Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Eric Co.... Please relocate the Link/UnLink button.
I am happy with the present SUB control functions. I run diversity mode for eme (i.e. my main Rx receives vertical polarity 2m and the sub-Rx receives horizontal polarity 2m). I run in split mode to transmit using VFO-B, while my VFO-A stays tuned to 144.130 MHz. 144.130 is the center of a 60 KHz band that MAP65 receives. MAP65 runs JT65 to decode all signals inside the 60-KHz band. I have yet to try diversity reception on HF, but have no reason for the radio functions to be modified for diversity mode. Both receivers need to be tuned to the same frequency when in diversity reception so the VFO-A display is adequate. When running the sub-Rx in non-diversity then VFO-B shows it if unlinked. I vote no change. If this is to be changed then make it selectable as a CONFIG menu item (if that is possible). The KRX3 makes adaptive polarity reception of eme possible. No other commercial radio is this possible that I am aware of. The IQ+ from HB9DRI is a dedicated dual-Rx 2m direct conversion SDR which works elegantly for this. But it is a special piece of equipment for only 2m-eme. 73, Ed - KL7UW - Date: Tue, 05 Mar 2013 12:37:19 -0500 From: Richard Ferch ve3...@storm.ca To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Eric Co Please relocate the Link/UnLink button. This is a key point. Ian's first post in this thread makes it clear that his mental model of the two displays is that they track the two receivers. This mental model may work with a dual-receiver K3 in non-diversity mode, but it is not the most appropriate mental model for a dual-receiver K3 in diversity mode. In diversity mode VFO B does not track with VFO A; it is the subRX that tracks with VFO A. In diversity mode, from the point of view of operating the radio there is a single receiver controlled by VFO A. This receiver uses twice as much hardware as a normal receiver, and it allows two simultaneous antenna inputs instead of only one, but operationally speaking it is a single receiver. In other words, a K3 in diversity mode is functionally similar to a single-receiver K3 or a dual-receiver K3 with the subRX turned off: VFO A always displays the receiver frequency, and the VFO B display indicates where the transmitter will transmit in SPLIT mode. Switching from a VFO A vs. VFO B display model (the current design) to a main RX vs. subRX display model, as Ian has suggested, would waste the capability of the VFO B display in diversity mode (what's the point of dedicating display real estate to a second frequency display if it is forced to be identical to the first display?). Having the VFO B display tell you where the transmitter would be if you invoked SPLIT, exactly the same as it does in a single-receiver K3, is a more effective use of the display resources, particularly for someone wishing to work a split pileup on low bands. 73, Rich VE3KI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You must align 15 meters (or 17 meters) before 20 meters, and 30 meters before 40 meters (the band order is not important for the 2 band board) 3) After peaking the Pre-Mixer bandpass at P1 pin 6, go on to peak the TX Buffer output, and then with the probe still on the TX Buffer output, go back and touch up the Pre-Mix again - the 'scope probe may load the premix filter output a bit and must be tweaked again without the probe on P1 pin 6. An RF probe will show the rms RF voltage levels, or about 35% of these pk-pk values. Appendix E, or any ARRL Handbook shows how to build an RF probe. We also sell an RF probe kit for $10. Use an oscilloscope if you can get access to one. Test the rig on all bands too. The filter board is difficult to align the first time, so be patient when aligning it, and try to peak it on signals in receive, or in transmit with an RF probe or scope at the indicated places shown above. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Low Power Out / Hi Current
Jeremy, Strange problem. The K2 RF power detector consists of voltage divider R67 and R68 and diode D9. One end of R67 is connected directly to the BNC center conductor. That means your problem is quite a mystery. Could it be a bad coax or a faulty (or not soldered) BNC connector. The only other possibility I can think of is a broken PC trace, but those traces are quite large. If there is not a proper connection to the dummy load, the normal result is a HiCur message with the power set to a high level because the K2 is operating into an open circuit. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/7/2013 8:04 AM, JeremyJones wrote: Don, I suspected something might be wrong with the watt meter, as it was borrowed from work and had not been used in a while. This puts the RF Gain control at about 3:00. The K3 seems to handle strong signals a little better in the pileups. If I do this and do the RF calibrate with the XG3, is it recommended to put the RF Gain control at full gain (this is what I presently do), or leave the RF Gain control at 3:00? I seem the to favor the discussion that when in absolute mode, the RF gain control does not have any effect on the s-meter. There are so many things that affect the received s-meter reading that I only ever use it as a relative comparison meter. [Elecraft] HB button box for K3
