[Elecraft] K2 Internal Battery Replacement ?
It's clear my K2 battery is in need of replacement I'm wondering if anyone has come up with an alternative to the standard sealed lead acid as fitted. Weight is not the main consideration but capacity and ease of charging. Any thoughts? 73, Deni F5VJC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mufflied audio - new issue
Not sure what happened but after a full reset everything is beautiful again. Transmit audio is as it should be. I wish I would have saved previous settings but it didn't take too long to get most of them back to normal. It was actually fun to go through the configurations because I am ashamed to say that they have not changed since I purchased this rig from K2MLB. Re: [Elecraft] K3 DNR
Hi Fred, I have a similar set-up with yours, on one side K3+P3 and other side FT5K+SM5K+LPpan both connected to Quadra amp. My primary choise for low bands is K3 due excellent flexibility of AGC and static noise exclusion from AGC loop. My FT5K is batch March 2010 and K3 is Dec 2011 with 2.7/2.1/400/250 roofs with dual RX. Side by side in low bands (40 and lower) the K3 performs far better than FT5K mainly due AGC/NR setting combination, on higher bands mostly in SSB my choise is FT5K due excellent DNR algorithms. Now there is no perfect radio in the world, in my humble oppinion the combination K3+FT5K is the killing one. BTW, I feed both audio outputs in SM5K speakers via a Behringer HA4700 (feeding also two headphones and one computer sound card) so I spent many hours A/B analysis. Another remark, the learning curve of K3 was few times longer than FT5K, I still play around with different DSP/AGC/NB combinations in different band conditions, I have abt 4-5 standard setting combinations for CW/SSB/digitals, antenna type, prop cond type. vy73 de VE3GNO Daniel www.qrz.com/db/ve3gno From: Fred Smith m...@mo-net.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, September 2, 2012 5:39:01 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 DNR I have been a Yaesu fan for many years and currently have a FTDX-5000MP and a Quadra amp in essence a 1kw radio in every way from 6-160m. Re: [Elecraft] K3 DNR
Daniel I did not know that I would find you here also a voice from someone who knows both radios this morning I was working KH2L on 40m and found what you are saying to be true. Over the weekend worked several new band countries on 80m was good for a change with the contest and the K3 fared well on 80m also better than the 5000 but when I started on 20/15/12/10m I thought it was just me not know how to adjust the K3. Many of my problems are not being well acquainted with the K3 still studying the manual and Fred Cady's book. Thanks again for your post I was wishing that I had not posted but did receive some good info that I didn't have when I started. So I guess I'll be more careful of what I post in the future it's not good here to like any other radio I see. But I really do like my Elecrafts or wouldn't have bought so much from them lol. Hi Fred Wellcome to my world, in the last 9 months that I owned the K3 I still discover new things, the ALC/NB/NR combination is a never ending story. In lower bands noise is our biggest enemy and there is a very thin line between results but that thin like make the difference between copy or no copy sometimes. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Utility and Mountain Lion problem
A lot of people will not know how to access the preferences file. Click on the McIntosh HD icon on your desktop In the Finder window command line click on GO, this will bring up a drop down box. Near the bottom of the box you will find Go To Folder The folder you want to got to is /Users/username/Library Preferences Use caution at this point as there are a number of Elecraft files out there. Look for K3UtilPrefs and P3UtilPrefs These are the files to delete based on whether you are having trouble with the K3Utility or P3Utility. These files and folders are normally hidden from view. If you wish to just navigate to the files using the finder, you can un-hide the files by doing the following. CAUTION: THESE FILES ARE HIDDEN FOR A PURPOSE. UNLESS YOU ARE REALLY COMFORTABLE WITH THE OS, I AM SURE APPLE WOULD RATHER YOU NOT DO THIS. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MODIFYING, ADDING OR DELETING. In the Utilities folder: Open Terminal. At the prompt $ type the following: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true Press return to execute. To re-hide the files and folders: Again open Terminal. At the prompt $ type the following: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false Press return to execute 73s Jim, W4ATK On Sep 3, 2012, at 5:03 AM, Mike n...