[Elecraft] Audio line out for digital modes
I'm considering going to digital modes with the SignalLink USB gizmo. Connecting via the headphone out or speaker out will kill the speaker audio. I'd like to add an audio line out, not necessarily gain-controlled, but capable of operating into the SignalLink's 600 ohm impedance. Might bring out through the disused external speaker jack. Any suggestions before I take on the ol' 100 W iron? Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB audio problem(an update)
George, Do you have the updated shield on that KPA100? Shield over the speaker magnet and a narrow notch at the SO-239 jack and solder lugs to directly connect the SO-239 jack to the outer surface of the shield. If you have all those, there should be no change in the K2 behavior when installing the KPA100. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/28/2012 9:25 PM, George Winship, NC5G wrote: After some extensive on the air testing with my Son, this is what we have found. One by one I eliminated pieces of equipment starting with the KPA500, then the KAT100, followed by removing the KPA100 from the K2, then changing power supplies, hooking the basic K2 to the 2.5A ps that I power the KX3 with. This ps is about 3ft. from the K2 on the floor, under the desk. In this configuration, the audio was clean. Even though not connected, I turned the KPA500 on(which is about 4 inches from the right side of the K2) and this introduced some small artifacts which would suggest that the VCO mod would be worthwhile. Following this, I reinstalled the KPA100. With the small PS still connected(the K2 does not recognize the KPA100), the bad audio problems returned. Disconnecting the small PS from the K2, and connecting the Astron 35m(which is about 2ft. from the left side of the K2) to the KPA100, but keeping power below 10 watts to keep the KPA100 off the results were no different. Turning the power up to turn the KPA100 on, the results were no different. Power output through an external watt meter closely follows the power selected. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Audio line out for digital modes
Chris, I am going to assume a K2, but you did not state which transceiver you have. Take a look at the K2 Fixed Audio Output article on my website www.w3fpr.com. Boards are no longer available, but the circuit is simple enough to build on a piece of perfboard. You should also look at the updated design shown on Tom Hammond's (SK) website www.n0ss.net. If you lay all the components flat on the board, it will fit nicely between the front panel and the control board. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/29/2012 7:58 AM, Chris Kimball wrote: I'm considering going to digital modes with the SignalLink USB gizmo. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 in the Appalachian Mountains
Hi Steve, You were hiking in one of my favorite spots. You might want to check out the Summits On The Air program (www.sota.org.uk). There are a lot of SOTA summits in the Smokies. Clingman's Dome where you were is a ten (10) point summit and you would have had tons of callers had you called CQ SOTA on 14.061 MHz or 10.115 MHz. SOTA activity is really blossoming in the US and it is hugely enjoyable. There is an excellent system of spotting those activating SOTA summits, including an automatic link to the Remote Beacon Network. I activated three Arkansas summits back in September with my KX3 and was amazed at the pileups. Thanks for your report! Makes me want to jump in the car and head for our favorite base camp near Gatlinburg. 73, BILL GERTH, W4RK Jefferson City, MO First Licensed 1954 CWOPS #459 4 States QRP Group KX3 (S/N 112) On Oct 28, 2012, at 7:44 PM, Steve KC8QVO wrote: I took my KX3 with me this weekend in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. This is a world of difference from my FT-857D (about 15lbs trail weight without the solar panel). There was a contest going on this weekend and the CW portion of 40 meters was clogged with SSB so I wasn't able to make any contacts. The next morning I didn't have a whole lot of time to get the radio going. We ate breakfast and broke camp. We started out on top of Clingmans Dome and hiked down Sugarland Mountain. We were going to hike back up to Clingmans over the next two days, but I hurt myself and we were only 3000 feet in to a 4000 foot decent (then still had to make it all back up) so we called it quits and hiked back out to the road and got a ride. We dropped 3000ft in about 12 miles (a lot of it was up and down, not all down) the first day and 2 miles down another 1000ft (some up and down too) on the second day. [Elecraft] K3 KDVR
I recently installed the KDVR in my K3 and used it over the weekend during the CQ WW contest. In a word, it worked GREAT!!! I submitted the commands from N1MM and with its ESM feature it worked flawlessly. Since I was SP in the contest only two message were needed - Call and Exchange. Starting out in the contest I decided to increase the tempo of the messages a couple of times and it was so easy and took only seconds to change. No mic to the PC, no PC sound cards, no audio cables, etc. I'm very pleased with the KDVR and even have my voice on Monday morning! And the K3/KPA500 worked pretty well too... ;-) 73, Mitch WD0ECO -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-KDVR-tp7564750.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Auto Notch Filter Freeze