I really miss extra programmable buttons on the K3. To remedy this, I created a button box that has 20 programmable buttons. It's pretty elementary with a 4x4 keypad and four push buttons. One PIC, one voltage regulator and a MAX232 for RS232. All buttons are in-circuit programmable. Things I really wanted on one button were SPLIT+1, SPLIT+5, UNSPLIT, PSK, FSK, modes and bands. Sure there are other ways to get there. Now for the rub. It can be directly plugged into the K3 but one would loose all other functions that use that port. Instead I use LPBRIDGE which allows up to five virtual ports (applications) to use the single K3 RS232 port. VSPE is used to bridge the real RS232 port to a virtual one for LPBRIDGE. I use LPBRIDGE all the time anyhow so no big deal for me. Nothing original. We will see how needed it really is in time. 73 de Brian/K3KO - No virus found in this message. Re: [Elecraft] What monitor to use?
I am using such a monitor because of space limitations (and because mine was free, too). It is a big improvement over the small screen on the P3 itself. But a bigger monitor is advantageous, because you can spot holes in pileups (etc.) more easily without having to change the span. I think if I had the room, I would get a bigger one. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Eric Co.... Please relocate the Link/UnLink button.
My name's Gary and I'm a DXer. I can't recall accidentally LINKing VFOs for a good year or more, not since I started using macros to drop into and out of split mode, set up the audio and filters etc. Couldn't the issue of DXpeditioners accidentally LINKing VFOs, or perhaps tuning the wrong VFO or nudging the knob, be solved simply by them locking their transmit VFO? FWIW I vote to fix other longstanding firmware bugs rather than fiddle with LINK, e.g.: - The CW/PTT sequencing glitch that sometimes screws up my CW if I release the PTT while still sending; - CW-in-SSB function producing no output but appearing to key the K3, sometimes (QSK+ related if I recall correctly); - The power surge that happens if I trigger the previous bug, then change to CW mode and hit the key (this one trips the KPA500 alarm and makes me say ouch!) CW-in-DATA-A could be useful too, in order to send a brief CW message to someone at the end of a RTTY or PSK QSO, or send QRZ, QRL or WRONG SIDEBAND or whatever. 73 Gary ZL2iFB -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft- boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Tony Estep Sent: Friday, 8 March 2013 3:59 a.m. To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Eric Co Please relocate the Link/UnLink button. Just a clarification. The K3 will initialise properly when using the DB15 cable provided, at the time it is switched on, the KAT500 is connected to a suitable live power supply. The KAT500 does not actually need to be switched on. If both are connected to the same power supply the KAT500 will switch on (with LEDs lit up) automatically when the power supply is switched on. [Elecraft] HB button box for K3
Brian, Do you have a schematic on the web for this, along with the other technical details? It was only yesterday that I found myself wishing for this capability. Jan, KX2A I really miss extra programmable buttons on the K3. 73 de Brian/K3KO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] HB button box for K3
If I understand this concept properly, its something like this. You have a box with multiple buttons on it. Each one sends a different macro string to the K3. Some kind of processor would be needed. Have to build a box with buttons on it and need serial output to go to the K3. If I wanted to prototype such a system, I would use a USB 10 digit keypad (about $5, has at least 15 usable buttons on it) and a USB to serial cable to go to the K3 (or KX3). For a processor, I would use a Raspberry Pi, which supports 2 USB devices. I would write somewhat simple software that runs when powered up that reads the characters coming from the keypad and sends appropriate macro strings to the radio. An alternative way would perhaps use an arduino processor, a homebrew switch matrix, and serial output to the radio. This would be a cheaper way but I think a lot more work. Cool project! 73 - Mike WA8BXN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - spikes that never move
