[Elecraft] Sell or trade
Hi, all concerned: The move to Jacksonville, Florida is approaching. I'm in the cargo bay, balancing the load and jettisoning excess parts of it. Excess: 1. K3, sn14XX, 100W, filters, AT, 2nd rx, KDVR, late factory mods/checkout, current factory price about $3500. 2. Both units perform well, ie, no issues, and will be packed for the rigors of shipping at your cost and risk. The transformer will be removed from the amplifier power supply. The $ figures listed are negotiable, naturally. I'm interested in selling or trading for one KPA500 kit, one P3 kit, and one KRC2. [Elecraft] K2 KIO2 needed
When I got my K2 for use in the field, I never thought I would need or want the KIO2 module. But I am thinking otherwise. There may be one sitting out there unused, perhaps from a double-up when the KPA100 was added to a K2/10. Or maybe an unbuilt kit. If you have such and wish to sell or trade, please contact me. [Elecraft] Best way to use NB and NR?
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some hints as to the best way to use the NB and the NR? [Elecraft] K3 software suggestion
Tuning the K3 on 75m sideband this morning and trying to get the vfo precisely on a frequency such as 3.823.00 for example, it can take some time when your hands are none too steady. Since the SPOT button displays N/A in sideband mode, I thought it could be used instead to automatically move the vfo to the nearest 1khz frequency when pressed in sideband mode. Re: [Elecraft] Questions about diversity mode
Do you have a factory built K3? If so, the subRX AUX ANT is connected to the BNC jack, not to the ANT port that the MAIN is using. To do what I believe you want to do, you will have to installed the TMP cable that came with your K3 between the Sub AUX RX input and the KAT3. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/29/2011 12:18 PM, tomb18 wrote: Hi I have two antennas, one a dipole for 40m and a vertical for 20-10m. Re: [Elecraft] K3 software suggestion
Dirk, I believe what you want is already present (but not using the SPOT button). Read the VFO portion of the manual page 47, and set VFO CRS for each mode as you desire. (see menu listing on page 62). For SSB use, I set mine for 0.5 kHz steps, and I also set VFO OFS to ON so I can use the RIT control for coarse tuning instead of pushing the COARSE button. That allows me to use the VFO A knob for fine tuning. I also turn rounding on for VFO CRS Note that I seldom if ever find a need for RIT or XIT in SSB mode, YMMV. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/29/2011 1:27 PM, Dirk Jorens wrote: Tuning the K3 on 75m sideband this morning and trying to get the vfo precisely on a frequency such as 3.823.00 for example, it can take some time when your hands are none too steady. Bob I fitted them into my K1 and found that they caused shorting somewhere - I never established quite where as I was too eager to remove them when they got very hot. I have compared the size of the cells with alkaline by eye and can see no difference in diameter but the springs in the battery box seemed more compressed with the Energizers and I think that one spring was touching the aluminium bracket. I have covered the bracket with clear tape now but haven't put the Energizers back in yet. Since Wayne uses them, I shall do just that and try again. Started construction about 10:00 a.m. today and completed things about 2:30 for a total build time of roughly 4.5 hours. Other things are getting in the way right now so won't be able to shuffle the shack around and hook it up until later this evening or sometime tomorrow, but it powered up just fine and no smoke was let out of any components so they all still have their full allocation of MOJO smoke. I did find a couple screws missing, but my well stocked supply came up with them in short order so nothing to worry about. It will be on the DEMO table at the Wichita hamfest this weekend. Re: [Elecraft] Energizer L91 batteries for the K1-4
Stephen, I repaired one K1 that had a similar problem. If one inserts the battery holder with the battery bodies parallel with the front panel, yes. the spring leads on the battery pack will be shorted by the aluminum bracket. Put the battery pack in the way it is shown on page 7 of the KBT1 manual - the length of the batteries are parallel with the side panel. That same thing can happen with any type battery. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/29/2011 2:20 PM, Stephen Prior wrote: Bob I fitted them into my K1 and found that they caused shorting somewhere - I never established quite where as I was too eager to remove them when they got very hot. Re: [Elecraft] Rx antenna on K3
