I oubt that I will buy the amplifier. If I want up to 100W I will use my TS2000X, plus having the KX3 set below 5W on CW (10W on SSB) is ideal for my QRP activities. Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] curious behavior of the K3/P3, etc.
Scott, When receiving in lower sideband, the AF highest tones are on the lower side of the passband display on the P3 - lower than the carrier. The audio pitch is the difference between the carrier and the tone. The Hi-cut moves the high end of the resulting audio, and in order for that to happen the lower edge of the passband shown on the P3 must move closer to the carrier. I hope that helps. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/12/2014 2:44 PM, Scott wrote: However, I am still left with some doubts: particularly, why does the upper limit change when I adjust the lo-cut, and the lower limit change when I adjust the hi-cut? Thus, if I want to narrow my bandwidth to avoid a station above the desired one, I must adjust the lo-cut (I can see this happen on the P3). [Elecraft] KAT500 sudden tuning tuning - CURED
I have had a lot of problems with my KAT500 suddenly retuning in the middle of SSB transmissions - well documented on previous posts - making use of the KPA500/KAT500 unpleasant/impossible. Yesterday I installed three beta firmwares - K3 (4.83), KAT500 (1.37), and KPA500 (1.57). The results have been wonderful. In nearly eight hours of SSB operation, I have experienced NO unexpected sudden tunes. What a joy my K-Line operation is now! Thank you Elecraft. Re: [Elecraft] K3 10Mhz IF questions with the latest beta
Eric, Thanks for the tip. I tried going with direct freq. enter and ended up in one of my memory locations above 490-KHz (that I run in TEST mode). I don't normally change band using the Band switch, since I have favorite freq. in memory for all bands I use. Just stepping down in bands with the BAND switch landed me at 0.000.00 KHz and moving VFO-A cw frequency moved up to 472 continuously from 00.000.00. I left it on 472 and the radio will remember when I hit the BAND switch button again. I have a very prototype mixer for 630m so next I should try it out! 1.5mw from the K3 is probably low as drive to the SBL mixer so probably need a buffer (2N will work). vers. 4.81 installed. 73, Ed - KL7UW 600m - 3cm - From: Eric NO3M n...@no3m.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 10Mhz IF questions with the latest beta Message-ID: 52fc55fd.4020...@no3m.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Switch to the transverter band you setup using the BAND up/dwn buttons. The 200 ohm scale gives a reading of 91 ohms 2000 ohms scale reads 1500 20K scale reads 3.7 200k scale reads 10.7 What other symptoms might I look for to check for an issue in the power rail. Re: [Elecraft] Coupling between antennas- rx protection

I recently put up a receiving loop for 160 in a small backyard at about 25 feet from and 25 feet below from an inv vee. I wanted to take a quick look and was surprised that at 10 watts out of the K3 , it would start activating the protective relay for the sub receiver. Personally I would NEVER rely on the relay to protect the sub rx long term . As far as I am concerned it is just there to tell you you should do something different NOW. . I have a VNA2180 anatyzer and can measure the coupling and find the coupling between the loop , and the inverted vee is only down 27 dB worst case coupling . 27 dB down is a power ratio of 500 so 10 watts was putting about 20 milliwatts on the sub rx input. For a frame of reference (5mw is S9 +80dB or 500millivolts , +7 dBm so 20 mw is S9+86 dB - or 1 volt , +13 dBm .) In addition to the inv vee at 39 feet I have a KT34 at 42 feet , a rotary dipole at 50 feet at right angles to the KT34 , a 30 m and 12m dipoles hanging from the tower. There are MANY combinations in that mess that are only down about 30 dB in worst case orientations and frequencies. Since you may not have an analyzer or a freind who could make the measurement for you , I thought of one thing you might be able to do. If you have an external QRP wattmeter , just feed a known power into one antenna and put the SWR bridge on the coupled antenna - with the coax to the normal input and put a 50 ohm dummy load - or even just a 50 ohm resistor on the output of the bridge and you can read the coupled power. As someone else suggested , an external protective device uisng a DPDT relay (like Kestler KS2E-M-DC12 which has 2 amp contacts and better yet gold flashed contacts for dry circuits) only $1.75 at All