Anthony, Been out of town, didn't see a reply to you when I got home and downloaded 500+ emails. :-) What P3 mode are you using? There is an identified problem with the K3--P3 IF cable. In Fixed Tune mode [where the ends of the span remain fixed and the VFO cursor moves as you tune], the bad IF cable will put weak signals approximately 14.5 KHz above and below the cursor. They move with the cursor hence you can never tune to them. Signals that slowly move by themselves are almost always external to the K3/P3. Our world is filled with a nearly countable infinity of RF noisemakers these days. CFL light bulbs are notorious and could account for the slow disappearance as they warm up. If your signals disappear when you remove the antenna, that's a pretty good indication that they're external to your radio. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org On 3/3/2013 11:08 AM, Anthony Lewis wrote: I have three spikes on my P3, however they do move - very slowly they will creep along the display. So, I have learned another lesson on paying attention to details. I did go back to the analog meter on 15M, 12M, and 10M. At 10W on the radio I was showing 3.5W on the analog meter. It has a correction factor of +40% for 20Mhz, so that would be a reading of 5W, about half of what it should be. I did the signal tracing from the manual. [Elecraft] Remote K3, the Easy way...
*Remote Control* I do a limited amount of travel, but when away from home, I like to be able to operate my K3 on the ham bands, and sometimes find that it gets a bit complicated getting things setup to operate. I’ve tried Ham Radio Deluxe and had mixed success getting connected up remotely. The biggest problem is the need to know your IP address (you can use DynDns or No-Ip). Plus, you still need to get the audio setup and running. However, I’ve found what seems to be a simpler process and allows for some added benefits. *Remote Control Computer Software using Team Viewer* To start with, I’m using TeamViewer which is free for non-commercial use. http://www.teamview.com http://www.teamview.com This is a computer remote control application that allows you to log into another computer and view the desktop and control the computer. The added benefits of TeamViewer is that it does not require you to know your base station computer IP address, and also includes a VOIP (Voice Over IP) so that you don’t need to start up a separate voice application like Skype. When setting up, you just need to learn a few things, like when starting up the VOIP, you need to enable the Voice-Over-IP and un-mute both the local and remote microphones (there may be a setting to do this by default, but I haven’t found it yet). I use an inexpensive computer headset with a microphone and get very good audio reports. There are more advantages to this where you can see your full remote desktop applications, as I’ll point out later. Incidentally, this will require that you keep your base station computer on all the time. I turn off the monitor, it’s not needed. If you’re a bit more ambitious, you may want to investigate using “Wake On Lan” for your computer, but again, this is more complicated, but you could save this step until later if you feel you need it. *Power Up the AC and Rig Control Enable* The next thing that you need to figure out is if you want to power your radio on and off remotely. I happened to have a control that I can use to turn on an AC power strip through a 15 amp AC relay. I modified a standard AC strip by adding a cable from the AC black wire to go up to the relay and then back down to the AC strip. Turning on the relay turns on the AC for my 12v power supply and my rotor control. This same control has a second relay that allows making a connection to the ACC2 connector on the K3 to remote power up the rig by pulling Pin 8 to Pin 5 (Gnd) for a short period of time to turn on the K3. Reference page 18 of the K3 manual for this. To power it off, you need to send a serial command to the rig from your K3 control software. There are other options to allow relay control through the computer. Simply do an on-line search for “usb relay” and you’ll come up with a number of options, for as low as $30. You should be able to work with a 10 amp, 120 volt relay to power your rig and a few light peripherals. The application that I wrote for the AC power strip also has a timeout, so that if I lose the connection, it will automatically turn off the rig after some period of time. You might also consider another relay that would trigger