Re: [Elecraft] KX3 S meter calibration
We are waiting for the S meter absolute mode to be incorporated into the firmware as it is in the K3, then the meter will correctly read the signal at the antenna socket irrespective of preamp or attenuator settings. I agree that the current situation is somewhat odd, maybe there's a good reason for the delay in its implementation, but I would like this feature enabled as soon as possible. One of the joys of the KX3 (and K3) is the fact that the S meter is so accurate! 73 Stephen G4SJP On 3 October 2013 01:01, robertsm...@vom.com robertsm...@vom.com wrote: I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't find any information about it. In measuring the calibration of the S-meter in my KX3, I discovered it is extremely accurate, but only with the pre-amp engaged. With it engaged, S9 is indicated at exactly 50 uV (within the resolution of the display). It is also very accurate up and down the S-meter range, with 6dB corresponding exactly to an S unit. I would have expected it to be calibrated with both the pre-amp and attenuator disengaged. Is there some reason it's calibrated this way? Also, when the firuware is available that automatically accounts for engaging the pre-amp or attenuator, will the indication be referenced to the pre-amp on or off? Re: [Elecraft] Pauli Nunez, EA3BLQ K2DI v.III and K2DI-PCI boards
Robin, Unfortunately, Pauli EA3BLQ is SK and as far as I know, no boards are available. For the fixed audio out, you may want to look at my website www.w3fpr.com. I have no fixed audio out boards available, but the circuit is easy enough to build on perfboard. If the resistors and capacitors are laid flat, you can mount it between the Control Board and Front Panel and use an unused pin on the mic connector for the audio output. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/3/2013 12:45 AM, Robin Bayer wrote: K2 enthusiasts, I'm looking for a self-contained system for fixed audio, mike header extender and sound card and really like the looks of Pauli Nunez, EA3BLQ's K2DI v.III and K2DI-PCI boards. I am resenting this, as the original has not appeared.br/br/I am also awaiting delivery, I expect the usual nonsense with Parcelforce who handle the UK delivery, where they pay any duties and VAT and then send a letter to me asking for payment of those charges and their handing fee on top of that, before they arrange to deliver the item to me. This happened recently to me when I ordered a used xtal filter from the US and I had to pay about £34 before I got the item. It is the extra delay that especially annoys me, in this day and age to write a letter and post it to me to tell me what the charges are is ridiculous.br/br/Oddly when I order from the East, the item just drops through my letterbox. [Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.....emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment?
I hope its ok for me to post an OFF-TOPIC query. Here is my question: Recently I was forwarded an email.a ham offering to sell a slightly used KX3. I had a bad experience this summer with someone who I believe was posing as a ham offering to sell something via email. It was in response to a want-add I had posted on Eham-swap looking for parts. I received an email a supposed ham wanted to sell me an item he claimed was almost brand new. I said thank you anywayI'm specifically looking for parts. He emailed me 2 more times trying to get me to buy. I thanked him and repeated, I was only looking for parts. He then emailed me saying he had another unit he would sell as parts. I asked him for pictures. I never heard from him again. He was using a legitimate ham call-sign. I believe if someone on this list were selling a used KX3, it would be legit. But other forums I suspect are subject to scammers. Is there any way one can inspect an item at delivery before providing payment? 1) See if QRZ address matches the address he gives 2) Google search him to see if anyone complained on a list or elsewhere. Also see if he ever posts to ham reflectors and what that history is. 3) Does he have a land-line phone nr that can be verified against his address on the internet phone book? 4) Use USPS money order for payment. Re: [Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.....emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment?
Just a couple elaborations on these fine points. 1) QRZ email address is not always a sure fire protection against fraudulent posts. I had one gentleman I was going to purchase from who was unaware that his QRZ email was hacked. Get a phone number and references from another ham in his/her area if it is a big dollar purchase. 2) definitely communicate on the phone about the deal. Get additional pictures of the equipment. Trust your gut. If it feels wrong it probably is wrong. 3) I use Paypal and I realize it is expensive but I like the protections it provides. Cashiers checks is also something I have used with the name of the ham operator selling the equipment based on callsign on qrz or FCC database. Just another couple elaborations on already posted good suggestions. Good luck! Re: [Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.....emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment?