In January and October of 1992 I wrote two QEX articles on a project that another Ham and I worked on called the Hamblaster. We developed a DSP based sound card that used filter programs for noise reduction and auto notch. A feature that we added proved to be quite interesting in some respects and corrected problems where the DSP was outside the AGC loop. First of all the Hamblaster had its own AGC loop that maintained an optimal baseband level. There was an on screen option to freeze filters. My theory was Why design an auto notch that continuously adapts. You only need to converge on the interfering carrier once. After that, there's no need to re-adapt. If the interfering carrier changes, to readapt, you can press the auto notch button again. Because everything was done in software, we added buttons on the PC screen where you can set a parameter to automatically freeze the auto notch after a given time or you can manually freeze it. This worked well and after the notch was locked to carrier, there was no distortion. We even added a freeze button on the noise reduction. I noticed that when the filter adapted to ones voice. The LMS algorithm was, for the most part, was optimized to the person's voice characteristics and the filter was optimal for the whole QSO. The drawback was that it took several tries to get it right. Some times the filter lock on the high frequency elements of speech and other times on the low frequency components but it reduced noise to a certain degree without the usual artifacts in the noise floor. I thought that this would be an interesting feature to add to the K3 in the next firmware upgrade. [Elecraft] OT storm safety tip
Greetings, I'm n New Jersey riding out the current storm. Last night I got up to go to the bathroom and while walking the power went off putting the entire house in darkness. As a senior, living alone and no longer really steady on my feet, I was lucky not to stumble and fall. I have lots of LED lights around but wasn't carrying one at the time...so, during hours of darkness I am now wearing a small LED Headlight typenot all the time on my forehead but just loosely around my neck, like a necklace..very light and readily at hand in case the lights go out while I'm up and about. I also keep my cellphone in my T shirt pocket for the same reason, even during the day. my cheapskate alternative to a I've fallen and can't get up pendant device. Re: [Elecraft] KXPD3 APPLICATION NOTE UPGRADE SHEET TYPOS
Hi Kent: Your getting a firm spring with the upgrade kit was a kitting error. If you got only one spring with your KXPD3 paddles, it should have been the firm spring. The P/N for the light spring in the upgrade kit instructions is wrong. The correct part number for the light spring is E980239 according to an e-mail from the factory this morning. We'll correct the upgrade kit instruction sheet. Hope that helps! 73, Ron From: KENT TRIMBLE, K9ZTV [mailto:k9...@socket.net] Sent: Sunday, October 28, 2012 8:44 PM To: Ron D'Eau Claire Cc: pa...@elecraft.com; 'Elecraft' Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KXPD3 APPLICATION NOTE UPGRADE SHEET TYPOS Yup, you're right on all accounts, Ron. But typos and confusion still remain. If the original paddle that shipped with KX3 serial number 21 (kit version) had a firm spring, then why does my upgrade kit have an envelope labeled E980218 Spring, KXPD3 Firm? I don't need two firm springs. And how come the light spring envelope says E980239 when the parts sheet says E980236? Light is light, right? Surely there aren't two different light springs being shipped. Earlier KXPD3 all had the firm spring by default. After initial shipments and customer feedback, it was decided to build KXPD3s with the medium spring and include a firmer and lighter spring so the feel could be adjusted by changing springs. For those who already had KXPD3s with the firm spring, an upgrade kit was created that is documented by the KXPD3 UPGRADE KIT manual. That kit contained a medium and light spring for them to use for a lighter feel. That's why the upgrade kit document is a few days newer the original KXPD3 document. At the same time as the springs were changed, improved contacts were phased into the KXPD3. The new contacts are also included in the upgrade kit for those who had the early KXPD3s. Probably doesn't matter much, since sections are only seen/used by those who read the Nabble list on-line. Messages posted to Nabble are (eventually) copied directly to the main Elecraft email list-serv without any category or section. I believe the Elecraft pricipals involved- That is Wayne, Eric, and DSP guru Lyle (who is currently on vacation, I believe), read via the mailman.qth reflector, not Nabble. So, for the most part, not of that Nabble categorization matters, except to the minority that read there. That said, I like the sound (no pun intended- or was it...) or you suggestion. [Elecraft] KX3 - KX3BC problem (?)
