Re: [Elecraft] CocoaModem
"soundcard to the computer" ... sometimes, I wonder where I left my brain ... yes, of course, what I meant to say was "soundcard to the rig". Glad to hear you are now receiving. With regards to now getting output, the only thing I can think of checking is the L/R sideband selector in the bottom (output) section of the PSK config screen (assuming you've got the output device set correctly). This will again depend on how you've got the soundcard-to-rig cable on the transmit side wired. Re: [Elecraft] APF question
Hello Mike, The APF, because of the high "Q" will naturally produce ringing with a strong signal. Just back down the RF Gain control until you can clearly hear the keying elements. However, I'd suggest that if the signal is that strong to begin with, you probably don't need to use the APF function. It is particularly effective though on very weak signals that are near the noise floor. 73, Dale WA8SRA On 11/11/2011 1:16 PM, Mike Weir wrote: > When using the APF function on my K3 I am getting a real tinny sound to the > point were it is difficult to understand the code. Re: [Elecraft] Accessory Build order
Fred, Those options can be installed in any order. Look at your operating situation to decide which to install first. For instance, if you are currently using a manual antenna tuner and would like to automate the tuning, add the KAT2 first. If you are interested more in SSB and digital modes, then install the KSB2 first. If you are plagued with impulse noise (like automotive ignition noise), then the KNB2 would be a better first addition, but if you want to operate with rig control software applications, then the KIO2 will be on the list of "soon to be added" options. Bottom line is that it all depends on what capabilitiies you want for your K2 right now and for the future. Gee, 2 years of excitement with the basic K2, and you have already purchased the options - that does not sound like the typical K2 builder who wants everything all at once. I congratulate you on your patience and your enjoyment with the basic K2. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/11/2011 7:51 PM, KC9QQ wrote: > I hope this is a simple question. > > I built my K2 nearly two years ago and it has been working flawlessly. > After I completed the construction and alignment of the base unit I had > planned to build and install the KSB2, KDSP2, KNB2, KIO2, and KAT2 > (purchased with the original K2). [Elecraft] Accessory Build order
I hope this is a simple question. I built my K2 nearly two years ago and it has been working flawlessly. After I completed the construction and alignment of the base unit I had planned to build and install the KSB2, KDSP2, KNB2, KIO2, and KAT2 (purchased with the original K2). I was so pleased with the performance of the basic radio for QRP CW operation that I never got around to building and installing the other kits. Is there a preferred order I should follow for building and installing the above kits? If so, all advice and opinions are welcomed. This should make a nice project for one of our Indiana snow storms this winter. [Elecraft] K3 Speaker Function
I am using a set of small powered speakers with the proper stereo plug into the KIO3 Stereo SPKRS jack. The CONFIG Menu is set for SPKRS to 2 and SPKR+PH to YES. I hear audio out of the speakers (stereo) and the phones at the same time. The AFX function is active and working. If I change the SPKR+PH to NO, the speaker audio mutes. The phones are OK. If I unplug the phones, should not the external speakers come on again? I swear that was the case earlier, but it is not happening now. I can turn the external speakers volume own and accomplish what I want. Is something amiss? Or was I having a senior moment earlier? If I disconnect the external speakers, set SPKRS to 1 and SPKR+PH to NO, there is no speaker function (phones OK) until I set SPKR+PH to YES. What am I doing wrong? Or is it working normal? [Elecraft] SDR-IF and I/Q questions
Thank you, John, for posting this. (see below) I was going to comment that articles I have read say the software adjusts the phase of the I/Q signals in the soundcard to cancel images. You have said it well. WinRad & HDSDR, perhaps others, are doing it well. It seems to be a weak spot with PSDR-IF related software. Thaks for sharing the Infrasonic related info. Dick, n0ce _ The Infrasonic Quartet card (stereo, 192 kHz) comes with a small applet, called "FREEMIXER Panel," that works outside of the WIN sound management system. This helper app allows one to independently play with the levels (not the phase) of the incoming I/Q stream. I imagine other fast cards come the same way. Several of the SDR programs also have an "image killer" available. I am guessing when I say that this "image killer" works by adjusting the phase (time delay)...the ones I have used are offset-specific WRT the particular image that is removed. On stronger signals it sounds tinny because its 30 Hz filter is on the verge of ringing. If you can hear a CW signal Q5, you don't need or want APF. It's intended for the 339 and 449 signals buried in noise. It can bring these signals to Q5 but must be peaked carefully because the BW is so narrow. 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/APF-question-tp6986325p6986495.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] SDR-IF and I/Q questions
