Re: [Elecraft] K3s and P3s Can't Swim
I worked for many years in the mobile radio servicing industry, we occasionally saw waterlogged radios and sometimes were asked to repair them. Forget it, before the days of surface mount ICs it was hard to ensure there wasn't corrosion starting under components, now it's virtually impossible. As others have said, claim on insurance and get fresh gear. 73 Dave, G4AON __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Rob, The line cord was not in a bag, maybe that is why I can't find the fuses. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 fuse block door
A 3AG fuse is a 3AG fuse - the spec includes the diameter as well as the length of the fuse. If the fuses are fully seated in the clips as shown on page 5 of the manual the ears on the door will slip by them, but it is sometimes tight. If it turns out the fuse holder is defective, Elecraft support will get a new one out to you ASAP. Also Elecraft support will be glad to send you the missing cord and package of fuses you can keep as spares. The support e-mail address is on page 15 of your manual. [Elecraft] K3 and Utility question
When I have the K3 turned on when I start up my laptop and it happens to be in SSB mode the com port I use for the utility apparently causes the PTT to send about 5 longs T's over the air. If I am in CW no problem because I have told the rig to come up with VOX off. Is there a setting that will prevent this unattended transmission while in SSB mode? John, The com port is most likely activating either DTR or RTS during its power up testing. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 fuse block door
When I was in Israel I learned a phrase which literally translated is product as-if. A product as-if is something that looks like what it is supposed to be, but actually can't perform the function. Everyone has had the experience of buying a product as-if and then discovering that not only is it not usable, but it could not possibly be usable, given the design, materials, tolerances, etc. For example, recently I've had PL259's that won't take solder, tools that break the first time you try to use them, screws made of metal so soft that it's a struggle not to destroy the slots, etc. I don't want to pick on Radio Shack in particular, but they do carry a lot of them. Luckily they will take things back for a refund if they are no good, but it's still /very/ annoying, especially with little stuff (and then they go right back on the shelf). For various reasons that I won't go into, there are many more products as-if on the shelves here in the US these days. It's just part of the generalized decline of civilization. So maybe he bought some fuses as-if. On 9/16/2011 7:27 AM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: A 3AG fuse is a 3AG fuse - the spec includes the diameter as well as the length of the fuse. Re: [Elecraft] vpse
HI Don, You could also use LP Bridge, as this AP provides the same functionality. You can find LP Bridge via http://www.telepostinc.com/LPB.html LP Bridge is quite easy to use and virtualizes a K3 for up to three comm ports. VSPE is actually quite easy to use as well, but not as obvious during set up. I use LP Bridge to combine rig and PTT control for programs like HRD. In Navy-Marine Corps MARS, we use digital modes like MT63 for data and traffic, and HRD doesn't have any facility for combining the control and PTT port. LPB handles it just fine. I've virtualized the PTT port to COM20, and the control port to COM19. Keep the xx in COMxx to a lower number to help ensure your logging/digital software can access the port numbers. Some of them instead. 73, matt W6NIA On Fri, 16 Sep 2011 07:22:19 -0700 (PDT), you wrote: A little off subject. Can anyone help me setup VPSE emulator. Re: [Elecraft] Binary Decode Chip
Hi Lee, I'm taxing old memory cells but in the 7400 series of TTL chips the 74145 is a BCD decoder which with 4 lines in will give 0 to 9, or 10 outputs, if that is what you want. With a 74159 you can decode all four lines for 16 possible outputs. You don't have to worry about unused states if that is a chip you find. There may be a CMOS equivalent but I don't know it offhand. 73, Bob K2TK ex KN2TKR K2TKR On 9/16/2011 11:27 AM, Lee Buller wrote: I have lost an email where someone described a binary decode chip for band decoding. [Elecraft] K2 Low Power?