Dick, Have you tried the regular antenna on the RX antenna jack? I am trying to eliminate the possibility that your beverage antenna has significantly lower gain than your transmit antenna (beverages do have lower gain). We need to know whether it is a K3 problem or an antenna problem. The possible paths for the various antenna ports are shown in the diagrams in the K3 manual. The configuration applicable to your situation depends on your installed options and the configuration menu settings. We cannot give a good answer unless we know your K3 configuration. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/29/2011 7:55 PM, Dick Allardyce (N4RA) wrote: I've had my K3 since June and everything seems to be working OK. The first few cw characters, swr looks fine, but if I pause a bit and hit the key again, swr jumps above 5:1 and the amp shuts down with a refl hi fault. If I run the K3 barefoot at 100w, the swr is steady at 1.3:1 no matter what I do. Anybody know what is going on? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 REFL HI fault
Bob, I suspect a fault in your antenna system that is OK at 100 watts, but does something funny (like perhaps arc over) when 500 (or 250) watts is applied. Does the same thing happen into a dummy load? If so, then it is a KPA500 problem, but if OK on a dummy load, take a good look at your antenna system. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/29/2011 8:43 PM, Robert Redmon wrote: I put my KPA500 on 80 meters for the first time this morning, and it faults after several characters. [Elecraft] KPA500 REFL HI fault
Hi Bob, I experienced the same with my former ICPW1. The problem was from loose connection / poor contact of the coaxial connectors. Check also the ground connectors as well. Please check with a good quality dummy load first as suggested by Don W3FPF. Re: [Elecraft] Mac logging programs?
In my opinion MacLoggerDx is not the best if you are a DX'er. Especially if you are a K3 user. RUMLog is far better for sorting cluster spots and for keeping track of countries worked and confirmed on LoTW or paper. Also, for doing one-click uploads and downloads to LoTW. RUMLog also has an excellent K3 panel that checks many functions of the radio and lets you directly access the M1-M8 memories and set up a bunch of macros. It also lets you access the K3 keyer for CW or the direct RTTY functions of the K3. I have not found a better program for the Mac than RUMLog for color coding incoming spots (on several clusters) and quickly letting you figure out your status for a DXCC entity. For casual operating MacLoggerDX is great but for the DX'er with a K3 RUMLog is better. IMHO. BTW, I have used both for 5+ years. Re: [Elecraft] Mac logging programs?
Hi Cary, The premiere general purpose logging program for the Mac is MacLoggerDX from DogPark Software. It incorporates many features including rig control, DX clusters and spotting, automatic beam steering, 2D or 3D map, and much more. It is actively supported with frequent updates by Don Agros and costs $95 for a single use license. I have been using it for five years and am very happy with it. RUMlog is a free program for the Mac that should be considered. It has become quite popular and has incorporated more features over time. It's strengths include enhanced tracking and management of qso's for various award pursuits. RUMped is a DX-pedition and contesting logger specifically tailored to those activities. It is also free. jLog is another free program for the Mac. It's a pretty basic, simplified logger without a lot of bells and whistles. These are the programs that I'm aware of but I'm sure there are some others out there. My descriptions above are brief and may not fully capture the value of each program. I'm a MacLoggerDX user so I know more about it. You should check all their web pages and read the reviews on eHam.net to decide which best meets your needs. Re: [Elecraft] Mac logging programs?
I agree that RUMlog is by far the better program, especially for the DXer. It is well written, intuitive, and loaded with useful features. Above all, the program is actively supported by the author and in the time I've used it, have not seen any bugs. I tried MacLoggerDx and simply couldn't get the same level of usefulness from it. It's a free program, but for the quality of work and effort that has been put into it, a contribution to the author is in order, in my opinion. Charlie, K4ZRJ Sent from my MacBook Pro. Re: [Elecraft] Best way to use NB and NR?