Don, (responding to your paragraph below) Here is where I have been at for awhile. I have tested the output on the I/Q leads with a O-scope and they are certainly close. Rocky verifies that, and shows them within a dB. WinRad shows 90 degree phase, (and no mirror images). Neither my soundcard, nor my SoftRock have adjustments for balancing the I/Q leads further. It would be nice if the Audio Mixer Software did this. I wonder if some do? So having a soundcard that provides for balance may be the focal point for the solution to this problem. (Provided that ground loops do not exist.) Thanks again, Dick, n0ce Dick,The cause of mirror images is normally associated with the two audio signals not being of equal amplitude and/or not 90 degrees out of phase when they enter the "number crunching" part of the software. Yes, "ground loops" can cause that, but check your cables for integrity and be certain the volume controls for the "left" and "right" channels are producing the same amplitude input. Some experimentation with the level controls may be necessary. 73, Don W3FPR -- Richard Fjeld rpfj...@embarqmail.com I'd rather be learning. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Click or Pop Sound Using Diversity Receive
Hi Toby, You just confirmed the diagnosis by identifying the problem as only happening while running high power. You are hearing the COR (carrier operated relay) in the K3. See page 37 in the manual. Here is an excerpt. /The sub receiver’s AUX antenna must be well-isolated from the transmit antenna to avoid activating the sub’s carrier-operated relay./ If you can't physically move your receive antenna you should consider an RF Limiter like the ICE 196 or use a relay to remove your receive antenna while transmitting. 73, Mike K2MK Tobyp wrote: > > Just found out the clicking occurs when the KPA 500 is in line. Re: [Elecraft] SDR-IF and I/Q questions
John, do any of the SDR programs you mention allow you to monitor the two audio outputs AFTER the inserted phase shift? Here's why I ask, although it is essentially unrelated to a normal SDR application ... I'm convinced that we should be able to use the diversity feature of a K3 with both receivers to spacially discriminate against an unwanted signal. We should be able to do it in the horizontal plane by feeding two vertical antennas into the K3, one into each receiver. We might be able to partially do it in the vertical plane by, for example, feeding two stacked antennas on the same tower into the K3 one into each receiver. All we need is a variable phase shift in the audio since phase is preserved in the conversion from RF to audio. I've searched for normal audio processing software to accomplish this (volume equalization, phase shift, inversion, sum), but so far haven't found anything other than some extremely expensive professional audio stuff for large auditoriums. I've always thought that something like this could be built into the K3 internal software, maybe using the VFO B knob to adjust the phase. The K3 phase lock in diversity mode is not determinant (the actual phase is essentially random at any frequency) so the null would have to be readjusted at each frequency, but I still think it would be a neat capability. At one point (more than a year ago) Elecraft sounded mildly intrigued by the idea when I first suggested it, but I don't think they've spent any time on it. 73, Dave AB7E On 11/11/2011 6:54 AM, John Ragle wrote: > Several of the SDR programs also have an "image > killer" available. [Elecraft] TR: K2 disassemble/ maint. question
Hi Jacob, Last week, I replaced a defective headphone jack on my K2 (the speaker didn't work anymore). You need only to remove the top cover, then the two screws that hold the control board to the front panel, then the four screws that hold the Front Panel to the chassis. You can then unplug the Front Panel assembly and you will have a good access to the headphone jack. The most serious part of the job is to desolder the defective jack. If you want to refer to some Elecraft documentation, I suggest the KSB2 manual on page 16 "Front Panel Components" (my version is Revison E, July 20, 2004). It explains exactly what I'm telling you. Good luck, de Raymond, F4FNT K2/100 5,636, k3/100 0615. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K2-100 For Sale
