Hi, Something like it happens with the DVK playback buttons (M1-M4): If you assign some function to it, and you try to playback a dvk message via CAT commands, it will do whatever you have assigned to DVK buttons. Actually the play dvk message CAT command mimics pressing the front panel button instead of just playing teh DVK itself. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Another way to access APF
Years ago Gateway bundled a so-called AnyKey keyboard with their PCs: you could assign a macro (series of keystrokes) to any key on the board, even the ENTER key. You could also remap any keys as you liked. This was all done in the keyboard firmware; no software application necessary. This was immensely useful in seemlessly integrating different software applications (say, a foreign language dictionary, a text editor and keyboard language layout), or for just extending or improving the software developer's idea of how his program should be used or which keys should be used for which functions. Wouldn't something similar be a useful feature in software defined radios? You could customize your rig by appending (or prepending) a macro or series of button pushes to ANY button on the front panel. Add QSY to the SPLIT key, as you mentioned, etc. Instead of being limited to a few programmable function keys every button on the panel would in a sense be programmable, or at least extendable. 73, Drew AF2Z On Sat, 30 Jun 2012 07:45:03 +0100, you wrote: Al Lorona wrote: There was recent discussion about the need to HOLD a pushbutton to turn on the APF. Re: [Elecraft] K3/KX3 Operating Tip: APF (audio peaking, filter) for weak-signal CW work
I do not understand how assigning APF to a PF button makes things any easier. From what I have seen in the comments, the problem is that it is a button Hold problem. PF1 and PF2 are button hold functions - why not just hold the Dual PB button and use it as-is? The macro facility is seriously overplayed as an answer to missing functionality. Remember that the K3 has only TWO dedicated macro buttons, PF1 and PF2. Anything beyond that requires hidden controls which are a nightmare for the guest operator. This is getting tiresome. If you want 101 buttons get a TS-990. what you are asking requires not only modifications to the firmware (when have you seen any of the Japanese manufacturers make general firmware updates that add new features?). In addition, it requires a new front panel and keypad to change the legends to match the changed functions - if changes that would be confusing to guest operators are to be avoided. 73, ... [Elecraft] [K3] Quick split (Was Another way to access APF)
I liked the Quick-Split button on the IC-756 PRO3 I had. You could program the amount of the split, say +2, in a menu, so pressing the split button would engage the split mode and move VFO B up 2 kHz. DXLab's Commander rig control module has the same function, but it's greatly expanded. It has four buttons above the display of the VFO B frequency, 1, 2, 5, and 10. Clicking on any of those buttons puts the radio in split, turns on the subreceiver if available, and sets VFO B up that much. Pressing the CTL key while clicking on the button sets VFO B that much lower in frequency. It's simple and easy. Double clicking on a DX spot with a QSX frequency in the SpotCollector module sets the K3 to the spotted station's frequency/mode/split. http://www.dxlabsuite.com/ 73, Jim N7US -Original Message- *Geoff, While I agree with your comments regarding split, how would you have it work? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 internal battery charger
NiMH-only far as I know. There are safety issues with Li, and NiCd types aren't often used any more. If several charger settings are offered, it's a sure bet that some user will set it wrong for the battery type being charged. This can damage batteries and in turn cause them to bulge or leak. Could produce disappointing results for the KX3 owner. I see problems like the above in consumer products all the time. The user leaves the charger enabled, then puts non-rechargeable cells in the device. And then we get it back for repair NiMH offer the best compromise, imho. And the KXBC3's charge rate is around C/10 (10 hour charge time, roughly), so the NiMH cells won't overheat. Wayne's chosen best for all of us, seems like. matt W6NIA On Sat, 30 Jun 2012 10:33:59 -0400, you wrote: I know the internal battery charger for the KX3 is still being finalized, but my question is: will it be able to charge differnt types of batteries like lithium or just nicad? Re: [Elecraft] help - firmware hangup
Thanks to all for replying. Several things... the radio doesn't respond to the PWR switch; it keeps blinking TX and MDU LD. The only way to cycle on/off is via the power supply. I installed a Belkin usb-serial adapter which has worked fine in the past. I disconnected the microHAM interface and ran a K2 serial cable direct from the adapter to the radio [I have read here that the K2 cable will work, and I have used it with the K3 previously, before getting the microHAM interface]. I restarted the computer, closed programs, etc. I get the same problem: no comm between computer and radio. It seems that the radio's ability to communicate with anything has been somehow corrupted. There's no way that I can force any software loading without a connection. Still stumped. ...robert On 6/30/2012 14:43, Robert G. Strickland wrote: I have lost contact with my K3. Re: [Elecraft] help - firmware hangup
Neither microHAM nor Elecraft recommend installing firmware through one of their devices and the microHAM router (the software in your PC that implements K3 port sharing for the microHAM CW keyer). You'll need a USB to Serial adapter or real RS-232 cable. From the help page I pointed you to earlier: If you are using a software sharing program such as N8LP's LP-Bridge or microHAM's Router between your personal computer and your K3's RS-232 port, change the cabling so that the PC is connected directly to the K3 without an intervening software forwarder. These programs send K3 Programmer's Reference commands, and a K3 in its bootstrap loader isn't able to process those commands. Some commands may put the K3 bootstrap loader into an unresponsive state. It works fine if you don't start from where you are now. Dick -Original Message- From: Robert G. Re: [Elecraft] help - firmware hangup
