Re: [Elecraft] KX3 S meter calibration

2013-10-03 Thread Stephen Prior
We are waiting for the S meter absolute mode to be incorporated into the
firmware as it is in the K3, then the meter will correctly read the signal
at the antenna socket irrespective of preamp or attenuator settings. I
agree that the current situation is somewhat odd, maybe there's a good
reason for the delay in its implementation, but I would like this feature
enabled as soon as possible. One of the joys of the KX3 (and K3) is the
fact that the S meter is so accurate!

In measuring the calibration of the S-meter in my KX3, I discovered it is
 extremely
accurate, but only with the pre-amp engaged. With it engaged, S9 is
 indicated at
exactly 50 uV (within the resolution of the display). It is also very
 accurate up
and down the S-meter range, with 6dB corresponding exactly to an S unit.

I would have expected it to be calibrated with both the pre-amp and
 attenuator
disengaged. Is there some reason it's calibrated this way?

Also, when the firuware is available that automatically accounts for
 engaging the
pre-amp or attenuator, will the indication be referenced to the pre-amp on
 or off?

[Elecraft] P3 updating problem

2013-10-03 Thread Alan Grant
Hi all

Its Alan Grant again, still have problems with my P3, I read all the
suggestions and changed the cable/s and have found that I can get it to
talk to the K3 and down load to

the MCU and won't find the P3 past that point, the P3 at least is working,
but the saga does not seem to be found, I'm wondering if the SVGA board is
crook ???

What do I do now

At least it is working as before the SVGA upgrade

Thanks for the help to date

Excellent product! I am about to order my set.

Just a nitpick -
This group is full of people (including me) spoilt by excellent pictures +
detailed instructions for any kind of Elecraft related (dis)assembly.
Although very simple, I saw one page install instructions on the Side KX

Re: [Elecraft] Pauli Nunez, EA3BLQ K2DI v.III and K2DI-PCI boards

2013-10-03 Thread Don Wilhelm

Robin,

Unfortunately, Pauli EA3BLQ is SK and as far as I know, no boards are
available.

For the fixed audio out, you may want to look at my website
www.w3fpr.com. I have no fixed audio out boards available, but the
circuit is easy enough to build on perfboard. If the resistors and
capacitors are laid flat, you can mount it between the Control Board and
Front Panel and use an unused pin on the mic connector for the audio output.

Has anyone had any experience using this set-up,

2013-10-03 Thread David Anderson
I am resenting this, as the original has not appeared.br/br/I am also
awaiting delivery, I expect the usual nonsense with Parcelforce who handle the
UK delivery, where they pay any duties and VAT and then send a letter to me
asking for payment of those charges and their handing fee on top of that,
before they arrange to deliver the item to me. This happened recently to me
when I ordered a used xtal filter from the US and I had to pay about £34 before
I got the item. It is the extra delay that especially annoys me, in this day
and age to write a letter and post it to me to tell me what the charges are is
ridiculous.br/br/Oddly when I order from the East, the item just drops
through my letterbox. I ordered an FG01 antenna analyser on Saturday evening
and it was on my doorstep on Tuesday morning - all the way from
China.br/br/Still waiting patiently for my KX3 which I ordered from our
local and only ham store in GM last week, latest is that it
will be here tomorrow. The big show down South has delayed things apparently.
I could have ordered it directly from the USA saving a few hundred quid, but I
couldn't be bothered dealing with Parcelforce, besides I get a 2 year warranty
from the UK supplier. br/br/73br/br/David Anderson

[Elecraft] R: R: R: KX3 TX inhibit ?

Right Mark, I shall just have used the opposite logic:

Setting HI=Inh in the ACC2 IO Menu de facto disables TX (TX blinking); so
this is the perfect solution with no need for external HW.

The kx3 is different from the k3 in that the input is normally hi. If set

Marco,
I had the idea of using some CAT-command to do so, but couldn't find a
specific one in the manual.
There is, of course RX; and PCxx;, which would have to be sent
frequently. The VOX state command is commented as GET only, SET is
planned.

In Win-Test, for example, you could assign a script to all Fx- keys, the
script looks like
 wtRadio:Send(RX;)
 wtRadio:Send(PC000;)
 return -1

Happy contesting!

Hello David and welcome to the list.

As you can see your text is filled with HTML content.

Be it known that HTML is stripped from messages sent to the list.

Sometimes even completely blank messages will arrive having only a
subject but no body.

In that case a mail client is used that creates HTML only messages by
default.

So the bottom line is; Do not use HTML but plain text in your messages
to the list.

And: No attachments too! But you can send a link to a website...:-)

Good luck with your KX3 and best 72/73,

My KX3 Reads correct on 20 meters with the preamp on. 40 and 80 meters show
S2 instead of S3 and S8 instead of S9.

