Re: [Elecraft] K3 deaf when narrow filter engaged
EE INIT solves problems if the factory init didn't take. I've only heard of that once (my K3, one of the first kits). Elecraft has the assembly and factory handling procedures down to a hard-coded science by now, so it should not happen at all. Having the ref osc off by a whole bunch, for example 1 KHz, would definitely give weird results. Normally the ref osc calibration is pretty close - 5 to 6Hz at the outside - from what I know of it. I've helped a few kit builders go through the paces and never seen cal errors start out that high. The gain and S-meter calibrations should go smoothly now that you're past the important radio really works setup. Enjoy your first K3 weekend! I still remember mine - CQ WW SSB using my first K3 incarnation - a K3/10. Seven new countries under really un-stellar conditions You're welcome. 73, matt W6NIA On Sat, 09 Jul 2011 00:44:33 -0400, you wrote: Problem solved -- I think I ended up doing a factory reset (power-up while pressing/holding Shift knob in until power up completed), EE INIT. And I just read through the rest of your note and now see that's what you suggested! I then went through the entire setup process. What I did differently this time was during the reference oscillator calibration, I found that much less of an adjustment was needed than what I did before. In fact it was fine as-is. I'm not sure what prompted me to adjust the oscillator before (I used WWV as an on-air reference), but this time around, everything came out fine. I suspect my incorrect reference oscillator adjustment explains why all three filters appeared to have incorrect offsets. Now the only remaining problem is getting the rig to show S9 with a 50 uV source. The adjustment range doesn't go far enough to produce S9 on the display. I put a new battery in the XG2 signal source, same problem. I'm not too concerned about this one -- only mildly annoyed. This is a very minor problem compared to what I *thought* was wrong with my filters! Thanks for your detailed response -- appreciated. --Andrew, NV1B On Sat, Jul 9, 2011 at 12:33 AM, Matt Zilmer mzil...@verizon.net wrote: The chances of that are negligible. It sounds like one of the pre- or post-roofing filter components is somehow shifting the resonance, and looking at the schematic I just don't see how that's possible unless there is a bypass-value in place of a regular cap. Conventional SMT assembly - that would not happen. I'm no expert, but this probably is not some trouble that can be shot over email. One of the Elecraft gang can help you narrow it down, but it should probably be done interactively over the phone or Skype or whatever. You *may* be able to avoid the additional hassle by running the EE INIT procedure on your K3 and starting over. This will only work if there isn't some defect in the hardware, but that is so unlikely that running EE INIT is your best bet. See p66 of the Owner's Manual (rev D7), or use Adobe to search for Parameter Initialization. If you dorked a setting, then EE INIT will solve that problem and put your K3 into its factory default settings. Good Luck. No matter what you can or can't get done in short order, Elecraft will assist you with any problem. 73, matt W6NIA K3 #24 == On Fri, 08 Jul 2011 23:40:40 -0400, you wrote: Filter placements are correct, and no empty slots are enabled -- I've done the setup both ways: manually via CONFIG on the K3 itself, and via the K3 utility. Here's the odd part: If I change the frequency offsets in the K3 (via CONFIG menu), I can dial across the range of value offsets and peak a signal almost to the point at which things sound like they're operating properly. Same thing happens for 3 of my filters -- the 2.7k, 400 Hz and 200 Hz. In all cases the specified offset is not the one value that gives the strongest signal. Using the specified offsets, it seems like the signal is not properly centered in the passband. What are the chances all three of my filters have the wrong offsets? Possible but doubtful. Is there some other setting on the K3 that I may have inadvertently tweaked during calibration that would have thrown off all filters? I'm stumped. --Andrew, NV1B .. [Elecraft] Welcome to Moe's!!!
