[Elecraft] K3 # 1645
On the K3 sn 1645 which I listed for sale previously: I had a very good friend go all thru it inventory options and upgrades and mods. He has listed EVERY option and upgrade and mod (except all the filters) with an explicit YES / NO for each. The PDF is setup to print landscape. The unit will be here about noon today and then I will have pictures for anyone who needs them. The unit came from a home where the owner was a light smoker. Any questions, email me, I do not give out my phone #. If it is really important, send your phone # and I can call you. An Icom SM-20 Microphone has been wired for use with this K3. I will accept PayPal if you pay the fees. Unit will ship via your choice of methods at your cost from Zip 13850 or can be picked up here. A couple of weeks ago on an 80m EU dx net that I regularly participate in I recorded about 10 seconds of audio from a ZL who the net was working just to give him an idea of how well his nice clean signal was being received here in the UK. He was happy with the playback and a number of UK participants in the net said without being asked that they could hardly distinguish between the recording and the real thing. I recommend the Elecraft site for manual for the BL1 or BL2 BALUNs they sell. Or just buy one of them. The BL2 is switchable from 1:1 to 4:1 and is small, and very well designed. Re: [Elecraft] . K3 dvr playback distortion
Geoff and all, Currently, there is no way to bypass the equalization for the DVR. When you record someone's off-the-air signal, it passes through your RX EQ settings, and then when you play it back, it goes through your TX EQ settings - so the audio gets hit with the double whammy of both RX EQ and TX EQ in a situation where you do not want any equalization at all. If your EQ settings are all flat, then you can obtain and playback something that represents what you heard, but if you have either the RX or TX EQ settings adjusted for your ears, speaker, headphones, microphone, etc. Then the individual whom you recorded will not be able to hear an honest assessment of how he sounded when you play it back over the air. So yes, any fix will not be applied to the DVR, rather what is needed is the ability to turn off EQ when recording or transmitting previously recorded audio. One would normally want to have the audio pass through TX EQ if it was recorded locally, but playback of recordings made off the air is different and needs EQ turned off. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/23/2012 7:55 AM, Geoffrey Downs wrote: A couple of weeks ago on an 80m EU dx net that I regularly participate in I recorded about 10 seconds of audio from a ZL who the net was working just to give him an idea of how well his nice clean signal was being received here in the UK. I'll be doing that on Wednesday, Feb. 29 starting at 7:30 PM at my house. Please let me know if you plan to come by so I can have enough beer on hand! The KX3 is a hand-holdable, trail-friendly, desktop-compatible, QRP radio with many big-rig features. It includes space for 8 internal AA cells, an auto antenna tuner, a multiple-bandwidth roofing filter, an NiMH trickle charger and a 2M transverter. It runs = 5W on internal batteries or 12W with an external 13.8V supply. It sports the same LCD display as the K3 (and most of the represented features) but the front panel is 40% smaller and it's only 1.5 thick. I used it last weekend to drive an external amp to about 200W and made 400 Qs in the ARRL DX CW. It can send and decode CW, RTTY and PSK without a computer. It also works on SSB, of course, and will eventually do AM and FM. It's currently in field test, so not all features have been implemented and its performance numbers are not yet committed. But it's pretty darn good for a modestly-priced radio that is equally at home on the trail, in the car and at home. 73, /Rick N6XI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] . K3 dvr playback distortion