@nf4l.com wrote: Is this making it to the reflector? 73, Mike NF4L On 9/1/12 10:44 AM, Mike wrote: Would one of you please share? 73, Mike NF4L On 9/1/12 7:15 AM, Nicolas Drin wrote: Thank to Adrian VK4TUK... 5 minutes after my threat he mailed me the solution !!! Rather than going with an Elecraft tuner and amp I decided to go another direction that gave me a few more options an Alpha amp and a new Alpha 4040 auto tuned soon to be released. In the interim I'm using a Palstar AT-Auto till the Alpha gets here the last of Sept or Oct. Just finished ordering a Array Solutions Six Pack SO2R Dual Controller for the K3's and a Bandmaster with a few extras. Being rather new to Elecraft I have only had my K3's for about a month I'm still searching for a way to continuously adjust the DNR from the very lowest to the most aggressive with a dial while listing. I'm able to do this with my FTDX-5000 and find it to be one of my most used features and most effective I might add with that ability. Is there a way for me to setup a knob to adjust the DNR like that in the K3, I'm sure there must be and it's just me not finding it, that good of a feature I'm sure would not be left out. [Elecraft] reverse and over voltage protection
Some have suggested I post this snippit of info. Just come back from C56W where I used a KX3. Unfortunately there were several power cuts whilst there and I used both a main fed psu and a motor cycle battery (floated this off the power supply). The mains when present varied from 180V to 260V and the output varied a little too. Having seen a catastrophic failure of another QRP rig when an over voltage occurred in the past I protected my KX3 when running off a non-battery external supply. The circuit is very similar to the FT817 voltage conditioner from AD5X http://www.ad5x.com/images/Articles/Condx817RevA.pdf from where I obtained inspiration but this time I used a fixed voltage LD1085V120 low voltage drop regulator which is a 12V T0220 version and with a heatsink will easily sink 3A, a KX3 will draw about 2A at 10W. I used a 600W 15V zener across the input, I added a 3 amp fuse on both the gnd and +ve side. 16V 10uF capacitor between in and ground and another between out and ground. No switch required, no resistor network. Note I tested a couple of devices to make sure I really did get 12V, some were a little low at 11.6-11.9V when 13.8V in. I also added a little push to make switch and LED to indicate when power was available. This meant that the supply into the KX3 is both reverse and over voltage protected and I use a set of power poles on the Elecraft supplied leads into my little gizmo. One less thing to worry about when I was the DX station. 72 Dom M1KTA Dom -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/reverse-and-over-voltage-protection-tp7562063.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] DNR
I want to thank Fred, Daniel, Frank and several others who posted actual information on this subject. Not only do I now have an understanding of the DNR tuning in the K3 but the DUH factor slipped in and I can see the method to the madness on the other controls as well. I am just over a week into a new K3 and have a long way to go. One thing I have learned that operator error is rampant early on. Yesterday I was following a CW signal and it really sounded funny and I had a tough time tuning him in. Turns out I had the Notch button pushed inadvertently. Yeah, I know. It will happen again I am sure. While it is entirely possible that the EL5146C was dragging down the output of the +5v regulator and causing the KPA100 firmware IC to fault, but I cannot tell from this distance. Don, that was exactly the problem. The EL5146C had shorted internally, and was bringing the 78L05 to current limit at about 1 volt. As for your wattmeter problems, I suspect that the diodes D16 and D17 may be half bad. Yes, that is rare, but possible - they have been damaged enough to change their characteristics but not make them either open or shorted. I would recommend arbitrarily replacing them and then try the wattmeter calibration again. For initial settings, adjust R26 to produce 43k ohms to ground as measured at U5 pin 5, and R27 to give 43k ohms as measured at U5 pin 3. After that do the null adjustment and see what happens. Re: [Elecraft] SDR_Sound_Cards
