pixel display.
You can build it yourself for about $80, or make a smaller version using
smaller parts and put it in a box for use with your KX1, K2, or KX3.

See it here: http://wa5znu.org/2011/07/cascata

[Elecraft] K2 Internal Speaker versus Internal Battery

2011-07-09 Thread vicki glover
Just got done wiring up the speaker on the top cover and looked at the
instructions for the internal battery kit and first thing instructed is to
DISCONNECT the speaker. Unless I've missed it, nowwhere do the instructions
indicate that the speaker is to be re-connected. If this is the case, it's a
bummer. Advice from anyone?

The instructions don't specifically say it, but it is supposed to be
reconnected after installing the battery holder.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Internal Speaker versus Internal Battery

2011-07-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Mike,

Logic should be inserted. The instructions do include a step to
Reinstall the top and bottom covers on page 8.
That would logically include plugging in the speaker, and if installed,
the KAT2 and KIO2 as well before screwing the top cover in place. There
are times when a few bit of logic must be inserted. Yes, if you want
the speaker to work, logic says that you must plug it into the same
place from which it was removed.

What didn't help? A few explanatory words are usually required. A
simple statement that it didn't work is never helpful and will not
generate any additional assistance.

I also have a Begali Simplex Mono but much prefer the N3ZN ZN-SL (both are
single levers). I'm upset with Begali because my paddle had a dissimilar
metals problem with the contacts (a fundamental design flaw). Over time
these acted as diodes and caused keying problems (and I certainly don't need
any help in creating sending errors!) I contacted Begali numerous times
about replacement contacts but never got so much as a reply to my emails.
This problem has since been solved in production by using silver contacts
but my Begali sits unused because I don't want to sell it as is and I have
no way to fix it because of the poor customer service. Too bad they don't
provide service like Elecraft!