I hope the new firmware will allow calibration as well, since mine is off a
bit.

[Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.....emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment?

2013-10-03 Thread dw
I hope its ok for me to post an OFF-TOPIC query.
Here is my question:
Recently I was forwarded an email.a ham offering to sell a slightly
used KX3.

I had a bad experience this summer with someone who I believe was posing
as a ham offering to sell something via email.
It was in response to a want-add I had posted on Eham-swap looking for
parts.

I received an email a supposed ham wanted to sell me an item he claimed
was almost brand new.
I said thank you anywayI'm specifically looking for parts.
He emailed me 2 more times trying to get me to buy.
I thanked him and repeated, I was only looking for parts.
He then emailed me saying he had another unit he would sell as parts.
I asked him for pictures.
I never heard from him again.
He was using a legitimate ham call-sign.

I believe if someone on this list were selling a used KX3, it would be
legit.
But other forums I suspect are subject to scammers.
Is there any way one can inspect an item at delivery before providing
payment?
C.O.D is kind of like that, but not quite.

1) See if QRZ address matches the address he gives

2) Google search him to see if anyone complained on a list or
elsewhere. Also see if he ever posts to ham reflectors and what that
history is.

3) Does he have a land-line phone nr that can be verified against his
address on the internet phone book?

4) Use USPS money order for payment. Supposed to give protection
against fraud (possibly get the federal postal inspectors on your
side) . This helps both sides, actually.

If at least 3 of the above are OK, he probably is also.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.....emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment?

2013-10-03 Thread Keith Heimbold
Just a couple elaborations on these fine points.

1) QRZ email address is not always a sure fire protection against fraudulent
posts. I had one gentleman I was going to purchase from who was unaware that
his QRZ email was hacked. Get a phone number and references from another ham in
his/her area if it is a big dollar purchase.

2) definitely communicate on the phone about the deal. Get additional pictures
of the equipment. Trust your gut. If it feels wrong it probably is wrong.

3) I use Paypal and I realize it is expensive but I like the protections it
provides. Cashiers checks is also something I have used with the name of the
ham operator selling the equipment based on callsign on qrz or FCC database.

Just another couple elaborations on already posted good suggestions.

Good luck!

2013-10-03 Thread Lewis Phelps
One more suggestion:

ask for photocopy of a sales receipt, or an invoice, showing that he purchased
the item from a legitimate source (e.g. an Elecraft invoice).

I recently answered a Craigslist listing for an iMac. Price seemed too good to
be true. It was. I smoked out the fraud by asking for sales receipts. Seller
suddenly went into radio silence.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.....emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment?

2013-10-03 Thread Mark Stennett
Be careful trusting what you see on QRZ. There is a recent trend where an
unsuspecting victim clicks on a link to view whatever a scammer is offering
via email. That link leads to a QRZ.COM fake web page where the victim is
asked to log in. After providing name and password, the victim is then
directed to the real QRZ.COM.

The scammer now has the login information he needs to get on QRZ and change
the email address to something he controls. You would also not be surprised
how many hams use the same password on multiple sites. They change other
accounts as well and then scam ads are posted under legitimate user
accounts. A lot of us site managers have gotten together and share
information so these scammers are shut down fast but they still sneak
through.

If at least 3 of the above are OK, he probably is also.

OK, I have reluctantly added my yahoo mail account to the iPad mail client as a
work around for sending plain text to the list. The reason I was using the
yahoo mail client was that it is easy or at least possible to use filters and
folders in it to organise the mail. I like to keep my email lists, yahoo groups
etc separate from my main email for personal and business which use a different
account and mail client. Anyway, let's see if this is any better. Sorry for the

David,

Great that you have the KX3 enroute! Dealing with authorities and

$388 and $199 shipping. US Postal Priority Mail was only $80, but
they had to hand deliver it to the PO, for which they charged me
$199. The actuator is working nicely, but glad I will not have to do
regular business with this firm.

popular mw IF. The current de facto standard IF radio for mw is the

Re: [Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.....emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment?

2013-10-03 Thread Jerry Flanders

To be clear concerning the QRZ address check::

QRZ.com can give the official FCC contact postal address. This can
also be had on the FCC website. I recommend comparing that postal
address to the postal address he gives for sending the USPS money
order. I would NOT like a po box nr for this, and no address changes, either.

And using USPS Money orders gives a sort of fraud protection for both
the buyer and seller. Read USPS website. Looks like you can even
check the validity of the MO there.

Don's little audio board is perfect. I use one in my K2 for all digital

[Elecraft] K3 dual connections

2013-10-03 Thread Chris Pickett
Hi Guys,

Can someone please advise me on the following.