Bob... On page 32, KE7X offers that key combination for initializing parameters to the default setting. I'm not sure if that applied to my situation, but I was trying everything. I used that combination to get the radio to communicate with the Elecraft utility. I had done some other things, also, like removing a microHAM interface, installing a usb-serial adapter and running a straight cable. Now, which of these - including key push/hold - re-established computer-radio comm I can't say for sure. But, problem is now solved. Regarding the manual, it's useful. There's a lot of added detail and discussion of various K3 topics which makes for interesting reading and, perhaps, better utilization of the radio's capability. YMMV. John I have no knowledge of what Elecraft is going to do. In general there are three distinct technologies out there and it is difficult to make a charger that crosses those boundaries. Re: [Elecraft] Parameter Initialization (EE INIT)
Let me add my recommendation *against* doing Parameter Initialization (EE INIT) for the K3 or the KX3 - the same also applies to a Master Reset for the K2. It is to be used only as a last resort - if you have saved the configuration at a time when all was working just fine, it is not a big deal to reload that configuration file. It will be of no benefit to do a configuration save just before doing the EE INIT because restoring that configuration is quite likely to repeat the error. In the case of the K2, there is a nice chart for recording your menu settings in the K2 A to B mod instructions. You could record the K3 menu settings in a similar manner, but there is no convenient form for that. Yes, when doing a K2 repair, I may do a Master Reset just because -- I will be going through all the alignment and calibration procedures anyway, and it is easy for me - I have had a lot of practice with over 700 repairs - it is not as easy for the unpracticed owner. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/30/2012 3:31 PM, Howard Stephenson wrote: At K3 Support we very rarely ask someone to do the Parameter Initialization (EE INIT) If you did not have a good CONFIG file saved you could spend a good hour turning options back on, redoing calibrations and filter set up. You can turn APF on for one preset and off for the other. This control is closer to where the action is than DUAL PB, and I find it more convenient to use. Although this still involves HOLDing a button it may provide a better alternative to the whole business of enabling APF. That suggestion will work, of course, and so too will the macro route - but both of them are work-arounds, to compensate for functionality that is missing from the button where it belongs. The same applies to SPLIT: the K3 is the only high-end radio with a non-configurable SPLIT button. All the others have an option to configure that button as Split and QSY - but in the K3, that function must be assigned to some other button, while the SPLIT button where that functionality should be is no longer used. The macro facility is seriously overplayed as an answer to missing functionality. Remember that the K3 has only TWO dedicated macro buttons, PF1 and PF2. [Elecraft] T1 ATU problem?
I have been hooking up a G5RV Lite I am hooking up the antenna twin lead balanced line to an elecraft wideband HF balun I built which then connects to a little Opek SWR meter then to the T1 which connects to the radio, either a K1 or an FT817ND. (Described in reverse direction.) At first, I had a problem with a short coax connector that was not conducting due to a broken PL259 connector so I removed that converted it to have two lugs to connect the balun to the end of the antenna feed line's SO239. When I put it all together at home started testing conductivity ruling out any shorts or breaks, I noticed conductivity between the shields the center feed. I finally isolated it to the T1 wherever I test the outer to the inner leads of the BNC connectors, there is no resistance they all conduct. Something is wrong with this recently purchased pre-built unit, wouldn't you agree? I just want to be sure about this before I call /or send it back for some repair so I thought I would check to see what anyone thinks or might suggest. I don't think there is anything that I could have done to cause this but one never knows, I guess. Could I have done something to create a short in the tuner by hooking it up improperly at one time or another, possibly? I would hate to think that these instruments are that 'fragile' but then again I am not that experienced, yet, being a ‘rookie’. Any suggestions or comments are welcome. Sidney- This is normal. Take a look at the schematic for the T1 tuner (in the manual) and you will see there is a DC path through transformer T2. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The last two weeks have been cold and wet. Highs in the upper 50s are the best so far but that may change next week. Looks like I'll get a little sun, a short reprieve from the rain, and temperatures in the low 60s again. I wish I could send my weather east to Colorado; they could use a few inches of rain and I can easily spare it. They put up the fire danger signs last week more out of habit than necessity. Normally it is drier and warmer for the 4th. Propagation has been up and down being effected by the M class flares. I was sending when I heard a blast of noise which persisted until the end of the contact. It wasn't just me because the op on the other end mentioned it too. A sharp spike of noise followed by continued static. However, during the contact the noise did not effect copy but there was a little QSB which did grab a few characters.
