At least, this is my experience from antenna modeling.

However, we have to live with the hands we're dealt. Without any field

Ignorance is bliss.

You forgot the Gain. Forexample you can loose 2 - 3 dB gain on an
antenna due to interaction with another antenna or object and see

no nothing on the SWR you measure down in the shack. Then you think
everything is fine a perfect, well maybe it´s good since what you don´t
know you don´t worry about.

[Elecraft] K3 + XV144

2013-07-06 Thread Rudi
Hello FM,

I had to reprogram my K3 after power failure when I was updating firmware.

I managed to reprogram all except the power of my XV-144 transverter.

The transverter output power is +- 10 watt but I cannot turn it down to
example 1 watt, in fact I cannot change the power setting.

Anyone know what is the problem, probably it's a menu setting thats not
correct, but I cannot find it.

All help welcome.

MENU CONFIG: XV1 PWR (or whatever XV number you have assigned)
- Change the XV number with a keypad key.
Set it to H 1.0 with VFO A knob.

I hope that helps.

[Elecraft] K3: Hi-Cut/Lo-Cut not available

2013-07-06 Thread KD7YZ Bob
Howdy K3' people:

I've searched the manual and pushed/held/tapped a lot of K3 buttons.

Somewhere in the recent past, I have lost ability to TAP Shift or
Width to get to be able to contorl Filter's Hi-Cut/ Low-Cut .

The green LED always remain on Shift and the other one on Width.

Holding either will only go to Norm or I/II .

[Elecraft] K3 S/N 7394 Weird Symptom

2013-07-06 Thread Brian F. Wruble
Hi all:

My K3 has been working flawlessly. It is part of a K3/KPA500/KAT500
lineup. I was monitoring FSK441 on 6M for several hours, no problems.

I turned it off for breakfast, came back and turned it on. The front panel
LCD fully lit, but with no characters on it, just blank. All front panel
buttons were unresponsive. I couldn't even turn it off without cutting 12V
and re-connecting.

I tried connecting to the configuration utility, but it wouldn't connect.

Then I discovered the 12V supply had disconnected from the KAT500. I
reconnected that, and the K3 came back to life.

I am completely mystified. This is repeatable. If I disconnect power to
the KAT500, the K3 loses front panel responsiveness, and just stays in
whatever state it was in when power was lost.

The KAT500 connects to the K3 using the special 15pin KPAK3AUX cable. When
I disconnect that, the problem goes away. Reconnect it, and the problem
recurs --- K3 frozen in whatever state it was in when the 12V power to the
KAT500 was disconnected.

Anybody know what is going on here?

2013-07-06 Thread Scott Manthe
This is a mailing list. The whole point of a mailing list is to forward
email responses to previous posts. So, in a way, it is designed to
clutter your inbox. You have options in the way the list sends
messages to you here:

http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft

But understand, this list is inherently different than a blog and the point of the list
is to disseminate information to participants. Thus, there is going to be significantly more
traffic than you're used to and inbox clutter is part of the bargain.

Re: [Elecraft] OT P3 video of RFI, ideas?

2013-07-06 Thread Steve

Bill
It took me a year to locate the noise source similar to yours. It is
worse on 80m and the frequency shifts as picture content changes. It
turned out to be next door. They had bought a 60 Samsung plasma. I took
a portable AM receiver over there, turned on their tv and it totally
blanked out the entire HF spectrum.
No amount of line cord filtering, torroids etc. does any good
whatsoever. The QRM radiates off the face of the plasma screen and can't
be tamed. The only cure is a new LCD tv!
My neighbor has not been helpful. They refuse to let a serviceman sent
by Samsung to look at it. I gave up 2 years ago and have managed to make
some antenna changes that help a little.

The below is a recording and includes sound of this nasty bit of pulsating RF.

Video recording:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/9214448105/

It is not always there. When it is there in the 20-meter band there are
siblings almost as strong at the following frequencies:

13.975

14.032-the recording

14.126

14.220

14.282

14.469

In addition, there are less strong signals that follow the pulsation; one is
visible on the recording at 14000 (far left on the P3). They are also in the 17
meter band. They are not in the 15 meter band or above.

I have pulled the big switch and it is still there on battery power. My
suspension is a neighbor with plasma television. Is this what plasma TV looks
like? It is directional in nature and the strongest signal comes from a
40-degree heading, roughly Europe from my location, or to a cluster of homes to
my northeast.