The K3 noise blanker, and in fact any noise blanker works by producing holes in the receive path. That is what blanking means - if an impulse is detected, it shuts off the receive path for a specified period of time. That will not take away from the reception of faint signals, but if combined with gaps in the received signals because of impulse events occurring at the receiving station, it may make the copy of faint signals difficult because of the blanks in the received data stream. In my opinion, it should only be used when necessary, not all the time. If you have constant static pulses or automotive ignition noise or distant lightning surge problems at your QTH, then it may be beneficial to run the NB at all times, but if you do not need it, keep it off. Remember that the NB responds to impulse noise - it will not be effective in reducing slow rise time noise like atmospheric noise or power-line induced noise. NB needs a fast rise time to be effective. NR is a different animal altogether. It will reduce or eliminate things like atmospheric noise or power line noise - it works on correlation principles. That means is it is normally quiet while it looks for what might be a valid signal. When it finds something that appears to be a valid signal, it builds a filter around it and sends that result to the K3 audio. What it looks for is highly dependent on the parameters set for the K3 NR algorithm as well as your local noise. There are several settings provided for in the menu. Do a little experimenting with your chosen mode and local noise situation until you discover what works best for you. The settings for CW will likely not be good for SSB. Try the settings to find which works for your particular situation. This is not a case of one size fits all, customize it to your particular noise source. With NR on, the desired signal should be enhanced, but really weak signals may be at or near the noise level, and may not appear as a valid signal, giving the appearance that weak signals may be covered up and not detected. I suggest (after experimenting) that you normally run with NR turned off, but turn it on if the situation warrants it. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/29/2011 12:15 PM, tomb18 wrote: Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some hints as to the best way to use the NB and the NR? [Elecraft] Aluminum K2 Case
About 4-5 yrs ago, both Lowes and Home Depot carried an aluminum tool case' that used pluck-out foam to customize a portable tool case. Many of us used these cases for our K2s and our K1s to keep them safe during transit to and from operating locations. Having just re-acquired a K2, I am now in need of one of these aluminum equipment cases. Guess what? Neither Lowes or H-D carries these aluminum took kits! Price range was around $20-$25 for the case. Does anyone know where we can procure said cases? I really need one for my new K2. Tony, Lance, There are only some 3D2R operators, which have been on ST0R, but the organization is totally different as well as the lineup. N6PSE is not a leader, and if there are any K3 and KPA500, they have been brought by members as personal equipment. Otherwise the transceivers there are IC7000, hi. And this is T32C DX expedition, which container (full with Yaesu gear) is stuck somewhere in the middle of Pacific. Anyway, they must start today with FT450s, hi. GL working both expeditions! 73 Val LZ1VB The 3D2R expedition has been on for the past couple of days with basically the same lineup who put ST0R on the air. As you'll recall, their gear includes several Elecraft K3s and KPA500s. For certain periods, they've had good signals here in the midwest, and I know they are strong most of the day out west. I worked team leader Paul, N6PSE, and he recognized my call from this reflector and called me by name, which put a smile on my face. If you want to hear the audio and keying of a K3 coming to you live from the far reaches of the Pacific, tune 'em in. Re: [Elecraft] Best way to use NB and NR?
As a brand new K3 user, I find some of the NR DSP settings quite perplexing. In working some nets, e.g. MARS, I've found some stations' audio almost totally suppressed, while others enhanced. Unfortunately, this process is not consistent, but changes as the noise picture changes. Trial and error methodology rules the day here. On a lighter note, an algorithm that consistently suppresses an individual station could come in handy. Certainly would consider a 2M XVTR module to run on our local repeater! I would be interested if there's a White Paper somewhere on the Elecraft web site, (or elsewhere), with an in-depth explanation of what the various settings do. 73, Dan WA6PZK On 9/29/11 8:51 PM, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: The K3 noise blanker, and in fact any noise blanker works by producing holes in the receive path. Re: [Elecraft] Best way to use NB and NR?
As usual, Don's explanation is dead on. There's one more point to make about the noise blanker. Because it switches the receive path off and on to product those holes were the noise pulse would otherwise come through, it is a mixer. That is, any signals in the signal path that are being switched on and off produce some and difference frequencies across the spectrum. To the listener the result may be an increase in the general background noise heard or strange artifacts such as key clicks on CW signals that are, in fact, generated within the receiver by the noise blanker and not coming from the transmitting station at all. Similar distortions may be apparent on SSB and other signals. Normally these by-products of the noise blanker will be far less of a problem than the noise, but they demonstrate how important it is to turn the noise blanker OFF when it's not actually needed. 73, Ron AC7AC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