Electronics and a GP PNP and couple resistors , couple bypass caps , a reverse diode across the relay coil and a box should cost less than $5 for a lot of security - driven directly off the KEY OUT from the K3.) I like the DPDT because it allows you to both short the rx input and open the line to the antenna . That gave well over 100 dB of isolation at 160 thru 40 - I was not interested above that so did not look at it but I would expect 80 - 90 dB easliy at 30. There are also rx proetctive device using diodes which do not involve relays - Array Solutions AS-RXPEP is one that is clever , using step up and step down transformers with the diodes between - theyclaim it will handle 10 watts ICAS on inoput and lints output to o dBm pr about 223 mv. I am sure ther are many other designs around, I personally do not want to worry about diodes hnaging across a rx input . 73 Hank K7HP __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2 Won't power on
Jeremy, I would tend to believe the reading on the 2000 ohm scale. Look at the display in the 200 ohm scale and see if it shows a + to the left - If so, that indicates overrange and you should switch to a higher range. I would also believe that the 20k and 200k scales are showing you resistance in kilo ohms. The voltage used for resistance measurements may change as you switch scales. In other words, it sounds like no short on the 12v power rail, but do check the instructions for your meter so you know what the display is telling you. Inexpensive meters are normally fairly accurate for voltage readings, but not necessarily for resistance. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/13/2014 1:55 PM, JeremyJones wrote: Yes it is a digital multimeter, but I only paid about $10 for it. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna question
Well, I was speaking of my situation. I'm in the Sonoran Desert of southern AZ with ground that varies from granite to sand to caliche within a few feet distance. Although many (most?) hams consider vertical antennas to be low-angle radiators, they often fail to consider the efficiency of that low-angle radiator. My modeling shows that even a low lambda dipole with its high-angle radiation often has more signal radiated at the vertical's optimum (low) angle than the vertical does. Plotting the two antennas and overlaying the plots will easily show this. Now I'm not going to argue with the guys with heroic vertical phased array installations and the like, but for the typical guy contemplating a modest vertical installation v. a straightforward dipole or inverted-vee I would (and did) choose the dipole. Besides, I think that low angle is often overrated. Although I'm normally loath to state anecdotal evidence, my paralleled wires 40 and 80-meter inverted-vee with apex at 40 ft and ends at 20 feet models as a NVIS antenna, but I have 148 DXCC countries (including antipodal FT5ZM) worked on 80-meters and I don't much care for 80-meters so seldom operate there. [Elecraft] New K3/KPA500/KAT500 beta firmware: KAT500 tracking of K3 VFO other improvements
The K3, KPA500, and KAT500 all have new beta firmware releases available. All three must be updated to take advantage of these major improvements to the KAT500 and KPA500. All known problems with unwanted re-tuning and faults have been fixed. We've also added a new feature that allows the KAT500's network settings to automatically track the K3's VFO frequency. The K3 will send frequency information over the K3's AUXBUS line, and the KAT500 will select previously memorized tuner settings as you move across the band, or when you “point and shoot” to work a packet spot. If you have any difficulty with the instructions below, please post a question to the Elecraft list, or contact customer support. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * Instructions 1. Download the new beta firmware for each device from the applicable software pages on our web site. NOTE: Follow the instructions for beta firmware releases when installing software in subsequent steps. 2. Using K3 Utility, save your K3's configuration. Then install K3 rev. 4.83. 3. Using KPA Utility, save your KPA500's configuration. Then install KPA500 rev. 1.37. 4. Using KAT500 Utility, save the KAT500's configuration. Then install KAT500 rev. 1.58. 