Thanks to N8LP for the info he posted below. One happy discovery that might help eliminate some E-MU 0204 USB soundcard driver angst for Win 7 64 bit users: Windows 7 64 bit has an E-MU driver resident in the operating system. This driver will *not* automatically install when the 0204 card is first plugged in, but is easily installed from Device Manager via the Update Driver utility. Win 7 will find the driver and install the 0204 card in about 5 seconds. The driver does not seem to have a graphical user interface, but works fine on my system with NaP3 for sampling rates up to 192K. This driver is dated 11-12-2010 and is version 6.6.1.1 by Creative Labs. Follow Larry's instructions for defaulting the sample rate to 192 K in Windows mixer setup and set the output to something other than the EMU 0204 in NaP3 setup and it should work well. Bill, WA4KBD -- FYI to all reading this thread: The 4GB RAM issue only appears to affect playback. The problem is that the audio will break up/lose sync after a period of time. This only applies, of course, if you actually listen to the output of the SDR. If you select another sound card in the Output selection in NaP3, it will be fine. You really don't need 192kHz for playback, since the widest filter is 10kHz. So any sound card will do just fine, including a built in one. You can still select the E-MU for Input and use 192kHz sampling for input. Therefore, you don't need to give up your extra RAM. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Memory Editor and EXCEL Spreadsheet
There is a way to move a group of lines with the K3 Memory Editor grid. You can use this to insert a blank line (as well as more involved moving). Select (at the left margin) the line you want to empty and the lines below. Press CTRL-X to cut the selected lines. Cut copies to the clipboard and deletes. Select the desired target line, and then press CTRL+V to paste the clipboard contents into the target line (and its successors, using the length of the clipboard). This is what I meant by Cut, copy and paste operate on selected rows under the Edit Menu topic in the admittedly sparse K3 Frequency Memory Editor Help page. You can use the keyboard cut paste shortcuts CTRL+X and CTRL+V, or right click the selected rows for a context menu that includes cut and paste, and there are cut/copy/paste items on the Edit menu at the top of the dialog. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: Bob Jeter [mailto:bobje...@verizon.net] Sent: Monday, September 03, 2012 9:33 AM To: Dick Dievendorff Subject: Re: K3 Memory Editor and EXCEL Spreadsheet Thanks Dick, You are right abt the tags and it was driving me nuts! Bill, Thank you for relaying that for the rest of us. I guess I am one of those Larry was referring to. Larry, Thank you for doing the extra work amidst my insistence the card was crap. I will give your instructions a try and connect one up to my Win 7 machine again. I have never used the 0204 to listen from. It has only been used for the input from the SDR/LPan. I will give it another shot nevertheless. The best thing about Win 7 is having the ability to set the cards parameters from within the sound applet through the Control Panel. You could try doing it manually to jump-start it. You have to do each band separately. [Elecraft] K2 - Sideband Issue??
Hi, My K2 S/N 47XX is about 6-7 years old and has functioned relatively well since I built it. A few days ago I attempted to use it to check into a local 10 meter net and was told I was on lower sideband. The display indicated upper sideband, U as it should on that band. The displayed frequency was the usual net frequency. I changed the mode to L and was still unable to check into the net. My initial thought was that the last time I adjusted the CAL FIL I had setup on the opposite sideband although I've used the radio since with good success. Then I remembered the OP1 filter is used for transmitting and is not adjustable so that seemed to rule out setting up on the opposite sideband. Im aware there is a frequency inversion on 15 meters and above and have though the problem might be associated with that. This past weekend in the Colorado QSO party I operated portable on 20 meters and logged 76 Q's so that band seems to be transmitting and receiving properly. I've reviewed the K2 troubleshooting procedures in the manual as well as some on line sources and have not found anything that relates to this problem. I sure would be appreciative to anyone who can shed some light on where to start to resolve this issue. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Sideband Issue??