the PTT line and force a 5 to 10 minute timeout in case you lose the internet connection. *Remote K3 Control using NO5W software:* The K3 will of course need to be connected to the computer through the serial port. The connection that you used for updating your K3 firmware is the normal connection that is used for firmware updates. As I mentioned before, you can use Ham Radio Deluxe, however, I found that the CQX Client software available at http://www.no5w.com http://www.no5w.comto be easier to learn and use. The software package free and is intended for mobile contest logging (and seems very nicely suited for this task, interfacing with a GPS) but the thing that I like so well, is that once you connect up to your K3, there is a functional K3 application (by clicking “More” button in the upper center of the application) that allows you to control the K3 in a way that is very user friendly. We’re lucky that Chuck is such an avid K3 fan! For some examples: http://www.no5w.com/CQxK3RemoteKit.html http://www.no5w.com/CQxK3RemoteKit.html Quick Start Reference: http://www.no5w.com/Documents/QuickStartForK3Testing.pdf http://www.no5w.com/Documents/QuickStartForK3Testing.pdf Basically, it has an operational picture of the K3 with the controls activated so that each one works with the K3 using the same “tap” and “hold” features that you’re used to, including the Power switch. For remote operation, to turn the rig on, you pulse a set of contacts on the K3 ACC2 connector and the rig powers up. To turn it off, you press the “Power” button on the K3 application. Frequency control is pretty simple. The normal control uses the Up/Dn keys in conjunction with the resolution radio buttons just below the tuning knob. There’s an added feature using the

Re: [Elecraft] TX5K - Managing with inexpensive hardware
At this point (0200Z on 8 March), I'm up to 9 contacts, from 30 to 10m, on all 3 modes - in fact, I just worked them on 30m RTTY a few minutes ago. I wouldn't consider a K3 inexpensive hardware, but in the spirit of the discussion, I'll state that I don't have an amplifier, nor a tower, nor a beam. My antenna is a 20m quarter-wave vertical (16ft/5m high), with a 40ft/12m wire strung from its tip to an avocado tree branch at about 8ft/2.5m above ground. Technically, it's an Inverted-L, fed with about 50ft/30m of RG-8X straight into the shack to the KAT3. There are two quarter-wave radials for each band strung in the sand, and the base of the antenna is supported by a four foot (1.25m) steel fence post buried in the ground (which is very sandy). HASL is 8ft/2.5m. 24kV power lines are 60 feet away in one direction and 95 feet in another. I also snagged XT2TT the other day on 12 CW. So, yes, it's an awesome rig - it hears well, and it works well, once the operator figures it all out! Bayard R. I noticed, before I even started to remove it, that my VFO B knob has cracked :( 73, ~iain / N6ML On Thu, Mar 7, 2013 at 6:06 PM, Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com wrote: It's quite a bit larger and might interfere with other controls. 73, Wayne N6KR On Mar 7, 2013, at 3:54 PM, Rick Prather wrote: Has anyone tried the tuning knob for a KX3 as the VFO B knob on a K3? Re: [Elecraft] P3 - spikes that never move
You might not know it yet, but some LED bulbs are bad RFI devices as well, esp., the cheap ones. My entire office and workshop are LED lighted and I have removed the junk devices. I paid too much for some that are inferior. The US bulbs seem to be the best choice. Not only is the construction better IMO, but I don't see the radiation issues either. PC's and power warts are always on the watch list. I am amazed by the noise output of older HDD. Nasty stuff. I am now using SSD's and the best HDD for storage... still issues with noise on some bands. Shielded power cables have less issues in general, but that is also based on quality. Shielding means nothing unless properly terminated on both ends and the quality of the shielding and termination as well (look at the Coax we use to learn much about shielding... another science in its own right). 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Fred Jensen Sent: Thursday, March 07, 2013 6:04 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 - spikes that never move Anthony, Been out of town, didn't see a reply to you when I got home and downloaded 500+ emails. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO B knob
Thanks Wayne and Iain, I was about ready to order a VFO A knob which I think is acceptable on VFO B but figured the KX3 one would be better. I also had a cracked VFO B knob. Looked like the insert was too tight and stressed the knob. That was quickly replaced by Elecraft a couple of years ago.
