[Elecraft] Odd K3 Behavior
My six year old K3 (#217) has been behaving oddly the past few weeks. The NB button sometimes doesn't work at all, either short press or press-and-hold, and sometimes when I press and hold it to bring up the LEVEL settings it behaves as though I'm pressing SPEED/MIC knob -- i.e., the display will toggle between CW speed and Mic level. Also, the left side of the BAND and MODE buttons sometimes do nothing when pressed; the right side of these same buttons continue to work. There may be other similar problems with other buttons, I can't remember. These are the two that I notice repeatedly since I change band, mode and NB settings often. Nothing out of the ordinary triggers this; one minute it works fine, the next it doesn't. I can sometimes get the rig to behave normally by cycling the power, other times by pressing another button that does work. Other times nothing works, until it just starts acting normally by itself. I've reloaded the latest revision firmware as well as an older revision from 2010 that I had on my PC. I've also reloaded old and current configuration files. Goofiness persists. Could something on the front panel PCB have gone awry on me? I have a KPA500 and a PC connected to the rig, if that is relevant. I've not tried to duplicate the trouble with everything disconnected yet. Any ideas? 73. I could be the steel connector pins on the front panel having some corrosion on them. My early is back in CA for retrofit of gold pins for similar stuff. Re: [Elecraft] Odd K3 Behavior
Paul, Your low serial number K3 most likely does not have gold pins on the front panel to RF board connectors. You can probably fix it by removing and reseating the front panel assembly. Some have reported that a small bit of DeOxit will help, but I cannot personally vouch for that. If that fixes it, know that you can change the connectors to the gold ones, or have Elecraft do that for you - contact support for the part numbers. If you did not assemble that K3, you can find the front panel removal instructions in several of the Elecraft documents - one of which is the K3 Front Panel Modification http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/K3%20Rev%20B%20FP%20Mod%20v1r6.pdf - you do not have to do the mod, just skip to Section B which covers the front panel removal and reassembly. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/17/2014 9:43 AM, Paul Lannuier wrote: My six year old K3 (#217) has been behaving oddly the past few weeks. [Elecraft] K3: XMIT produces Display 0 W suddenly
Earlier this morning I was operating JT65 with no problems. Left the rig alone; worked on other computer; left the house for a while and when I returned, I tried to transmit using JT65; using CW and pressing the front=panel XMIT. In all cases the main Display of the K3 shows 0 W. Checking CONFIG: Tune PWR shows 30. Adjusting the K3 front-panel knob PWR is what I'd expect, variable to whatever I turn it to. The situation is as follows. I use HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) to run my K line (K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500) remotely once in a while. The “Tune” button on the HRD's simulated Radio Face works fine in initiating the tune cycle for the K3 internal ATU. However, when the internal ATU is bypassed, it will not initiate the tune cycle for the KAT500. I am sure what is needed is a code line change in the HRD code sequence for the Tune” button but I have no idea where to look for the appropriate sequence to use. I think I found where to make the change in HRD. Any insight would be appreciated. 73, Bill – W0BBI -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Remote-activation-of-KAT500-via-HRD-tp7582962.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Bob, You say in CW, did you mean to say Data A mode on the K3, which is what you need for JT65. Zero output would be what you get if in CW mode and ptt on, with an audio input type data mode. Wouldn't it be cool if the P3 could display the K3's transmitted signal in the time domain, like an oscilloscope? Re: [Elecraft] K3: XMIT produces Display 0 W suddenly
When My K3 (kit) was about a year old it developed a similar issue. In my paranoia to not damage the TMP connectors, I had not used enough force to press home the TMP located just under the right forward corner (Toward the front panel) of the sub-receiver on the main board. I actually traced the signal to that point! Now I'm a little less paranoid and make sure the TMP connectors are firmly pressed home. 73 George AI4VZ -Original Message- From: Bob KD7YZ Sent: Friday, January 17, 2014 1:44 PM To: K3 List Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3: XMIT produces Display 0 W suddenly I have learned from Elecraft that this may be indicative of two blown FET's in the 10w amp stage inside the K3. gremlins abound. Re: [Elecraft] new K3 owner