I installed my KXBC3 this morning with no (apparent) problem and it passed all its tests. I set it to a 16 hour charge and put it into its Power-Off Pending Mode. The timer came on and began counting down. About two hours later, I walked in and decided to exit the Power-Off Pending Mode so I held the Band- and ATU Tune switches down as per page 3 of the instructions. Re: [Elecraft] Battery Charging
Ed, I am not sure why you chose the Elecraft reflector to ask a non-radio related question, but here is my 2 cents worth (and it may be worth no more than that since it is a SWAG) More information needed. Chargers that have linear power sources may have a problem - the transformers are designed for 50 or 60 Hz current, so the voltage out may not be as expected. However, many of the cellphone and camera battery chargers use switching circuitry, so my guess is that all may be well. Re: [Elecraft] Battery Charging
Years ago a buddy and I had a emergency generator that he built from a pair of 400 Hz aircraft generators. IMX, there is little or no problem running any 50/60 Hz gear off of 400 Hz. You certainly won't hurt anything. The problem is when going the other way -- trying to run something designed for 400 Hz off of a 50 or 60 Hz supply. The issue there was always the power transformers. 50/60 Hz transformers require a lot more iron to operate properly. That's why surplus 400 Hz power transformers always look so small and light compared to their 50/60 Hz counterparts with the same power ratings. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of EMD Sent: Monday, October 29, 2012 3:31 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Battery Charging Boeing aircraft provides 110volts but the cycles are 400, not the standard 60. Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB audio problem(an update)
Don, Yes, installed the updated shield and the KPA100 upgrade mods in 2010. A to B mods on the K2 were done in 2003. Also, did the SSB mod to broaden the bandwidth to 2.5 KHZ back then also. 73, George, NC5G George, Do you have the updated shield on that KPA100? -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-SSB-audio-problem-tp7564435p7564777.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Preamp?
Depends on the band - although I don't venture far off 40 meters, I used to have preamp on all the time on 40 until I read that due to noisy 40, the noise that the preamp amplifies is much harder on the ears than copying a reasonably strong signal without the preamp. I turned it off a year or two ago and haven't even noticed. Of course I may be missing some very weak signals... All depends on who/how you operate. For higher (and less noisy) bands, I believe preamp is often preferred. --Andrew, NV1B maineware.net .. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Preamp?
Gil, Unless your antennas are very inefficient, I would suggest that the preamp only does damage to the dynamic range if turned on for the lower bands (below 20 meters, 30 meters is a toss-up). Try this test - connect the antenna and listen to band noise (no signals). Then disconnect the antenna - if there is a difference between antenna connected and antenna disconnected, your receiver front end has enough gain. So turn off the preamp and try the same test again. Similarly, turn on the attenuator and go through the same test. At whatever settings you still hear an increase in atmospheric band noise when the antenna is connected, that is enough front end gain. To use the preamp when it is not needed will decrease the dynamic range of your receiver and reduce the number of weak signals that you can hear. Of course, if your main operating is working only extra strong signals, then you can run the preamp on for all bands and you will not know the difference except that your ears will suffer from the excessive atmospheric noise that is produced. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/29/2012 8:14 PM, Gil G. wrote: Hello, I am curious as to how much of the time you guys have your preamp on? Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Preamp?
I almost never use a preamp. Sure turning it on increased band noise but that does not mean I can hear weaker signals. The best simple test you can do is to disconnect the antenna. If the band noise drops when you disconnect the antenna, you have all of the sensitivity you can use. Adding the preamp just cripples the dynamic range of your K2 - its ability to handle strong signals without causing artifacts that sound like noise across the band obscuring weak signals you want to hear. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Gil G. No need for expensive sequencers HI. 73 Vic US5WE/K1WE (UW5W in VHF contests) KN29AU UARL VHF committee Chairman, UARL Lvov Branch LKK Moderator, UARL VHF portal http://www.vhfdx.at.ua DXCC card checker in Ukraine From: Brian Alsop als...@nc.rr.com To: Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, October 29, 2012 8:21 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 and sticking amp T/R relay Igor, Just what does this delay? Does it inhibit RF output from the K3 for 30 ms? If so it may chop parts of CW characters. The formula T=1200/W gives the dot length for a given WPM (W) At 40 wpm, one dot is 30 ms. Does it delay return to RX? 73 de Brian/K3KO n 10/29/2012 19:54, Igor Sokolov wrote: I had similar problem. The solution I use is the external TX delay circuit of 30 ms (adjustable) that utilizes 1 FET transistor, capacitor and couple of resistors. It is built into connector body and plugs into ACC socket of K3. Now my T/R relays in the amp are safe. 73, Igor UA9CDC - Original Message - From: briana als...@nc.rr.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, October 29, 2012 4:01 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 and sticking amp T/R relay Do this at the risk of QSD CW. Higher settings (10ms) cause this. The bad keying is independent of internal or external keyer. It is a bug that has never been fixed in the K3. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 10/28/2012 3:23 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Gary, The config menu TX DLY parameter will change the time from keydown to the onset of RF. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/28/2012 4:09 PM, Gary Smith wrote: My question for here is; if the amp is not properly sequencing with the K3, what setting can I change within the K3 to provide more time for the amp's relays to close before the K3 transmits? I remember there was a feature to allow ms changes for QSK in the K3. How do I find that option? And should I decrease the MS time in the K3 or increase it to let the perhaps relay in the amp have time to close first to avoid hot switching? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html - No virus found in this message.