This is a mailing list. The whole point of a mailing list is to forward
email responses to previous posts. So, in a way, it is designed to
clutter your inbox. You have options in the way the list sends
messages to you here:

http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft

But understand, this list is inherently different than a blog and the point
of the list is to disseminate information to participants. Thus, there is going
to be significantly more traffic than you're used to and inbox clutter is
part of the bargain.

I note that each time somebody comments on a thread ( the recent ones on

My experience with blogs is all comments are retained on the server Under one
heading, and an email is sent daily to anybody interested in that subject
 upon request.
Hope something could be done about that.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Hi-Cut/Lo-Cut not available

2013-07-06 Thread Tom H Childers

It sounds like you may have the situation described below, from K3
Owner's Manual D10 Page 58.

SIG RMV [T] NOR (Advanced) OPTIONAL SPURIOUS SIGNAL REMOVAL: Can be
used to remove fast-tuning receiver “birdies” that are audible even
with an antenna connected. (An alternative in SSB mode is to turn on
auto-notch.) Limitations: Applies only to CW/SSB/DATA modes, and
 only to the main receiver.

* In CW and DATA modes, SIG RMV should not be used in
combination with a CONFIG:PB CTRL setting of Shif t=.01.*

PB CTRL Shift=.05 (Advanced) Specifies the granularity of the
passband SHIFT control on a per mode basis: .05 (default) or .01
kHz.
Select the desired mode first, then select the desired granularity.

*Limitations: Only applies to CW and DATA modes. Selecting .01
kHz reduces the SHIFT range and disables HI CUT and LO CUT.
May interfere with spurious signal removal (CONFIG:SIG RMV), i.e.
“removed” signals may not be shifted the right amount, and thus may
again be audible. *

Re: [Elecraft] OT P3 video of RFI, ideas?

2013-07-06 Thread Tom H Childers

That is a plasma TV near your home.

How do I know? My next door neighbor has one. He just moved in last
month and this week the noise started.

What can you do about it?

I went next door and asked him if he had a plasma TV and he answered
Yes, but I don't watch it except on Saturdays when my girl friend is
here.

I brought him to the shack and showed him the noise on my P3 SVGA
interface, them we went to his home and turned it off, after which we
returned to the shack and I showed him the signal was gone.

He now has a borrowed copy of the ARRL RFI Book and an explanation
from me of how to contact the Mfgr and ask them to fix it. I know
they can't, so I then told him to contact the FCC and report an FCC
Part 15 violation and give the name of the Mfgr (SamSung) when they
tell him sorry they can't fix it.

He was very nice about the whole thing and we now observes quiet time
except on Saturday night when I'm usually not on the air.

Fortunately he has a very large LED TV in the Den which makes no
noise.

On 7/5/2013 12:29 PM, Bill Hammond wrote:

This is a bit off topic but perhaps other P3 users on this reflector have
encountered this RFI and have some idea where it comes from and perhaps a
remedy? There must be a couple of thousand P3 users on this reflector.
The below is a recording and includes sound of this nasty bit of pulsating
 RF.

 Video recording:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/9214448105/

It is not always there. When it is there in the 20-meter band there are
siblings almost as strong at the following frequencies:

 13.975

 14.032-the recording

 14.126

 14.220

 14.282

 14.469

In addition, there are less strong signals that follow the pulsation; one is
visible on the recording at 14000 (far left on the P3). They are also in the
17 meter band. They are not in the 15 meter band or above.

I have pulled the big switch and it is still there on battery power. My
suspension is a neighbor with plasma television. Is this what plasma TV
looks like? It is directional in nature and the strongest signal comes from
a 40-degree heading, roughly Europe from my location, or to a cluster of
 homes to my northeast.

Or people old enough to have been doing RTTY using mechanical teletype units.
Besides Carriage Return (CR) we had Line Feed (LF). Of course on a typewriter
carriage return gave you a line feed for free.

All these computer people seem to call it new line.

Some people miss AM. I miss the pictures we used to do with CR and no LF to
get overprints.

[Elecraft] FT-100 Knob to K2

2013-07-06 Thread Steve
When I purchased my first K2 in 2001, I ordered a FT-100 main tuning knob
from Yaesu to replace the original one from Elecraft. That rig is long
gone and I recently purchased a K2/100 that has the Elecraft knob with a
finger dimple. It's not bad, but I am wondering if anyone has one of those
FT-100 knobs they don't need and would like to sell. Since the FT-100 is
out of production, they don't have any. I know there are other
possibilities, but those heavy brass knobs just don't entice me.