5. (OPTIONAL) Set up the K3 to send VFO information to the KAT500: (a) Make sure the K3 and KAT500 (and KPA500, if applicable) are connected via the accessory cable. The AUXBUS line must be connected, as well as the four BAND lines, which we use to “qualify” the AUXBUS frequency data. If you've built your own cable and omitted the AUXBUS or BAND lines, you may need more wires for this to work. (b) At the K3, locate the CONFIG:KAT3 menu entry. Tap the numeric keypad '1' button (also labeled A/B). You should see “KAT500Y” or “KAT500N” with successive taps. Leave it on KAT500Y (the Y means Yes, send VFO info to the KAT500). Exit the menu. (c) Verify that as you tune the K3's VFO, the KAT500 selects the appropriate LC settings. This occurs after you *stop* moving the K3's VFO for about 1/2 second. You should hear one or more relays clicking at the KAT500 when entering segments that have different LC settings. 6. (OPTIONAL) In conjunction with the new VFO tracking feature, you may find it a good idea to “retrain” your ATU on 8 or 10 kHz boundaries on 160 meters, and every 20 kHz on 80 meters, particularly if the antennas have sharp SWR curves. (a) Use the KAT500 Utility, Configuration tab, Edit Configuration, Erase Memories to erase memories on bands that have sharp SWR curves (e.g. 160 and 80 m). (b) While you're in the Edit Configuration dialog, make sure the Amplifier Key Interrupt power setting is 1500 for a KPA500. If not, click Optimize for KPA500, then Apply. (c) Change the tuner's mode to MAN. In mode AUTO, the KAT500 will start a full search tune whenever the SWR reaches a threshold. If you're pretuned, that should be unnecessary and is probably undesirable. Mode AUTO is useful for remote tuners where it is inconvenient to press the ATU TUNE button when you need to. (d) Using exciter power only, perform a full search tune at 10 kHz increments on 160 and 20 kHz increments on 80 meters. Do this for frequencies where you don't want the ATU to enter full search tune when you next QSY there. This is best done by setting the K3's TUN POWER to about 20 watts, HOLD the K3 TUNE button to generate carrier, then tap the KAT500 TUNE button. It may take a while for a few settings, but often it will start close and won't take long at all. It depends on the SWR curve of the antenna on that band. (e) IMPORTANT: When you first visit a new frequency, the ATU will first snap in a setting from a nearby memory. It may be a memory you've used before with a different antenna. If the setting is inappropriate for the current antenna, the SWR will be high, and in mode AUTO, the tuner will need to retune, which requires more or less constant carrier, not SSB speech, not high speed CW. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB problem
Troy, I'd first check the MIC SELection (front or rear or line in) to be sure it is correct for your setup, then MIC BIAS to be sure it is on or off as required by your microphone. Then set the MIC GAIN for 4-5 bars of ALC. If you are getting this but no transmit power, contact support. If you are not getting 4-5 bars of ALC and the selection and bias are correct, check your microphone and/or try the other mic jack (front or rear as appropriate). A common computer headeset can usually be used with the rear panel mic jack, and normally will require bias to be on. 73, Lyle My K3 wont transmit on SSB. I have a vertical for 80 and 40 with elevated radials (full size except for the loading of the 40 meter trap) - in A/B tests compared with my 80 and 40 meter dipoles with the center at 45 feet and ends at 20 feet or greater, I have found that copy on *all* stations is better using the dipoles than with the vertical. Re: [Elecraft] XV-144 Overdrive protection
Andrew, Some transverters suffer from false overload detection due to noise on the DC circuit to the microprocessor. The cure I have found effective is to remove the front panel metalwork and solder a 0.1 uF capacitor between the collector and emitter of Q7. Don, Thanks for the reply. I have the capacitors on the reg and the electrolytic cap on pin 1 and 2. I am using a separate supply on the XV-144 compared to the KX3, will try using the 1 supply. Re: [Elecraft] CMP ALC on display
Tony, It is possible that something has gotten mixed up in your firmware. Hopefully you have saved your KX3 configuration - if you have, you can try an EEINIT (parameter initialization). See page 44 in the manual. If you have not saved a configuration (using KX3 Utility), you can still try it by saving the configuration first. The danger in saving the configuration just before EEINIT is that the error you have could just be brought back when you do the configuration restore. If you do not have a saved configuration, you may be able to obtain the factory configuration data file from Elecraft. Contact supp...@elecraft.com to obtain that file. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/13/2014 6:33 PM, Antonio Matias wrote: Hi Jim sorry to trouble but no fix the problem yet all the same. the CMP wont get out of there, and i like to see the SWR/RF reading Some how it might need modified another item on menu or so. Re: [Elecraft] CMP ALC on display