When I ordered my K line, Elecraft supplied with a two way D Sub splitter
cable.

I have never used this but am running Ham Radio Deluxe, which I am familiar
with, but would also like to run the Elecraft terminal..

It would appear, of course, that the Radio cannot accept protocols from the
PC via a single cable from more that one programme but I am wondering if I
create a second Com Port and use an additional adapter that I might be able
to get the K3 to 'talk' to the two programmes in unison.

I am not a computer guru kind of guy but would welcome any advice anyone
might be able to offer me please.

Chris,

No, it cannot be done that way - an RS-232 port cannot have multiple
drivers - that Y cable is to connect a port that only listens on the bus
- its drivers must be disabled - like the SteppIR controller.

If you want 2 applications to talk with the K3, you must use a virtual
port application such as LP-Pan - see www.telepostinc.com.

I just got this error message for the first time on my K3 after a normal tune
up on 20M. Now I have no use of the KPA3 and the the LPA I running at 75° C!
Not good. I also received the message telling me to check the circuit breaker.
The three FETs on the LPA are 6 months old and mounded with the correct heat
dissipating washers.

I had been using the radio earlier in the day and operation was perfectly normal

Any guidance?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KX3

2013-10-03 Thread David Anderson
Ed,

Yes I do look forward to the 2m module for the KX3. At least I will have some
time to play around with the radio on shortwave before then, once I get some
antennas that is. I have been QRT for a number of years and this is me getting
started again.

Hope my email is in plain enough text for the reflector now, have moved over to
another mail client on the iPad.

Great that you have the KX3 enroute! Dealing with authorities and beauracy's
always vexing, it seems. I recently experienced this with a company when
ordering a replacement actuator for my dish. It cost $388 and $199 shipping.
US Postal Priority Mail was only $80, but they had to hand deliver it to the
PO, for which they charged me $199. The actuator is working nicely, but glad
I will not have to do regular business with this firm.

Dave is another microwaver who is trying out the KX3 as new IF for mw work.
He and I both waiting for the 2M module which is the most popular mw IF. The
current de facto standard IF radio for mw is the FT-817. I wrote an article
for the MUD conference last year showing the application of the KX3-2M as the
new best IF radio. Time will tell.

[Elecraft] PSK Split?

2013-10-03 Thread Jim Miller
Just worked TX5D PSK31 on 12m using the built-in encoder/decoder of the K3.
It would have been really nice to have split available for this purpose. I
have the second receiver.

Toggling back and forth between the A/B vfos is pretty clumsy.

Why no split on PSK-D?

[Elecraft] P3 question

2013-10-03 Thread Garry Shapiro

I have had a P3 for some time but only very recently did I build it and
install it, and only now am I trying to learn it.

The first problem encountered is as follows. I tried QSYing the K3 to a marker
frequency, but no QSY occurs when either marker is selected and the
Select knob is tapped. Yes, there is an RS232 connection between the K3
and P3. The RS232 line also connects in parallel to a MicroHam router,
and a SteppIR SDA100 controller through Y splitter cables. So I asked
myself Are these additional breakouts preventing QSY to the marker
frequency? To answer, I disconnected the MicroHam and SteppIR
controller, with no difference.

Am I missing something here? Is there an enabling configuration
selection in the K3?

Re: [Elecraft] ERP

2013-10-03 Thread WILLIS COOKE
The ERP calculation was, I think in error, but it was for 600 meters, not 60
meters and the ERP from a reasonable antenna is much less for 600 meters than
for 60 meters.

I was sorry to see the discussion about ERP calculations end...using the
formulas presented on here, I was preparing to run at least 1-KW into my
antenna in order to achieve the 100-watt ERP 60-meter power limit.

Tom :

I also recently picked up a Yamaha CM500 for use with my Flex-1500.
I still have to build an adaptor cable for the Mic, but I have been using it
just as headphones for now. I really like the sound, and they are very well
made.

Overall a very good purchase at $US60.

P.S. I am interested in what you find out, as I may also decide to make an
adaptor cable
to use them with my K2 as well.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 question

2013-10-03 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

The RS232 line also connects in parallel to a MicroHam router,
and a SteppIR SDA100 controller through Y splitter cables.

microHAM interfaces should *never* be connected to K3/P3 through
a Y cable. The proper connection is the DB9 (marked CAT)
lead of the microHAM cable set should connect to the P3 PC
jack and the P3 XCVR jack should be connected to the K3 RS-232
jack using the Elecraft supplied cable.

As with any other RS-232 device, the microHAM - P3 connection
can not withstand the load of a second receiver or inactive
transmitter. Connecting two TxD sources to any RS-232 device
will result in improper operation (no data).