Please reply direct.

...or an old guy. The Model 19 TTY had a CR key, and a separate LF key, if my
memory is correct. That is what most of us used for RTTY before computers.
Smelly, noisy, but they worked.

The key was a CR key well before it was an ENTER key.

I remember 30 years ago when word processing programs were becoming available
with word wrap many experienced typists had trouble getting their minds around
that you didn't have to hit Enter (the equivalent of running the carriage back)
at the end of each line. That formatting could be done later was tough to

Yes, but I don't watch it except on Saturdays when my girl friend is

I brought him to the shack and showed him the noise on my P3 SVGA

He now has a borrowed copy of the ARRL RFI Book and an explanation

they can't, so I then told him to contact the FCC and report an FCC

In addition, there are less strong signals that follow the pulsation; one
is visible on the recording at 14000 (far left on the P3). They are also in
the 17 meter band. They are not in the 15 meter band or above.

I have pulled the big switch and it is still there on battery power. My
suspension is a neighbor with plasma television. Is this what plasma TV
looks like? It is directional in nature and the strongest signal comes
from a 40-degree heading, roughly Europe from my location, or to a cluster
 of homes to my northeast.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - anyone have experience with effects of metalroofs on antenna performace?

2013-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm

My suggestions for handling email from any email reflector or Yahoo group:

Sign up for individual emails - BUT - set a filter in your email client
to move all emails containing [Elecraft] in the subject into a
separate folder in your inbox (I call mine Elecraft).
That effectively creates your own personal digest, with the advantage
that you can reply to any individual email (Note that with this list,
just Reply goes only to the sender. If your email client does not
have a Reply to List, you must Reply All and edit out the sender's
address if you want it to only be sent to the list).

Just my suggestion for handling email from any list or Yahoo group.
Some email clients will show you the posts in threaded fashion if you
like that better (Thunderbird does that), but I prefer to list the
emails in date/time received and if I want to see threaded posts, I look
on Nabble (but I don't ever post or reply from Nabble)

As a separate request for those who do reply using Nabble, please
include a bit of the relevant thing you are responding to in the body of
your post. Often the subject line no longer has anything to do with
what is being referred to (such as this post)

Re: [Elecraft] OT P3 video of RFI, ideas?

2013-07-06 Thread Don Allen
Although this thread is quite mature, I will add my experience with
plasma TVs, one of which is a Pioneer Elite. Both of my next door
neighbors have plasmas - one a Panasonic and the other the Pioneer.
DXing used to be my favorite aspect of ham radio, and 40m my favorite
band, but since the neighbors' acquisition of the plasma TVs, the plasma
noise/spurs can be a constant S8 to S9. To say it's frustrating,
especially when I've always tried to be a good neighbor in terms of my
ham radio operations, is an understatement. Plasma TVs are equivalent
to thousands of spark gap transmitters!

Until recently, I only operated either very late at night or early AM,
or when the neighbors weren't home, or if by chance, weren't watching
TV. However, a few months ago I purchased a Pixel Technologies
RF-Pro-1B magnetic receiving loop which has helped immensely. The
plasma noise is now typically an S4 or S5, sometimes even a bit lower
when I carefully adjust the azimuth of the the loop with the rotor.
It's also helped with the persistent line noise problem that the power
utility is totally unresponsive to address. I essentially use the
receive antenna input on my rigs 100% of the time now.

I wish the FCC would ban the sales and marketing of plasma TVs!

[Elecraft] [K3] 700 Hz 8-Pole Filters - We Are Now Accepting Formal (Paid) Orders

2013-07-06 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Ken and I will be accepting formal (paid) orders towards the next
production run of 700 Hz filters through 1600 UTC on Wednesday July 10th.
At that time we will commission production of batch four, and begin a
waiting list towards batch five.

See http://www.unpcbs.com/frontdoor/

Since we have promised not commission another batch as long as anyone has
a filter they want to sell ... please contact me (off list) ASAP if you
have a 700 Hz filter surplus to your needs, and I will put you in contact
with the next person on our list.

--- - - - ---

If you are wondering what's so special about 700 Hz, then you might want
to check out our newest webpage, which features a slideshow that presents
a novel visual comparison of the five 8-pole CW filters. It uses an
analogy that likens bandwidth to the focal length of a camera lens, or
more specifically, to the resulting angular field of view for a given
focal length.