You may have SSB+CW turned on. From the release notes: * CW-IN-SSB TRANSMIT ADDED: This feature allows you to send CW while in SSB mode, which can be useful when your SSB signal cannot be copied due to poor conditions. The other station will hear a tone at your CW pitch. To enable CW-in-SSB: Locate the CW WGHT menu entry, then tap ‘1’ (PRE) to alternate between “SSW +CW” (enabled) and “SSB –CW” (disabled). The default is disabled. Important Notes: (1) CW-in-SSB does not yet apply in SPLIT mode. (2) When CW-in-SSB is enabled, tapping the KEYER/MIC knob toggles between keyer speed and mic gain rather than between the two transmit metering scales (CMP/ALC and SWR/RF). The CMP/ALC scale is still shown temporarily whenever CMP or mic gain are adjusted. There was a bug in an earlier version of firmware that may have left the CMP/ALC meter scale showing. Do you have the latest (rev. 1.87)? Try turning CW-in-SSB off as explained above. [Elecraft] P3 tracking K3 VFO A?
Is there a way to have the marker track VFO A? Along the same path, is there a way to have the marker stay on VFO A and scroll as I adjust the K3? It would be helpful to have see what is going on in the spectrum with the P3 panadapter and move the VFO rather than only be able to use the knob to move the marker to go to a particular signal on the waterfall, and then push the knob on the P3 to move the K3s VFO to that frequency. [Elecraft] KX3
Everyone. Some time ago I tried using NAP3 with an external USB stereo input sound module on my battery operated laptop with my battery operated KX3. Nothing was referenced to any power line source. The software worked fine. Hooking up the battery charger to the laptop or running the KX3 off the main power supply resulted in a buzz from the KX3 speaker and NAP3 not working. Disconnecting the I/Q cable killed the buzz. I had the same problem using my desktop computer. I purchased some 600 Ohm isolation transformers and connected them between the sound module of the computer to the I/Q output of the KX3. The problem went away and NAP3 worked perfectly. I just got my new KXPA100 linear and control cable. When testing the linear I had been running NAP3 and I noticed that when I powered off the KX3 and the KPA100 linear then powered the KX3 back up the linear went in to a firmware loading mode and was unresponsive to any K3 commands. The problem seem to be having NAP3 running and linked to the KX3 through the RS232 port. With NAP3 running and it's poling the KX3 from the computer caused interference between the KX3 issuing commands to the KXPA100 during power up. Shutting down NAP3 then powering up the KX3 resulted in everything starting up fine and full control to the linear from the KX3. After everything is started you can run NAP3 with no problems, just be sure the software is off before starting the KX3. I have not used any other pan adapter software but if it needs input from the KX3 it may cause problems when left running and trying to start the KX3 with the KXPA100 linear. The KXP100 Linear is working fine. I have used it with my SB220 and had no problems. Re: [Elecraft] [k3] OT - Antenna for apartment use
Hi Dave, Good luck with it. Two comments only: (1) Indoor antennas work well enough IF the house is wood frame without any chicken-wire-supported stucco facing. Also, if you have concrete walls, the rebar kills you. Either chicken wire or rebar makes a Faraday cage, keeping radiation from entering and exiting. (2) Whips beat loops. 73, Oliver W6ODJ On 13 Jan. 2014, at 16:49 PM, David Guernsey mooo1...@yahoo.com wrote: I have a K3/10 SN 4052 that I would like to use in an apartment/condo with no outdoor access. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna question
I'm not by any means an antenna expert. All I can say is with ft5zm, they were much stronger on the vertical than my dipole on 20 meters. Some how some way, I was able to work them on 40 cw with the hustler vertical. The conclusion I've come to is there's times where my dipole works better for DX and there's times the vertical works better. Guess that's why I still have them both up. But that's what makes Amateur Radio so fun, seeing what works and what doesn't, and how one might be great one day, but not so good the next. I love radio... Re: [Elecraft] [k3] OT - Antenna for apartment use
