[Elecraft] K3 Power out jumps on power change
Hi, I'm having problems with my K3-100 with power out. If Power is 12 watts or less (100W pa not in use) and I adjust the power out then the power goes to the new level with no problem, as long as power requested is less than 12 watts. When using the 100Watt PA if power is adjusted it will cause power to jump to 110 watts for a second or less, then go to the requested power. This causes my KPA500 to fault. The problem is occuring with either the power knob or software from the computer. After the power stablizes at the new level then it is fine untill I change power again. This occurs in any mode. Any clues that can help me fix this? SN is 5651, I built the K3 in August of 2011, it worked fine untill the last month. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power out jumps on power change
Hi Gordon, Hopefully it is a simple calibration problem. Redo the Calibrate Transmitter Gain from the K3 Utility program Calibration tab. If you still have problems you may need to touch up the results as directed at the top of page 62 of the K3 manual. Be sure to check every band. Typically the problems will only occur on one or two bands. If you have difficulty with these manual adjustments come back with questions and those that have performed the adjustments will help guide you through. 73, Mike K2MK Gordon LaPoint wrote Hi, I'm having problems with my K3-100 with power out. [Elecraft] OT--RFI Issue
Make sure ALL of his cable drops are terminated at a piece of equipment or are capped with a 70 ohm resister. Any open ends of cable act as an antenna. This is the most common offender! Make sure all splits go through a cable splitter of correct impedance. Make sure all cable splitters are turned the correct direction. Time Warner installed one backwards in my house causing poor TV reception. Lastly, your cable company has the option to up the signal strength at individual houses. Perhaps your neighbor's level is so low as to be a problem. When I had my house remodeled several years ago the electrician thought is was OK to simply twist the cable center conductors and shields together and put wire nuts on them. He did this in several spots. Needless to say he got an earful from me. -- John Fritze Jr K2QY AARA president 2013 ACACES secretary 2013 Albany County RACES Radio Officer ARES ENY DEC Northern District ARES Albany County EC Hudson Div. Re: [Elecraft] OT--RFI Issue
These kind of installation problems are not rare. TWC did the original installation here. A few years later while troubleshooting a low signal problem they found: 1)Several corroded connectors from the street to the house 2)An extra unterminated splitter in their house mounted box. 3)Replaced an F connector in the wall plate fixture for the cable modem. 4)Replaced the cable modem. A few weeks later they had to come out to replace the modem in (4) that was a huge source of RFI. (Switching supply I believe). New modem was quiet. I'm sure the replaced modem will end up in somebody else's house. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 3/19/2013 13:18, John Fritze wrote: Make sure ALL of his cable drops are terminated at a piece of equipment or are capped with a 70 ohm resister. [Elecraft] [K3] Possible remedy for my noisy K3 and hiss?
I'm in the early stages of trying this out but thought I'd share in interest of helping someone else. I've been using AGC threshold 10. Im always fiddling with attenuator and rf gain. I was listening to some activity on 20 40 and began playing with agc settings. I ended up at a threshold that is totally not what I suspected to like. 2. You've got to be kidding,right,2? The downside is this can really decrease volume available especially with NR. I've just been using this a night and morning but one thing is apparent, I'm not constantly fiddling with attenuator and rf gain anymore. Threshold 2 slope 5-10. Noise level s5 on 20m. I also picked up a GAP/BHI speaker and like the NR. It doesn't reduce volume as much. The best K3 match I found is NR F8-2 or 3. I really don't wish to use NR. The hiss I've been complaining about with hi cut above 2.4 or 2.5 is drastically reduced also. I don't like 3.0 but 2.8 is pretty good. I've got to spend more time in the saddle with these settings but I'm putting this out there for anyone else having pains with noise/rf gain. Once again bottom line: I'm not constantly fiddling with attenuator and rf gain with threshold 2. 73 Mike R Play me some fiddle, but no stinkin' violin! Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Possible remedy for my noisy K3 and hiss?