You may find that comparing the resulting images, is much more intuitive
than comparing a table of numbers (i.e. minus 6 dB bandwidths), or
comparing passband roll-off plots.

Re: [Elecraft] FT-100 Knob to K2

I recently bought the 73CNC steel knob for the K2. I still can't believe
I spent $90 for a freakin' radio knob! But I love it, and would do it
again. Totally transformed the feel of that little radio.

Just for fun, I tried it on my K1, but it's too heavy for the wobbly
encoder used in that radio. You can hear it scrapping inside as it
turns. So the old stock K2 knob went on the K1 and transformed that (my
favorite) little radio as well. It needs a slightly bigger knob and the
K2 knob is just right.

I have a neighbor who has a plasma. But what is worse I have a neighbor two
doors down whose outside lights cause 30-40 db of noise from 7MHz to 20 MHz! I
offered to change them for him, and asked him to at least just turn them on at
night. He has a timer, but he leaves them on many times all day. His wife was
great, if they were on I'd ring the bell and ask her to turn them off...no
problem. The one time he answered the door, he started yelling at me calling
every name under the sun, and called the cops. Cops looked at my station (one
was a cb-er) and said there was not much they could do.I solved the issue by
buying an active antenna and a ncc antenna phaser. Here is what it can do!

http://va2fsq.com/wp-content/uploads/2013-Jan-15-20-43-43.avi

Copy the link and paste it in windows media player (File - Open network
location).

Problem solved. Too bad it doesn't work remotely.

2013-07-06 Thread Mark Petiford
Re:  But what really baffles me is that I  can not get it out of CAPS and I've
been accused or shouting and just being rude.

That shows you that the folks who complain the most usually know the least!

Long time ago...going from memory here:

No small letters were available.  Up through the Model 19, everything used
Baudot code which only had caps.  RTTY was the same way in those days.

Figures key put the TX and RX TTY's into Figures mode (numbers, punctuation,
etc.), LTR key put them into letters mode. Figures and letters key was always
sent twice just in case the first one didn't decode properly...or at least the
letters key was.  That way you didn't leave the other guy in the opposite mode.
Nothing worse than being in figures when the other guy was sending letters!
ASCII came later with Caps and small letters, and no FGS or LTR keys.  Model 23
sent ascii.  I don't think it was compatible with our earlier TTY's.  I never
had a model 23.  Went straight to rudimentary computer code/decode instead.
Converted my homebrew terminal so it could talk to my computer (expanded Cosmac
Elf with tiny display and keyboard...google it...wish I still had it).  Nothing
like today, though.  I THINK that gave me the option to use ASCII, but can't
remember for sure.

[Elecraft] KX3 Setup For Contesting (Thanks for all the help!)

2013-07-06 Thread Aaron Melton
All,

I received a nearly-overwhelming amount of responses to my email and I
wanted to make sure I follow-up with you all to thank you and let you
know the results of operating in my first contest QRP with the KX3.

Although I failed to mention it in my original email, many of you
correctly assumed that I would be operating SSB. I'm still not
proficient (and comfortable) enough with CW to go that route yet. Of
course, digital is just point-and-click. :)

Many suggested using a high quality (or high gain) antenna. I don't
know if you'd call what I'm using high quality, but it's what I've got
and it seems to get the job done well enough. You can see my QRZ
profile for more information about it. (It's approximately 250' of wire
in a loop above my house.)

It seemed split right down the middle on whether to use QRP in my call
or not. Ultimately, I decided to go with it: KK4LOV QRP. I heard
several other stations announce themselves as QRP or portable. We can
debate if it's right or wrong, but when heard, they ALWAYS received
preference from the station calling CQ contest.

Speaking of being heard, I avoided most pileups where the station
calling CQ even had difficulty keeping up with all the calls. In the
few instances where I did throw my call in the pile, I paused at least a
second before stating my call. I suspect the other station rarely heard
my actual call but frequently heard QRP unless my signal was being
drowned out by a QRO station.

As far as the KX3 setup was concerned, I received two bits of advice
which really seemed to help.
1. It was suggested I crank the speech compression ALL the way up. I
had it on 10 (I think) and maxed it out at 30.
2. Adjusted my TX EQ settings: TXEQ1-16, TXEQ2-16, TXEQ3-8, TXEQ8-16.

All this and a lot of patience got me a clean sweep on the 13 Colonies
contest running this week -- all on 5 watts SSB. So thanks to everyone
for your help -- I'm sure this will improve my SOTA operations as well!