Be careful trusting what you see on QRZ. There is a recent trend where an unsuspecting victim clicks on a link to view whatever a scammer is offering via email. That link leads to a QRZ.COM fake web page where the victim is asked to log in. After providing name and password, the victim is then directed to the real QRZ.COM. The scammer now has the login information he needs to get on QRZ and change the email address to something he controls. You would also not be surprised how many hams use the same password on multiple sites. They change other accounts as well and then scam ads are posted under legitimate user accounts. A lot of us site managers have gotten together and share information so these scammers are shut down fast but they still sneak through. 73 de na6m -Original Message- From: Jerry Flanders jefland...@comcast.net To: dw bw...@fastmail.fm Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Date: Thu, 03 Oct 2013 10:38:18 -0400 Subject: Re: [Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment? 1) See if QRZ address matches the address he gives 2) Google search him to see if anyone complained on a list or elsewhere. OK, I have reluctantly added my yahoo mail account to the iPad mail client as a work around for sending plain text to the list. The reason I was using the yahoo mail client was that it is easy or at least possible to use filters and folders in it to organise the mail. I like to keep my email lists, yahoo groups etc separate from my main email for personal and business which use a different account and mail client. Anyway, let's see if this is any better. David, Great that you have the KX3 enroute! Dealing with authorities and beauracy's always vexing, it seems. Re: [Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.....emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment?
To be clear concerning the QRZ address check:: QRZ.com can give the official FCC contact postal address. This can also be had on the FCC website. I recommend comparing that postal address to the postal address he gives for sending the USPS money order. I would NOT like a po box nr for this, and no address changes, either. And using USPS Money orders gives a sort of fraud protection for both the buyer and seller. Read USPS website. Looks like you can even check the validity of the MO there. Jerry W4UK At 11:37 AM 10/3/2013, Mark Stennett wrote: Be careful trusting what you see on QRZ. Don's little audio board is perfect. I use one in my K2 for all digital modes. Builds in about 30 minutes from parts you can get anywhere including Radio Shack. I have never used this but am running Ham Radio Deluxe, which I am familiar with, but would also like to run the Elecraft terminal.. Re: [Elecraft] K3 dual connections
Chris, No, it cannot be done that way - an RS-232 port cannot have multiple drivers - that Y cable is to connect a port that only listens on the bus - its drivers must be disabled - like the SteppIR controller. If you want 2 applications to talk with the K3, you must use a virtual port application such as LP-Pan - see www.telepostinc.com. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/3/2013 1:42 PM, Chris Pickett wrote: Hi Guys, Can someone please advise me on the following. [Elecraft] P3 question
I have had a P3 for some time but only very recently did I build it and install it, and only now am I trying to learn it. The first problem encountered is as follows. I tried QSYing the K3 to a marker frequency, but no QSY occurs when either marker is selected and the Select knob is tapped. Yes, there is an RS232 connection between the K3 and P3. The RS232 line also connects in parallel to a MicroHam router, and a SteppIR SDA100 controller through Y splitter cables. So I asked myself Are these additional breakouts preventing QSY to the marker frequency? To answer, I disconnected the MicroHam and SteppIR controller, with no difference. Am I missing something here? Is there an enabling configuration selection in the K3? Re: [Elecraft] Fun with CM 500 headset
Tom : I also recently picked up a Yamaha CM500 for use with my Flex-1500. I still have to build an adaptor cable for the Mic, but I have been using it just as headphones for now. I really like the sound, and they are very well made. Overall a very good purchase at $US60. Michael VE3WMB P.S. I am interested in what you find out, as I may also decide to make an adaptor cable to use them with my K2 as well. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I really didn't think you were in Ireland Tom, but you gave no hint of where you were when you sent the message, Hi! 73 Ron AC7AC From: Tom [mailto:tom...@videotron.ca] Sent: Thursday, October 03, 2013 4:15 PM To: Ron D'Eau Claire; 'Elecraft Mailing list' Subject: RE: [Elecraft] First QSO with my KX3 No! You were not actually IN Ireland? There is something special about making a first QSO with a new rig. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- I'm away a couple of days and brought my new KX3. Put up20 feet of wire in a tree 8 feet high and had a QSO with Ireland, second call. Re: [Elecraft] P3 question
The RS232 line also connects in parallel to a MicroHam router, and a SteppIR SDA100 controller through Y splitter cables. microHAM interfaces should *never* be connected to K3/P3 through a Y cable. The proper connection is the DB9 (marked CAT) lead of the microHAM cable set should connect to the P3 PC jack and the P3 XCVR jack should be connected to the K3 RS-232 jack using the Elecraft supplied cable. As with any other RS-232 device, the microHAM - P3 connection can not withstand the load of a second receiver or inactive transmitter. Connecting two TxD sources to any RS-232 device will result in improper operation (no data). 73, ...