Mike, With that low a threshold setting, I suspect that you evaluated that setting with noise alone rather than how much noise is heard between breaks in the signal. Review the Noisy K3 article on my website www.w3fpr.com paying particular attention to the 'Caution' note in the AGC THR section. That article will give you guidance on what the effects of the changes will be so you can evaluate each separately. Do the evaluation with any external NR speaker bypassed or removed. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/19/2013 10:53 AM, Mike Rodgers wrote: I'm in the early stages of trying this out but thought I'd share in interest of helping someone else. Hi Don, Not so. I made the adjustments while listening to qso's in progress. I guess I didn't make that clear. Not strong ones that block all the noise but medium ones. This may come down to operator preference but it's something to try. And the tell all as I said is I'm no longer constantly fiddling with attenuator and rf gain to try to get something I like. 73 Mike R Play me some fiddle, but no stinkin' violin! Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] Re: [K3] Possible remedy for my noisy K3 and hiss?
Caution: A caution about evaluation of the effects of the change - please listen to the noise level that appears during breaks while listening to a signal. If you listen to only the noise level with no signals present, you will find that the noise level decreases as you lower the threshold setting. This is a false perception. What is actually happening is that you are reducing the level where the AGC response begins, and since the noise is now producing AGC action, the noise will reduce the gain of the receiver, giving the appearance that the noise level is being reduced, when in fact, just the opposite will happen when listening in the presence of signals on the band. [Elecraft] Kenwood MC-60 Microphone to K3
Good Afternoon, my name is Mark Griffin and my call is KB3Z. I have used a Kenwood MC-60 microphone ever since I purchased my K3 four years ago. I would like to connect the microphone to a boom assembly, but trying to find a microphone cable that would be long enough to connect to the K3 and then to the front of the boom might be difficult. I tried Heil, but Jerry Lynch gave me no help whatsoever. Does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes microphone cables? Thanks!! Re: [Elecraft] Kenwood MC-60 Microphone to K3
Hi Mark, I'm not sure exactly what you have to work with and what you want to do. I don't have an MC-60 but did some searching for information on it. Seems one kind has the microphone hard wired to the base, so it doesn't seem like that one would work easily with a boom. Another variation says you can use the microphone with out the base, just use the coiled cord as an extension for the microphone cable on the mic. If you search for 8 pin microphone extension you will find many products available, both coiled and straight cords. 73 - Mike WA8BXN ---Original Message--- From: pastor...@verizon.net Date: 3/19/2013 12:54:57 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Kenwood MC-60 Microphone to K3 Good Afternoon, my name is Mark Griffin and my call is KB3Z. Re: [Elecraft] Kenwood MC-60 Microphone to K3
The Kenwood MC-60/60A Instruction Manual shows that the MC-60 mic element has an 8 pin connector on the back wired identically to the typical Kenwood/Elecraft transceiver (mic on 1/7, switch on 2/8). For use on a boom one typically does not want a coiled cord. I would recommend picking up 6 to 10 feet (depending on your boom and rig placement) of Heilwire which contains one shielded pair of wires and one unshielded pair of wires and two 8 pin mic plugs to make your own cable. The shielded pair should be on pins 1/7 (mic) and the unshielded pair on pins 2/8 (PTT) with the shield folded back/connected to the *shell* of the connectors. If you don't need the switch, any shielded twisted pair cable will work just fine with the twisted pair connected to pins 1/7 and the shield connected to pin 8. A length of CA5/CAT6 cable also works - use one of the four twisted pairs for pins 1/7 and another of the twisted pairs for pins 2/8. Finally, if you prefer to connect the mic to the K3's rear panel, a good quality twisted pair cable connected to pins 1/7 on the mic and tip/sleeve of a 3.5mm plug will work just fine. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RX Gain Calibration