Remeber the report in QST about the person who had a well pump

Perhaps complaints of RFI to the FCC can do some good (but it will take

2013-07-06 Thread Tom
Hi
I am using a dxengineering active receive antenna with a 102 whip, mounted at
ground level about 30 feet away from my av620 vertical. I'm using is as a noise
antenna while the av620 is my main antenna.
Waiting until the weather cools off to install my first beam. Should be less
noisy than the vertical.

I'm curious what you are using for an active antenna, and wonder if you
are using the active antenna as the noise-sense antenna and working the
NCC-1 against your transmitting antenna, or are you using multiple active

DXing used to be my favorite aspect of ham radio, and 40m my favorite

 noise/spurs can be a constant S8 to S9. To say it's frustrating,
especially when I've always tried to be a good neighbor in terms of my
ham radio operations, is an understatement. Plasma TVs are equivalent to
 thousands of spark gap transmitters!

Until recently, I only operated either very late at night or early AM,
or when the neighbors weren't home, or if by chance, weren't watching
TV. However, a few months ago I purchased a Pixel Technologies RF-Pro-1B
magnetic receiving loop which has helped immensely. The plasma noise is
now typically an S4 or S5, sometimes even a bit lower when I carefully
adjust the azimuth of the the loop with the rotor. It's also helped with
the persistent line noise problem that the power utility is totally
unresponsive to address. I essentially use the receive antenna input on
my rigs 100% of the time now.

I wish the FCC would ban the sales and marketing of plasma TVs!

As an aside, the filters need alignment.

Congratulations on a your first contest and the results. Keep at it and you'll
discover that you can do quite a creditable job QRP as compared to many QRO

We did a QRP Field Day last year and took a second place in our category and
our score beat out many QRO competitors. We've been at it for a few years. So,
you should be able to replicate our results with on the air practice. Chasing

Re: [Elecraft] K2 power and receive strength low on 17m only

2013-07-06 Thread Don Wilhelm

Robin,

I saw your email to me a few days ago, but was not able to respond
because you sent it from Nabble and it did not put your email address in
the TO: field - instead it substituted the nabble address and I am not
subscribed there.

I strongly believe you have a problem in the bandpass filter - C32, C34
or relay K6.

Examine the case of K6 first. If it has any 'soldering iron scars',
replace it.

If K6 is OK, then try setting the power at 1.5 watts and doing a TUNE
with the K2 set to 18100 kHz. Adjust C32 and C34 for the maximum power
output.

If that does not cure your problem, then ask again (but not through Nabble).

Don W3FPR

That shows you that the folks who complain the most usually know the least!

Long time ago...going from memory here:

No small letters were available.  Up through the Model 19, everything used
Baudot code which only had caps.  RTTY was the same way in those days.

Figures key put the TX and RX TTY's into Figures mode (numbers, punctuation,
etc.), LTR key put them into letters mode. Figures and letters key was
always sent twice just in case the first one didn't decode properly...or at
least the letters key was.  That way you didn't leave the other guy in the
opposite mode.  Nothing worse than being in figures when the other guy was
sending letters!  ASCII came later with Caps and small letters, and no FGS
or LTR keys.  Model 23 sent ascii.  I don't think it was compatible with our
earlier TTY's.  I never had a model 23.  Went straight to rudimentary
computer code/decode instead.  Converted my homebrew terminal so it could
talk to my computer (expanded Cosmac Elf with tiny display and
keyboard...google it...wish I still had it).  Nothing like today, though.  I
THINK that gave me the option to use ASCII, but can't remember for sure.

[Elecraft] FW 4.67 and K3EXREF

2013-07-06 Thread Stan Gibbs
I just realized that both my K3's running FW 4.67 are no longer locking to
the K3EXREF calibration signal from a Trimble Thunderbolt. Specifically, the
REF CAL config menu item does not show the flashing asterisk and moving
the main tuning knob does not show LOCKED. I have had the K3EXREF
installed and operating properly with both rigs for at least a year.

The Trimble Thunderbolt provides the 10MHz calibration signal to both K3's
though a MiniCircuits splitter. After checking the power supply and output
levels of the Thunderbolt, which were nominal, I decided to see if the K3
firmware could be responsible, since I had fairly recently upgraded to 4.67.
Indeed, rolling back to 4.51 re-enables the normal REF CAL behavior!

Can anyone else verify this?