Of course you're right Don. More than three years ago I was amongst the first to install a KDVR3 and Lyle too explained the signal paths clearly at the time. I'm simply reporting my experience to try to put things into perspective: when I record a station over the air and play it back over the air, it usually provokes comments from listeners about how well the DVR reproduces the original. This is despite my RX and TX EQ settings (the former minimal, the latter not). Naturally it isn't *exactly* the same as the original but somehow listeners seem to think it gets very near. Certainly no-one has ever reported to me distortion that was not on the original. I know of no other rig on the market that does it better - in fact most cannot do it all. 73 to all, Geoff G3UCK -Original Message- From: Don Wilhelm Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2012 2:52 PM Geoff and all, Currently, there is no way to bypass the equalization for the DVR. [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 update FT
I posted this on the Yahoo reflector for the KX3. Will share here as well. I do not generally use Software to run my Elecraft radios other than the macros. I work on PCs/software for a living, so I love the options available with all the Elecraft radios. Like Greg, I have mine sitting just above the pullout keyboard/Mouse tray in front of the K3. I have a easy to reach antenna switch. I have listened to audio coming from both units without any signal conditioning, filters, NB, NR, etc. Hard to tell the two apart on the PC stereo speakers. That is very sweet. Now in the living room where I have another feed line to the station antenna switches, I sit with the KX3 on my sofa arm chair. I have the key plugged in. I also have a ZN QRP paddle plugged in, as it is my favorite. However the Elecraft plug is the easiest since I don’t have to drag around the cables. My remoted tuner doesn’t like to tune as it takes a minimum of 10 watts to initiate. So I pretty much have to tune using the K3 and then switch an antenna over. I will be changing that set up so I can tune the shortened 160 – 10 dipole or 350’ loop without the remote tuner. I have been using Lithium AA sized throw-aways for now. I have tried the rechargeables, but the life is rather short. Wayne is adjusting this parameter to get more life out. The clock/Charger is in progress and I am anxiously waiting to get that installed. I like the portability, brings a whole new life to this hobby. Patience… I demonstrated a tremendous amount of that as a tester for the K2. When it first came out, it was CW only! It took a while for the tuner, SSB, DSP, etc., all to be designed and released. As I recall I tested most of those as well. The KX1 came with only the basic unit. I tested on that one as well. I know you will be happy once released, as the fit and finish will be what you expect. The hardware will be excellent. The tuner is incredible… I don’t know how Wayne and company do it (I have loaded a bunch of stuff without issue other than 160, of course efficiency stinks for some of the stuff I have tried). My favorite will be the ATX Walkabout, Wayne uses the MFJ version, and using the banana plug to BNC connector that I used on the KX1. We are looking forward to the next firmware release to get rid of some kinks. Will keep you posted…. Back to work! ☺ 73, Bill K9YEQ KX3 Field Test #12 From: k...@yahoogroups.com [mailto:k...@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of TJ Campie Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2012 11:55 AM To: Greg Cc: k...@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [KX3] Patience in not a virtue Oh duh, missread the original post. I would actually expect them to be very similar since the DSP backend (while not identical) should be very similar. The SDR elements of the two are probably very close to the same. Wayne has shown a talent over the years of applying software object encapsulation and reuse concepts in hardware design. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 update FT
Superhet versus direct-to-baseband: In-band IMD is one issue. Perhaps an even more important one is the non-linear group delay caused by the crystal filters. Unlike other SDRs, the KX3 does have a roofing filter at baseband but I expect it should have flatter group delay than a crystal filter. For CW it wouldn't make any difference but I would expect SSB and AM to sound better on the KX3. (Spoken in ignorance since I don't have one.) [Elecraft] Another great Elecraft story!