Carl, Think anti-static. Use a wrist strap as a minimum, but an anti-static mat in addition is highly desirable. The idea is to keep everything within reach at your work area at the same potential. Do *NOT* use a fully conductive work area (like a cookie sheet) - that can be a hazard to your well-being in case there is a short of some kind - sparks and molten metal spewing into the air and onto your body is possible. The anti-static mat and the wrist strap can connect to the ground screw on the plate of an AC receptacle - but make certain the receptacle is properly grounded, you can check with an inexpensive tester that can be found at your DIY or hardware store in the electrical department. Driving a ground stake is totally unnecessary, and can in itself be a hazard if it is not connected to the utility entrance ground stake with a #6 or larger copper wire. As I indicated, the idea is to keep everything at the same potential (even through a high resistance). The wrist strap will have an internal 1 megohm resistor to assure your safety. 2nd, buy yourself a *new* good quality #1 Phillips screwdriver - do not skimp on quality for that item, stripped or partially stripped screwheads can reward you if you ignore this small item. Some will tell you to use a magnetic screwdriver, but I don't like anything magnetic at my workbench - they pick up bits of metallic things and drop them in places where Murphy says they will cause the most damage. Other than that, follow the instructions in the order written - and do an inventory up front. If you do not understand any step, stop and ask, there will be several on this reflector that will try to clarify for you. Have fun with the build, in the end you will have a great transceiver. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/17/2014 4:11 PM, Carl Yaffey wrote: Hi. I’ve just ordered a K3 kit. Patience and care will reward you with the best, most versatile, most customizable XCVR currently on the market. Day one: I set up a folding table by the stove, sorted (using a couple of egg cartons for small parts), and read the complete directions. Day two: I spent about six or seven hours doing assembly. Take your time - read the directions twice. Day three: Completed assembly and testing - another five or six hours. Be sure to get the Fred Cady book - it will help you understand the real capabilities of the K3 and show you how to use them. Since then, I have used the K3 five or six hours daily - sometimes more. Complicated and complex? Sure is. Take the time to learn the radio. You will be rewarded with a great experience. Get a pitcher and some ice - you will need it for the Kool Aide. It took me nearly a year to fully appreciate the K3 and become an official Kool Aid drinker. Re: [Elecraft] Station Monitor
I don't have anything official on that, but I would believe it is in the plan. It may not provide a time domain display, but a frequency domain display would be more valuable - one can see any spurs rather than trying to judge if the 'sine wave' display has any flattopping distortion - that is difficult to detect except by the most experienced eye. Take a look at the spectrum analysis of a 2-tone test compared to the oscilloscope display and tell me which has the better indication - IMHO, the spectrum display gets top honors. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/17/2014 6:02 PM, kc2vmp wrote: I've been hoping to see the port on the back of the P3 labeled sensor used for something like this. 73, kc2vmp On Jan 17, 2014, at 2:18 PM, Al Lorona alor...@sbcglobal.net wrote: Wouldn't it be cool if the P3 could display the K3's transmitted signal in the time domain, like an oscilloscope? [Elecraft] New new pending K3 owner
Not to be outdone, add another to the list of “OMGz, it’s on the way!” about-to-be K3 owners. After being out of the field for 30 years, good Lord have things changed. I’m already reading my copy of Fred Cady’s book. Even as an electrical engineer, ugh, it’ll take a while to learn. Meanwhile, the tilt-up pole for the inverted-L antenna is mostly done. I’m sure that I’ll be posting more as things move along! In other news, it broke my heart that I missed out on the Begali keys for sale just yesterday! :( Oh well, guess I'll keep looking. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Transmit Bandwidth for 60 Meters
Well, practically, yes ... because no one is watching your bandwidth unless it is really excessive [it probably won't be] and another primary user complains. Technically, a 2.7KHz filter is a bit wider than that. On the other hand, there is no reason to be modulating your radio with audio above about 2.2KHz or so. The guy to ask about that is Jim, K9YC. I set my TX EQ to his recommendations, I get many unsolicited Great audio comments in the few SSB contests I enter, and I'm pretty sure with a 2.7 and those EQ settings, you'd be as legal as you can be on 60m ... or anywhere else 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2014 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 2014 - www.cqp.org On 1/17/2014 9:03 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Dave, 2.7 kHz is less than 2.8 kHz, so you should be fine. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/17/2014 10:28 PM, dave_w0ru wrote: The upper sideband bandwidth on 60 meters is limited by the rules to 2.8 KHz. Re: [Elecraft] OT - LoTW Verifications
I apologize for perpetuating this off topic thread ... But just to clarify, ARRL holds the LOTW certificate for W1AW, so any uploading of their logs must be done by them. The centennial host stations simply cannot submit W1AW/# logs to LOTW. I was one of the operators here in Utah last week. We were asked to send logs to our state coordinator after each shift. He then checked them out and sent them on to ARRL. The folks in Newington then digitally signed and uploaded the logs at a time they felt was appropriate. I suspect that things are being done in a similar way in the other states as well. I think it's unreasonable to expect logs to be uploaded less than a week after any QSO. I'd start checking LOTW for DE and NE confirmations a few days after they have finished and turned things over to the next two states. Sorry for the OT bandwidth ..