Hello all, I don't think my K2 is developing normal output power. Been having some complaints about not being heard well enough to copy, so I hooked it up to a dummy load and caluculated that when set to call for 15 watts it is only producting about 8.56 watts with a current draw of 2.06A with supply voltage of 13.7volts. Even if I run the supply voltage up to 15 volts it is still under 10 watts. When it is set to call for 10 watts the output is under 5 watts. I have been using the TEST mode to practice CW with a paddle (am used to a bug). Would this have damaged the rig. I checked the troubleshooting section in the manual about low power, but what is too low before I should start doing the signal tracing? I did see a Hi-Cur warning a couple of times when experimenting with some antennas, could the resistor R-50 be open? Re: [Elecraft] Heathkit Ham Products
Gary, VK4FD has some valid points about Heath's re-entry into the ham market. Heath is fondly remembered by us older hams that bought and built their kits, but also there is lingering disappointment when they quit the ham business. (Alaska has a former governor with this problem?) One thing that I think has been stated well is a successful ham equipment manufacturer needs active hams on their engineering and marketing staff. No one connects like an enthusiast can. I think the early years at Heath had a few hams on board. Heath started with selling electronic test equipment kits made up from the ample WWII and Korean War surplus that was available making their costs, low. That has changed. Their kits were often simple basic items which now they will compete with cheap offshore sources. It will remain to be seen if they have the vision and talent to get back into the ham trade. They have name recognition and that helps. I wonder if they may come out with partial pre-assembled SMT boards with mostly mechanical assembly as the K3 has? It is a different market from when they were last in it. I see the kit market belonging to the niche group of high-tech or non-conventional ham pursuits like QRP, digital, satellite, eme, mw, etc. A lot of the hams in these pursuits are pretty smart cookies and capable builders. They are not interested in building basic stuff. They are looking for kits that enable them to obtain the unobtainable. SDR's, high-power sspa's, special modes... Mostly parts sourced from high-tech surplus (if you can find it). K2 (kit)=unique! K3 unsurpassed! XG3=cleaver and so useful! Elecraft has earned its reputation. [Elecraft] RE, XG3 and KX3 Development
Having just mentioned the XG3 in another post, I have to affirm how neat the XG3 is. It nearly fulfills my needs for a signal generator (adding modulation would complete that). I have used it for troubleshooting. For calibrating. For testing MDS on my receivers. For measuring filter curves. Now I am using it with a circular polarized antenna to calibrate my two orthogonal eme antennas (Vpol and Hpol) for setting up my adaptive polarity-diversity receiver. I point my eme array at the CP antenna and feed it with -73 dBm on 144.200 MHz from the XG3. They are separated about 130-feet and I get 20-dB SNR signal in USB on the K3/LP-Pan/Spectravue. I adjust the gain of the two signals (one horz pol and other vert pol) to be equal in amplitude and remove any phase difference in the two signals to calibrate the system. Then the ratio of signal levels Hpol to Vpol provide a measurement of polarity angle (to one degree) by the use of the Linrad SDR sw. Not only that but the output of Linrad is maximized to match the polarization (thus the adaptive title). ergo automatic polarization. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-100w, 1296-60w, 3400-? Re: [Elecraft] K2 Low Power?
Mike, If resistor R50 is open, in most cases you will have very little (less than 1 watt) output. My best guess is that one of the PA transistors opened up when you encountered a very high SWR. When experimenting with antennas, it is best to keep the power down to one or two watts. When practicing CW, either turn the power all the way down or put it into CW Test (Hold the MODE button). Caution, CW Test is turned off if you power cycle the K2. You can do Transmit Signal Tracing at any power level, but the Expected values in the manual will not be what is listed unless the power is set to 5 watts AND the K2 is not capable of producing 5 watts. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/16/2011 4:49 PM, vicki glover wrote: Hello all, I don't think my K2 is developing normal output power. Hello Jim, Went through the setup like you instructed. No luck. my pc is a 64 bit and I do have the 64 bit version of Vpse. Will play around with it a see what I come up with. [Elecraft] PLL upgrade
So quite a while back, I posted on this reflector about a problem I was having with my K2 changing apparent frequency (not displayed) drastically based on squeezing the case. It seemed as if the BFO was moving but I eventually got it to settle down and I was just more careful. Today I decided I would dig more into the situation because I was tired of the thing swinging all over every time I moved the radio, which is fairly often as I do go portable somewhat often. I hooked up the Freq counter to TP2 (BFO) and squeezed here and there and got the radio to behave as before but I did not notice the frequency shifting at all. The issue was not in the BFO as first thought. I looked some more and hooked up to TP1 (VFO) and saw right away what was happening. The VFO would shift by up to 10k every time I squeezed the case and eventually settle back where it was previously. With the lid off, I looked around and poked and prodded until I noticed that touching the PLL upgrade board caused the mystery behavior. I did not see anything odd on the board but I wiggled it a bit and moved it further away from the nearby IC and it finally stayed stable. I re-assembled the radio and could not get the mystery behavior to return. I have squashed the beast! Anyway, I wonder if any others have had this problem. Hopefully this will help as I have searched but found no other references to this issue. 73, W0EA -- TJ Campie __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] PLL upgrade
Tom, It is good that you have localized the problem area. That behavior is typical of a marginal solder connection. Moving things may have fixed it, but it is certain to return. I would suggest you re-flow the soldering on the Thermistor board (you can access it by removing the Control Board and the Front Panel), and the connections on the bottom of the RF board. Use a hot (750 degF) soldering iron and add a bit of solder (actually you will be adding flux). 73, Don W3FPR On 9/16/2011 10:24 PM, TJ Campie wrote: So quite a while back, I posted on this reflector about a problem I was having with my K2 changing apparent frequency (not displayed) drastically based on squeezing the case.