Jim, I conclude that you do not operate much on 80 or 40 meters! If your operation is mostly on 20 meters with only an occasional excursion to the other bands, then there is the possibility that you may not have noticed. Set the K2 to 40 meters and take a look at the BFO frequency for both USB and LSB. If my suspicions are correct, you will find them almost the same. If that is indeed the case, crank up Spectrogram and use a noise generator (or dead band noise) to show you the OP1 filter passband position, then lower the DAC value (or frequency) so the passband response is below the IF filter center rather than above. The BFO frequency will be in the vicinity of 4913 for LSB and 4916 for USB. Yes, the LSB settings will be used for USB on 15, 12 and 10 meters. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/3/2012 5:22 PM, Jim Harris wrote: Hi, My K2 S/N 47XX is about 6-7 years old and has functioned relatively well since I built it. Re: [Elecraft] [KXUSB]
Don, It is not the same. The KXUSB has a USB connector on one end and a 2.5mm stereo plug on the other end. It will work with the W1, W2, and KX3. There is no substitute for the KUSB within the Elecraft product line. As an alternative (that may be even better than the FTDI chipset), look on auction sites for Edgeport USB to serial converters. Note the distinction between adapters (consumer quality) and converters (commercial quality). I purchased an Edgeport 4 some time ago and it perform flawlessly. The consumer quality adapters often fail to work at the slower data rates as required by the K2. My Edgeport has no problem, but both the Prolific and the FTDI adapters will bog down when running HRD. Look on the popular auction sites for these Edgeport devices. At the home shack, I use a dedicated desktop computer which lives under the desk, and I have installed a PCIexpress card that gives me 2 real serial ports. I think that is the ideal solution - both the K3 and the KX3 can have a dedicated real serial port. The K2 now lives at the workbench and is driven by a real serial port on the workbench computer. Yes, I have several computers here - 8 networked computers and a NAS file server on my home network. Refurbished Lenovo computers are my computer of choice. Sorry for straying off topic, but if I can encourage others to use a dedicated computer for the hamshack, many problems go away. 73, Don W3FPR . Re: [Elecraft] [KXUSB]
Thanks everyone for the clarification. I should have known that the xg3 would not have a DB9. I have several from Radio Shack adapters which I use on Linux but would not work on the Mac. I downloaded the driver and now it works fine on my MacBook with the K3. [Elecraft] [K3] Keyer Pause
I'm trying to get my just built K3 on the air and have encountered a strange pause sometimes in cw character elements. Using a paddle set to Iambic B I frequently see a pause, sometimes a long pause. It seems to be at the last dash of a character. The pause comes and goes as I try to send and seems to be the same in test mode as well as live. Sometimes the pause is only about a 'dash' in duration, other times more like a 1/2 second. I can immediatly resend the group of words and everything is normal. The paddle is a Begali Leonessa and I use it regularly on their CW machine, usually at 20 or 25 WPM with no problems so I don't think it's paddle adjustments. A straight key on the K3 works fine. I see the same pause with K3 speed set to 16,20 and 25. Most of the settings are default. I changed to Iambic B. QRQ is Off, WGHT is 1.10. I have Fred Cady's book and have tried to set up per his instructions. I'm a total newby to the K3 so I'm sure its something simple but just can't figure it out. ... encountered a strange pause sometimes in cw character elements... ... a Begali Leonessa and I use it regularly on their CW machine... If I were me, I'd use the CW Machine, and bypass the built-in keyer. External keyer is always better, IMHO, as I'm used to the timing. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility and iPad
I have a couple pictures of the install on my qrz. The Installer still needs one more day to finish all the wiring and prepare for the arrival of the Hi Q 4/80 RT. This will make my weekdays away from home in Los Angeles a tad bit easier though Of course I always miss the XYL and my newborn son, Max! We probably have another two days (16-20 hours) plus worth of work to go before we are done with the install. We installed the Rammount for the iPad and the KX3 and it looks epic. The amps are mounted and the electrical and antenna installation is in progress. Still need to pull wire from engine and new breaker and solenoid to bed and husky toolbox to the deep cycle Optima battery and the amplifiers. The Hi Q 4/80 RT is still in transit so that install will wait until next week. In terms of control theough the ipad I am planning to use the iSDR software with a simple logging program (MacLogger possibly) and upload later when at my home QTH. I was doing research on IPad ham apps and am looking for other control software options. Even minimalistic control software besides iSDR. I was also curious if the KX3 utility software and terminal will work on the iPad. Also any perspective on new software developments for the iPad and ham radio software especially the KX3 would be super appreciated. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