K2-100 #4991 for sale; well equipped with KAT2 (internal tuner), KSB2, KDSP2, KIO2, KNB2, FDIMP, and MH-2 hand microphone and Anderson PowerPole cable. It has Don's (W3FPR) constant-level audio output module installed, as well as the K6XX CW tuning indicator (blinks the far left LED on S-meter when within 20 hertz of a CW signal). Assembled by a very experienced kit builder (NJ3V) who's a Naval Academy graduate (engineer) and high school physics teacher; rig has less than two hours on the finals; non-smoking environment and never outside. It performs beautifully; all documentation (and it's extensive!). Reason for selling? I use it very little since acquiring a K3-100 (#3448) about two years ago. Kit price today for a K2-100 with these options is about $1900. Asking $950 and I will ship CONUS only. Re: [Elecraft] SDR-IF and I/Q questions
The Infrasonic Quartet card (stereo, 192 kHz) comes with a small applet, called "FREEMIXER Panel," that works outside of the WIN sound management system. Re: [Elecraft] K2 disassemble/ maint. question
Jacob, Complete disassembly is not necessary - here are the steps: Remove the top cover (6 screws) and the front bottom cover (6 screws), and the 4 screws holding the front panel on the exterior. There are two screws inside holding the Control Panel and Front panel together. Peer between those two boards to see where the standoffs are located and you can quickly locate the screws. The one on the left can be complicated a bit if the KAF2 or KDSP2 are installed - that option must be removed first. If it is the KAF2, just remove the screw holding it in place, but if the KDSP2 is installed, remove the top DSPx board first by pulling it to the rear, then you can get at the mounting screw. Remove the Control Board first - use a hex wrench as indicated in the manual as an aid to release the connectors. After that, just pull the front panel to the front. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/11/2011 8:28 AM, jacob chambers wrote: > Group; > > I have a new headphone jack to put into my rig. Re: [Elecraft] Click or Pop Sound Using Diversity Receive
Just found out the clicking occurs when the KPA 500 is in line. I do not hear the clicking when unkeying using the rig barefoot, but only occurs when the amp is turned on and active. I am using the special K3 to KPA 500 cabling. This does not occur when not in Diversity mode, but does occur when in diversity mode on cw. Re: [Elecraft] SDR-IF and I/Q questions
Dick, The cause of mirror images is normally associated with the two audio signals not being of equal amplitude and/or not 90 degrees out of phase when they enter the "number crunching" part of the software. Yes, "ground loops" can cause that, but check your cables for integrity and be certain the volume controls for the "left" and "right" channels are producing the same amplitude input. Some experimentation with the level controls may be necessary. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/11/2011 3:45 AM, Richard Fjeld wrote: > Greetings to Don Wilhelm and others, > > I'm a couple Digests behind and I am responding to Vol 91, Issue 13. This is true but I'd suggest that if the s9+25dB shoulder is within 350hz, there's going to be plenty of that adjacent signal spilling over into your dsp passband that's going to pump your dsp AGC. So at best you will get slight improvement with the narrower filter but I wonder if it would ever make a difference in copy ability. A narrow filter just isn't buying you that much in ssb. [Elecraft] SDR-IF and I/Q questions
Greetings to Don Wilhelm and others, I'm a couple Digests behind and I am responding to Vol 91, Issue 13. I have had responses similar to the following: . I believe you are mixing two things (given the last paragraph of your post). The SDR software application has no connection with the serial or USB connection to the transceiver - the I/Q outputs are fed to the soundcard and those alone can provide a panadapter type display with no serial connection at all. . I knew I should have explained why I asked that. If ground loops are involved in the mirrored image problem, as some have suggested, the RS232 arrangement could be a factor (depending upon how they are wired of course). In the meantime, I have installed NaP3 and it seems to have very good control between radio and software. It is trimmed down from about 30 Mb (PSDR-IF) to less than 4 Mb (NaP3). I read it is taken from a newer version of PowerSDR which is good. I still have numerous mirrored images with it which I will have to get to the bottom of. That is why I asked the questions, to see if I can determine a focal point. By the way, when I installed both PSDR-IF and NaP3, I got a pop-up error message 2908 that I can't get away from unless I do a Ctl-Alt-Del. If you get this, I found a work-around solution. So far, it looks like NaP3 is what I have been waiting for. I haven't responded to all the replies I have received, but I am considering all of them and I thank you. I would still like to have some input (it can be off line if you like) of whether or not you have been successful at running a 'computerized pan-adapter' so that I can weed out the common denominator of this mirrored image problem. I'd like to know YES, or NO, and cpu type and speed, OS, soundcard, if USB to serial adapter or straight serial cable, and the SDR program .