Travis I was in your same situation and understand what your experiencing. I got my KX3 first and was blown away by how quiet and sensitive it was. The KX3 was so impressive I sold my entire Ten-Ten station and built a K3. I was disappointed that the K3 receiver didn't seem to be as good as the KX3. I finally broke down and bought the XG3 signal generator and did all the calibrations. That has made the world of difference... but I still like the KX3 receiver more. I also read and implimented Don's Noisy K3 article. The K3 still doesn't seem as quiet and sensitive as the KX3. Let me know if you find the secret formula! I'm still working on it myself. I'm 100% satisfied with my K3 and LOVE it compared to the TT stuff. I just want to be 110% satisfied. Thanks Stan. I ordered a XG3 yesterday and I hope to have it here this week. I wasn't expecting such a huge discrepancy between the KX3 and K3, and it really surprised me. If I figure out the secret sauce, I'll definitely let you know. I am curious, with did you put the KX3 and K3 on the XG3 and see a discrepancy in the S-Meter reading? If so, how much? Don, here are the values for the Transmitter Signal Tracing. Results are shown for 40m (all okay except maybe MIX), and on the right are results for 20m, as measured on a 60 Mhz Tek oscilloscope. The signal at PRE and BF is not a clean sine wave, but shows a modulation... true for both 40 and 20. Is that normal? The PRE and BUF 20m signal appears to be double the 40m frequency. Re: [Elecraft] K1 signal traced
David, Note that all the RF voltage values at the buffer output and after are much lower on 20 meters than on 40 meters. That points the finger at the Buffer stage. Even though the MIX output is lower than expected, for right now, I would suggest you concentrate on the major difference in the BUF output between the 2 bands. The buffer is frequency sensitive - note that capacitor C16 in series with R11 makes the gain change with frequency. The gain should be higher on higher frequencies, and in your case it is not. So check the component values at C16, R11, and R12 as well as the soldering for those components (they determine the gain of U9). In addition, do DC voltage measurements at U9 pin 2 during both transmit and receive. If Q14 is doing its job, you should see a low voltage at pin 2 during receive and about 6 volts during transmit. Yes, those values indicate that the PreMixer crystal for 20 meters is probably OK (reserve judgement on that for later). 73, Don WFPR On 3/19/2013 7:46 PM, David L DuPuy wrote: Don, here are the values for the Transmitter Signal Tracing. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RX Gain Calibration
Travis, The real measure of any receiver in the ability to hear weak signals is not in the S-meter deflection. Within limits both the K3 and KX3 S-meters can be calibrated to read most anything you want to see. The measurement of actual sensitivity is in the MDS measurement. That indicates how weak a signal can be heard at 3 dB above the receiver noise floor. When you get your XG3, I encourage you to follow the instructions in the XG3 manual for determining the MDS of a receiver. With the XG3, that is a number inferred by the response at -107 dBm rather than a measurement using a well shielded signal generator and switching in attenuation, but the approximation should be within 1 dB of the actual MDS if you do the procedure (and math) as instructed. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/19/2013 7:26 PM, Travis Brown wrote: Thanks Stan. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RX Gain Calibration
Hi Don, I agree 100%! The S-Meter isn't as big of a concern to me as the fact that the noise floor seems to be so much more prevalent on the K3 than the KX3. I do understand that the more sensitive receiver will dip deeper into the noise floor and you will hear more of it. If I always have to turn down the RF gain though, and the S-Meter shows something even when their is no antenna attached, I think it is worth it to calibrate things. It's not like me to read manual, but so far, I have a pretty good track record of reading everything Elecraft sends me from cover to cover :) 73, Travis K2NP On Mar 19, 2013, at 8:12 PM, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Travis, The real measure of any receiver in the ability to hear weak signals is not in the S-meter deflection. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RX Gain Calibration
Travis, The S-meter should not indicate anything with the antenna disconnected. You should be searching for the reason the AGC is being activated on receiver noise - or it could be S-meter calibration. The XG3 can allow you to properly calibrate the S-meter - the Utility program will guide you. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/19/2013 8:34 PM, Travis Brown wrote: Hi Don, I agree 100%! Sometimes I truly believe that one of the worst plagues imposed on the Hams of the world was the S-Meter. In short, it means little about whether you can hear a signal or how easily it can be copied. True signal reports are given by what you hear, not what the meter says. 73 Ron AC7AC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