It's a 4-1/2 foot whip, working against the coax shield as a 'radial'. Probably the coax will radiate more than the whip, especially if the coax is stretched out full length. An indoor dipole would certainly work better. A couple of pieces of wire matched by the K3 tuner would work as well or better. There is also the likelihood of RF on the coax affecting the transmitter, or arcing to the operator if the circumstances are right! Don't waste your money. [Elecraft] How to be really confused by your K3
I rarely operate SSB -- mostly CW here. But, I was working at my desk and listening and just happened to be on 14.26 MHz when I heard a CQ. I scooted over and picked up the Mic (the stock Elecraft MH2) and answered. He couldn't quite hear me. I turned on the KPA500 and went again. He heard me a bit better but said that the audio did not sound right. We had our QSO anyway. Then, I heard the W1AW/9 SSB station and decided to pick him up on SSB, I already had a CW contact. Even though there was a good signal path he was not hearing me clearly even though I know he heard me. I decided to put the headphones on and focus a bit better. On my next try he picked me up right away. Something was wrong with the mic -- maybe gain setting or something so I decided to do the ALC setup on my mic. As much as I tried, I could hardly get any bars on the ALC. The Mic (gain) setting was up to 49 and maybe 2 bars at best and talking pretty loud into the MH2. I am thinking -- what is going on here. I checked to make sure the BIAS setting was correct for the mic, maybe I changed something. I switched into the menu setting and noticed that I was on the rear panel mic, not front panel where the MH2 is connected. My Yamaha headset was on the rear panel. All this time, while speaking loudly into the MH2, it was the Yamaha mic that was picking me up and thru the entire first QSO that was sitting aside on the desk. OK, I got things back to normal now but I was getting worried that my K3 or MH2 or something was screwed up. Good to learn it was only me. Its a good thing that I am mostly CW -- so much easier than SSB. How do you SSB guys do it so easily? 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You will probably need a tuner. I earned DXCC with an apartment antenna. Piece of cake. At ten watts you will probably not get to meet your neighbors. Re: [Elecraft] Percentage of KX3 owners who bought a KXPA100
Thanks for all of the excellent points on my not-so-scientific survey. Penn makes an especially good point about the KX3 being a viable alternative to use with any QRP transceiver. Both Elecraft and Ten-Tec used this as a selling point for their respective offerings. Looks like several of you are waiting, either until any bugs are worked out, or until it's available from stock. Right now, it's still looking like 1-2 weeks, according to the latest shipping status from Elecraft. 73 de Jim - AD6CW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [k3] OT - Antenna for apartment use
Well then, Dave -- you're problems may be less than you expect. I've lived in apartments where I could put up substantial wire antennas outdoors; also in one where I used a stealth outdoor antenna of #22 magnet wire laid over a roof under cover of night and did well with it most times (rain on the roof was an issue!). In many cases you'll need an external tuner capable of dealing with a random wire. 73, Phil w7ox On 2/13/14, 6:31 PM, David Guernsey wrote: Should also note that the K3/10 has an automatic tuner installed. Re: [Elecraft] P3 USB Keyboard
A BIOS-based keyboard doesn't take any special device driver, and it is recognized by the BIOS at the time a PC boots up (rather than later, after its device driver is loaded by the operating system). The P3 requires this type of keyboard because it isn't designed to support non-mainstream I/O devices via drivers - which it can't load or use. There are VERY few non-BIOS keyboards out there. For some reason, people keep returning them or using them for target practice. Maybe this has something to do with the fact that this type of keyboard cannot be used to configure the BIOS itself, at boot time. Paul's recommendation of the Logitch K360 wireless keyboard is well put. That is what I use here. 73, matt W6NIA On Thu, 13 Feb 2014 20:16:24 -0700, you wrote: I have a USB keyboard that I use with my WIN XP laptop that works just fine with the laptop but my P3 doesn't recognize the keyboard.