I purchased and built my K3 sn #6226 a couple of weeks ago. Since that time I have added, one at a time, two more roofing filters in addition to the 2.7khz and one more that I got with the kit. Adding those two new filters a week or so apart apparently uncovered an issue with the latest version of the K3 utility program. When I moved the 2.7khz filter, each time the software wouldn't let me select SSB TX for the filter in its new slot. The radio button for apply, never activated. I had to go to the K3 and run config and change the SSB TX to the correct filter. I wrote an email to Elecraft K3 support to describe what I thought was either a software issue or a brain dump on my part. Gary forwarded my issue to Dick who I believe wrote the software for the K3 utility. After a number of emails back and forth, Dick asked me to forward my config file to him. I did so this morning and just got an email from him that he had uncovered the problem and fixed that particular line of code. He sent a new version of the K3 utility. Do you suppose that this would have happened in a few days with any if the IKY rigs? Doubtful. Probably not with our other American companies either but with Elecraft, a few emails, and the issue was resolved in roughly 24 hours. Kudos again to a great service company, never mind their superb gear! [Elecraft] K1 Kit
My summer project will likely be the K1 -- yet another fine Elecraft product to add to my QRP collection. I hope to have a full 100 watts in QRP power someday. Question: I am not sure about the noise blanker option on the K1. I never use the NB on any other rig except for the Icom 706 in my truck and there it does a good job. I will not be using the K1 in the truck (or any vehicle) and I do not have a lot of spiky noise around here. [Elecraft] K2 audio issue on CW T/R transition
My K2 has recently begun making a slight bit of a chirp-noise in my headphones on the T/R transition when I do CW. Not a chirp in the classic CW sense of the word, when the other guy hears it, but a little bit of a tone in my own headphones. My K2 is a 10-watt rev A unit, firmware revision 2.04P 1.09 with KSB2, K160RX, KAT2, and KNB2 options. The only thing I've done to the rig recently is to replace the AF and RF gain pots and I didn't notice this chirp phenomenon until sometime after I replaced the pots. This K2 does not have the alternate AF mod installed. I've noticed this phenomemon in 80m CW, and I key with a manual key. I've heard it with crystal filter settings of 700 and 400Hz. Re: [Elecraft] K2 audio issue on CW T/R transition
Eric, I really cannot associate any change in sidetone pitch (chirp) with the change of RF and AF gain pots, but I would strongly recommend that you add the sidetone pitch (10k series resistor and 82 mHy shielded inductor) changes to your Rev A K2 to give a better sidetone pitch. In fact, I would recommend all the K2 A to B mods including a crystal change if your K2 SN is less than 2560. The Alternate AF Gain Wiring Mod will not alter the chirp behavior, but it will preserve your AF Gain control for the future. The mod removes the DC current flow through the AF Gain control and will prolong its life. Actually, I would recommend that you install all the A to B mods (including the optional ones) on your K2. While not mandatory, you will notice a difference in your K2 performance - it is well worth the effort - include the Thermistor upgrade and the K2 Keying Waveshape Mod to make things complete. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/23/2012 9:35 PM, William Eric McFadden wrote: My K2 has recently begun making a slight bit of a chirp-noise in my headphones on the T/R transition when I do CW. My K2 is a 10-watt rev A unit, firmware revision 2.04P 1.09 with KSB2, K160RX, KAT2, and KNB2 options. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Kit
Wayne, Thanks. I was sort of thinking that but I learned to appreciate how much power you guys seem to pack into the smallest little features so I didn't know if maybe the KNB1 also might have provided some other useful function besides a noise blanker. 73, phil, K7PEH On Feb 23, 2012, at 6:28 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: Hi Phil, If you have a lack of noise at the intended operating location, there's no reason to get the KNB1. 73, Wayne N6KR On Feb 23, 2012, at 6:21 PM, Phil Hystad wrote: My summer project will likely be the K1 -- yet another fine Elecraft product to add to my QRP collection. I never use the NB on any other rig except for the Icom 706 in my truck and there it does a good job. I will not be using the K1 in the truck (or any vehicle) and I do not have a lot of spiky noise around here. So, is there any other reason why the NB on the K1 would be useful? 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Eric, A question please... Can the K3/0 run a K3 without the remoterig units? IE: Over a serial connection between the 2 K3's? My appologies if this question has been asked before. Yes. Just use a null modem cable and mic and audio cables between the K3/0 and K3. We have tested this configuration here. [Elecraft] Remote Rig without local K3 ?
I am considering a second K3 and wondering if I can use the Remoterig system with a computer and HRD/DM780 but without the K3 or K3-0 on the local end until I can afford the second K3 or do I need to wait until I can get the second radio? Will it do digital as well or is there timing or something from the local rig required for the digital operation? Re: [Elecraft] K2 audio issue on CW T/R transition
I have K2 #1239. I did all the A to B mods, and the rest of them, and added the DSP. Made a huge difference by my reckoning. I did them all at once. Gl 73, Guy.