No...we are NOT off topic! With all this talk of cookie sheets, muffin tins, etc being pressed into service when building Elecraft kits, I thought I'd pass along something I came up with to alleviate the problem of keeping track of all those tiny screws, nuts, bolts, lock washers, spacers, and other small stuff that can easily get lost in the shuffle when building a kit. Moe's! Yup, Moe's. In addition to some of the best Southwestern cuisine around, they offer a wide selection of salsa and 'hot sauces when you purchase a meal. You put these condiments into little opaque plastic cups that are provided on the condiments bar. These 1-2 oz opaque plastic cups are perfect for holding small parts after you sort them during inventory. You can write on the side of the plastic cup with a black Sharpie (tm) listing what size the hardware is for quick reference. Cost? Zero, Zip, Nada, Nothing! Just pick up a few each time you go to Moe's and after three or four trips you;'ll have a couple years worth of small opaque plastic parts cups to see you through many builds. I'm sure you know this but in ABS mode, be sure to turn both PREamp and ATTenuator off. And be sure to start with SMTR SC = 14 before adjusting SMTR OF for S9 (adjust so it just turns to S9 coming from S8). All of this is in the manual but I'm just hoping you overlooked a step. I doubt it's your XG2 but you never know! I have the XG3 and my old XG1 is within ~2 dB of it at 50 uV. Re: [Elecraft] Operating KPA500 on 220V
That is correct as far as changing between 115 and 220VAC mains goes, but there's a little more to it than that. The power supply is not regulated, so its output can vary depending upon the actual mains voltage supplied within the nominal 115 or 230VAC ranges. Secondary taps on the power transformer allow you to compensate for normal variations in mains input voltages to produce the correct d-c output voltage from the supply. The output voltage should be checked and the taps adjusted as necessary any time you move the amp to a new mains outlet (or, of course, if you switch from a 115 to a 230 VAC mains supply). This is all described under Mains Voltage Settings in the Installation section of the manual on pgs 6 and 7 in the Rev B manual. It's immediately after the information on installing the fuses and the fuse holder. The procedure involves only removing the top cover and attaching the tap wire to the rectifier board that produces a voltage in the proper range as indicated on the KPA500's LCD. The wires use spade connectors that require no tools to connect. No - HF fields cannot propagate inside an open tube because it behaves as like a 'waveguide beyond cutoff'. Any HF EM field injected into the open end will only penetrate a very short distance inside before it decays away. Re: [Elecraft] Operating KPA500 on 220V
Thanks Ron. I read the section several times because not having done anything like this before made me a little nervous. I wanted be sure I wasn't missing anything. My two other amps require changing lead configurations as well as fuses. My HV is now 72 volts with the KPA-500 plugged into a 220v outlet. So that's just shy of midrange. I get about 550 watts peak output (just makes this value on voice peaks) with 30 watts of drive. 73, Doug -- K0DXV On 7/9/2011 12:11 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: That is correct as far as changing between 115 and 220VAC mains goes, but there's a little more to it than that. Because of a hearing loss, (I wear hearing aids) I find that wearing headphones with the K3 (and another radios) works better for me. However, I have noticed that I get more volume out of the built-in speaker than the various headsets I have. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Assy Man Rev B, and Programmer's Reference uploaded
The KPA500 does *not* forward serial data thru from the RS-232 (PC) to the RS-232 (XCVR) connector. The KPA500's back-panel XCVR RS-232 connector is used for those transceivers (primarily Kenwood) that provide band data through a serial connection, if you want the KPA500 to switch bands when the radio switches bands without transmitting. You really don't HAVE to provide transceiver band data at all, the KPA500 will switch very quickly on the first transmission on a new band. The first dit will be truncated. The KPA500's back-panel RS-232 PC connector is used for firmware load and for remote control of the amplifier. It does not need to be connected at all unless you need to do those functions at the moment. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of M Cresap Sent: Saturday, July 09, 2011 2:04 PM To: Elecraft Reflector; e...@elecraft.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Assy Man Rev B, and Programmer's Reference uploaded If I hook up the KPA500 RS-232 P line to the PC, and the KPA500 RS-232 X line to the K3, will commands from the PC to/from the K3 be successfully relayed through the KPA500? A hollow conductor is not analogous to a coaxial cable. It has no center conductor. In the case of the hollow conductor (copper pipe), current will flow on the outside surface only. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The weather has been quite changeable this week. High temperatures in the mid 70s, then the mid 50s, and now back in the mid 60s. Cloudy and cold with some rain to sunny and rather warm (apologies to those in warmer climes) in the mid 70s. But the changeable nature with the sun and warmth at times is a sign of the commencement of the dry season. Summer is starting very late this year; I hope it lasts until October. The sun brought out a large number of critters. Two days ago I saw a doe with two tiny fawns. A mile later another doe with a fawn. Then I saw a coyote and a covey of California quail. I have only seen one grouse thus far and it was a female ruffed grouse. No spruce grouse lately. I have one Steller's Jay which likes the sound of a fork on a plate. She enjoys leftover rice and the ends to my loaves of bread. Propagation on twenty meters was spotty this week. To the east it was poor but to California twenty meters worked rather well. Why has it become a local band? I heard a noise on my roof on Wednesday that sounded like a falling branch. The wind was high so I thought the tree was simply sloughing off dead limbs. When I went out for a look I saw the balun to my spare G5RV hung in a branch with the feedline lying on the roof. I have soldered that joint three times thus far and it looks like I get to practice soldering in the wind one more time. Luckily it is much warmer than the last time when there was snow on the roof. I should have used a torch that time but used my Weller soldering gun instead. I may need to drop that antenna for a more thorough refit. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. I will turn the net over to you for a few minutes so you can call areas in my skip zone. Bill, I, too, am somewhat at a hearing deficit - loud tool die shop work, but not yet at the hearing aid stage. I know folks are going to say I am crazy, flame proof suit on, when I tell you that I use a set of Frisby (model FHP-100) headphones with my K3 and they work FANTASTIC!!. Best part is, they are cheap, I mean very cheap, I'm talking $10-$15 cheap! I bought 3 pair of them and unfortunately had to go to the second pair, as my youngest puppy snuck into the shack and decided to chew on the padded ear pieces. Now, I only run CW, so that might be the reason they work for me. I usually have the AF gain some where around the 9:00 position, and RF is adjusted according to the band, but never max. The headphones have a volume adjustment inline that I use rather than moving the AF gain. They also have a mike boom attached, and I have used it on 2 meter FM, with local folks telling me that I sound very natural. For what they cost, I would recommend you give them a try and if you don't like them you are not out much. Heck, you can contact me off line, and I'll buy them from you if you don't like them. You'll be out nothing other than the time trying them. Okay, enough said on this subject. Unless I've missed it, nowwhere do the instructions indicate that the speaker is to be re-connected. If this is the case, it's a bummer. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Internal Speaker versus Internal Battery
Mike, Logic should be inserted. The instructions do include a step to Reinstall the top and bottom covers on page 8. That would logically include plugging in the speaker, and if installed, the KAT2 and KIO2 as well before screwing the top cover in place. There are times when a few bit of logic must be inserted. Yes, if you want the speaker to work, logic says that you must plug it into the same place from which it was removed. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/9/2011 10:41 PM, vicki glover wrote: Just got done wiring up the speaker on the top cover and looked at the instructions for the internal battery kit and first thing instructed is to DISCONNECT the speaker. What didn't help? A few explanatory words are usually required. A simple statement that it didn't work is never helpful and will not generate any additional assistance. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/9/2011 11:12 PM, wa9fvp wrote: It didn't help - Jack WA9FVP Willco Electronics -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/No-line-out-when-AGC-is-off-tp6566530p6566932.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] OT: morse keys , pricing
Just received my Elecraft HEXKEY this week. Using for first time on the IARU contest. It's great. Nice feel, workmanship and weight. Nice 'bang for the buck'. bill nr4c -Original Message- From: Bill W4ZV [mailto:btipp...@alum.mit.edu] Sent: Saturday, July 09, 2011 4:58 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] OT: morse keys , pricing Tony Estep wrote: and was reviewed in QST May 2010 along with the Begali Simplex, another top-of-the-line key. I'm upset with Begali because my paddle had a dissimilar metals problem with the contacts (a fundamental design flaw). Over time these acted as diodes and caused keying problems (and I certainly don't need any help in creating sending errors!) I contacted Begali numerous times about replacement contacts but never got so much as a reply to my emails. This problem has since been solved in production by using silver contacts but my Begali sits unused because I don't want to sell it as is and I have no way to fix it because of the poor customer service. Too bad they don't provide service like Elecraft! 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/OT-morse-keys-pricing-tp6561475p6566409 .html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
